Prezentácia uvádzala napríklad použitie dronov pri zobrazovaní zelene a verejného priestoru, podujatí v meste, kultúrnych akcií či rozvojových projektov. Dronové zábery plnia funkciu atraktívneho a presného vizuálneho média, ktoré dokáže zachytiť priestorové vzťahy, rozsah územia a dynamiku mestského prostredia spôsobom, aký bežné pozemné snímkovanie neposkytuje.

Michalov202602

Ďalšou aplikačnou oblasťou je kontrola stavu infraštruktúry a stavieb. Prezentácia uvádzala detekciu tepelných a záplavových únikov, identifikáciu problémových fasád, striech a okien, ako aj monitoring ťažko dostupných objektov. Dôležitou výhodou je bezpečnosť a efektívnosť takéhoto riešenia, pretože dron dokáže sprístupniť miesta, ktoré by inak vyžadovali náročnejšie technické zásahy alebo rizikové manuálne obhliadky. Termovízne snímky zároveň umožňujú presnejšie vyhodnocovanie technického stavu objektov a podporujú prevenciu porúch či znižovanie energetických strát.

Vstupnými údajmi do tejto transformácie sú GPS súradnice drona prevedené do systému ETRS89, relatívna výška dronu, azimutové natočenie dronu a ohnisková vzdialenosť kamery.

Patrí sem vzťah medzi rozsahom územia a výškou letu drona, dĺžka záznamu, množstvo vlícovacích bodov, kolmý pohľad kamery a správne umiestenie týchto bodov.

The presentation focused on the use of unmanned aerial systems (UAVs) as tools for the collection, processing, and analysis of spatial data in the urban environment. It demonstrated that drones are not only a means of visual documentation but also an integral part of analytical and decision-making processes. In , they are used to create imagery and mapping materials, for operational monitoring of situations in the field, and for specialised analytical tasks combining imagery, thermal imaging, machine learning, and GIS processing. At the beginning of the presentation, the equipment used by the city was introduced. It included several types of drones with different characteristics and sensors, ranging from smaller devices equipped with conventional RGB sensors to more powerful platforms featuring dual sensors or the possibility of integrating additional equipment. This makes it possible to respond to a wide variety of tasks, from promotional imagery to advanced analytical applications. The presentation provided examples of drone use for visualising greenery and public spaces, urban events, cultural activities, and development projects. Drone imagery serves as an attractive and accurate visual medium capable of capturing spatial relationships, the extent of an area, and the dynamics of the urban environment in ways that conventional ground-based photography cannot provide.

A significant part of the presentation addressed the use of UAVs for monitoring high-risk events. This activity is carried out in cooperation with the Municipal Police and is based on providing patrol units with a real-time aerial overview. Drones make it possible to monitor the movement of large crowds, rapidly support crowd coordination, identify risk zones, and dispatch patrols when problematic situations arise. Their deployment also includes nighttime thermal monitoring under reduced visibility, monitoring traffic and evacuation routes, and helping to prevent traffic congestion during larger gatherings. In this context, the presentation showed UAVs not only as analytical tools but also as operational components of urban security management. Another field of application is the inspection of infrastructure and buildings. The presentation described the detection of thermal anomalies and water leaks, the identification of problematic façades, roofs, and windows, as well as the monitoring of hard-to-reach structures. One of the major advantages of this approach is its safety and efficiency, as drones can provide access to locations that would otherwise require more demanding technical interventions or risky manual inspections. Thermal imagery also enables more accurate assessment of the technical condition of structures and supports both failure prevention and the reduction of energy losses.

The presentation also demonstrated the broader use of UAVs for collecting analytical data about the urban environment. Examples included the biological control of mosquitoes, where data are collected to support interventions and identify flood-prone polygons, as well as tree management and the creation of index maps, particularly NDVI maps, including the identification of stressed trees and problematic crowns. Particular attention was given to urban heat islands, for which thermal maps are produced, automated flight missions are used, and actual results following the installation of green roofs are evaluated. This part of the presentation showed that UAVs contribute to a wide range of urban management topics, from public health to climate adaptation and green infrastructure management. The core of the presentation, however, focused on monitoring transport nodes and the advanced analysis of traffic behaviour. This analytical workflow was presented as a process involving vehicle detection, speed calculation, estimation of collision probability, and analysis of stopping behaviour. In addition to measuring traffic intensity, the approach represents a more comprehensive model for processing vehicle movements and potentially hazardous situations in urban space.

Importantly, the presentation also described the actual operational workflow. Monitoring requests are submitted through the Helpdesk service (JitBit), where the required recording duration and the area to be covered are defined. Flight preparation follows, including checking the weather forecast, verifying compliance with flight restrictions and geozones, and handling routine logistics such as batteries and memory cards. The flight itself must comply with operational safety requirements, the VLOS principle (maintaining the drone within direct visual line of sight), and energy resource management. This workflow demonstrates that the analytical value of the data begins already at the stage of carefully planned data collection. For vehicle detection, the presentation also identified the specific technological solution used for data processing. Detection is performed using the Ultralytics library, which employs the YOLO (You Only Look Once) algorithm. For top-down drone imagery, a model trained specifically for this type of input is used, called Object-Detection-From-Drone-For-Surveillance. This means that the workflow does not rely merely on a general machine-learning application but on a model specifically adapted to surveillance imagery acquired from UAVs. The result is more reliable vehicle identification in traffic situations in which objects appear at different orientations and under varying traffic densities.

The presentation also showed that the original example script provided in the Ultralytics documentation was further extended to meet the requirements of the specific analytical task. Functionality was added to draw and label areas of interest as polygons on the image, store the complete vehicle trajectory from the first to the final detection, summarise the number of vehicles first detected in one polygon and last detected in another, and export the resulting counts of movements between polygons to a CSV file. This is a particularly important aspect because it demonstrates a shift from simple object detection towards the analysis of trajectories, movement relationships, and directional traffic flows. A particularly interesting part of the presentation concerned the calculation of vehicle speeds. This requires the imagery to be captured with the camera pointing vertically downward so that object positions can be reliably transformed from the two-dimensional image into real-world space. The presentation explained that a point on the two-dimensional camera “canvas” is back-transformed into 3D space, where real-world coordinates can be used. The input data for this transformation include the drone’s GPS coordinates converted into the ETRS89 coordinate system, the drone’s relative altitude, its azimuth orientation, and the focal length of the camera. These parameters are available in the drone telemetry, for example in an accompanying .srt metadata file.

In the next step, an inverse transformation based on the so-called LookAt matrix is used to project a point from the 2D image into 3D space. Since the result of this transformation is a line containing an infinite number of points, the relevant point is selected as the one whose third coordinate is zero, corresponding to a point lying on the observed surface. All calculations are performed in the Cartesian ETRS89 coordinate system. By using the centre of the bounding box surrounding the detected vehicle, it is therefore possible to obtain real-world coordinates of the vehicle in each frame. Speed is then calculated as the ratio between the distance travelled and elapsed time. To improve accuracy, data from frames at times T and T−5 are used. This therefore represents a relatively sophisticated transition from image-based detection to a spatially referenced movement model. Another analytical layer concerns collision probability. The presentation emphasised that this is not represented by a single simple value, but forms part of a wider set of risk indicators derived from object trajectories, speed, direction of movement, and conflict points. One of the indicators used for interpretation is TTC (Time to Collision), where values below 1.5 seconds indicate high risk, values between 1.5 and 3 seconds indicate medium risk, and values above 3 seconds indicate low risk. This approach makes it possible to analyse not only actual collision situations, but also potential conflicts that are important for assessing the safety of intersections and transport nodes.

This layer is complemented by an analysis of stopping behaviour, represented by the DRAC indicator (Deceleration Rate to Avoid Crash). This value expresses the degree of deceleration that a vehicle must apply in order to avoid a collision. A low DRAC value indicates a safe situation, while a high value indicates the need for hard braking. If DRAC exceeds the vehicle’s braking capability, the situation can already be considered a collision scenario. This indicator shifts traffic analysis from simple object counting towards a deeper assessment of risk dynamics and the behaviour of road users. The presentation also identified factors affecting the quality of the results. These include the relationship between the size of the monitored area and the drone’s flight altitude, recording duration, the number of ground control points, a vertically oriented camera view, and the correct placement of these control points. This demonstrates that the resulting accuracy and usability of the analyses depend not only on the algorithms themselves but also on the quality of the entire data workflow, from data acquisition through georeferencing to interpretation.

The presentation concluded with visions for future development. Challenges related to the integration of drones into urban systems were discussed, including integration with municipal camera systems and the use of technologies such as DJI Dock, an automated drone station that could also enable continuous monitoring. The objective is to demonstrate how drones can contribute to the more efficient, safer, and more sustainable operation of a modern city. In this sense, the presentation portrayed UAVs both as a technical mapping tool and as part of an emerging analytical and operational urban infrastructure capable of integrating monitoring, geospatial data, automated analytics, and decision support.

Hana Bobáľová – Hodnotenie ekologických benefitov stromov na vybraných lokalitách mestskej časti Bratislava – Staré Mesto

Hits: 535

Tento príspevok zaznel na konferencii GIS Slovakia 2026.

Mestské prostredie dnes čelí viacerým závažným výzvam, ktoré priamo súvisia s klimatickou zmenou a urbanizáciou. Medzi najvýznamnejšie prehrievanie miest – mestské ostrovy tepla, extrémne zrážky a zrýchlený odtok , znečistenie ovzdušia či znižovanie kvality verejného priestoru.

Bobalova202601

Išlo napríklad o určovanie ukazovateľov miery presychania koruny a chýbajúcej časti koruny.

Bobalova202602

Medzi dominantné druhy patrili sofora japonská (Styphnolobium japonicum), javor mliečny (Acer platanoides), javor horský (Acer pseudoplatanus), borovica čierna (Pinus nigra) a brestovec západný (Celtis occidentalis). Stromy prispievajú k znižovaniu koncentrácií O₃ (ozónu), SO₂, NO₂, CO.

Prezentácia zároveň naznačuje ďalšie smerovanie výskumu, ktoré zahŕňa identifikáciu korún stromov pomocou leteckého laserového skenovania, tvorbu modelu výšky korunového zápoja, segmentáciu korún a výpočet metrík stromovej vegetácie.

Urban environments currently face several serious challenges directly associated with climate change and urbanisation. The most significant include the overheating of cities and the formation of urban heat islands, extreme precipitation and accelerated water runoff, air pollution, and the declining quality of public spaces. In this context, urban trees are becoming essential components of green infrastructure. Their contribution is not merely aesthetic but encompasses a complex range of ecological, climatic, and social functions. Trees also represent one of the most effective local climate-change adaptation measures. They contribute to cooling the environment through shading and evapotranspiration, improve air quality, support carbon sequestration and storage, intercept rainwater, and regulate runoff. In addition, they support biodiversity, recreation, physical activity, mental health, and social cohesion. For the purposes of municipal practice, these benefits need to be expressed quantitatively. Numerical results provide a much stronger basis for justifying investments in green infrastructure, optimising tree-planting plans, and comparing alternative solutions.

The i-Tree Eco tool, developed by the USDA Forest Service and used in numerous countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden, the Netherlands, Poland, and Hungary, was applied to assess the ecological benefits. The model makes it possible to analyse air quality, carbon balances, energy savings, and the ecological functions of trees. The analysis was conducted for the Bratislava–Old Town borough. For the purposes of the assessment, it was necessary to standardise taxonomic names, define land-use parameters, and add characteristics describing the health of individual trees. These included indicators such as the degree of crown dieback and the proportion of missing crown. Air-pollution data and meteorological data were also included in the assessment. Calculations of carbon storage took into account leaf area, leaf biomass, and the total dry biomass of each tree, with the amount of stored carbon calculated as a proportion of the biomass. Gross carbon sequestration, meaning the capture and long-term storage of carbon, was subsequently modelled using the expected growth of the tree over time. This approach gives the results greater analytical value because it evaluates not only the current condition but also the ability of trees to contribute to the future climatic stability of the city.

The presentation also demonstrates the relationship between tree vegetation and the energy balance of buildings. The distance and azimuth of trees in relation to the nearest buildings were assessed, while the building data were obtained from OpenStreetMap. This approach confirms that the ecological benefits of trees cannot be understood solely in terms of their role as natural elements within a city. Trees are also factors affecting energy consumption, thermal comfort, and the adaptation of urbanised environments to changing climatic conditions. The dominant species included the Japanese pagoda tree (Styphnolobium japonicum), Norway maple (Acer platanoides), sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus), Austrian pine (Pinus nigra), and common hackberry (Celtis occidentalis). In terms of carbon sequestration, fast-growing species with large amounts of biomass, such as black locust, honey locust, horse chestnut, birch, linden, and pine, proved to be the most effective. These species also demonstrated high levels of oxygen production. Trees contribute to reducing concentrations of O₃, or ozone, SO₂, NO₂, and CO. Coniferous trees play a particularly important role in removing air pollution because they remain effective throughout the year. In terms of water retention and runoff regulation, Austrian pine proved especially important, together with deciduous trees with large leaf areas that support evapotranspiration.

The results indicate that trees stabilise the urban climate, reduce ambient temperatures, and mitigate the effects of urban heat islands. At the same time, they regulate the urban water regime, intercept precipitation, and slow water runoff. They also make a significant contribution to improving air quality by capturing pollutants and helping to reduce greenhouse-gas concentrations. The research also confirms their social and health-related importance. Trees reduce stress, encourage physical activity, and create more favourable environments for social interaction. The entire approach is closely connected with GIS technologies, which function not merely as tools for map visualisation but as analytical platforms for spatial assessment, scenario modelling, and decision support. The Japanese pagoda tree achieved the highest economic value expressed in terms of replacement value. The results clearly demonstrate that urban trees have both measurable climatic effects and quantifiable economic value. The quality of the results directly depends on the quality of the input data. The analysis confirms that urban greenery stores thousands of tonnes of CO₂ equivalent, improves air quality, regulates the water regime, reduces environmental temperatures, and generates tangible ecological and economic benefits.

The presentation also outlines possible directions for further research, including the identification of tree crowns using airborne laser scanning, the creation of canopy height models, crown segmentation, and the calculation of tree-vegetation metrics. It also introduces analyses of the shading potential of trees using lidar data. This means that assessments of ecological benefits may in the future progress beyond conventional tree-inventory databases towards semi-automated mapping and the modelling of locations where detailed urban-tree inventories are not yet available. This is precisely where the potential of GIS and Earth observation becomes particularly evident, as they provide essential tools for the modern management of urban greenery.

Radovan Hilbert – Adaptačné opatrenia, zvýšenie odolnosti na negatívne aspekty klimatickej zmeny

Hits: 537

Tento príspevok zaznel na konferencii GIS Slovakia 2026.

Klimatická zmena predstavuje jeden z najzásadnejších environmentálnych a spoločenských problémov súčasnosti. Rastúca frekvencia extrémnych javov, zmeny v distribúcii zrážok či teplotné extrémy si vyžadujú nielen globálne riešenia, ale najmä lokálne adaptačné opatrenia založené na dátach. Dôležité je efektívne spracovanie klimatických dát priamo v lokálnom kontexte, čo umožňuje rýchlejšie, presnejšie a cielenejšie rozhodovanie. Klimatická zmena nie je izolovaný jav. Ide o komplexný systém prepojených procesov, ktoré ovplyvňujú biodiverzitu, stabilitu ekosystémov, hospodárske aktivity, kvalitu života obyvateľstva. Základným predpokladom efektívnej adaptácie je práca s dátami.

Projekt FOCAL (Horizon Europe) zdôrazňuje potrebu lokálneho spracovania klimatických dát, využitie priestorových analýz, integráciu rôznych dátových zdrojov – meteorologických, environmentálnych a infraštruktúrnych. Digitálne riešenia – typický príklad prepojenia GIS, rozhodovania, analýzy veľmi veľkých dát: detekcia a monitorovanie javov v priestore a čase, automatizované spracovanie dát, univerzálne využitie naprieč sektormi, optimalizácia lokalít, hodnotenie variantných riešení, riadenie zásahov v území. Do projektu je zapojených viacero partnerov: Fraunhofer IGD (Koordinatátor), Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, plan4all, Lesprojekt-Sluzby, Západočeská univerzita v Plzni (ZČU), CESNET, Národní lesnický institut (NLI), České vysoké učení technické v Praze, MNLT Innovations PC, European Innovation Marketplace, Open Geospatial Consortium, AICFD – International Association for Disruptive and Frontier Science, YMS, Stadt Konstanz.

Globálne cirkulačné – GCM pracujú v hrubšom priestorovom rozlíšení, približne v rozsahu stoviek až desiatok kilometrov, a opisujú veľkopriestorové procesy v atmosfére a klimatickom systéme.

Prezentácia uvádza napríklad dĺžku a frekvenciu horúcich periód, počet vlhkých a suchých dní, dĺžku suchých periód, počet ľadových dní, letných dní, horúcich dní, veľmi horúcich dní či extrémne horúcich dní.

hilbert202605

Climate change represents one of the most fundamental environmental and societal challenges of our time. The increasing frequency of extreme events, changes in precipitation distribution, and temperature extremes require not only global solutions, but above all local adaptation measures based on data. Efficient processing of climate data directly within the local context is essential, as it enables faster, more accurate, and more targeted decision-making. Climate change is not an isolated phenomenon. It is a complex system of interconnected processes that affect biodiversity, ecosystem stability, economic activities, and the quality of life of the population. Working with data is a basic prerequisite for effective adaptation.

The FOCAL project, funded under Horizon Europe, highlights the need for local climate data processing, the use of spatial analysis, and the integration of various data sources, including meteorological, environmental, and infrastructure data. A key objective is the shift from global models towards local decision-support tools. Digital solutions represent a typical example of the interconnection between GIS, decision-making, and the analysis of very large datasets: the detection and monitoring of phenomena across space and time, automated data processing, universal use across sectors, location optimisation, the evaluation of alternative solutions, and the management of interventions within a territory. The project involves several partners: Fraunhofer IGD as coordinator, the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, plan4all, Lesprojekt-Sluzby, the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, CESNET, the National Forest Institute, the Czech Technical University in Prague, MNLT Innovations PC, the European Innovation Marketplace, the Open Geospatial Consortium, AICFD – International Association for Disruptive and Frontier Science, YMS, and the City of Konstanz.

Another important aspect is the internal functioning of organisations: the unification of agendas, improved process awareness, faster communication, and the digitalisation of services. Modern territorial management requires targeted measures, the analysis of alternatives, and the optimisation of interventions. Without data, this leads to intuitive decision-making; with data, it leads to optimised decision-making. Adaptation measures cannot be understood merely as a set of general recommendations, but rather as the outcome of an interconnected data and analytical ecosystem. In this context, the FOCAL project – Efficient Exploration of Climate Data Locally – is particularly important, as it is built on several interconnected layers. These include the FOCAL platform, designed to support climate modelling and Earth system tasks; specialised modules for assessing mitigation, the reduction of adverse impacts and risks, and adaptation at regional and local levels; web applications intended for assessment and local analysis; and a long-term cooperation cluster connecting Earth system research, Earth observation data providers, data science, and HPC infrastructure for computationally demanding tasks.

The presentation explains climate modelling, in this case the principle of dynamic downscaling using regional climate models, or RCMs. Global circulation models, or GCMs, operate at a coarser spatial resolution, approximately ranging from hundreds to tens of kilometres, and describe large-scale processes in the atmosphere and the climate system. RCMs enable more detailed modelling over smaller areas, with spatial resolution reaching several kilometres. Relevant physical processes are modelled in three-dimensional space and with very short internal time steps, ranging from minutes to seconds. This increase in resolution is crucial for the local assessment of climate change impacts. Future climate development is represented through scenarios, initially by the older RCP scenarios – representative concentration pathways for greenhouse gases – and subsequently through the SSP framework – shared socioeconomic pathways used in more recent assessments by the IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Importantly, future development is not presented as a single trajectory, but as a set of possible development pathways with different emission levels and different temperature responses. This is followed by the principle of ensemble simulations, meaning sets of simulations that combine uncertainty in emission scenarios, uncertainty in climate models, and the internal variability of the climate system. Such an approach makes it possible to produce more robust climate information for decision-making. In this context, the presentation also mentions the NUKLEUS project, which applies downscaling to a resolution of up to 3 kilometres, bringing climate data to a level that is far more suitable for regional and urban applications.

Another significant theme of the presentation is the integration of climate data with artificial intelligence methods. This involves a relatively specific technological framework. The presentation refers to autoencoders, neural networks, transformer models for image processing, physics-informed models, and image super-resolution methods. These approaches indicate a shift from conventional modelling towards hybrid systems that combine physical knowledge with data-driven learning. The presentation suggests that, in this context, AI should primarily support increases in spatial resolution, the processing of large volumes of data, prediction, and the more efficient extraction of information from heterogeneous sources.

The data and workflow component of the presentation is also highly specific. It works with climate data in the NetCDF format, which is a standard format for multidimensional scientific data. The basic input variables include maximum temperature, minimum temperature, mean temperature, precipitation, near-surface wind speed, and relative humidity. Climate indices are subsequently calculated from these variables. The presentation mentions, for example, the duration and frequency of hot spells, the number of wet and dry days, the duration of dry periods, and the number of frost days, summer days, hot days, very hot days, and extremely hot days. It also specifically mentions biometeorological indices such as the UTCI – Universal Thermal Climate Index – and PET – Physiological Equivalent Temperature – which connect physical climate variables with actual human thermal comfort.

The presentation demonstrates that the results are intended to become usable decision-support tools. It therefore includes an example of the FOCAL web application, in which users select data sources, an area of interest, climate indicators, temporal aggregation, and spatial aggregation. The example visualises maps, charts, tables, and time series, providing forms of output that are understandable and practically usable. The workflows themselves are particularly important, especially the Climate Change Workflow and the Urban Blue Spot Workflow. The first represents a general framework for processing climate change data, calculating indicators, and visualising changes over time and space. The second points towards specific urban problems, particularly locations vulnerable to water accumulation, the vulnerability of urbanised environments, and the practical use of data in urban planning. In this way, the presentation concludes as an example of the transition from a scientific model and a data workflow to a real web application supporting local adaptation decision-making.

Particularly sensitive areas include urban environments, agriculture, water management, and forest ecosystems. Urbanisation increases temperatures, accelerates water runoff, and increases territorial vulnerability. The solution lies in the integration of greenery and blue-green infrastructure. Adaptation measures include tree planting, green roofs, green walls, wetland restoration, retention basins, flood protection measures, the modification of watercourses, spatial planning, construction regulation, and municipal climate strategies. Without adaptation, damage increases, quality of life decreases, and economic costs rise.

Climate adaptation and climate change are both scientific and technological challenges requiring a substantial volume of research, projects, and international partnerships. The future must be addressed at both global and local levels. It requires precise analyses, models, and specific measures. The way in which we approach the management of landscapes, cities, and infrastructure is changing. For GIS professionals, this represents a fundamental transformation of their role from mapmakers into architects of decision-making.

GIS Slovakia 2026

Hits: 782

Konferencia GIS Slovakia sa konala v reprezentatívnych priestoroch Zrkadlovej siene Primaciálneho paláca v Bratislave v dňoch 23. – 24. marca 2026.

Druhý tematický okruh reflektuje rastúci význam interoperability dát, dopravných modelov a konceptu Digital Twin.

The GIS Slovakia conference was held in the representative premises of the Mirror Hall of the Primate’s Palace in Bratislava on March 23–24, 2026. The event focused on two main thematic areas: climate change and the harmonization of spatial data. Both areas currently represent key challenges for all of us.

Climate change is a phenomenon that is increasingly affecting the functioning of both landscapes and cities. Although its impacts are often more pronounced at higher altitudes, the majority of the population lives in lowland urbanized areas, where it manifests primarily through urban heat islands, extreme weather events, and pressure on urban infrastructure. For this reason, the contribution of climatologist Pavel Faško was particularly valuable, as he presented a synthesis of temporal and spatial changes in meteorological elements in Slovakia. The climate-focused session was further complemented by presentations addressing landscape vulnerability, ecosystem services of urban greenery, climate risks, and snow cover modeling using GIS tools.

The second thematic area reflects the growing importance of data interoperability, transport models, and the Digital Twin concept. Contributions focused on practical aspects of spatial data harmonization, sharing spatial information between organizations, the use of sensor network data for urban planning, and improving the accessibility of public spaces. Special attention was also given to semi-automated modeling of road network accessibility and modern approaches to managing technical and green urban infrastructure.

A significant common denominator of the contributions was their strong spatial dimension and supra-regional scope. Geoinformation technologies make it possible to connect knowledge across different spatial scales and reveal relationships that would otherwise remain hidden. At the same time, it is increasingly evident that climate change does not recognize human boundaries. Both its impacts and the necessary adaptation measures inherently require a cross-border and supra-regional approach, placing increased demands on data harmonization, system interoperability, and coordinated spatial management.

The event was organized by the Digitalization Section – Data Department of the Bratislava City Hall. Over the two conference days, a total of 16 presentations were delivered, five of which were prepared by my colleagues. Each presentation was followed by a short discussion.

I believe that the conference provided many valuable insights and sources of inspiration. It was an important opportunity not only for us as organizers but also for all participants. With the exception of one climatological presentation, all contributions were delivered by GIS professionals. One particular idea resonated strongly among attendees, speakers, and even within our own internal discussions. During the conference and after its conclusion, there was a recurring focus on the future.

Barokový Schlosshof

Hits: 3125

Schlosshof slúžilo ako prázdninové sídlo Habsburgovcov. Nachádza sa neďaleko od Devínskej Novej Vsi. Odporúčam prechádzku cez Cyklomost Slobody, bude to príjemná polhodinka.

Schlosshof je osada mestečka Engelhartstetten (schlosshof.cestovanie.biz) v Dolnom Rakúsku, v blízkosti Moravy a -rakúskej hranice (schlosshof.at). Rozloha areálu presahuje 50 hektárov a zahŕňa samotný zámok, rozsiahle terasové a hospodársky dvor (schlosshof.at).

Až do roku 1955. Dlhodobé vojenské využívanie spôsobilo výrazné poškodenie budov aj záhrad (schlosshof.at).

Záhrady zdobia , plastiky a pravidelne upravené partery.

Schloss Hof served as a holiday residence of the Habsburg dynasty. It is located not far from Devínska Nová Ves. I recommend a walk across the Freedom Cycle Bridge (Cyklomost Slobody) – it is a pleasant half-hour stroll.

Schloss Hof is a district of the municipality of Engelhartstetten in Lower Austria, near the (March) River and the Slovak-Austrian border. In the 12th and 13th centuries it was mentioned as “Burg Hof,” a fortress belonging to the Eckartsau estate. Covering more than 50 hectares, the complex is one of the largest Baroque palace estates in Central Europe and ranks among Austria’s most significant Baroque monuments. The grounds include the palace itself, extensive terraced gardens, and a former agricultural estate.

The origins of the site date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, when it functioned as a fortified stronghold. Its strategic border location gave it defensive importance. Today, the area is characterized by lush greenery and landscaped gardens. There is also a small zoo, stables, horses, and various farm animals.

Schloss Hof is considered the largest Baroque palace complex in Austria. Its modern history began in 1726, when Prince Eugene of Savoy fulfilled his vision of a grand summer residence. The architect was Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt. In 1755, Maria Theresa received the palace as a gift. At the end of the 19th century, Emperor Franz Joseph I handed the property over to the imperial army. Schloss Hof became the venue for important social events, celebrations, and diplomatic meetings.

During World War II the complex was used by the German army and, from 1945 until 1955, by the Soviet army. The prolonged military use caused significant damage to the buildings and gardens. Restoration began in 2002, and since 2005 the palace has been open to the public.

A major highlight is the Neptune Fountain. The interiors include representative halls, a banqueting hall, fresco decorations, and gilded stucco ornaments. Throughout the year, various events are held here, including Easter and Christmas markets, summer open-air concerts, and craft festivals.

The gardens are adorned with fountains, sculptures, and carefully maintained parterres. The estate also includes the extensive Meierhof (manor farm), which once ensured the functioning of the estate and today showcases traditional crafts and historical breeds of farm animals. More than 200 animals can be found here, including donkeys, horses, camels, goats, sheep, peacocks, alpacas, llamas, chickens, and pigs.

In the summer months, approximately 35,000 flowers bloom in the gardens. The palace gardens also offer peaceful corners ideal for a walk or a picnic in the shade of trees. The terraces were designed in the French style. Within just a few years, under the direction of garden engineer Anton Zinner, one of the most significant Baroque gardens in the German-speaking world was created. An important part of the decoration is a sculptural ensemble by Johann Christoph Mader. The grounds also include a herb garden, a regional Weinviertel garden with local plants, a “tasting” garden, a garden of diversity, and a rose garden.
