Ruže – symbol lásky, krásy a vášne

Hits: 230

Ruže k najznámejším okrasným rastlinám sveta, ale botanicky ide o mimoriadne zložitý rod. Ruže – Rosa sú evolučne zložitý rod z čeľade Rosaceae, rozšírený v miernom a subtropickom pásme severnej pologule s veľmi intenzívnou históriou. Ruža môže znamenať prírodný druh, kultúrny hybrid, alebo kultivar (Fougére-Danezan et al., Kew POWO, 2026). Väčšina druhov pochádza z Ázie, menší počet z Európy, Severnej Ameriky a severozápadnej Afriky (Wikipedia). Najstaršie fosílne doklady o existencii ruží pochádzajú z obdobia raných treťohôr, z paleocénu a eocénu (Wikipedia).

Z morfologického hľadiska sú ruže drevnaté kry, prípadne liany s pichliačmi – nie pravými tŕňmi, so striedavými, zvyčajne nepárno perovitými listami a s prirastenými prílistkami. Typický botanický kvet má päť kališných a päť korunných lístkov, mnoho tyčiniek a početné voľné piestiky uzavreté v češuli.

Veľmi dôležitý bol vstup čínskych opakovane kvitnúcich ruží do európskeho šľachtenia od konca 18. storočia, pretože práve ten otvoril cestu k moderným ružiam s remontantným kvitnutím (Nikola Tomljenovič, Ivan Pejič: Taxonomic Review of the Genus Rosa). Čínske ruže boli pestované už v staroveku a ich vstup do Európy v 18. storočí priniesol znak, ktorý zmenil celé šľachtenie. Moderné ruže vznikli zo zložitého šľachtenia európsko-stredomorských a východoázijských.

Medzi historické ruže patria krížence a varianty ruže keltskej, damašské ruže, machové ruže, čínske ruže, čajové ruže, bourbonské ruže, portlandské ruže, noisettky, remontantky, lambertky, pernetky (Wikipedia).

Rozmnožovať ich možno odrezkami, potápaním, delením a semenami (rhs.org.uk). Množenie ruží zároveň ukazuje, prečo je rozdiel medzi planou ružou a záhradným kultivarom taký dôležitý. Plané druhy možno množiť semenami, hoci semená často potrebujú stratifikáciu a potomstvo nemusí byť úplne jednotné.

Hrdza vytvára oranžové až hrdzavé výtrusné ložiská a vošky poškodzujú najmä mäkké mladé výhonky.

Najnovší výskum už pracuje s veľmi presnými genómami a so súborom genetickej rozmanitosti viacerých ruží. Ruže treba chápať ako výsledok dlhej evolúcie, domestifikácie a veľmi zložitej genetickej histórie (Marinus J. M. Smulders et al: In the name of the rose: a roadmap for rose research in the genome era).

V ich kvete sa stretáva estetika so šľachtením, v pichliačoch obrana rastliny, v šípkach ekologická hodnota a v genóme dlhá hybridizácie, polyploidie a domestifikácie. Práve preto ruže nepatria iba do záhonov a kytíc, ale aj do botaniky, evolučnej biológie, záhradníctva a kultúrnych dejín.

Roses are among the best-known ornamental plants in the world, but botanically they represent an exceptionally complex genus. Roses — Rosa — are an evolutionarily complex genus of the family Rosaceae, distributed across the temperate and subtropical zones of the Northern Hemisphere and marked by a very rich history. A rose may mean a wild botanical species, a cultivated hybrid, or a cultivar (Fougére-Danezan et al.; Kew POWO, 2026). Most species originate from Asia, with fewer from Europe, North America, and north-western Africa (Wikipedia). The oldest fossil evidence of roses dates back to the early Tertiary, specifically the Paleocene and Eocene (Wikipedia). The rose is among very ancient flowers. It probably originated in Central Asia and spread across almost the entire Northern Hemisphere (David Trinklein).

The cultivation of roses probably began in Asia about 5,000 years ago, and already in antiquity roses formed part of Chinese imperial gardens, the Egyptian world, Persian culture, and Roman symbolism (David Trinklein). They were also cultivated in Mesopotamia, Persia, and India. Roses probably reached ancient Greece through Alexander the Great. The ancient Romans were great admirers and growers of roses, followed later by Arabs and Turks (Wikipedia). Their domestication reflects aesthetic preferences as well as intercultural contacts between Asia and Europe (Hristina Nunes, Maria Graca Miguel). The rose gradually became a symbol of love, beauty, purity, passion, silence, and mystery (David Trinklein), as well as power and memory (Hristina Nunes, Maria Graca Miguel). The red rose is a well-known symbol of ardent, passionate love; the yellow rose of jealousy; the white rose of the suffering caused by rejected love, and so on. The naturally non-existent black rose has been regarded as a symbol of black magic, mysticism, noble hatred and death, but also of new beginnings. It is also one of the emblems of anarchism (Wikipedia).

From a morphological point of view, roses are woody shrubs, or sometimes lianas, with prickles — not true thorns — alternate, usually imparipinnate leaves, and adnate stipules. A typical botanical flower has five sepals and five petals, many stamens, and numerous free carpels enclosed in a hypanthium. The fruit is the rose hip, a fleshy false fruit containing achenes inside (worldfloraonline.org). Wild species also grow on forest edges, in shrublands, on slopes, and in hedges (kew.org). The rose is also a plant in which nature and culture — the garden — meet very clearly. Wild roses can be important for insects, birds, and small mammals. Simple flowers provide accessible pollen, the leaves are used by some solitary leafcutter bees, and rose hips provide food for birds and mammals in autumn and winter (kew.org). This applies especially to Rosa canina and Rosa laevigata (Hristina Nunes, Maria Graca Miguel). Garden roses, however, have often been selected for traits that humans find beautiful — large double flowers, unusual colours, and long flowering periods. This is why it makes sense in a garden to combine modern cultivars with simpler or botanical roses (kew.org). Rosa damascena and related groups are key plants for perfumery and rose water, while the rose hips of species such as Rosa canina and Rosa laevigata are important in food production and traditional medicine, and some species contain pharmacologically significant metabolites (Hristina Nunes, Maria Graca Miguel).

Genetically, roses are extremely diverse. Their diversity is linked to frequent hybridization between species, different numbers of chromosome sets, and, in some groups, an unusual mode of inheritance. This is why the genus Rosa is taxonomically complex, as is clearly visible, for example, in the so-called dog roses of the section Caninae. For the domestication of modern roses, key traits included repeat flowering, double flowers, and the transformation of stamens into petals. These traits are associated with genes that helped shape the appearance and flowering behaviour of today’s garden roses (Roberts et al.). Caninae are the so-called dog roses. They have a special mode of reproduction. During the formation of sex cells, some chromosomes behave normally, while others do not pair and are inherited unevenly. Put simply, the maternal side transmits a much larger share of genetic information than the pollen. This is one reason why these roses are so difficult to identify and, at the same time, so interesting to scientists (Radka Vozárová: Cytogenetická a genomická analýza genů pro ribozomální RNA u polyploidních rostlin).

The classification of the genus is based on morphological characters. The sections Pimpinellifoliae, Rosa, Caninae, Carolinae, Cinnamomeae, Synstylae, Indicae, Banksianae, Laevigatae, and Bracteatae are distinguished. The introduction of repeat-flowering Chinese roses into European breeding from the end of the 18th century was very important, because it opened the way to modern roses with remontant flowering (Nikola Tomljenovič, Ivan Pejič: Taxonomic Review of the Genus Rosa). Chinese roses had already been cultivated in antiquity, and their arrival in Europe in the 18th century brought a trait that changed the whole course of rose breeding. Modern roses arose from the complex breeding of Euro-Mediterranean and East Asian roses. Historically, roses are therefore divided into wild species, old garden roses, and modern roses. The symbolic beginning of modern roses is usually considered to be the year 1867, when the cultivar La France was introduced (G. Wang).

Today, rose breeding focuses on four major goals: repeat flowering, flower architecture, fragrance, and resistance. The cultivar Old Blush is a key historical and genetic reference point, because it links the old Chinese cultivation tradition with genes important for modern roses. This Chinese cultivar contributed to the development of modern repeat-flowering roses. Repeat flowering, flower doubleness, and the number of petals are all related to genes. The rose thus becomes a model in which we can observe how specific genomic changes create traits that humans perceived for centuries mainly aesthetically. Wild species, however, remain an irreplaceable source of alleles for resistance and adaptation. For example, Rosa laevigata is valued for its high resistance to aphids and very high resistance to black spot and powdery mildew, while wild East Asian roses expand the spectrum of fragrance and colour (Hibrand Saint-Oyant et al.). Rose petals contain mixtures of aromatic essential oils. Their amount varies greatly not only between species and cultivars, but also depending on weather and time of day. Flowers contain the highest amounts in the morning. The main fragrant components are the alcohols geraniol, nerol, and l-citronellol. A garden focused on growing roses for ornamental or research purposes is called a rosarium. The largest rosarium in the world today is the Europa-Rosarium in Sangerhausen near Leipzig (Wikipedia). Rosaria can also be found in the Botanical Garden in , in the Mlyňany Arboretum, and at Borová hora in Zvolen.

Historical roses include hybrids and variants of the Gallic rose, Damask roses, moss roses, Chinese roses, tea roses, Bourbon roses, Portland roses, Noisette roses, hybrid perpetuals, Lambert roses, and Pernetiana roses (Wikipedia). Modern roses include hybrid teas, which were bred from hybrid perpetuals and tea roses. Polyantha roses and polyantha hybrids are crosses between European hybrid perpetuals and the imported multiflora rose. Floribundas arose through hybridization of the two types mentioned above. Grandifloras are the result of crossing floribundas with hybrid teas. English roses were bred to satisfy a period nostalgia for the “good old days” — old European varieties — while also meeting modern requirements for repeat flowering and a wider colour range (Wikipedia).

In addition to origin, roses can also be divided according to habit and use in cultivation (Wikipedia). Bedding roses are usually grown in smaller gardens. Climbing roses have shoots several metres long. Groundcover roses grow in a creeping form, often producing flowers in rich clusters, and are usually derived from the field rose — Rosa arvensis. Shrub roses are vigorous, compact shrubs suitable for solitary planting, for example in parks and gardens. Miniature, or dwarf, roses are low-growing cultivars originally derived from a small natural variety of the Chinese rose (Rosa chinensis var. Minima). Standard roses are not a separate type; they can be produced from most of the preceding types by training a crown on a tall rootstock. By grafting a smaller climbing variety onto a standard rootstock, pendulous, so-called weeping roses are produced (Wikipedia).

For growing roses, the key factors are sun, drainage, and airiness of the stand. Most garden roses thrive in rich, moist, well-drained soil, in a sunny position, with a slightly acidic reaction, and with regular mulching and fertilization. Their nutritional requirements are high, because abundant flowering depletes nutrient reserves. Mulch made from well-rotted compost or manure is recommended, together with supplementary fertilization at the beginning of the season and, in remontant types, also after the first flush of flowering (rhs.org.uk). In autumn, plants should no longer be encouraged to produce soft new growth, so that they mature better before winter (ruze.cz). Instead of frequent surface watering, deep watering is recommended, ideally directed to the roots, for example by drip irrigation. Watering the leaves encourages the spread of diseases, especially black spot, so if overhead watering is used, it is better to do it in the morning or early afternoon, so that the leaves dry before evening (missouri.edu). To protect roses from severe frosts, it is advisable to mound soil or mature compost around them for winter. More delicate varieties can also be covered with conifer branches (Wikipedia).

Repeat-flowering roses are pruned mainly in late winter to early spring, while once-flowering old shrub roses are pruned after flowering (rhs.org.uk). Dead, damaged, weak, and crossing wood is removed to open the shrub and improve air circulation. Once-flowering historical and botanical roses are pruned rather after flowering, because they often bloom on older wood. Climbing roses need not only pruning but also training of the shoots — they do not twine by themselves like grapevines or beans, so they must be tied to a support (ruze.cz).

Roses can be propagated by cuttings, layering, division, and seed (rhs.org.uk). Rose propagation also shows why the difference between a wild rose and a garden cultivar is so important. Wild species can be propagated from seed, although the seeds often require stratification and the offspring may not be completely uniform. Cultivars, however, are most often maintained vegetatively — by cuttings, layering, division, or budding onto a rootstock. If propagated by seed, the traits of a particular cultivar could split into new combinations. Budding and grafting are therefore ways to preserve a particular colour, fragrance, flower shape, growth habit, and health characteristics of a variety (ruze.cz).

Rose diseases are often the result of a combination of a susceptible variety, humid weather, and poor air circulation. Black spot is among the most feared rose diseases. Dark spots appear on the leaves, which then turn yellow and fall prematurely, weakening the shrub (ruze.cz). It is caused by Diplocarpon rosae and is the most serious outdoor disease of garden roses (rhs.org.uk). Powdery mildew appears as a whitish coating and causes deformation of young leaves and buds (ruze.cz). It is caused by Podosphaera pannosa (rhs.org.uk). Rust forms orange to rust-coloured spore pustules, while aphids damage mainly soft young shoots. The best protection is not only spraying, but prevention: airy planting, watering at the roots, removing infected leaves, choosing more resistant varieties, and keeping the plant in good condition (ruze.cz). Rose rosette disease is also extremely serious; it is a viral disease transmitted by the mite Phyllocoptes fructiphilus and often leads to the death of the plant. Among pests, aphids and other small sap-sucking insects are common in horticultural practice (rhs.org.uk).

Genetic studies of roses have produced reference genomes and identified regions of DNA responsible for important traits. Later, research focused on the diversity of wild roses and on how today’s cultivated roses originated. The most recent research already works with very precise genomes and with the genetic diversity of multiple roses as a whole. It shows that traits such as repeat flowering, petal number, colour, and fragrance depend not only on small changes in DNA, but also on larger genomic rearrangements. The rose is therefore no longer studied only as an ornamental plant, but also as a model in which botany, evolutionary biology, the study of fragrance and colour, and modern breeding intersect. Roses should be understood as the result of long evolution, domestication, and a very complex genetic history (Marinus J. M. Smulders et al.: In the Name of the Rose: A Roadmap for Rose Research in the Genome Era). Some roses are critically endangered, for example Rosa arabica. At the level of cultivated roses, genetic erosion of old garden roses and local collections is also a problem. Conserving diversity therefore means not only protecting wild populations, but also maintaining ex situ collections in gene banks and botanical gardens (Hristina Nunes, Maria Graca Miguel).

Roses are exceptional and at the same time extremely complex plants. They are wild shrubs of the Northern Hemisphere, cultivated plants, symbols of love and power, sources of fragrance and rose hips, demanding garden woody plants, and modern genetic models. In their flowers, aesthetics meets breeding; in their prickles, plant defence; in their rose hips, ecological value; and in their genome, a long history of hybridization, polyploidy, and domestication. This is why roses belong not only in flower beds and bouquets, but also in botany, evolutionary biology, horticulture, and cultural history.

Medzi najvýznamnejšie rôzne druhy orchideí a teplomilného hmyzu (ibot.sav.sk).

Sandberg is part of Devínska Kobyla. Many residents of frequently visit Sandberg. From Devínska Nová Ves, it is just a short trip away.

Sandberg is a Late Tertiary paleontological site of European significance. It was uncovered by a sand quarry. It consists of remnants of the Tertiary sea, which once covered the Vienna Basin. On Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous limestones, which are 160 – 180 million years old, sands with layers of gravel sands, sandstones, and breccias were deposited 14 – 16 million years ago when the sea significantly rose. The sand wall contains visible horizontal layers of more resistant sandstone and lithothamnion limestone. On the slopes and at the base, large boulders of sandstone and lithothamnion limestone remain, left behind after the last chamber explosion.

Around 300 fossilized species have been discovered here, including gastropods, bivalves, sea urchins, sponges, foraminifera, and larger marine and terrestrial animals. The most famous finds include shark teeth, bony fish, a whale vertebra, remains of turtles, monkeys, seals, woolly rhinoceroses, cave bears, and birds. The current flora includes several endangered and protected psammophilous species, such as Peucedanum arenarium, Minuartia glaucina, and Gypsophila paniculata (Information board). The oldest geological layers here are over 100 million years old. During the Tertiary period, Sandberg was alternately a sea bottom, a reef, or part of a coastal island system (devinskakobyla.sk). Sandberg is located on the western slopes of Devínska Kobyla and is part of the Devínska Kobyla National Nature Reserve (slovakia.travel).

Sand was once mined here and transported via an overhead cableway to a port on the Morava River. During the Tertiary period, 14 – 16 million years ago, a sea covered this area (panorama.sk). As the name suggests, Sandberg is composed of sands, sandstones, lithothamnion, lumachelle, and sandy limestones, as well as breccias and sandy clays. Geologically, these rocks have been deposited for only a short time, so they are only slightly consolidated. This is one of the reasons why Sandberg is a world-famous site for Neogene fossils. More than 300 fossilized species have been found here, including bivalves, worms, sponges, oysters, gastropods, sea urchins, bryozoans, foraminifera, sharks, seals, and various fish. A vertebra of the whale Mesocetus hungaricus was even discovered here.

Sandberg was once the seabed of a 60-meter-deep ocean, as well as a beach, a reef, and dry land. Washed-down remains of organisms related to modern rhinos, antelopes, canines, mastodons, and deinotheriums were mainly deposited here from northern slopes. Significant discoveries include fragments of the primates Pliopithecus antiguus and Sivapithecus darwini, considered ancestors of modern Indian gibbons. Teeth of Dryopithecus were also found here, which is classified as a precursor of modern great apes (devinska.sk). Marine organisms fossilized here date back 14 – 16 million years (sazp.sk). A Tertiary whale vertebra was discovered here by children of Albín Brunovský (Vodička). An astonishing find was the nearly complete shell of a turtle (panorama.sk). Marine sediments formed sandstone layers, which are now exposed as yellow rock faces of the former sandstone quarry (slovakia.travel).

Due to its warm and dry conditions, Sandberg is home to many rare plant and animal species. The most notable include various orchids and thermophilic insects (ibot.sav.sk). Free grazing is currently taking place on Sandberg, with the advantage that animals choose their food themselves, preventing overgrazing and creating a diverse landscape. Such extensive grazing is essential for the restoration and maintenance of biodiversity. It suppresses tree overgrowth, allowing the return of forest-steppe ecosystems and rare plant and animal species. Animals also naturally disperse plant seeds, supporting specialized species adapted to these conditions. The disturbance of the soil surface helps rare plant species germinate and creates favorable conditions for insects. The process is monitored zoologically and botanically to assess the impact of grazing on selected species (Information board).

Sandberg a Devínska Kobyla része.

Dryopithecus fogai is előkerültek, amelyeket a mai emberszabású majmok elődeinek tekintenek (devinska.sk). A fosszilizált tengeri élőlények itt 14 – 16 millió évvel ezelőtt éltek (sazp.sk).

Rastliny

Hits: 26564

Kvety pridávajú farbu, textúru a život, ich krása je zdrojom radosti a potešenia, a ich prítomnosť oživuje priestor a dodáva mu charakter.

Plants represent an extraordinary world that forms the foundation of our planet’s biodiversity. This diversity plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. Natural plants exhibit a diverse morphology. Roots serve to anchor the plant in the soil and acquire nutrients. Stems support the plant and facilitate the transport of water and nutrients. Leaves are the primary organs of photosynthesis, where solar energy transforms into chemical energy. Flowers are the reproductive organs, while fruits contain seeds essential for the plant’s life cycle.

Plants undergo complex physiological processes that enable them to survive and thrive. Photosynthesis is a key process where plants utilize solar energy and carbon dioxide to produce organic matter, releasing oxygen into the atmosphere. Respiration, transpiration, and water conduction are other vital physiological processes ensuring the life and functionality of plants. Plants are fundamental building blocks of ecosystems, serving as the primary producers, aside from a minimal number of chemotrophic organisms. They provide habitat and sustenance for diverse animal species.

Additionally, plants possess the ability to regenerate soil and purify water from unwanted substances and toxins. They are an integral part of human civilization, offering us food in the form of fruits, vegetables, grains, and other crops. Many plants exhibit medicinal properties, contributing to traditional and modern medicine. Furthermore, plants hold cultural and aesthetic values expressed through gardens, art, and symbols.

With increasing human activity and climate changes, natural plants are often endangered. Biodiversity loss, invasive species, and deforestation pose significant threats. Hence, it is crucial to implement protective measures, including preserving natural habitats, maintaining genetic diversity, and adopting sustainable soil management practices. The intricate relationship between humans and natural plants underscores the importance of conserving and sustainably utilizing this rich biological diversity.

Plantae mirabilem mundum constituunt, qui biodiversitatis fundamentum in nostro planeta collocat. Haec varietas partes fundamentales agit in conservatione aequilibri oecologici.

Cultivated flowers have a long history intertwined with human culture and are an integral part of our gardens and homes. Their beauty, fragrance, and symbolic significance make them more than just decorations – they are symbols of love, joy, peace, and many other emotions. Flowers add color, texture, and life; their beauty is a source of joy and pleasure, and their presence enlivens the space and gives it character. Many types of flowers have symbolic meanings and are associated with various emotions and events. Roses are symbols of love and romance, lilies represent purity and innocence, and sunflowers symbolize friendship and joyful thoughts. Flowers are often used to express condolences, celebrations, or gratitude. Flowers also have therapeutic effects. The presence of flowers in households or workspaces can improve mood, reduce stress and anxiety, and enhance creativity and productivity. Gardening or caring for flowers can also be a relaxing and therapeutic activity.
