Hana Bobáľová – Hodnotenie ekologických benefitov stromov na vybraných lokalitách mestskej časti Bratislava – Staré Mesto

Hits: 120

Tento príspevok zaznel na konferencii GIS Slovakia 2026.

Mestské prostredie dnes čelí viacerým závažným výzvam, ktoré priamo súvisia s klimatickou zmenou a urbanizáciou. Medzi najvýznamnejšie prehrievanie miest – mestské ostrovy tepla, extrémne zrážky a zrýchlený odtok , znečistenie ovzdušia či znižovanie kvality verejného priestoru.

Išlo napríklad o určovanie ukazovateľov miery presychania koruny a chýbajúcej časti koruny.

Bobalova202602

Medzi dominantné druhy patrili sofora japonská (Styphnolobium japonicum), javor mliečny (Acer platanoides), javor horský (Acer pseudoplatanus), borovica čierna (Pinus nigra) a brestovec západný (Celtis occidentalis). Stromy prispievajú k znižovaniu koncentrácií O₃ (ozónu), SO₂, NO₂, CO.

Prezentácia zároveň naznačuje ďalšie smerovanie výskumu, ktoré zahŕňa identifikáciu korún stromov pomocou leteckého laserového skenovania, tvorbu modelu výšky korunového zápoja, segmentáciu korún a výpočet metrík stromovej vegetácie.

Urban environments currently face several serious challenges directly associated with climate change and urbanisation. The most significant include the overheating of cities and the formation of urban heat islands, extreme precipitation and accelerated water runoff, air pollution, and the declining quality of public spaces. In this context, urban trees are becoming essential components of green infrastructure. Their contribution is not merely aesthetic but encompasses a complex range of ecological, climatic, and social functions. Trees also represent one of the most effective local climate-change adaptation measures. They contribute to cooling the environment through shading and evapotranspiration, improve air quality, support carbon sequestration and storage, intercept rainwater, and regulate runoff. In addition, they support biodiversity, recreation, physical activity, mental health, and social cohesion. For the purposes of municipal practice, these benefits need to be expressed quantitatively. Numerical results provide a much stronger basis for justifying investments in green infrastructure, optimising tree-planting plans, and comparing alternative solutions.

The i-Tree Eco tool, developed by the USDA Forest Service and used in numerous countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden, the Netherlands, Poland, and Hungary, was applied to assess the ecological benefits. The model makes it possible to analyse air quality, carbon balances, energy savings, and the ecological functions of trees. The analysis was conducted for the Bratislava–Old Town borough. For the purposes of the assessment, it was necessary to standardise taxonomic names, define land-use parameters, and add characteristics describing the health of individual trees. These included indicators such as the degree of crown dieback and the proportion of missing crown. Air-pollution data and meteorological data were also included in the assessment. Calculations of carbon storage took into account leaf area, leaf biomass, and the total dry biomass of each tree, with the amount of stored carbon calculated as a proportion of the biomass. Gross carbon sequestration, meaning the capture and long-term storage of carbon, was subsequently modelled using the expected growth of the tree over time. This approach gives the results greater analytical value because it evaluates not only the current condition but also the ability of trees to contribute to the future climatic stability of the city.

The presentation also demonstrates the relationship between tree vegetation and the energy balance of buildings. The distance and azimuth of trees in relation to the nearest buildings were assessed, while the building data were obtained from OpenStreetMap. This approach confirms that the ecological benefits of trees cannot be understood solely in terms of their role as natural elements within a city. Trees are also factors affecting energy consumption, thermal comfort, and the adaptation of urbanised environments to changing climatic conditions. The dominant species included the Japanese pagoda tree (Styphnolobium japonicum), Norway maple (Acer platanoides), sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus), Austrian pine (Pinus nigra), and common hackberry (Celtis occidentalis). In terms of carbon sequestration, fast-growing species with large amounts of biomass, such as black locust, honey locust, horse chestnut, birch, linden, and pine, proved to be the most effective. These species also demonstrated high levels of oxygen production. Trees contribute to reducing concentrations of O₃, or ozone, SO₂, NO₂, and CO. Coniferous trees play a particularly important role in removing air pollution because they remain effective throughout the year. In terms of water retention and runoff regulation, Austrian pine proved especially important, together with deciduous trees with large leaf areas that support evapotranspiration.

The results indicate that trees stabilise the urban climate, reduce ambient temperatures, and mitigate the effects of urban heat islands. At the same time, they regulate the urban water regime, intercept precipitation, and slow water runoff. They also make a significant contribution to improving air quality by capturing pollutants and helping to reduce greenhouse-gas concentrations. The research also confirms their social and health-related importance. Trees reduce stress, encourage physical activity, and create more favourable environments for social interaction. The entire approach is closely connected with GIS technologies, which function not merely as tools for map visualisation but as analytical platforms for spatial assessment, scenario modelling, and decision support. The Japanese pagoda tree achieved the highest economic value expressed in terms of replacement value. The results clearly demonstrate that urban trees have both measurable climatic effects and quantifiable economic value. The quality of the results directly depends on the quality of the input data. The analysis confirms that urban greenery stores thousands of tonnes of CO₂ equivalent, improves air quality, regulates the water regime, reduces environmental temperatures, and generates tangible ecological and economic benefits.

The presentation also outlines possible directions for further research, including the identification of tree crowns using airborne laser scanning, the creation of canopy height models, crown segmentation, and the calculation of tree-vegetation metrics. It also introduces analyses of the shading potential of trees using lidar data. This means that assessments of ecological benefits may in the future progress beyond conventional tree-inventory databases towards semi-automated mapping and the modelling of locations where detailed urban-tree inventories are not yet available. This is precisely where the potential of GIS and Earth observation becomes particularly evident, as they provide essential tools for the modern management of urban greenery.

Radovan Hilbert – Adaptačné opatrenia, zvýšenie odolnosti na negatívne aspekty klimatickej zmeny

Hits: 122

Tento príspevok zaznel na konferencii GIS Slovakia 2026.

Klimatická zmena predstavuje jeden z najzásadnejších environmentálnych a spoločenských problémov súčasnosti. Rastúca frekvencia extrémnych javov, zmeny v distribúcii zrážok či teplotné extrémy si vyžadujú nielen globálne riešenia, ale najmä lokálne adaptačné opatrenia založené na dátach. Dôležité je efektívne spracovanie klimatických dát priamo v lokálnom kontexte, čo umožňuje rýchlejšie, presnejšie a cielenejšie rozhodovanie. Klimatická zmena nie je izolovaný jav. Ide o komplexný systém prepojených procesov, ktoré ovplyvňujú biodiverzitu, stabilitu ekosystémov, hospodárske aktivity, kvalitu života obyvateľstva. Základným predpokladom efektívnej adaptácie je práca s dátami.

hilbert202601

Projekt FOCAL (Horizon Europe) zdôrazňuje potrebu lokálneho spracovania klimatických dát, využitie priestorových analýz, integráciu rôznych dátových zdrojov – meteorologických, environmentálnych a infraštruktúrnych. Digitálne riešenia – typický príklad prepojenia GIS, rozhodovania, analýzy veľmi veľkých dát: detekcia a monitorovanie javov v priestore a čase, automatizované spracovanie dát, univerzálne využitie naprieč sektormi, optimalizácia lokalít, hodnotenie variantných riešení, riadenie zásahov v území. Do projektu je zapojených viacero partnerov: Fraunhofer IGD (Koordinatátor), Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, plan4all, Lesprojekt-Sluzby, Západočeská univerzita v Plzni (ZČU), CESNET, Národní lesnický institut (NLI), České vysoké učení technické v Praze, MNLT Innovations PC, European Innovation Marketplace, Open Geospatial Consortium, AICFD – International Association for Disruptive and Frontier Science, YMS, Stadt Konstanz.

hilbert202602

Prezentácia vysvetľuje klimatické modelovanie, v tomto prípade princíp dynamického downscalingu pomocou regionálnych klimatických modelov – RCM. Globálne cirkulačné – GCM pracujú v hrubšom priestorovom rozlíšení, približne v rozsahu stoviek až desiatok kilometrov, a opisujú veľkopriestorové procesy v atmosfére a klimatickom systéme.

Prezentácia uvádza napríklad dĺžku a frekvenciu horúcich periód, počet vlhkých a suchých dní, dĺžku suchých periód, počet ľadových dní, letných dní, horúcich dní, veľmi horúcich dní či extrémne horúcich dní.

hilbert202605

Climate change represents one of the most fundamental environmental and societal challenges of our time. The increasing frequency of extreme events, changes in precipitation distribution, and temperature extremes require not only global solutions, but above all local adaptation measures based on data. Efficient processing of climate data directly within the local context is essential, as it enables faster, more accurate, and more targeted decision-making. Climate change is not an isolated phenomenon. It is a complex system of interconnected processes that affect biodiversity, ecosystem stability, economic activities, and the quality of life of the population. Working with data is a basic prerequisite for effective adaptation.

The FOCAL project, funded under Horizon Europe, highlights the need for local climate data processing, the use of spatial analysis, and the integration of various data sources, including meteorological, environmental, and infrastructure data. A key objective is the shift from global models towards local decision-support tools. Digital solutions represent a typical example of the interconnection between GIS, decision-making, and the analysis of very large datasets: the detection and monitoring of phenomena across space and time, automated data processing, universal use across sectors, location optimisation, the evaluation of alternative solutions, and the management of interventions within a territory. The project involves several partners: Fraunhofer IGD as coordinator, the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, plan4all, Lesprojekt-Sluzby, the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, CESNET, the National Forest Institute, the Czech Technical University in Prague, MNLT Innovations PC, the European Innovation Marketplace, the Open Geospatial Consortium, AICFD – International Association for Disruptive and Frontier Science, YMS, and the City of Konstanz.

Another important aspect is the internal functioning of organisations: the unification of agendas, improved process awareness, faster communication, and the digitalisation of services. Modern territorial management requires targeted measures, the analysis of alternatives, and the optimisation of interventions. Without data, this leads to intuitive decision-making; with data, it leads to optimised decision-making. Adaptation measures cannot be understood merely as a set of general recommendations, but rather as the outcome of an interconnected data and analytical ecosystem. In this context, the FOCAL project – Efficient Exploration of Climate Data Locally – is particularly important, as it is built on several interconnected layers. These include the FOCAL platform, designed to support climate modelling and Earth system tasks; specialised modules for assessing mitigation, the reduction of adverse impacts and risks, and adaptation at regional and local levels; web applications intended for assessment and local analysis; and a long-term cooperation cluster connecting Earth system research, Earth observation data providers, data science, and HPC infrastructure for computationally demanding tasks.

The presentation explains climate modelling, in this case the principle of dynamic downscaling using regional climate models, or RCMs. Global circulation models, or GCMs, operate at a coarser spatial resolution, approximately ranging from hundreds to tens of kilometres, and describe large-scale processes in the atmosphere and the climate system. RCMs enable more detailed modelling over smaller areas, with spatial resolution reaching several kilometres. Relevant physical processes are modelled in three-dimensional space and with very short internal time steps, ranging from minutes to seconds. This increase in resolution is crucial for the local assessment of climate change impacts. Future climate development is represented through scenarios, initially by the older RCP scenarios – representative concentration pathways for greenhouse gases – and subsequently through the SSP framework – shared socioeconomic pathways used in more recent assessments by the IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Importantly, future development is not presented as a single trajectory, but as a set of possible development pathways with different emission levels and different temperature responses. This is followed by the principle of ensemble simulations, meaning sets of simulations that combine uncertainty in emission scenarios, uncertainty in climate models, and the internal variability of the climate system. Such an approach makes it possible to produce more robust climate information for decision-making. In this context, the presentation also mentions the NUKLEUS project, which applies downscaling to a resolution of up to 3 kilometres, bringing climate data to a level that is far more suitable for regional and urban applications.

Another significant theme of the presentation is the integration of climate data with artificial intelligence methods. This involves a relatively specific technological framework. The presentation refers to autoencoders, neural networks, transformer models for image processing, physics-informed models, and image super-resolution methods. These approaches indicate a shift from conventional modelling towards hybrid systems that combine physical knowledge with data-driven learning. The presentation suggests that, in this context, AI should primarily support increases in spatial resolution, the processing of large volumes of data, prediction, and the more efficient extraction of information from heterogeneous sources.

The data and workflow component of the presentation is also highly specific. It works with climate data in the NetCDF format, which is a standard format for multidimensional scientific data. The basic input variables include maximum temperature, minimum temperature, mean temperature, precipitation, near-surface wind speed, and relative humidity. Climate indices are subsequently calculated from these variables. The presentation mentions, for example, the duration and frequency of hot spells, the number of wet and dry days, the duration of dry periods, and the number of frost days, summer days, hot days, very hot days, and extremely hot days. It also specifically mentions biometeorological indices such as the UTCI – Universal Thermal Climate Index – and PET – Physiological Equivalent Temperature – which connect physical climate variables with actual human thermal comfort.

The presentation demonstrates that the results are intended to become usable decision-support tools. It therefore includes an example of the FOCAL web application, in which users select data sources, an area of interest, climate indicators, temporal aggregation, and spatial aggregation. The example visualises maps, charts, tables, and time series, providing forms of output that are understandable and practically usable. The workflows themselves are particularly important, especially the Climate Change Workflow and the Urban Blue Spot Workflow. The first represents a general framework for processing climate change data, calculating indicators, and visualising changes over time and space. The second points towards specific urban problems, particularly locations vulnerable to water accumulation, the vulnerability of urbanised environments, and the practical use of data in urban planning. In this way, the presentation concludes as an example of the transition from a scientific model and a data workflow to a real web application supporting local adaptation decision-making.

Particularly sensitive areas include urban environments, agriculture, water management, and forest ecosystems. Urbanisation increases temperatures, accelerates water runoff, and increases territorial vulnerability. The solution lies in the integration of greenery and blue-green infrastructure. Adaptation measures include tree planting, green roofs, green walls, wetland restoration, retention basins, flood protection measures, the modification of watercourses, spatial planning, construction regulation, and municipal climate strategies. Without adaptation, damage increases, quality of life decreases, and economic costs rise.

Climate adaptation and climate change are both scientific and technological challenges requiring a substantial volume of research, projects, and international partnerships. The future must be addressed at both global and local levels. It requires precise analyses, models, and specific measures. The way in which we approach the management of landscapes, cities, and infrastructure is changing. For GIS professionals, this represents a fundamental transformation of their role from mapmakers into architects of decision-making.

GIS Slovakia 2026

Hits: 367

Konferencia GIS Slovakia sa konala v reprezentatívnych priestoroch Zrkadlovej siene Primaciálneho paláca v Bratislave v dňoch 23. – 24. marca 2026.

Druhý tematický okruh reflektuje rastúci význam interoperability dát, dopravných modelov a konceptu Digital Twin.

The GIS Slovakia conference was held in the representative premises of the Mirror Hall of the Primate’s Palace in Bratislava on March 23–24, 2026. The event focused on two main thematic areas: climate change and the harmonization of spatial data. Both areas currently represent key challenges for all of us.

Climate change is a phenomenon that is increasingly affecting the functioning of both landscapes and cities. Although its impacts are often more pronounced at higher altitudes, the majority of the population lives in lowland urbanized areas, where it manifests primarily through urban heat islands, extreme weather events, and pressure on urban infrastructure. For this reason, the contribution of climatologist Pavel Faško was particularly valuable, as he presented a synthesis of temporal and spatial changes in meteorological elements in Slovakia. The climate-focused session was further complemented by presentations addressing landscape vulnerability, ecosystem services of urban greenery, climate risks, and snow cover modeling using GIS tools.

The second thematic area reflects the growing importance of data interoperability, transport models, and the Digital Twin concept. Contributions focused on practical aspects of spatial data harmonization, sharing spatial information between organizations, the use of sensor network data for urban planning, and improving the accessibility of public spaces. Special attention was also given to semi-automated modeling of road network accessibility and modern approaches to managing technical and green urban infrastructure.

A significant common denominator of the contributions was their strong spatial dimension and supra-regional scope. Geoinformation technologies make it possible to connect knowledge across different spatial scales and reveal relationships that would otherwise remain hidden. At the same time, it is increasingly evident that climate change does not recognize human boundaries. Both its impacts and the necessary adaptation measures inherently require a cross-border and supra-regional approach, placing increased demands on data harmonization, system interoperability, and coordinated spatial management.

The event was organized by the Digitalization Section – Data Department of the Bratislava City Hall. Over the two conference days, a total of 16 presentations were delivered, five of which were prepared by my colleagues. Each presentation was followed by a short discussion.

I believe that the conference provided many valuable insights and sources of inspiration. It was an important opportunity not only for us as organizers but also for all participants. With the exception of one climatological presentation, all contributions were delivered by GIS professionals. One particular idea resonated strongly among attendees, speakers, and even within our own internal discussions. During the conference and after its conclusion, there was a recurring focus on the future.
