Hits: 298

Ruprechtov Mill is located in the Drahanská Highlands, between Vyškov and Blansko, near the Macocha Abyss, in the village of Ruprechtov. It was built in 1873 as a classic Dutch-style mill. From 1882 to 1884, the builder and owner of the mill, Cyril Wágner, installed a Halladay turbine after a windstorm damaged the mill, instead of the traditional wheel. Thanks to this, the mill ground up to twice as much grain. Ruprechtov Mill is designated as a national cultural monument and is listed on the UNESCO list (Blanka Sládková). The mill is a cultural monument. In October, it is open to the public on weekends. From October to April, guided tours take place, various exhibitions, social events, and smaller wedding ceremonies are held here. From May to September, it serves as accommodation (mlynruprechtov.cz).

In 2009, a representative of the international milling organization TMS confirmed that the Halladay turbine drive in Ruprechtvoe is the only one in the world. The Czech Post issued a postage stamp of the mill, and the Czech National Bank issued a gold coin with the motif of Ruprechtov Mill. In Mariánské Lázně, there has been a model of the mill in the miniature park since 2011 (Blanka Sádková).

Vršatec

Hits: 1614

Do zániku hradu v roku 1707 vystriedal mnohých majiteľov.

Vršatec is located above Vršatské Podhradie.

The Vršatské Bradlá are a massive limestone formation, visible from a great distance. Above the village stands the Vršatec Castle. Vršatec has been mentioned as early as 1244 (trencin.sk). The Vršatské Bradlá are a significant geological and paleontological site. It contains a large number of fossils from both shallow and deep Jurassic and Cretaceous seas, including ammonites, belemnites, oysters, posidonia, and microfossils such as foraminifera, radiolaria, and calpionella protists (Morycowa, Mišík, 2005). Rare butterflies inhabit the area: Parnassius apollo, Parnassius mnemosyne, Papilio machaon, Aglia tau, and the beetle Rosalia alpina (Wikipedia). The Vršatské Bradlá are a nature reserve (enviroportal.sk). They constitute the most prominent and highest rocky ridge in Slovakia (550830 meters above sea level). The limestone massif originates from the Jurassic period (spoznaj.eu).

The oldest traces of human presence in this area date back to the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age. Stone tools have been found on Chmeľová and in the saddle between Biely Vrch and Diel. More significant settlement is dated to the late Bronze Age, with people of the Lusatian urnfield culture. They left behind burial sites and cremation graves, sometimes covered with mounds. Traces of settlements have also been found. Later settlements belong to the Púchov culture. Slavic ancestors left significant traces, with iron objects found in the Medziskalie site dating from the 9th to the early 10th century – scythes, shears, rakes, hoes, sickles, tongs, drills, double-edged knives, and axes. The construction of the medieval castle began in the 13th century. By the end of the 13th century, it came into the hands of Matúš Čák. From 1396, it belonged to Ctibor of Ctiborice. Until its demise in 1707, the castle changed hands many times.

Rakúsko – náš sused

Hits: 3717

Najväčšie jazerá sú Neusiedler See (Neziderské) a Bodamské – hraničné, a Atterské jazero (Wikipedia.sk). Často spôsobujú rýchle topenie snehu a záplavy.

V 1. až 5. storočí tu boli rímske provincie Norikum, Récia a Panónia. V 5. storočí nastali germánske a húnske vpády. V 6. storočí slovanské. V 8. storočí Bavori. V 9. storočí patrilo severovýchodné Rakúsko k Veľkej Morave. Ostatná časť podliehala Bavorsku, ktoré patrilo pod Franskú ríšu. Tzv. V roku 1278 porazil Rudolf I. Habsburský Přemysla Otakara II. a vytvoril základ panstva Habsburgovcov.

V Rakúsku žili a pôsobili mnohí svetoznámi hudobní skladatelia: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, Franz Schubert, Johann Strauss starší aj mladší, Gustav Mahler, dirigent Herbert von Karajan. Maliari: Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschk, Egon Schiele, fyzici: Wolfgang Pauli, Erwin Schrödinger, Ludwig Boltzmann, zakladateľ psychoanalýzy Sigmund Freud, etológ Konrad Lorenz, výrobca automobilov Ferdinand Porscheekonóm Friedrich August von Hayek (Wikipedia.cs). Známe sú lyžiarske strediská: Flachau, Altenmarkt, Schladming, Ramsau, Dachstein, Kitzbühel, Hintertux, Kaprun – Zell Am See, Bad Gastein (info-tour.info).

Austria (Rakúsko) is our southern neighbor, and we share a historical connection with it. Its capital city is Vienna (Viedeň). A common greeting in Austria is Grüss Gott,” which means God greet you.”

The name Österreich” translates to Eastern Realm. It originates from Old High German Ostarrichi,” which referred to the Eastern March, the easternmost territory with German inhabitants. The name Austria” is derived from the border fortress Ratgoz, now Raabs, located at the confluence of the Moravian and German Dyje rivers. Austria is divided into 9 federal states (Bundesländer): Burgenland, Niederösterreich (Lower Austria), Oberösterreich (Upper Austria), Kärnten (Carinthia), Salzburg, Steiermark (Styria), Tirol, Vienna, and Vorarlberg. The country has a population of approximately 8.5 million people. The total area of Austria is 83,871 square kilometers, with the majority covered by the Alps, making it the second-highest country in Europe. Brenner Pass serves as a crucial transportation route through the Alps from north to south. Austria’s highest peak is Grossglockner, rising to 3,798 meters above sea level. The alpine region is sparsely inhabited due to its challenging terrain, and the Brenner Pass has been historically significant for travel to Central Europe, Italy, and the Mediterranean. About one-third of Austrians reside in five major cities: Vienna, Graz, Linz, Salzburg, or Innsbruck. Salzburg, known for its well-preserved historical monuments, is sometimes referred to as the Rome of the North.”

The Danube River, flowing entirely within Austria, is navigable. The largest lakes are Neusiedler See (Neziderské) and Bodensee (bordering Germany and Switzerland), and Atterské Jazero. Austria experiences typical alpine weather with temperature fluctuations, varying wind direction and strength. Cold mountain winds rapidly warm up in the valleys, resulting in the formation of foehn winds. These winds often lead to rapid snowmelt and floods. Precipitation, mainly snow, occurs around 250 days a year in mountain slopes facing west and northwest. The Salzburg Alps receive an annual precipitation of up to 2,400 mm, while the Pannonian Plain receives only about 600 mm. Glaciers, primarily in the High Tauern, cover 600 km², contributing to 580 lakes, mostly of glacial origin, especially in the Central Alps. The Danube River flows through Austria for 350 km. The territory of present-day Austria has a rich history, including the Hallstatt culture (700 – 450 BC) and Illyrian settlements (1000 – 400 BC). From 450 BC to the turn of the millennium, Celts inhabited the area (La Tène culture). In the 1st to 5th centuries, it was part of the Roman provinces of Noricum, Raetia, and Pannonia. In the 5th century, Germanic and Hunnic invasions occurred, followed by Slavic settlements in the 6th century and Bavarians in the 8th century. In the 9th century, northeastern Austria belonged to the Great Moravia, while the remaining part was under Bavarian rule within the Frankish Empire. The so-called Eastern March (previously Avar March) formed the basis of today’s Austria. In the first half of the 10th century, it was occupied by the Magyars. After 955, it became the Eastern March of the East Frankish Empire. From the late 10th century, the designation Austria” is documented. Since 1156, it was correctly listed as the Duchy of the Holy Roman Empire. After the extinction of the Babenberg dynasty (9761251), disputes arose between Czech Přemyslids and Hungarian Árpáds. In 1278, Rudolf I of Habsburg defeated Přemysl Otakar II and laid the foundation for the Habsburg rule. Carinthia became part of Habsburg Austria in 1335. In subsequent developments, Bohemia and Hungary joined Austria (1526), and in 1556, Ferdinand I became both the ruler of Austria and the Holy Roman Emperor.

In 1804, Austria underwent a transformation into the Austrian Empire, and in 1806, the Holy Roman Empire ceased to exist. After the revolution of 1848 – 49, a harsh police regime known as Bach Absolutism was implemented. In 1867, the empire was transformed into Austria-Hungary. After World War I, Austria-Hungary was defeated, leading to its breakup into successor states. The First Austrian Republic existed in the interwar period from 1918 to 1938. In 1933, an unsuccessful fascist coup known as the Dollfuss Putsch took place. In 1938, Austria was annexed by Germany in the Anschluss. After World War II, the Second Austrian Republic was established under the administration of the victorious powers in 1945. Since 1955, Austria has been independent and neutral. Around 1527, Austria had a population of 1.5 million, which grew to over 3 million by 1810 and nearly 6 million by 1900. Approximately 98% of Austrians speak German. There is no standardized Austrian German, but Austrian variants exhibit differences from standard German, documented in the Austrian German dictionary. Two main dialects prevail: Alamannic and Bavarian. The national anthem is Land der Berge, Land am Strome” (Land of Mountains, Land by the River). Austria has been home to many world-famous composers, including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, Franz Schubert, the Strauss family, Gustav Mahler, and conductor Herbert von Karajan. Notable painters include Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, and Egon Schiele. Physicists such as Wolfgang Pauli, Erwin Schrödinger, and Ludwig Boltzmann, the founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud, ethologist Konrad Lorenz, automobile manufacturer Ferdinand Porsche, and economist Friedrich August von Hayek also lived and worked in Austria. Famous ski resorts in Austria include Flachau, Altenmarkt, Schladming, Ramsau, Dachstein, Kitzbühel, Hintertux, Kaprun-Zell Am See, and Bad Gastein.

Carnuntum v Petronelli

Hits: 2663

Chránil ho systém priekop a ochranný múr s rohovými a dvojitými vežami.

In Petronell, near Bratislava, there is a Roman camp located in Austria that is a remnant and reconstruction of the actual Roman camp Carnuntum. It features demonstrations of the societal life of that era, technical solutions for daily living in dwellings, baths, and many other interesting aspects.

The Roman metropolis Carnuntum was situated on the Amber Road, along the Roman border – Limes Romanus between Vienna and Bratislava, at the intersection of trade routes, the Amber Road, and the Danube route. It is the largest archaeological site in Austria (vinokarpat.sk). Systematic excavations have been ongoing since 1885. The word Carnuntum” is likely derived from Kar” or Karn” – stone or pile of rocks (Wikipedia.cs).

Carnuntum evolved from the 1st half of the 1st century AD until the end of Roman presence in 433. The estimated population of Carnuntum is around 50,000. Before the Romans, Celts inhabited this area, followed by the Boii tribe in the 2nd century BC. In 6 BC, the Roman Tiberius founded a military base on the territory of the Celtic city Carnuntum, attacking the Marcomannic king Maroboduus. In 8 – 9 AD, Pannonia became a Roman province as Inferior Provincia Illyricum. After the defeat in the Teutoburg Forest (9 AD), Augustus decided to abandon further conquests north of the Danube, designating the Danube as the empire’s boundary. In the following period, Carnuntum had a crucial defensive function on the Danube. Under Emperor Claudius (4154), a civilian town was also established. In 172 – 175, Marcus Aurelius fought against the Marcomanni and Quadi in Pannonia, staying in Carnuntum from 171 to 173. In 194, Carnuntum was elevated to a colony and received the name Colonia Septimia Aurelia Antoniniana Carnuntum (vinokarpat.sk).

About a kilometer west of present-day Bad Deutsch Altenburg, the 15th legion – Legio XV Apollinaris had a military camp. It was protected by a trench system and a defensive wall with corner and double towers, housing 5,000 to 6,000 soldiers. About a kilometer west of the military camp was the auxiliary legion camp – Castrum auxilii, built in the 2nd half of the 1st century and served a 500-member cavalry military garrison. Around the military camp, a settlement with solid wooden structures (canabae) was established, transforming into stone buildings during the 2nd century AD. Civilian population settled here, and this settlement spread over approximately 150 hectares. Emperor Hadrian granted urban rights to this urban settlement. Carnuntum gradually transformed into a significant trade metropolis (vinokarpat.sk).

The amphitheater in Petronell, with an area of 7244 meters, was one of the largest in the Roman Empire. However, only 8,000 spectators could fit into the arena, and the tribune gives an idea of the original height of the structure. It is assumed that the southern tribune had a two-story and elegantly furnished lodge for the governor. There was one monumental gate on the east and west sides each, and at the western entrance, there was the Nemeseum – a small sanctuary dedicated to the goddess of fate and revenge, Diana Nemesis (Information board).

Jahrh

underts n. Chr. in Steinbauten umwandelten.

Na Braunsbergu často chodia modelári so svojimi modelmi lietať. Je zaujímavé sledovať túto ich vášeň.

Braunsberg is a hill above Hainburg. There is a beautiful view of Bratislava and Devin Castle from it.

The oldest significant settlement on Braunsberg dates back to the Hallstatt period, around the 7th to 6th centuries BCE. It was once inhabited by Celts. On the western side of the hill, there is a replica of a Celtic watchtower (Haratíková). It is one of three Celtic hillforts in the area of the Hungarian Gate. The summit reaches 376 meters above sea level. Devin, another hillfort, is located less than 2 km to the northeast. The most significant was the oppidum at Bratislava Castle. It is assumed that the fortifications were built by the Boii over 2000 years ago (Urban). Model aircraft enthusiasts often frequent Braunsberg to fly their models, making it interesting to observe their passion.
