Systematicky ide o kôrovce podtriedy Phyllopoda, Ostracoda, Copepoda a o kmeň Rotifera. Rad perloočiek patrí do podtriedy Phyllopoda – lupeňonôžky. triedy kôrovcov Crustacea. Niektoré z nich: Daphnia pulex, D. magna, D. cucullata, D. psittacea, D. pulex, D. longispina, Bosmina longirostris, Scapholeberis mucronata, Camptocercus rectirostris, Leptodora kindti, Ceriodaphnia, Chydorus sphaericus, Euricercus lamellatus, Sida cristallina, Rynchotalona, Simocephalus vetulus, Moina rectirostris, M. macropa.

Cyklop patrí do podradu Cyclopoidea, radu Podoplea, podtriedy Copepoda – veslonôžky, triedy Crustacea, kmeňa Arthtopoda – článkonožce. Ide napr. o Cyclops albidus, C. strenuus, Canthocamptus staphylinus, Diaptomus coeruleus, D. graciloides.

Odporúčam neliať do akvária vodu z lokality, odkiaľ sme si potravu zadovážili. Potom nám už nič nebráni v tom, aby sme naše ryby nakŕmili, snáď len to, aby sme nenaliali priveľa vody do nádrže, treba na to myslieť dopredu a radšej odliať vodu z nádrže ešte pred kŕmením. Multimedikal do takéhoto vedra.

Systematically, it concerns the arthropods of the suborders Phyllopoda, Ostracoda, Copepoda, and the class Rotifera. These tiny creatures live in stagnant water, and ideal conditions for them are provided by organic pollution. Aquarium enthusiasts commonly refer to everything smaller than a copepod as dust.” Aquarium enthusiasts usually do not distinguish them, so the term dust” quickly caught on – they are suitable, for example, for newly hatched angelfish or fry. The order of seed shrimps belongs to the suborder Phyllopoda – branchiopods of the class Crustacea. Some of them include: Daphnia pulex, D. magna, D. cucullata, D. psittacea, D. longispina, Bosmina longirostris, Scapholeberis mucronata, Camptocercus rectirostris, Leptodora kindti, Ceriodaphnia, Chydorus sphaericus, Euricercus lamellatus, Sida cristallina, Rynchotalona, Simocephalus vetulus, Moina rectirostris, M. macropa. Daphnia range in size from 0.2 to 5 mm. The genus Daphnia includes about 150 species, divided into three subgenera: Daphnia, Hyalodaphnia, and Ctenodaphnia. Their lifespan in nature strongly depends on temperature. In cold water, they can live three times longer than in warm water. They are also suitable for toxicological studies of the ecosystem. Some species are endangered according to the IUCN: Daphnia nivalis, D. coronata, D. occcidentalis, D. jollyi.

Moina is a small daphnia, reaching up to 2.5 mm, and is found in calm waters, often of poor quality, highly polluted, and low in oxygen. Seed shrimps reproduce through parthenogenesis (without fertilization). It is a typical example where all individuals are females during favorable periods. Only in less favorable conditions, males suddenly appear, mating in a sexual reproduction process, ensuring the transfer of genetic information. In spring, females hatch from the eggs laid in the fall. They can be caught similarly to cyclops and copepods, using a sieve made of miller’s silk or possibly a coarser sieve, such as from cheesecloth or muslin. Daphnia are larger than cyclops but are not energetically valuable because a significant part of their body is water and a solid cuticle, forming their skeleton. Moina achieves the highest yield in potential artificial cultivation. For fish, it is a more energy-rich diet than ordinary” daphnia and can be compared to cyclops. Daphnia reach their highest abundance in summer.

Cyclops belong to the suborder Cyclopoidea, order Podoplea, suborder Copepoda – copepods, class Crustacea, phylum Arthopoda – arthropods. Examples include Cyclops albidus, C. strenuus, Canthocamptus staphylinus, Diaptomus coeruleus, D. graciloides. Cyclops are very suitable fish food, relatively nutritious, and can be qualitatively protein-rich. Under certain conditions, they can also be bred. Their population curves fluctuate widely, and it’s not uncommon to catch a huge number of cyclops one day and almost none the next day. Generally, their population peaks in spring and autumn. Cyclops are relatively predatory, so it is necessary to be careful when feeding smaller fry to avoid depletion or harm to the fish population.

Cyclops, copepods, and dust can survive in larger quantities in a bucket with aeration for up to a week. Ideally, it is best to feed the collected food immediately. If that is not possible and you don’t want to freeze the remainder, partial preservation is possible with strong aeration. Everything depends on the quantity. Plankton can also be stored outdoors, in the cellar, or on the balcony where direct sunlight does not reach – similar to daphnia, with the difference that daphnia are more sensitive to oxygen depletion.

Rotifers constitute a separate class Rotifera. They are very suitable for fish fry. They are named after their typical movement – swirling, which is constantly evident. Rotifers can be captured using nets made of miller’s silk or monofilament. Some rotifers include Philodina, Synchaeta, Lepadella, Pterodina, Copeus, Euchlanis dilatata, Dinocharis, Keratella quadrata, Keratella cochlearis, Filina, Cephalodella, Brachionus, Pedalion, predatory Asplanchna (Petr Novák). They reproduce by eggs, sometimes even parthenogenetically. They live for 84108 hours, become sexually mature within 12 to 36 hours, and the female lays eggs every 4 hours. The life cycle depends on temperature, with higher temperatures resulting in a faster cycle. Rotifers’ advantage is that they move relatively calmly in the tank, which is advantageous for less agile fish fry. The digestive cycle of rotifers is only 1020 minutes. Brachionus plicatilis is offered as a starter, which requires salty water, or freshwater Brachionus calyciflorus. They reach 2550% of the size of freshly hatched artemia (Petr Novák).

Flea Collection:

To catch fleas, a sieve made of women’s stockings, cheesecloth, miller’s silk, or ideally monofilament is needed. However, dust can pass through stockings, cheesecloth, and miller’s silk. The sieve is good when it is on a long stick, even one longer than three meters. Aquarium companies sell collapsible sieves for catching such food, although, of course, a similar tool can be homemade for this purpose. Miller’s silk is challenging to find; monofilament is sold in fabric stores. Its price is low, and occasionally, even photographers buy monofilament, and it can serve as a diffuser. The sieve catches food in the water best when making figure-eights. Besides fleas – crustaceans, copepods, and sometimes a small number of water fleas can be caught. Remember that if you are catching in a fishing area, you need a permit from the fishing union to catch plankton. Caught food can be sorted using various screens with different-sized mesh. This way, food caught together for different-sized fish can be selectively separated, from adults to fry.

Daphnia are relatively sensitive during oxygen transfer. Therefore, it is better to transport them in so-called frames, or with as little water as possible. They can last longer in a larger bucket, with a lower concentration of daphnia and assuming that nothing decomposes in the bucket. In colder seasons, it is quite easy. In summer, shorter periods of aeration during the day can be provided for daphnia, and at night, if it is not 30°C outside, they can be placed on the balcony.

Instructions for Flea Farming:

This type of food occurs from the melting of the ice until late autumn. The population density of cyclops and rotifers is highest early in spring and autumn. In contrast, daphnia peak during the summer. It can be said that they are biological filters. They feed on algae, protozoa, bacteria. They can also eliminate cloudiness in the aquarium, provided they do not become part of the fish food chain or part of a strongly suctioned filter. This ability is actually a prerequisite for their artificial breeding. Fleas can also be bred independently. Ideally, large pits are suitable, into which organic waste is poured, e.g., feces, kefir, whey, water is added, and cyclops will undoubtedly appear. Organic material needs to be replenished over time. It can be, for example: feces, decomposing remnants, blood, kefir, spoiled milk, whey, horse dung. Such a substrate, which decomposes, forms a nutrient base for bacteria, protozoa, which decompose this waste.” These decomposers are food for daphnia, cyclops, rotifers, and small crustaceans. For proper breeding, it is advisable to promote decomposition using yeast. There are known cases where a breeder utilized part of a canal similarly. Quantity-wise, it is ideal to have small daphnia – moina in a similar device.” It will provide four times higher yield compared to regular daphnia. Pure cyclops are also an excellent source of live food. It is a common practice for breeders who keep daphnia near suckers. It is enough to occasionally throw, for example, lettuce, cabbage, etc., into the aquarium. Both suckers and daphnia get enough, as similar material decomposes quickly in the water. In this way, breeders ensure a constant supply of daphnia, of course, not intensive culture, but for variety or a rare source of live food, often the only one in the breeding that doesn’t take up any extra space. The condition, of course, is that no other fish than suckers are present in such an aquarium – sucker fish do not eat live daphnia. If you place a bottle of water in the sun on the window, wait until it turns green, and add cyclops and a few drops of milk every two weeks, it is possible to maintain cyclops in it. Of course, not in large quantities. After a short time, you can move the bottle out of direct sunlight.

Feeding Fleas:

I recommend not pouring water from the location where we obtained the food into the aquarium unless we caught it densely” – without water, for example, in frames. Ideally, pour fleas through a sieve and transfer the sieve’s contents into clean water. If there is any dirt left in our live food, wait until it settles on the bottom and collect fleas without it. You can also use a tube to help. Afterward, nothing prevents us from feeding our fish; perhaps only to avoid pouring too much water into the tank, think about it beforehand, and it’s better to drain the water from the tank before feeding. Those who are afraid or do not know the location can drop, for example, Multimedica into such a bucket. I am a supporter of the idea that live food cannot endanger healthy fish unless it is explicitly infected; on the contrary, it strengthens them.

Einige Rotiferen sind Philodina, Synchaeta, Lepadella, Pterodina, Copeus, Euchlanis dilatata, Dinocharis, Keratella quadrata, Keratella cochlearis, Filina, Cephalodella, Brachionus, Pedalion, räuberisches Asplanchna (Petr Novák).
