Niektoré nálevníky: trepka – Paramecium caudatum, vhodnú pre poter, Paramecium bursaria, Prorodon teres, Loxodes rostrum, Chilodonella cucullulus, Dileptus anser, Bursaria truncatella, Lacrymaria olor, Spirostomum ambiguum, Stylonychia mytilus, Coleps hirtus, Euplotes charon, Halteria grandinella, Colpidium colpoda, Ichthyophthirius multifilis – zapríčiňujúci známu krupičku, Vorticella, Epistylis, Stentor roeseli, Stentor coeruleus, atď.
Nanajvýš odstátou vodou a pridáme kúsok povrchového bahna. Chov sa nám čoskoro vyčerpá – ide o veľmi uzavretý systém, takže každý mesiac by sme mali chov preočkovať do novej nádoby. Stačí nám tretina starej kultúry, pridáme vodovodnú vodu (ideálne odstátu) a slamu.
Keď chcem rozšíriť kultúru nálevníka, nalejem do novej fľaše do polovice objemu odstátu vodu a prilejem k nej vodu s dobre rozvinutým nálevníkom.
Nálevníky zlejem do takejto fľaše, zvrchu utesnímfiltračnouhmotou a dolejem čerstvú vodu.
Ciliophora is a large group of single-celled organisms – protozoa, which are commonly found in streams, rivers, and groundwater. They are not considered very suitable or nutritious food, but sometimes it is necessary. There are species that are harmful to fish, so it is better to breed Ciliophora from obtained culture or cultivate them. Some Ciliophora: Paramecium caudatum, suitable for fry, Paramecium bursaria, Prorodon teres, Loxodes rostrum, Chilodonella cucullulus, Dileptus anser, Bursaria truncatella, Lacrymaria olor, Spirostomum ambiguum, Stylonychia mytilus, Coleps hirtus, Euplotes charon, Halteria grandinella, Colpidium colpoda, Ichthyophthirius multifilis – causing known ich, Vorticella, Epistylis, Stentor roeseli, Stentor coeruleus, etc.
Alternative breeding
The breeding of Ciliophoradescribed in the following sentences in this paragraph is possible, but I do not recommend it. If we decide to breed Ciliophora on our own, forget about the hay nálev you learned about in school. With hay nálev, you will prepare Ciliophora, but it is not the right procedure. For this, it is necessary to replace the straw with hay. So we take straw, which we ensure remains submerged, pour water over it, preferably from some stagnant water. At most, with standing water, and add a piece of surface mud. We ensure room temperature, sufficient light, but not direct sunlight. Since straw begins to decompose over time, there is a massive proliferation of bacteria. Oxygen concentration rapidly decreases – Ciliophora will die, except for the Paramecium, which lives just below the surface. Within 2 – 3 weeks, we can observe a milky cloudy top layer where Paramecium is located. The breeding will soon exhaust itself – it is a very closed system, so every month we should re-inoculate the culture into a new container. We only need a third of the old culture, add tap water (ideally stagnant), and straw. It is possible to maintain the culture with milk, which promotes massive bacterial growth. It is enough to add one or two drops to the culture every other day. Instead of straw, beetroot can also be used, where, in addition to Paramecium, harmless Colpidium develops. Alternatively, banana peel can be used. Lettuce and hay promote mold growth, and often parasites of Ciliophora also parasitize on fish.
Guide to breeding a pure culture of Ciliophora
I breed Ciliophora in PET bottles, ideally those that are as transparent and colorless as possible. For practical reasons – it is best to see into them. Ideally, there is soft water available and of course an existing Ciliophora culture, which we put into the water and add a raw egg yolk as food for the Ciliophora. If we do not have soft water, we use at least standing water, for at least two days, preferably up to four, to eliminate all gases from it. Breeding Ciliophora is more difficult than keeping delicate fish alive. When I want to expand the Ciliophora culture, I pour half of the volume of standing water into a new bottle and add water with well-developed Ciliophora to it. Of course, Ciliophora needs to be fed – for which raw yolk serves us best. After adding the feed, it usually takes two days for the bacteria to start decomposing the material extensively, and then the Ciliophora has a suitable environment for its development. It is advisable to breed Ciliophora in several bottles, because especially with abundant feeding, we always remove a large part of the Ciliophora from the culture, and it often happens that it disappears from some bottle. It is important that no algae form in the bottle, so we keep the culture without access to light. The reason is simple, with a darkened bottle, we will not see if there is any Ciliophora in it. If, however, the bottle still becomes cloudy, SAVO helps, which we dilute in water and pour into the bottle. Of course, without Ciliophora. After such cleaning, it is enough to wash the bottle well, or let it air out for a few hours to remove chlorine, and then we can set up the Ciliophora again. If Ciliophora does not want to develop in some bottle, we help ourselves by pouring out part of the contents and pouring from the bottle where the Ciliophora is “nice”. Bottles with Ciliophora should have a pierced cap to provide air to it.
Ciliophora is very small, so some people do not see it. I have experienced that people who wear prescription glasses and look at the culture without them, see nothing living in the bottle, they see only “dirt”. Even sharp eyes are helped by a magnifying glass, in any case, it is good, especially for inexperienced eyes, to focus and set up the Ciliophora so that artificial light shines behind the bottle, it is dark in front of it, and we set up the bottle against something dark, for example against the night sky. An ideal culture has a minimum of food at the bottom, and the Ciliophora is distributed throughout the volume and swims merrily :-).
Feeding Ciliophora is not without problems. I feed Ciliophora in a similar way to vinegar micrae. Wine bottles are ideal for Ciliophora, which have a narrowed neck, which then expands. I pour Ciliophora into such a bottle, seal it from above with filter material, and pour in fresh water. Usually, by the second day, most of these small animals are filtered into clean water. I then extract them with a pipette or simply pour them and feed them to fish. The substrate that was under the seal is then poured back into the PET bottle with the culture. I occasionally replace dirty PET bottles.
Vlastne ide o to, aby celý obsah cirkuloval čo najviac, aby žiadne vajíčka nezostali stáť.
Keď chceme žiabronôžku skŕmiť stojíme pred otázkou, ako ich dostať do akvária bez toho, aby sme ich tam preniesli bez soli. Keďže ide o veľmi malé potvorky, pomohol by napr. mlynársky hodváb, ak ho nemáte, vystačíte si aj s bavlnenou látkou. Ja cedím artémiu cez monofil. Dekapsulovanú – odslupkovanú artémiu používam úspešne ako suché krmivo.
Artemia salina – saltwater brine shrimp belongs to Entomostraca. Brine shrimp, predominantly used in aquaristics, live in the sea. They are relatively small, up to 15 mm [1], much smaller than their freshwater relatives. You can get freshwater brine shrimp first through frozen cubes in stores. Artemia is used in various sizes, from fine to coarse. Most aquarists prefer fine Artemia. You can get them in pet stores, at fairs, and other aquarium events. Brine shrimp are sold from various locations – Russia, Canada, USA, China. Their hatchability is a matter of quality. 95% hatchability of eggs is an excellent parameter. The price also depends on it. Brine shrimp is a nutritious feed from which fry grow fastest, especially in height and width. When fish are growing, I do not recommend feeding only brine shrimp.
Artemia can be easily hatched, but it depends on the method of each batch ;-). Unfortunately, the requirements for individual “types” and packaging of Artemia vary. I have often witnessed dissatisfaction with the hatchability among my acquaintances, while their friends often have “the same” Artemia working great. Bought Artemia are actually Artemia eggs. We pour the eggs into water, for example, into a bottle, to which we add 3 – 4 teaspoons of salt (25 – 30 g per liter) for 1.5 liters of water, simulating seawater. It is necessary to aerate strongly. Basically, the whole content should circulate as much as possible so that no eggs remain standing. We maintain room temperature or slightly higher. They hatch faster at higher temperatures. After about 24 hours, a large part is already hatched. I myself, like most aquarists I know, let Artemia hatch for 2 days – it’s a bit larger then. Artemia hatches in 1.5 days at 25°C. Among aquarists, it is rumored that brine shrimp can be one-day-old or two-day-old, depending on the hatching time and, of course, the “type.” They only last a short time in freshwater – about 8 hours.
For higher energy value and consequently easier and more effective arrival of small Artemia into the world, decapsulation is used. It removes the protective coating of the brine shrimp egg. When we want to feed brine shrimp, we face the question of how to get them into the aquarium without transferring them there without salt. Since they are very small creatures, miller’s silk would help, if you don’t have it, you can use cotton fabric. I strain Artemia through monofilament. I use decapsulated Artemia successfully as dry feed.
Z druhej fľaše odrežeme spodnú časť do výšky asi 10 cm. Do oboch dier prevlečieme hadičky.
Do fľaše nalejeme 1 l vlažnej vody (ja som si urobil na fľaši rysku, aby som nemusel stále odmeriavať vodu) a nasypeme kopcovitú čajovú lyžičku kuchynskej soli.

The small crustacean, Artemia salina, is a favorite live (as well as frozen) food for many species of aquarium fish. Many breeders of African cichlids use freshly hatched Artemia nauplii to feed young fish after they have dispersed or left the mother’s mouth. Since only Artemia eggs are available, it is necessary to provide suitable conditions for as many nauplii as possible to hatch. For this purpose, so-called Artemia hatcheries are used. There are many different designs, from which I have tried to select the best features – high hatching rate, low maintenance, and cost. For the production of the hatchery itself, I used a classic 1.5 liter PET bottle. I used 2 identical bottles. Of course, any size bottle can be used. However, I recommend looking for a bottle with the upper third towards the neck somehow serrated, not smooth. This is important when retrieving hatched Artemia from the bottle, as when pulling empty egg shells or un-hatched eggs, they catch on the serrations of the bottle wall and do not mix with the hatched nauplii. Cut the bottom off one bottle right at the bottom. This bottle will serve as the actual hatchery.
Cut the bottom part of the second bottle to a height of about 10 cm. This part will serve as the base into which the hatchery will be inserted upside down. Cut off the top third of the bottle with the neck from this second bottle to create a funnel. This part will serve as a cover for the hatchery to prevent splashing of the saltwater. The individual parts are shown in the picture below. Drill two holes in the funnel, the diameter of which is adapted to a classic plastic hose used, for example, for air distribution in aquariums. Drill the holes slightly smaller so that the hoses only just fit through them. Then, thread the hoses through both holes. One will serve for air supply. It is possible to leave the hose without any termination, but in my experience, it is better to use the smallest air stone possible. I used one as used in ordinary foam filters powered by air. The advantage of using an air stone is that it prevents eggs and Artemia from entering this hose when the aeration is turned off (when siphoning off hatched Artemia). Place the stone close to the funnel.
Thread the same hose through the second hole, the end of which will be close to the funnel. This hose will be used to siphon off hatched Artemia nauplii. The bottle with the funnel is ready for attachment to the bottle. Screw the neck of the funnel onto it. Take the cut-off bottom of the bottle and make two holes close to the bottom so that the hoses secured in the funnel can comfortably pass through them. Turn the bottle upside down and place it into the cut-off bottom of the bottle, which serves as the base of the hatchery. Also, thread the hoses through the holes in this part from the inside out. Small valves can be attached to the hoses. However, I chose to close the hoses with an ordinary laundry clip. Connect one hose, on which there is an air stone, to the air compressor.
Close the second hose with a valve or, as I did, fold it over and secure it with a laundry clip. The hatchery is now ready for pouring the solution and hatching. To prevent water from leaking through the hoses, simply catch them with a wire hook on the edge of the hatchery. Pour 1 liter of lukewarm water into the bottle (I made a mark on the bottle so that I didn’t have to measure the water every time) and add a heaping teaspoon of table salt. I use sea salt, which is commonly available in grocery stores. Start aeration to actively mix the water, and when the salt is dissolved, add the Artemia eggs. The amount depends on the number of fish being fed, and it should be noted that the eggs are very small, so, for example, half a teaspoon of eggs will yield a significant amount of Artemia nauplii.

Ak sme scedili dostatočné množstvo artémií, odsatú vodu vylejeme späť do liahne, vyfúkneme vodu z hadičky, ktorou sme cedili artémie, zaistíme ventilom (štipcom), pustíme vzduchovanie a pri ďalšom kŕmení postup opakujeme.
Hatching
No further adjustments to conditions are necessary for hatching, although temperatures above 25°C are suitable. I have successfully hatched Artemia even at lower temperatures. However, hatching success depends mainly on the quality of the eggs. With strong aeration, the first Artemia nauplii will start hatching after about 20 hours, so we can start feeding the Artemia the next day. We stop aeration (here it is advisable to have a check valve on the tubing to prevent backflow of water from the bottle to the compressor, or simply disconnect the tubing from the compressor and hang it on the edge of the hatchery with a hook) and wait for about 10 minutes until the hatched Artemia sink down and the empty eggshells float to the surface or get caught on the bottle wall, precisely on the aforementioned notches.
Then, we release the clip (the valve) on the second tubing and filter a portion of the hatchery contents through a very fine cloth into an empty cup. On the cloth, we’ll see a pink-orange mass, which are hatched Artemia. After the first filtering, empty eggshells usually also end up on the cloth. We try to suck up as few eggs as possible, as they could cause digestion problems or even death for the juveniles after consumption. However, I have never observed such problems, and the juveniles usually spit out the empty eggshells. Once we have suctioned a sufficient amount of Artemia, we pour the suctioned water back into the hatchery, blow out the water from the filtering tubing, secure it with a valve (a clip), start aeration, and repeat the process for the next feeding. This way, Artemia can be obtained from one hatching for about 3 days, depending on the feeding frequency. It doesn’t make sense to feed older Artemia, as freshly hatched Artemia are best for young fish. The older the Artemia, the lower their nutritional value. After sieving the last batch of Artemia, we rinse the bottle with clean water and can prepare a fresh solution. In theory, the original solution could be reused, but it is usually already partially cloudy. Considering the cost of salt, it’s not really worth saving, and it’s better to make a fresh solution. Artemia hatch better. Some breeders even report that fresh water with a higher chlorine content improves the hatching rate of the eggs. Final practical advice: If we want to have a regular supply of fresh Artemia, it is good to make several such hatcheries and fill them every 2 days, for example.
Hatching
Veľmi žravý druh patriaci do čeľade Ampullariidae. Je úplne nevhodný do rastlinných akvárií. Obľubuje rastliny a dokáže ich skonzumovať veľké množstvo v krátkej dobe. Napr. do akvárií s africkými cichlidami. Kladie vajíčka v rôsolovitom slize. Bola nájdená v Brazílii, v Hondurase, vo Venezuele, v Paname, v Kostarike, na Floride, v Texase (Alexandra Behrendt).
A highly voracious species belonging to the Ampullariidae family. It is entirely unsuitable for planted aquariums. It favors plants and can consume a large amount of them in a short period. It also feeds on algae, making it suitable for “rocky” tanks without aquatic plants, where it consumes leftover food and algae, including filamentous algae. For example, in aquariums with African cichlids. It lays eggs in a gelatinous slime. It has been found in Brazil, Honduras, Venezuela, Panama, Costa Rica, Florida, and Texas (Alexandra Behrendt).
Fish reproduce exclusively through sexual means. According to the method of reproduction, we distinguish between egg-layers and livebearers. Egg-layers deposit eggs (roe) similar to reptiles, which develop outside the mother’s body after the act of reproduction – oviparous reproduction. Their diameter ranges from 0.8 mm to 6 mm, depending on the species. Eggs, and to a lesser extent, fry, often dislike light, so the eggs are frequently covered – meaning the entire aquarium. This is logical – one must realize that in nature, there is usually more “darkness,” and eggs are typically laid under leaves, among plants, on the bottom, in crevices under rocky ceilings, etc. Unfertilized eggs turn white over time, and they should be removed from the aquarium because they would otherwise decompose unnecessarily, posing a threat to the others.
On the contrary, in livebearing species, eggs develop in the body cavity of the mother, similar to mammals – viviparous reproduction. In cases of rare expulsion of fertilized eggs, we refer to it as ovoviviparity – egg livebearing. The fry often leaves the mother’s body shortly after shedding the last embryonic membranes. The just-hatched offspring is called an eleutherembryo. In livebearing species, eggs essentially develop inside the body, having the same shape and size as those of egg-laying species, but the development takes longer, around 20 – 40 days. Livebearers have a specialized organ called a gonopodium, in the case of the genus Hemirhaphodon androgynous, which they use for reproduction. The shape of the gonopodium is a species-specific characteristic.
The fertility of fish more or less increases with their length and weight. Besides, factors like age, salt content, oxygen, and water temperature also influence it. In livebearing species, male sperm can survive in the female’s body for months – the male fertilizes the female, and this transfer of genetic information remains viable for a long period, usually spanning 3 – 4 broods, but cases of 11 broods have been recorded. Interestingly, among fish, there are also hermaphroditic species – capable of both male and female reproduction. However, the vast majority of fish are gonochoristic – functionally females produce female gametes, and males produce male gametes. When breeding, one should avoid inbreeding. If forced into it, it is better to mate a parent with offspring rather than sister with brother. Long-term inbreeding leads to degenerative disorders, such as spinal curvature, other morphological deviations, and reduced viability.
In nature, there is also mating between relatives, but it occurs in isolated areas where access to migration and thus the mixing of genetic information is restricted. It is not excluded that direct mating occurs between the offspring of a single parent, but due to the size of the area and the population’s size, it involves mating between cousins. Since there is much higher natural selection in such cases, it often happens that a population reproducing in such a related manner is more viable than a population whose area practically prohibits inbreeding due to sufficient space. However, this condition holds true only when the conditions are ideal; once environmental factors change rapidly and negatively, the non-isolated population suddenly gains an advantage. Activities leading to reproduction are among the most beautiful aspects that fish can provide when kept. The efforts of males, showcasing themselves to females, are very intriguing. Some are capable of pursuing females for most of the day, while others engage in this activity only during specific periods and under certain conditions. That’s why it’s advisable to ensure tight cover glasses, especially during reproduction attempts, as females, in particular, often try to escape from pursuing males, even jumping above the water surface.**
Tetras often lay their eggs, a behavior we view as a challenge from a breeding perspective. For tetras, the use of a spawning grid or filter is typical. The grid can be placed on the bare bottom throughout the tank. During spawning, the eggs fall to the bottom, where the grid is positioned slightly above to prevent the parents from reaching the eggs. Of course, the grid can be placed differently, but the key is to prevent adult fish from reaching the eggs or to make it more difficult for them. The material used for the grid varies, depending on the size of the fish and the eggs it is intended for. Commonly used materials include various types of mesh used in gardening and similar activities. There is also a form of perforated glass grid available.
A breeding box is a container, enclosed space, or aquarium where fry are born. I’ll skip the tank, as commercially, synthetic materials are used. These are suitable for livebearers. They are designed so that, for example, a gravid guppy can give birth to its young inside. There are fundamentally two types: in the first, the newborn fish leave the mother’s body and fall through slots to the bottom of the breeding box, where the female cannot reach them. In the second, the fish leave the mother into free water – in this case, of course, this aquarium must be without other fish, as newly born fish would soon be eaten. Both types of breeding boxes float on the water – they move on the surface. A better alternative to the material used for such breeding boxes is the use of a net, similar to a spawning grid. The net can be stitched, for example, into the desired shape using a nylon thread, and secured, for example, with polystyrene to prevent it from sinking to the bottom. The advantage of this solution is evident – the net can be much larger than that of a store-bought breeding box, and overall, it can be tailor-made. However, I have drilled small holes in store-bought breeding boxes to widen the gaps for fry escape. Ivan Vyslúžil discusses self-made breeding boxes in this article.
Fine-leaved plants, tank walls, plant leaves, stones on the surface, or the ceilings of stone “caves,” etc., can serve as substrate for certain species. Various infusions are prepared for some fish species. The Black Neon Tetra (Hypessobrycon herbertaxelrodi) is a notable example – infusions are often prepared for this species, as well as for other tetras.
The reproduction of cichlids is arguably one of the most intriguing aspects among fish. For instance, a female Purple Spotted Gudgeon selects a suitable cave, such as a coconut shell, where she can hold her offspring (fry) for several hours. Of course, spawning has occurred before. Especially among American cichlid species, pairs must find each other and often remain together for their entire lives. Some species lay eggs on a substrate, such as a flat stone or the roof of a stone, etc. Princess cichlids, like Neolamprologus brichardi, lay eggs underneath a stone. This species is quite intolerant of each other, so dominant pairs eliminate their competition and then fully engage in reproduction. Once they start, they often bring new generations at fairly regular intervals. Their eggs are weakly pink, relatively large, with a quantity ranging from 20 to 100. Many cichlid species belong to the so-called mouthbrooders. These are species that keep their offspring in their buccal cavity (mouth), and mouthbrooders can also be found among other taxa, such as species of the Betta genus. However, their parental instinct is often quite weak; it is, of course, species-specific. For example, Neolamprologus brichardi and most American cichlids fiercely defend their offspring, unlike Malawian genera like Pseudotropheus, Maylandia, Melanochromis, Labidochromis. They diligently keep the eggs in the buccal cavity, let them absorb the yolk sac, prepare them for leaving the maternal oral cavity, and release them. Sometimes it happens that they collect them again for some time, and this phenomenon can be repeated, but when they stop doing so, their parental instinct quickly diminishes. The male, essentially protecting the female after fertilization, now often considers the offspring as intruders or a disturbance to the menu. The female is similar, but she might make a “mistake” at first. Initially, she ignores the fry, as if keeping her distance, but over time, she may start chasing her offspring.
Typical catfish, such as Corydoras, lay eggs that simply dry up in nature, awaiting the impulse for embryo development brought by rain during the rainy season. Simulating this process is the foundation for successful reproduction in captivity, in our tanks. After spawning in the aquarium, it is necessary to collect the eggs and place them in a dry location. After a species-specific period, the eggs are picked up, placed in a suitable tank, and covered with water. Reproduction continues until the young fish hatch. These fish grow rapidly because one-year species must mature quickly to reproduce on their own.
Female Corydoras catfish, like Corydoras aeneus, gather fertilized eggs and temporarily carry them under their pectoral fins, which are folded into a so-called pocket. Later, they stick them to the glass and plants. Corydoras catfish reproduce in schools and prefer lower temperatures. A known method for stimulation involves using threads and daily lowering the water level while exchanging it for fresh, cold water, simulating an upcoming period of abundance and rain. Corydoras catfish usually pay little attention to their own eggs, but it is recommended to move them. However, many species are not as easily reproducible, such as Corydoras sterbai, C. panda, etc.
The most commonly occurring sucker fish in aquariums, Ancistrus cf. cirrhosus, reproduces in cavities or under stones. Breeders use aids such as glass bottles, PVC pipes, etc. The male typically chooses his female. The male guards the eggs for a certain period, but he doesn’t have as many defenses as larger predatory species, nor is he as tenacious. However, in a typical community tank, the sucker fish has a chance to reproduce and provide offspring.
About Angelfish – Pterophyllum scalare, it is often said that they require water pressure – a high water column. However, I have had the opportunity to see them breeding in very small tanks, no higher than 25 cm. Since in their native habitat they usually spawn on the leaves of tall plants, we can provide them with an open piece of a PET bottle as a spawning substrate. When the angelfish lay eggs, the guarding and care for them is usually done by the parent, but as soon as the fry start swimming freely, the adult angelfish often mercilessly devours them. This behavior is not typical of their natural habitat, and sometimes, in an aquarium, the adults may not consume the fry.
Livebearers are suitable for beginners in terms of reproduction. A previously mentioned breeding box can be used for them, or a homemade sieve can also be effective. They reproduce very willingly with a bit of effort. The Mexican swordtail is almost always a cannibal toward its young, and platies exhibit similar behavior, although sailfin mollies usually spare their own offspring. When they mature and begin reproducing, the birthing cycle repeats roughly every 4 – 5 weeks, as is typical for most livebearers. Guppies and platies can have up to 100 offspring, while an adult swordtail can have up to 200. Since they are livebearing species, giving birth to live young, there is a fertility spot in the abdominal region indicating the sexual maturity of the females. One mating by the male may be sufficient for 3 – 4 broods. In the days leading up to birth, the spot enlarges and darkens. Black Molly – a dark cultivated form of Poecilia shenops, is a bit more challenging to breed because it requires slightly warmer water and the fertility spot is not visible. With Black Molly’s offspring, we have the opportunity to observe the manifestation of genes in their natural state, as not all young fish will be entirely black, unlike their presumably all-black parents. This is because Black Molly is a cultivated form that is not entirely biologically stable. It may even happen that some individuals have speckles when young, and later the black pigment increases to the point that they become entirely black. A breeding box or a sieve is also suitable for Black Molly’s reproduction, providing protection for the hatched fry against the adults’ voraciousness.
Labyrinth fish usually inhabit warm areas where there is a lot of variety in the water, including fish, plants, organic debris, wood, etc. Adult individuals breathe atmospheric oxygen. Many labyrinth fish species build bubble nests – they utilize their ability to take in atmospheric air for protecting their eggs. The bubble nest is formed by air particles that the fish mashes in its mouth. It floats on the water surface, meaning that it’s not suitable to have strong water flow in the aquarium, as it could damage the structure of the bubble nest. Floating plants like Riccia, Salvinia, Myriophyllum, Lemna, etc., serve as support for the nest. Typically, the male builds the nest, but in some species or individuals, it may not be necessary to remove them from the tank after spawning. This breeding method is common among gouramis, bettas, and Colisa species. Regarding Colisa – Colisa is known for having one of the smallest fry, so it is recommended to keep the water level during their development below 10 cm. They are very sensitive to temperature changes and cold, so it is advisable to ensure a well-sealed lid or something similar, maintaining a constant water temperature and air space above the water surface. Filtration should be very weak or none, and water flow minimal or none. The critical period is during labyrinth formation, which occurs around 50 days, and extra caution is recommended during this time to minimize potential losses. Before Betta splendens breeding, males may exhibit gentlemanly behavior, where they pause in physiological need to breathe air, waiting to resume the fight. Male-male confrontations in Betta can be quite intense.
Aquatic plants reproduce in aquariums and often in nature, mainly asexually. Vegetative reproduction occurs through various methods, such as cuttings, runners, offsets, etc. Sexual reproduction is not as common as in their terrestrial relatives. In aquariums, plants often do not bloom, and pollination, the beginning of successful reproduction, occurs even less frequently due to spatial barriers.
Systematicky ide o kôrovce podtriedy Phyllopoda, Ostracoda, Copepoda a o kmeň Rotifera. Rad perloočiek patrí do podtriedy Phyllopoda – lupeňonôžky. triedy kôrovcov Crustacea. Niektoré z nich: Daphnia pulex, D. magna, D. cucullata, D. psittacea, D. pulex, D. longispina, Bosmina longirostris, Scapholeberis mucronata, Camptocercus rectirostris, Leptodora kindti, Ceriodaphnia, Chydorus sphaericus, Euricercus lamellatus, Sida cristallina, Rynchotalona, Simocephalus vetulus, Moina rectirostris, M. macropa.
Cyklop patrí do podradu Cyclopoidea, radu Podoplea, podtriedy Copepoda – veslonôžky, triedy Crustacea, kmeňa Arthtopoda – článkonožce. Ide napr. o Cyclops albidus, C. strenuus, Canthocamptus staphylinus, Diaptomus coeruleus, D. graciloides.
Odporúčam neliať do akvária vodu z lokality, odkiaľ sme si potravu zadovážili. Potom nám už nič nebráni v tom, aby sme naše ryby nakŕmili, snáď len to, aby sme nenaliali priveľa vody do nádrže, treba na to myslieť dopredu a radšej odliať vodu z nádrže ešte pred kŕmením. Multimedikal do takéhoto vedra.
Systematically, it concerns the arthropods of the suborders Phyllopoda, Ostracoda, Copepoda, and the class Rotifera. These tiny creatures live in stagnant water, and ideal conditions for them are provided by organic pollution. Aquarium enthusiasts commonly refer to everything smaller than a copepod as “dust.” Aquarium enthusiasts usually do not distinguish them, so the term “dust” quickly caught on – they are suitable, for example, for newly hatched angelfish or fry. The order of seed shrimps belongs to the suborder Phyllopoda – branchiopods of the class Crustacea. Some of them include: Daphnia pulex, D. magna, D. cucullata, D. psittacea, D. longispina, Bosmina longirostris, Scapholeberis mucronata, Camptocercus rectirostris, Leptodora kindti, Ceriodaphnia, Chydorus sphaericus, Euricercus lamellatus, Sida cristallina, Rynchotalona, Simocephalus vetulus, Moina rectirostris, M. macropa. Daphnia range in size from 0.2 to 5 mm. The genus Daphnia includes about 150 species, divided into three subgenera: Daphnia, Hyalodaphnia, and Ctenodaphnia. Their lifespan in nature strongly depends on temperature. In cold water, they can live three times longer than in warm water. They are also suitable for toxicological studies of the ecosystem. Some species are endangered according to the IUCN: Daphnia nivalis, D. coronata, D. occcidentalis, D. jollyi.
Moina is a small daphnia, reaching up to 2.5 mm, and is found in calm waters, often of poor quality, highly polluted, and low in oxygen. Seed shrimps reproduce through parthenogenesis (without fertilization). It is a typical example where all individuals are females during favorable periods. Only in less favorable conditions, males suddenly appear, mating in a sexual reproduction process, ensuring the transfer of genetic information. In spring, females hatch from the eggs laid in the fall. They can be caught similarly to cyclops and copepods, using a sieve made of miller’s silk or possibly a coarser sieve, such as from cheesecloth or muslin. Daphnia are larger than cyclops but are not energetically valuable because a significant part of their body is water and a solid cuticle, forming their skeleton. Moina achieves the highest yield in potential artificial cultivation. For fish, it is a more energy-rich diet than “ordinary” daphnia and can be compared to cyclops. Daphnia reach their highest abundance in summer.
Cyclops belong to the suborder Cyclopoidea, order Podoplea, suborder Copepoda – copepods, class Crustacea, phylum Arthopoda – arthropods. Examples include Cyclops albidus, C. strenuus, Canthocamptus staphylinus, Diaptomus coeruleus, D. graciloides. Cyclops are very suitable fish food, relatively nutritious, and can be qualitatively protein-rich. Under certain conditions, they can also be bred. Their population curves fluctuate widely, and it’s not uncommon to catch a huge number of cyclops one day and almost none the next day. Generally, their population peaks in spring and autumn. Cyclops are relatively predatory, so it is necessary to be careful when feeding smaller fry to avoid depletion or harm to the fish population.
Cyclops, copepods, and dust can survive in larger quantities in a bucket with aeration for up to a week. Ideally, it is best to feed the collected food immediately. If that is not possible and you don’t want to freeze the remainder, partial preservation is possible with strong aeration. Everything depends on the quantity. Plankton can also be stored outdoors, in the cellar, or on the balcony where direct sunlight does not reach – similar to daphnia, with the difference that daphnia are more sensitive to oxygen depletion.
Rotifers constitute a separate class Rotifera. They are very suitable for fish fry. They are named after their typical movement – swirling, which is constantly evident. Rotifers can be captured using nets made of miller’s silk or monofilament. Some rotifers include Philodina, Synchaeta, Lepadella, Pterodina, Copeus, Euchlanis dilatata, Dinocharis, Keratella quadrata, Keratella cochlearis, Filina, Cephalodella, Brachionus, Pedalion, predatory Asplanchna (Petr Novák). They reproduce by eggs, sometimes even parthenogenetically. They live for 84 – 108 hours, become sexually mature within 12 to 36 hours, and the female lays eggs every 4 hours. The life cycle depends on temperature, with higher temperatures resulting in a faster cycle. Rotifers’ advantage is that they move relatively calmly in the tank, which is advantageous for less agile fish fry. The digestive cycle of rotifers is only 10 – 20 minutes. Brachionus plicatilis is offered as a starter, which requires salty water, or freshwater Brachionus calyciflorus. They reach 25 – 50% of the size of freshly hatched artemia (Petr Novák).
Flea Collection:
To catch fleas, a sieve made of women’s stockings, cheesecloth, miller’s silk, or ideally monofilament is needed. However, dust can pass through stockings, cheesecloth, and miller’s silk. The sieve is good when it is on a long stick, even one longer than three meters. Aquarium companies sell collapsible sieves for catching such food, although, of course, a similar tool can be homemade for this purpose. Miller’s silk is challenging to find; monofilament is sold in fabric stores. Its price is low, and occasionally, even photographers buy monofilament, and it can serve as a diffuser. The sieve catches food in the water best when making figure-eights. Besides fleas – crustaceans, copepods, and sometimes a small number of water fleas can be caught. Remember that if you are catching in a fishing area, you need a permit from the fishing union to catch plankton. Caught food can be sorted using various screens with different-sized mesh. This way, food caught together for different-sized fish can be selectively separated, from adults to fry.
Daphnia are relatively sensitive during oxygen transfer. Therefore, it is better to transport them in so-called frames, or with as little water as possible. They can last longer in a larger bucket, with a lower concentration of daphnia and assuming that nothing decomposes in the bucket. In colder seasons, it is quite easy. In summer, shorter periods of aeration during the day can be provided for daphnia, and at night, if it is not 30°C outside, they can be placed on the balcony.
Instructions for Flea Farming:
This type of food occurs from the melting of the ice until late autumn. The population density of cyclops and rotifers is highest early in spring and autumn. In contrast, daphnia peak during the summer. It can be said that they are biological filters. They feed on algae, protozoa, bacteria. They can also eliminate cloudiness in the aquarium, provided they do not become part of the fish food chain or part of a strongly suctioned filter. This ability is actually a prerequisite for their artificial breeding. Fleas can also be bred independently. Ideally, large pits are suitable, into which organic waste is poured, e.g., feces, kefir, whey, water is added, and cyclops will undoubtedly appear. Organic material needs to be replenished over time. It can be, for example: feces, decomposing remnants, blood, kefir, spoiled milk, whey, horse dung. Such a substrate, which decomposes, forms a nutrient base for bacteria, protozoa, which decompose this “waste.” These decomposers are food for daphnia, cyclops, rotifers, and small crustaceans. For proper breeding, it is advisable to promote decomposition using yeast. There are known cases where a breeder utilized part of a canal similarly. Quantity-wise, it is ideal to have small daphnia – moina in a similar “device.” It will provide four times higher yield compared to regular daphnia. Pure cyclops are also an excellent source of live food. It is a common practice for breeders who keep daphnia near suckers. It is enough to occasionally throw, for example, lettuce, cabbage, etc., into the aquarium. Both suckers and daphnia get enough, as similar material decomposes quickly in the water. In this way, breeders ensure a constant supply of daphnia, of course, not intensive culture, but for variety or a rare source of live food, often the only one in the breeding that doesn’t take up any extra space. The condition, of course, is that no other fish than suckers are present in such an aquarium – sucker fish do not eat live daphnia. If you place a bottle of water in the sun on the window, wait until it turns green, and add cyclops and a few drops of milk every two weeks, it is possible to maintain cyclops in it. Of course, not in large quantities. After a short time, you can move the bottle out of direct sunlight.
Feeding Fleas:
I recommend not pouring water from the location where we obtained the food into the aquarium unless we caught it “densely” – without water, for example, in frames. Ideally, pour fleas through a sieve and transfer the sieve’s contents into clean water. If there is any dirt left in our live food, wait until it settles on the bottom and collect fleas without it. You can also use a tube to help. Afterward, nothing prevents us from feeding our fish; perhaps only to avoid pouring too much water into the tank, think about it beforehand, and it’s better to drain the water from the tank before feeding. Those who are afraid or do not know the location can drop, for example, Multimedica into such a bucket. I am a supporter of the idea that live food cannot endanger healthy fish unless it is explicitly infected; on the contrary, it strengthens them.
Einige Rotiferen sind Philodina, Synchaeta, Lepadella, Pterodina, Copeus, Euchlanis dilatata, Dinocharis, Keratella quadrata, Keratella cochlearis, Filina, Cephalodella, Brachionus, Pedalion, räuberisches Asplanchna (Petr Novák).
