Konferencia sa v roku 2026 bude konať v reprezentatívnych priestoroch Zrkadlovej siene Primaciálneho paláca v Bratislave v dňoch 23. – 24. marca 2026. Podujatie je tematicky zamerané na dva hlavné okruhy: a harmonizáciu priestorových údajov. Obe dnes predstavujú kľúčové pre nás všetkých.

Klimatické zmeny sú fenoménom, ktorý čoraz výraznejšie ovplyvňuje fungovanie aj miest. Hoci sa ich dopady často zvýrazňujú vo vyšších nadmorských výškach, väčšina žije v nížinných urbanizovaných oblastiach, kde sa prejavujú najmä vo forme tepelných ostrovov, extrémov počasia či tlaku na mestskú infraštruktúru. Aj preto je mimoriadne cenný pohľad klimatológa Pavla Faška, ktorý do programu prináša syntézu časových a priestorových zmien meteorologických prvkov na Slovensku. Klimatický blok dopĺňajú zamerané na zraniteľnosť krajiny, ekosystémové mestskej zelene, či snehovej pokrývky pomocou nástrojov GIS.

Druhý tematický blok reflektuje rastúci význam interoperability dát, dopravných modelov a konceptu . Príspevky sa venujú praktickým aspektom harmonizácie priestorových údajov, zdieľaniu priestorových informácií medzi organizáciami, využívaniu dát zo senzorických sietí pre či zvyšovaniu bezbariérovosti verejného priestoru. Osobitná je venovaná aj poloautomatickému modelovaniu dostupnosti cestnej siete a moderným prístupom k správe technickej a zelenej infraštruktúry miest.

Významným spoločným menovateľom príspevkov je ich výrazný a . Analýzy a zasahujú aj , prípadne celé územie Slovenska či územie Českej republiky. Práve geoinformačné umožňujú prepájať poznatky naprieč rôznymi mierkami územia a odhaľovať , ktoré by inak zostali skryté. Zároveň sa potvrdzuje, že najmä klimatické zmeny nepoznajú ľudské . Ich aj majú prirodzene cezhraničný a nadregionálny charakter, čo kladie zvýšené nároky na harmonizáciu dát, interoperabilitu systémov a koordinovaný prístup k správe územia.

Plagat

Program je takmer kompletný, avšak organizátor si vyhradzuje právo na jeho zmeny. Poradie príspevkov bude upresnené. Počas dvoch konferenčných dní odznejú nasledovné príspevky. Po každej prezentácii bude nasledovať krátka diskusia.

The GIS Slovakia Conference 2026 will take place in the representative premises of the Mirror Hall of the Primate’s Palace in Bratislava on 23–24 2026. The event is thematically focused on two main areas: climate change and spatial data harmonization. Both areas currently represent key challenges for all of us.

Climate change is a phenomenon that is increasingly affecting the functioning of both the landscape and cities. Although its impacts are often emphasized at higher altitudes, the majority of the population lives in lowland urbanized areas, where manifests mainly through urban heat islands, weather events, and pressure on urban infrastructure. For this reason, the perspective of climatologist , who brings to the program a synthesis of temporal and spatial changes in selected meteorological variables in Slovakia, is particularly valuable. The climate-focused block is complemented by presentations addressing landscape vulnerability, ecosystem services of urban greenery, climate risks, and snow cover modelling using GIS tools.

The second thematic block reflects the growing importance of data interoperability, transport models, and the Digital Twin concept. Contributions focus on practical aspects of spatial data harmonization, sharing spatial information among organizations, using sensor network data for urban planning, and improving barrier-free accessibility of public spaces. Special attention is also given to semi-automated modelling of road network accessibility and modern approaches to managing technical and green urban infrastructure.

A significant common denominator of the contributions is their strong territorial dimension and cross-regional reach. Analyses and case studies extend to mountainous areas as well as to the entire territories of Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Geoinformation technologies make it possible to connect knowledge across multiple spatial scales and reveal spatial relationships that would otherwise remain hidden. At the same time, it is evident that climate change in particular does not respect human borders. Its impacts and adaptation measures naturally have a cross-border and supra-regional character, which places increased demands on data harmonization, system interoperability, and coordinated territorial governance.

The conference program is nearly complete; however, the organizer reserves the right to make changes. The order of presentations will be specified later. The following contributions will be presented over the two conference days, each followed by a short discussion.

Konferencia sa uskutočnila v dňoch 19. – 20. marca 2024 a opäť ukázala, že komunita má čo povedať. bola výborná a účastníkov pozitívne. V priebehu dvoch dní zazneli inšpiratívne , ktoré pokryli široké spektrum tém – od praktických aplikácií, cez a , až po a . Program bol pestrý. Niektoré tematicky nadväzovali, iné priniesli pohľad z úplne iného uhla. Objavila sa urbanisticko-prognostická reflexia, ekonomický aspekt s údajmi, ako aj manažérsky pohľad v území. Technologicky veľmi silný bol vstup z Prahy, ktorý zaujal svojou odbornosťou aj precíznou realizáciou.

Téma otvorených dát bola prítomná v rôznych formách a prepojeniach, čo len potvrdzuje, že ide o oblasť, ktorá v našich podmienkach dozrieva a zároveň otvára nové . Zvlášť zaujímavým výstupom boli tri environmentálne ladené príspevky, ktoré odštartovali veľmi konštruktívny dialóg. Aj vďaka nim sa črtá potenciál pre bližšiu spoluprácu medzi mestom a Prírodovedeckou fakultou UK. Zastúpené boli príspevky z rôznych lokalít – Bratislava, , Brno, , , , ako aj ďalšie Slovenskej a Českej republiky. boli živé a často pokračovali aj mimo hlavného programu – čo je vždy dobré znamenie. Platformu Zoom si zvolili zámerne a opäť sa ukázala ako spoľahlivé riešenie pre online podujatie tohto typu. Do budúcna však veríme, že sa nám podarí vytvoriť aj pre osobné stretnutie.

Príspevky

The conference took place on 19–20, 2024, and once again demonstrated that the GIS community has much to say. The atmosphere was excellent and participant feedback was very positive. Over the course of two days, inspiring presentations were delivered, covering a broad range of topics — from practical applications and urbanism to management, , and technological innovation. The program was diverse: some presentations followed thematically, while others offered perspectives from entirely different angles. Urban–prognostic reflections emerged, alongside the economic aspects of working with data and managerial perspectives on spatial decision-making. From a technological standpoint, a particularly strong contribution came from , impressing the audience with both its expertise and precise implementation.

The topic of open data appeared in various forms and connections, further confirming that this field is maturing under local conditions while simultaneously opening up new opportunities. Especially noteworthy were three environmentally focused presentations, which initiated a very constructive dialogue. Thanks in part to these contributions, there is emerging potential for closer cooperation between the of Bratislava and the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University. Contributions represented a wide range of locations — Bratislava, Prague, , Ostrava, Jihlava, the Region, as well as other regions of and the Republic. Discussions were lively and often continued beyond the main program, which is always a good sign. The Zoom platform was deliberately chosen and once again proved to be a reliable solution for an online event of this type. Looking ahead, however, we hope to create space for in-person meetings as well.

V roku 2023 som usporiadal prvý ročník , ktorý sa konal formou . Tu je z neho výstup.

Konferencia, ktorá prebehla v dňoch 21. až 23. marca 2023, privítala viac než 150 účastníkov. V priebehu troch dní zaznamenali kumulovaný sledovania takmer 67 dní, pričom v najsilnejšom okamihu sa online stretlo až 72 ľudí naraz. Medzi prítomnými boli z rôznych úrovní , štátnych inštitúcií, akademickej sféry aj súkromného sektora. Menovite: Magistrát hlavného mesta SR Bratislavy, (), , a Ružinov, Bratislavský a Košický samosprávny kraj, SR, mestá Trenčín a , , a viaceré univerzity – SPU v Nitre, UK Bratislava, , Brno, Univerzita . Zastúpenie mal aj výskum a : Centrum dopravního výzkumu Brno, , ArcGEO, , , , OEL-Solutions, GIS Services . Celkovo bolo prezentovaných 27 príspevkov, ktoré sa snažili sprostredkovať užitočné a praktické o GIS technológiách aj pre neodbornú .

Zámerom bolo nielen prezentovať , ale aj priblížiť GIS ako nástroj, ktorý prepája ľudí naprieč sektormí – od samosprávy cez akademickú pôdu až po komerčnú sféru. Ukázať, že práve táto prináša hodnotu. Nejde o to, aký používame, ale aký postoj zaujímame – ku spolupráci, k otvorenosti a k spoločnému územnému vnímaniu.

Ako niekto, kto venuje mestu Bratislava už takmer 25 rokov, mi záleží tom, aby sa GIS rozvíjal aj v tomto kontexte. Preto bolo prirodzené, že viaceré boli tematicky späté s Bratislavou – či už zo strany mojich kolegov, alebo spolupracujúcich odborníkov z blízkych oblastí. Územné , ktoré riešime – nielen v Bratislave, ale aj v Košiciach, Ostrave či Olomouci – majú často spoločný základ. Týkajú sa kompetencií, regiónov, potrieb aj výziev. V mnohých prípadoch presahujú úroveň mesta a smerujú ku celoslovenským, ba až globálnym otázkam – ako je klimatická zmena či adaptácia mestského prostredia.

Ďakujem veľmi pekne všetkým prezentujúcim za ich čas, energiu a ochotu zdieľať. Aj vďaka nim sa darí formovať GIS komunitu, ktorá nie je len technologická, ale najmä ľudská a hodnotová.

In 2023, I organized the edition of the GIS Slovakia event, held as an online conference. Below is its outcome.

The conference, which took place from 21 to 23, 2023, welcomed more than 150 participants. Over the three days, we recorded a cumulative viewing time of almost 67 days, with a peak of up to 72 people connected online at the same time. Participants included representatives from various levels of local government, state institutions, academia, and the private sector. Specifically: the City Hall of the Capital City of Bratislava, the Metropolitan Institute of Bratislava (MIB), Marianum, the city districts of Staré Mesto and Ružinov, the Bratislava and Košice Self-Governing Regions, the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic, the cities of Trenčín and Košice, MAPPA Ostrava, and several universities — the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra, Comenius University in Bratislava, University in Prešov, Masaryk University in Brno, and Palacký University in Olomouc. Research and the private sector were also represented: the Transport Research Centre Brno, Telekom, ArcGEO, Eurosense, YMS, Asseco Central , OEL-Solutions, and . In total, 27 presentations were delivered, aiming to provide useful and practical information about GIS technologies even for a non-expert audience.

The goal was not only to present the results of work, but also to introduce GIS as a tool that connects people across sectors — from local government and academia to the commercial sphere. To show that this diversity itself creates value. It is not about which software we use, but about the attitude we adopt — toward cooperation, openness, and a shared spatial perspective.

As someone who has been devoted to the city of Bratislava for nearly 25 years, it matters to me that GIS continues to develop in this broader context. It was therefore natural that many of the presentations were thematically linked to Bratislava — whether from my colleagues or from collaborating experts in related fields. The spatial issues we deal with — not only in Bratislava, but also in Košice, Ostrava, or Olomouc — often share a common foundation. They concern competencies, regions, needs, and challenges. In many cases, they go beyond the level of individual cities and move toward national and even global questions — such as climate change and urban adaptation.

I would like to sincerely thank all the presenters for their time, energy, and willingness to share. Thanks to them, a GIS community is being formed that is not only technological, but above all human and value-driven.

Shape (šejp) vs. geodatabáza

Základné rozdiely a limity formátov

Geodatabáza má širšie funkčné možnosti ako šejp. Dovolí viac znakov – viac ako 10 znakov pre popis atribútov, aj pre dĺžku – v porovnaní s v . Ak robíte exporty zo , resp. Enterprise, odporúčam nepoužiť SHP aj kvôli tomu, že vám názvy stĺpcov oreže. SHP predstavuje jednu vrstvu, geodatabáza môže mať neobmedzené množstvo vrstiev. názvu atribútu v prípade šejpu je maximálne 10 znakov. Do SHP žiadnu prílohu nepridáte.

, a číselníky

Geodatabáza pracuje s doménami a subtypmi. Je to niečo ako číselník, prepojovacia tabuľka, resp. substitúcia. Napríklad v tabuľke máte označené kódmi 1 až 1000 alebo A až N. K nim máte tabuľku, v ktorej je definované, čo ktoré znamenajú. Typické príklady sú pôdne typy, typy druhov pozemku katastra, kategorizácia platieb, ekonomická klasifikácia a podobne. Doménu vytvoríte buď ručne, alebo importom z či .

dát a výkon

Vykresľovanie je rýchlejšie aj z dôvodu, že je kapacitne úspornejšia. DBF alokuje pevné miesto pre každý záznam podľa definície polí bez ohľadu použité . Ak máte milión záznamov, v ktorých je len 100 buniek nejakého atribútu vyplnených, na DBF to nemá žiaden vplyv. V prípade GDB to má zásadný vplyv. Pri rovnakom obsahu dát GDB zaberie podstatne menej priestoru na úložisku ako SHP.

GDB ako kontajner dát

Svojím spôsobom je GDB niečo ako kontajner, pretože prijme rôzne dát – , , a podobne. „Konzumuje“ rôzne vrstvy, zatiaľ čo SHP vždy iba jednu. Kontajner je termín používaný aj pri multimédiách, napríklad MPEG alebo MKV. Ide o obalovú technológiu, ktorá prijíma rôzne typy dát – pri videu napríklad H.264, H.265, MP4, AVI. Podobne pri rastroch ide o *.TIFF kontajner, kde môže byť vnútorná kompresia ako , LZW, TIFF RLE, CCITT, PNG a podobne.

Geometrické a editácia

GDB si sama automaticky pri exporte tvorí ku geometrii a udržiava ich aj pri editácii. Pri SHP ich treba pri zmene údajov dopočítavať ručne.

Praktické nevýhody GDB

Nevýhoda GDB je v tom, že jej je prakticky nečitateľný bez softvéru. Zo súborov v správcovi súborov nie je zrejmé, čo je vo . V prípade SHP si viete šejp pomenovať ako chcete a vidíte ho priamo na disku. Preto sa GDB horšie kopíruje a synchronizuje. GDB vie byť lockovaná – zamknutá, čo je niekedy výhoda, inokedy problém. Ak nejde niečo zmazať, treba najprv skontrolovať, či nie je niečo editované, a potom použiť Delete v geoprocessingu. Na synchronizáciu GDB je vhodné použiť , prípadne jednoduché Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V, ale najspoľahlivejšie sú nástroje v geoprocessingu v Analyze.

na server

Ak sa publikuje SHP na alebo AGOL, technológia si ho natívne pretransformuje do GDB – mierne odlišnej, než by vytvorilo . SHP je z princípu otvorený formát, prístupný strojovému spracovaniu, GDB nie. SHP sa postupne stáva výmenným formátom medzi ne-GIS a GIS svetom, medzi softvérmi, ktoré si inak súborovo neporozumejú. Používa ho napríklad PTV Vision (dopravné ), , čiastočne Autodesk, Hexagon a ďalšie .

a prílohy

Niektoré služby na serverovej technológii je možné vytvoriť iba z GDB, napríklad mozaiky z rastrov. GDB umožňuje pridávať prílohy aj z ne-GIS sveta, typicky vo formáte JPEG. To je veľmi dôležité pre laikov a manažérov a zároveň vizuálne veľmi efektné.

Ako v prípade SHP, aj pri GDB odporúčam údaje otagovať a popísať metadátami. Ak GDB obsahuje viac vrstiev alebo súčastí, ideálne je popísať každú samostatne. Oceníte to najmä pri publikovaní na server, pretože ArcGIS Enterprise a AGOL všetky tieto automaticky preberajú.

Basic differences and format limitations

A geodatabase has broader functional capabilities than a . allows longer field names – more than 10 characters for attribute descriptions, as well as greater field length – compared to the DBF used in SHP. If you are exporting data from AGOL or ArcGIS Enterprise services, I recommend not using SHP also because column names get truncated. SHP represents a single layer, while a geodatabase can contain an unlimited number of layers. The maximum length of an attribute name in a shapefile is 10 characters. You cannot add any attachments to SHP.

Domains, subtypes, and lookup tables

A geodatabase works with domains and subtypes. This is similar to a lookup table, a linking table, or a substitution mechanism. For example, in a table you may have records coded from 1 to 1000 or from A to N. You then have another table defining what each code means. Typical examples include soil types, cadastral land use types, payment categories, economic classifications, and similar datasets. Domains can be created manually or imported from XLS or CSV.

Data size and

Rendering from a GDB is faster, also because it is more storage-efficient. DBF allocates a fixed amount of space for each record based on the field definitions, regardless of how many values are actually used. If you have one million records in which only 100 cells of a certain attribute are filled, this has no impact on the size of the DBF file. In the case of GDB, however, this has a significant effect. With the same data content, a GDB occupies substantially less storage space than SHP.

GDB as a data container

In a way, GDB acts as a container, because it can hold different types of data – rasters, TINs, mosaics, and similar datasets. It “consumes” multiple layers, whereas SHP always contains only one. The term container is also used in multimedia, for example MPEG or MKV. It refers to a wrapper technology that holds different kinds of data – in , for example, H.264, H.265, MP4, AVI. Similarly for rasters, you may have a *.TIFF container, but internally the data can be compressed using JPEG, LZW, TIFF RLE, CCITT, PNG, and so on.

Geometric attributes and editing

When exporting to GDB, the geodatabase automatically creates geometry dimension attributes and maintains them during editing. In SHP, these must be recalculated manually after data changes.

Practical disadvantages of GDB

A disadvantage of GDB is that its contents are practically unreadable without GIS software. From the files in a file manager, it is not clear what is stored inside. With SHP, you can name the shapefile as you like and see it directly on disk. Therefore, GDB is harder to copy and synchronize. A GDB can be locked, which is sometimes an advantage and sometimes a problem. If something cannot be deleted, you should check whether it is being edited, and then try using Delete in . For synchronizing a GDB, it is advisable to use Catalog or simple Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V, but the most reliable tools are those in the Analyze geoprocessing toolbox.

Publishing to a server

When a SHP is published to ArcGIS Enterprise or AGOL, the technology internally converts it into a native GDB – slightly different from what ArcGIS Pro would create. SHP is by nature an open format, suitable for machine processing, whereas GDB is not. SHP is gradually becoming a transfer format between non-GIS and GIS environments, and between software systems that otherwise do not fully understand each other at the file level. It is used, for example, by PTV Vision ( modeling), Kokeš, partly Autodesk, Hexagon, and other systems.

Server services and attachments

Some server-based services can be created only from GDB, for example raster mosaics. GDB also allows adding attachments from the non-GIS world, typically photographs in JPEG format. This is very important for non-technical users and managers, and at the same time very visually effective.

Metadata and documentation

As with SHP, I also recommend tagging and documenting GDB data using metadata. If a GDB contains multiple layers or components, ideally each one should be described separately. This is especially valuable when publishing to a server, because ArcGIS Enterprise and AGOL automatically inherit all this information.
