Hits: 13916

Turbatrix aceti – háďatko octové biologicky patrí medzi hlístice a medzi Nematoda. Mikry nesmú byť zatvorené, do uzáverov odporúčam vyvŕtať malé otvory.

Časom sa tekutý obsah vyčíri a my môžeme pozorovať oblaky mikier vznášajúcich sa vo fľaši. Mikry sú dobre viditeľné, keď do fľaše pozeráme proti svetlu.

Turbatrix aceti, also known as vinegar eels, biologically belongs to the group of roundworms and to the Nematoda phylum. At room temperature, they live for an average of 55 days, while at low temperatures, they can survive up to 10 months. Under favorable conditions, the vinegar eel culture can multiply twentyfold in 8 – 10 days (Petr Novák). They reproduce in relatively large quantities, although their size makes them suitable for feeding fry and small fish, such as bettas and neon tetras. We can culture them, for example, in PET bottles, where vinegar is mixed with water in a 1:1 ratio. Apple cider vinegar or fermented vinegar can also be used. We add a small amount of apple, peach, or other fruit to the vinegar. Ideally, this fruit should be blended into a pulp using a blender. The substrate should not be too much, or else the bottle will start to ferment. The culture should not be sealed tightly; I recommend drilling small holes in the caps.

Over time, the liquid content will become clear, and we can observe clouds of vinegar eels floating in the bottle. The vinegar eels are well visible when we look into the bottle against the light or shine a flashlight on them. Vinegar eels are very fine feed, even finer than regular” microworms. The finest available sieves for rotifers, copepods, etc., are not suitable for successful straining; a mesh size of 5 μm is required.

Feeding vinegar eels is a challenge. I do it by pouring them into a bottle with a neck that can be sealed from the inside, for example, with cotton, cloth, or filter material. Ordinary wine bottles with a more or less straight, narrow neck are ideal for vinegar eels. I pour the vinegar eels into this bottle up to the narrowed point, seal it, and then pour in fresh cold water. Vinegar eels are anti-gravitational and tend to move towards cleaner water. Within 24 hours, the majority of these small organisms will be strained into the clean water. I extract them from this using a syringe or simply pour them out and feed them to fish. The substrate that was under the seal is then poured back into the PET bottle with the culture. The culture content can last for a very long time, up to 2 – 3 years. I occasionally replace the PET bottle. A similar but faster method is if we have a so-called U‑tube.

Potom ich stačí pochytať a uzavrieť, zabezpečiť prísun potravy. Problém však nastane, ak ich chceme skŕmiť. Keď totiž otvoríme uzáver, mušky za normálnych okolností vyletia. Riešenie existuje – stačí ich omráčiť chladom, napr. z chladničky.

Drosophila flies are small flies that everyone has likely encountered, much like the common mosquito. Who wouldn’t recognize the tiny flies that appear near fruit, grapes, where vegetables ferment, sour, decompose? Drosophila melanogaster – the vinegar fly, fruit fly, is perhaps the organism most widely used and known by biologists, doctors worldwide. It’s willing to breed easily in captivity, with a rapid reproductive cycle. Genetic engineers have literally triumphed with this small fly, and research continues. Figuratively speaking, it’s like a test rabbit. In addition, there are Drosophila funebris and Drosophila hydei. Novák mentions the golden form with white eyes, the Turkish – Afghan form, the species Drosophila buzzatii, D. muelleri. They contain 51% protein, 36% fat, very small amounts of carbohydrates, 5% minerals in dry weight. Water content is about 61% (Novák). Drosophila serve as food not only for fish but also for birds and reptiles. The English-speaking world knows it as the fruit fly or vinegar fly.

Aquarists, and finally terrarists, prefer to use the so-called wingless form – vestigial – antlered – strap form. This cultivated form of the wing cannot fly, as its wings are significantly stunted. If we are breeding a colony, we must ensure that the wild form does not get mixed in, as nature’s genetic information shows strong dominance, and only one organism can teach” the entire population to fly. If we have no other option, we can also keep wild Drosophila. It is enough to leave some fruit exposed for some time, ideally mechanically disturbing it, and the flies will literally fly in during the summer. Then it’s enough to catch and contain them, providing a food source. However, a problem arises if we want to feed them. When we open the container, the flies will normally fly out. There is a solution – just stun them with cold, for example, from the refrigerator.

Používam mrazené droždie, z ktorého odrežem kúsok a vymiešam ho v studenej, alebo vlažnej vode. Zmes pripravujem v mikrovlnke. Všetko premiešam, dám do mikrovlnky na dvadsať minút. Po skončení premiešam. Výhody sú zjavné. Nič sa nepripáli a dvadsať minút sa môžem venovať niečomu inému. Varenú zmes nechám vychladnúť, minimálne dovtedy, kým neviem na ňom udržať bez ťažkostí ruku. Urýchliť chladenie môžeme postavením hrnca do studenej vody..

Túto pripravenú zmes potom nakladám to plastových pohárov, napr. do odrezaných PET fliaš.

Chov mušiek každopádne vyžaduje skúsenosti a starostlivosť.

Instructions for breeding Drosophila

In a pot, mix breadcrumbs, sugar, ground oats (preferably ground), semolina, or a bit of wheat bran. I recommend more oats and less flour. The flour can be smooth, semi-coarse, coarse, or semolina. Thoroughly mix these dry ingredients. Then add water, about 4 times the volume of the dry ingredients, and mix the mixture thoroughly. Heat the mixture while stirring frequently. It’s not necessary for the mixture to boil; it just needs to solidify. Once the mixture is sufficiently solid (literally not flowing), you can remove the pot from the heat. While cooking, you can prepare the yeast. I use frozen yeast, from which I cut off a piece and mix it in cold or lukewarm water. I prepare the mixture in the microwave. I mix everything, put it in the microwave for twenty minutes. After finishing, I stir again. The advantages are obvious. Nothing burns, and for twenty minutes, I can focus on something else. I let the cooked mixture cool, at least until I can touch it without difficulty. We can speed up the cooling process by placing the pot in cold water. When the porridge has sufficiently cooled, I pour in the prepared yeast with water and mix thoroughly. Ideally, let the yeast sit for 12 hours at rest. We can also use vinegar, which I added together with the yeast in a small amount. Vinegar is an attractant for flies, and yeast is an effective weapon against mold.

I then load this prepared mixture into plastic cups, for example, into cut PET bottles. A two-centimeter layer is enough. Then I tear off a piece of toilet paper, crumple it, and throw it on the porridge. Toilet paper serves to provide resting space for the flies but is not necessary. It must not completely cover the porridge. Then, from a established culture, I transfer the flies – I pour at least 30 individuals into a new culture. I cover it with a napkin or cloth and seal it with two rubber bands. Flies reproduce quickly; one female has 5070 offspring, and the reproductive cycle, under normal conditions, at room temperature, takes 12 – 16 days. That’s the case with D. melanogaster. D. hydei has a cycle of about 24 days. Flies survive for an average of three months, then despite the yeast, they still mold. Sometimes the substrate dries out; other times it gets too wet. If it’s dry, just add water. Sometimes the porridge is too liquid, then more toilet paper helps absorb moisture. Whether the porridge is too wet can also be seen by the fact that larvae climb up more. In extreme cases, the larvae can chew through the napkin. If the flies are hungry, they are smaller – this often happens when there is too little substrate or when it is dried out. In that case, sprinkle the culture with water or transfer the flies to a new or proper culture. Some terrarists feed the flies because they are too small for them.

If we see signs of mold in the flies within two weeks of starting, let’s first look for the error. Such mold is not okay; it’s better to throw away the flies or carefully transfer them to another culture. There is a possibility that mites could get into the flies, but that has never happened to me in all these years. If it does happen to you, feed the flies and throw away the culture. Use a healthy culture for breeding. Breeding flies requires experience and care. It’s interesting that every summer, when it gets very warm for a long time, meaning above 32°C, then two weeks later, individuals with large wings spontaneously appear in several cultures, about a quarter of the population. When it cools down, the flies regain their normal appearance. This happens to me every year, usually around July 20, when temperatures rise to forty degrees. I assume it’s an adaptation process when the flies are under great biological pressure due to an abiotic factor.

Násadu odgumičkujeme, servítok zahodíme, otočíme ju a buchnutím dlane vysypeme na hladinu. Aby sme zabránili prípadnému padnutiu servítka s kašou do nádrže, robíme to opatrne, a pomôcť si môžeme vsunutím jedného prstu cez otvor.

Feeding the Flies

Feeding flies is relatively straightforward. You just need access to the surface. Unfasten the culture, discard the tissue, flip it over, and tap it gently with your palm to empty it onto the surface. To prevent the tissue with the paste from falling into the tank, do this carefully, and you can use one finger to help through the hole. When feeding flies, pay attention to whether the fish are catching them. If it’s a new type of food for the fish, it may take some time for them to accept it. Of course, if you were keeping, for example, armored catfish, flies wouldn’t be the right choice for them. But, for example, tetras will be very excited about flies :-). Certainly, stress can also cause fish not to pay adequate attention to food.

If the flies have time, they will find” their way to the edges of the tank and try to get out of the water. It’s interesting that most of them, after being freed from the water, continuously march” along the edges of the side glass. Presumably, they can smell their friends,” so their attempt to escape is not great. If we want to reuse the flies we’ve poured for the fish, cover them again with a clean tissue. The decision is up to us, depending on whether there is still something left to hatch.

Fish

The circulatory system of fish is simple, and the nervous system is similarly constructed with a simple brain and spinal cord. Fish breathe through gills, but some species have evolved alternative methods of air intake. For example, armored catfish breathe atmospheric oxygen through the intestinal mucosa. Labyrinth fish, like Betta fish, use a structure called the labyrinth for the same purpose. The labyrinth is a relatively complex organ that develops, for example, in Betta fish and gouramis around 50 days after their birth. Aquarium fish can live anywhere from 0.5 to 20 years. For a very rough comparison, smaller species tend to have shorter lifespans, while larger species can live longer. For instance, neon tetras live for 2 – 3 years, danios, tetras, and guppies for 4 – 5 years, killifish for 1 – 4 years, Ancistrus plecos for 8 – 10 years, and larger cichlids can live between 10 and 20 years. Corydoras catfish often live up to 18 years. Aquarium fish grow gradually, and it can be said that they grow throughout their entire lives. Generally, when compared to nature, non-predatory species usually do not reach the sizes they do in the wild, whereas predatory species often exceed their natural sizes. This is due to competition and our care and feeding. However, if we do not provide enough space for our fish, they simply won’t grow much. For example, keeping a blue acara in a 20-liter tank won’t allow it to reach its full size. But if we provide a larger tank over time, the fish can grow significantly. Alternatively, fish grow, but in a larger tank, they grow much faster. Some fish may not receive proper nutrition, and hobbyists say they are stunted.” This can be caused, for example, by feeding them differently than they were at another hobbyist’s place. There are numerous reasons for slow growth or its cessation. Some taxa genetically grow faster. For example, killifish must be born, mature, reproduce, and soon die within a single season — about six months.

Fish exhibit variable body temperatures; they are poikilothermic organisms, meaning they cannot regulate their own body heat and depend on the temperature of the surrounding environment. In practice, a fish in water at 25°C will have a body temperature of 25°C. It’s essential to realize that water has different thermal properties than, for example, air or metal. More energy is required to heat water than air, and similarly, more effort is needed to cool it down. Another article delves into these energy costs in more detail.

You may have noticed that a large body of water can influence the surrounding climate. Water retains heat, cooling the area in summer and warming it in winter. The same principle applies to the sea. Heat from our bodies dissipates much faster in water, about 200 times faster in the same temperature as in the air. It’s useful to know the thermal properties of water. Higher water temperatures often make fish feel better, but this temperature also shortens their lifespan. Since they cannot maintain a stable body temperature, their metabolism is more strained at higher temperatures than they are genetically adapted to, leading to increased fatigue. Higher temperatures can reduce the fish’s lifespan by half. Higher temperatures also decrease their overall condition and defensive capabilities over time. Fish can endure both high and very low temperatures in the short term. The temperature they can tolerate is 43°C. Beyond this limit, fish suffocate, lose coordination, and perish. Similar behavior occurs after the temperature drops below 5°C. It’s evident that some species are more resilient than others. I refer, of course, to common species from tropical and subtropical regions.

Fish perceive light relatively weakly. Compared to mammals, insects, and cephalopods, their vision is relatively poor. Their shortsighted eyes are not well-developed senses. Fish don’t have eyelids or tear glands. Fish can hear infrasound, although we know little about how they receive and process sound. In any case, they don’t hear our regular sounds. Their hearing organs are more organs of balance. The lateral line is an organ that can do a lot. It helps, for example, blind individuals orient themselves very effectively. They likely perceive waves, pressure, direction, flow, electromagnetic stimuli, food, and obstacles with great precision and adjust their behavior accordingly.

Fish also have touch and smell cells. Taste cells are found in their mouths, as expected, but a significant number is located on the fins. It’s interesting that a fish can touch its food with its fin and determine whether it is palatable or not. Fish are characterized by sexual dimorphism. However, some species of livebearers can, under certain circumstances, change their gender. This phenomenon is most common in the Mexican swordtail (Xiphophorus helleri). If there is a high prevalence of females in an aquarium, meaning a shortage of males, some females can change into males — developing a sword, gonopodium, etc. Many such males are, however, infertile. I have experienced this in my own practice when breeding swordtails for an extended period. Gender change also occurs in other livebearer species but not as frequently as in X. helleri. Concerning fertility, it’s interesting that the later the growth of the male’s sword begins — essentially maturing — the more fertile the male tends to be. However, as mentioned in the previous paragraph, males that change gender are often entirely infertile. Early males, where the sword and gonopodium develop at an early age, have a higher predisposition to infertility.

Plants

Aquatic plants, or rather water plants found in aquariums, are very closely related to their terrestrial counterparts. They contain vascular bundles called veins, which are usually visible. Plants respire throughout the entire 24-hour cycle, absorbing carbon dioxide and water during the day, with sufficient light, to produce carbohydrates (building materials), primarily for consumers, and life-giving oxygen. Unlike terrestrial plants, aquatic plants are adapted to the aquatic environment so that nutrient intake and respiration occur through the entire surface of the plant, often through the roots. Water plants do not have stomata — terrestrial plants have stomata on the lower side of their leaves. Plants produce oxygen through photosynthesis. When we observe oxygen production by plants — bubbles, the oxygen concentration in the cell has risen above 40 mg/l. However, due to the significantly different physical and chemical conditions and the overall character of aquatic plants, photosynthesis in aquatic plants occurs much slower than in terrestrial plants — thus, growth increments are smaller.

Fische

Fische nehmen Licht relativ schwach wahr.

Hits: 39242

Systematicky ide o kôrovce podtriedy Phyllopoda, Ostracoda, Copepoda a o kmeň Rotifera. Rad perloočiek patrí do podtriedy Phyllopoda – lupeňonôžky. triedy kôrovcov Crustacea. Niektoré z nich: Daphnia pulex, D. magna, D. cucullata, D. psittacea, D. pulex, D. longispina, Bosmina longirostris, Scapholeberis mucronata, Camptocercus rectirostris, Leptodora kindti, Ceriodaphnia, Chydorus sphaericus, Euricercus lamellatus, Sida cristallina, Rynchotalona, Simocephalus vetulus, Moina rectirostris, M. macropa.

Cyklop patrí do podradu Cyclopoidea, radu Podoplea, podtriedy Copepoda – veslonôžky, triedy Crustacea, kmeňa Arthtopoda – článkonožce. Ide napr. o Cyclops albidus, C. strenuus, Canthocamptus staphylinus, Diaptomus coeruleus, D. graciloides.

Odporúčam neliať do akvária vodu z lokality, odkiaľ sme si potravu zadovážili. Potom nám už nič nebráni v tom, aby sme naše ryby nakŕmili, snáď len to, aby sme nenaliali priveľa vody do nádrže, treba na to myslieť dopredu a radšej odliať vodu z nádrže ešte pred kŕmením. Multimedikal do takéhoto vedra.

Systematically, it concerns the arthropods of the suborders Phyllopoda, Ostracoda, Copepoda, and the class Rotifera. These tiny creatures live in stagnant water, and ideal conditions for them are provided by organic pollution. Aquarium enthusiasts commonly refer to everything smaller than a copepod as dust.” Aquarium enthusiasts usually do not distinguish them, so the term dust” quickly caught on – they are suitable, for example, for newly hatched angelfish or fry. The order of seed shrimps belongs to the suborder Phyllopoda – branchiopods of the class Crustacea. Some of them include: Daphnia pulex, D. magna, D. cucullata, D. psittacea, D. longispina, Bosmina longirostris, Scapholeberis mucronata, Camptocercus rectirostris, Leptodora kindti, Ceriodaphnia, Chydorus sphaericus, Euricercus lamellatus, Sida cristallina, Rynchotalona, Simocephalus vetulus, Moina rectirostris, M. macropa. Daphnia range in size from 0.2 to 5 mm. The genus Daphnia includes about 150 species, divided into three subgenera: Daphnia, Hyalodaphnia, and Ctenodaphnia. Their lifespan in nature strongly depends on temperature. In cold water, they can live three times longer than in warm water. They are also suitable for toxicological studies of the ecosystem. Some species are endangered according to the IUCN: Daphnia nivalis, D. coronata, D. occcidentalis, D. jollyi.

Moina is a small daphnia, reaching up to 2.5 mm, and is found in calm waters, often of poor quality, highly polluted, and low in oxygen. Seed shrimps reproduce through parthenogenesis (without fertilization). It is a typical example where all individuals are females during favorable periods. Only in less favorable conditions, males suddenly appear, mating in a sexual reproduction process, ensuring the transfer of genetic information. In spring, females hatch from the eggs laid in the fall. They can be caught similarly to cyclops and copepods, using a sieve made of miller’s silk or possibly a coarser sieve, such as from cheesecloth or muslin. Daphnia are larger than cyclops but are not energetically valuable because a significant part of their body is water and a solid cuticle, forming their skeleton. Moina achieves the highest yield in potential artificial cultivation. For fish, it is a more energy-rich diet than ordinary” daphnia and can be compared to cyclops. Daphnia reach their highest abundance in summer.

Cyclops belong to the suborder Cyclopoidea, order Podoplea, suborder Copepoda – copepods, class Crustacea, phylum Arthopoda – arthropods. Examples include Cyclops albidus, C. strenuus, Canthocamptus staphylinus, Diaptomus coeruleus, D. graciloides. Cyclops are very suitable fish food, relatively nutritious, and can be qualitatively protein-rich. Under certain conditions, they can also be bred. Their population curves fluctuate widely, and it’s not uncommon to catch a huge number of cyclops one day and almost none the next day. Generally, their population peaks in spring and autumn. Cyclops are relatively predatory, so it is necessary to be careful when feeding smaller fry to avoid depletion or harm to the fish population.

Cyclops, copepods, and dust can survive in larger quantities in a bucket with aeration for up to a week. Ideally, it is best to feed the collected food immediately. If that is not possible and you don’t want to freeze the remainder, partial preservation is possible with strong aeration. Everything depends on the quantity. Plankton can also be stored outdoors, in the cellar, or on the balcony where direct sunlight does not reach – similar to daphnia, with the difference that daphnia are more sensitive to oxygen depletion.

Rotifers constitute a separate class Rotifera. They are very suitable for fish fry. They are named after their typical movement – swirling, which is constantly evident. Rotifers can be captured using nets made of miller’s silk or monofilament. Some rotifers include Philodina, Synchaeta, Lepadella, Pterodina, Copeus, Euchlanis dilatata, Dinocharis, Keratella quadrata, Keratella cochlearis, Filina, Cephalodella, Brachionus, Pedalion, predatory Asplanchna (Petr Novák). They reproduce by eggs, sometimes even parthenogenetically. They live for 84108 hours, become sexually mature within 12 to 36 hours, and the female lays eggs every 4 hours. The life cycle depends on temperature, with higher temperatures resulting in a faster cycle. Rotifers’ advantage is that they move relatively calmly in the tank, which is advantageous for less agile fish fry. The digestive cycle of rotifers is only 1020 minutes. Brachionus plicatilis is offered as a starter, which requires salty water, or freshwater Brachionus calyciflorus. They reach 2550% of the size of freshly hatched artemia (Petr Novák).

Flea Collection:

To catch fleas, a sieve made of women’s stockings, cheesecloth, miller’s silk, or ideally monofilament is needed. However, dust can pass through stockings, cheesecloth, and miller’s silk. The sieve is good when it is on a long stick, even one longer than three meters. Aquarium companies sell collapsible sieves for catching such food, although, of course, a similar tool can be homemade for this purpose. Miller’s silk is challenging to find; monofilament is sold in fabric stores. Its price is low, and occasionally, even photographers buy monofilament, and it can serve as a diffuser. The sieve catches food in the water best when making figure-eights. Besides fleas – crustaceans, copepods, and sometimes a small number of water fleas can be caught. Remember that if you are catching in a fishing area, you need a permit from the fishing union to catch plankton. Caught food can be sorted using various screens with different-sized mesh. This way, food caught together for different-sized fish can be selectively separated, from adults to fry.

Daphnia are relatively sensitive during oxygen transfer. Therefore, it is better to transport them in so-called frames, or with as little water as possible. They can last longer in a larger bucket, with a lower concentration of daphnia and assuming that nothing decomposes in the bucket. In colder seasons, it is quite easy. In summer, shorter periods of aeration during the day can be provided for daphnia, and at night, if it is not 30°C outside, they can be placed on the balcony.

Instructions for Flea Farming:

This type of food occurs from the melting of the ice until late autumn. The population density of cyclops and rotifers is highest early in spring and autumn. In contrast, daphnia peak during the summer. It can be said that they are biological filters. They feed on algae, protozoa, bacteria. They can also eliminate cloudiness in the aquarium, provided they do not become part of the fish food chain or part of a strongly suctioned filter. This ability is actually a prerequisite for their artificial breeding. Fleas can also be bred independently. Ideally, large pits are suitable, into which organic waste is poured, e.g., feces, kefir, whey, water is added, and cyclops will undoubtedly appear. Organic material needs to be replenished over time. It can be, for example: feces, decomposing remnants, blood, kefir, spoiled milk, whey, horse dung. Such a substrate, which decomposes, forms a nutrient base for bacteria, protozoa, which decompose this waste.” These decomposers are food for daphnia, cyclops, rotifers, and small crustaceans. For proper breeding, it is advisable to promote decomposition using yeast. There are known cases where a breeder utilized part of a canal similarly. Quantity-wise, it is ideal to have small daphnia – moina in a similar device.” It will provide four times higher yield compared to regular daphnia. Pure cyclops are also an excellent source of live food. It is a common practice for breeders who keep daphnia near suckers. It is enough to occasionally throw, for example, lettuce, cabbage, etc., into the aquarium. Both suckers and daphnia get enough, as similar material decomposes quickly in the water. In this way, breeders ensure a constant supply of daphnia, of course, not intensive culture, but for variety or a rare source of live food, often the only one in the breeding that doesn’t take up any extra space. The condition, of course, is that no other fish than suckers are present in such an aquarium – sucker fish do not eat live daphnia. If you place a bottle of water in the sun on the window, wait until it turns green, and add cyclops and a few drops of milk every two weeks, it is possible to maintain cyclops in it. Of course, not in large quantities. After a short time, you can move the bottle out of direct sunlight.

Feeding Fleas:

I recommend not pouring water from the location where we obtained the food into the aquarium unless we caught it densely” – without water, for example, in frames. Ideally, pour fleas through a sieve and transfer the sieve’s contents into clean water. If there is any dirt left in our live food, wait until it settles on the bottom and collect fleas without it. You can also use a tube to help. Afterward, nothing prevents us from feeding our fish; perhaps only to avoid pouring too much water into the tank, think about it beforehand, and it’s better to drain the water from the tank before feeding. Those who are afraid or do not know the location can drop, for example, Multimedica into such a bucket. I am a supporter of the idea that live food cannot endanger healthy fish unless it is explicitly infected; on the contrary, it strengthens them.

Einige Rotiferen sind Philodina, Synchaeta, Lepadella, Pterodina, Copeus, Euchlanis dilatata, Dinocharis, Keratella quadrata, Keratella cochlearis, Filina, Cephalodella, Brachionus, Pedalion, räuberisches Asplanchna (Petr Novák).
