Sirôtky

Hits: 115

Sirôtka je jednoročná až dvojročná bylina s tenkým krátkym koreňom, byľami vysokými približne 10 – 25, maximálne 35 cm, stopkatými vajcovitými až kopijovitými listami, veľkými prílistkami, dlho stopkatými kvetmi a vajcovitými tupo trojhrannými tobolkami so žltohnedými hladkými semenami (Kornélia Goliašová at all). Sirôtky v záhradníckej praxi označujú najmä veľkokveté záhradné hybridy Viola × wittrockiana, zatiaľ čo menšie „minisirôtky“ a záhonové violy často k Viola cornuta alebo k jej hybridom. Rod Viola je taxonomicky veľmi rozsiahly (kew.org). Viola × wittrockiana je viacnásobný umelý hybrid rôznych druhov sekcie Melanium, napríklad Viola tricolor, Viola lutea, Viola cornuta, Viola altaica a pravdepodobne aj ďalších druhov (Kornélia Goliašová at all). Z botanického hľadiska patria sirôtky do čeľade Violaceae.

Prípadne vošky, slizniaky a slimáky, múčnatka, peronospóra a koreňové hniloby.

Ak chcete jemnejší, hustejší a spravidla o niečo dlhšie trvajúci efekt, siahnite po Viola cornuta a sériách typu Sorbet XP (panamseed.com). Odstraňovanie odkvitnutých kvetov predlžuje kvitnutie a spätný rez pomáha oživiť vytiahnuté rastliny (missouribotanicalgarden.org).

Sirôtky majú jemný koreňový systém, preto im najviac vyhovuje kyprá, humózna a dobre prevzdušnená pôda.

Sirôtky trpia kombináciou chladného vlhka a hustej výsadby. Preto je vhodný priepustný substrát, ranná zálievka, pravidelný zber poškodených listov, vzdušný spon a dôsledná kontrola porastu (missouri.edu). Z pestovateľského hľadiska patria medzi najčastejšie problémy antraknóza, škvrnitosti listov, čierna koreňová hniloba, koreňová a korunová hniloba, sivá pleseň, vošky, roztoče, slimáky a slizniaky (clemson.edu). Najspoľahlivejší spoločníci sirôtok sú jarné cibuľoviny a ďalšie jarné dvojročky, napr. tulipány, hyacinty, narcisy, nezábudky, sedmokrásky, prvosienky (Daniel Košťál).

The pansy is an annual to biennial herb with a thin, short root, stems approximately 10–25 cm high (rarely up to 35 cm), petiolate ovate to lanceolate leaves, large stipules, long-stalked flowers, and ovate, bluntly three-angled capsules containing yellow-brown, smooth seeds (Kornélia Goliašová et al.). In horticultural practice, the term “pansies” primarily refers to the large-flowered garden hybrids Viola × wittrockiana, while smaller “mini pansies” and bedding violas often belong to Viola cornuta or its hybrids. The genus Viola is taxonomically very extensive (kew.org).

Viola × wittrockiana is a complex artificial hybrid derived from several species of the section Melanium, including Viola tricolor, Viola lutea, Viola cornuta, Viola altaica, and likely others (Kornélia Goliašová et al.). Botanically, pansies belong to the family Violaceae. The genus Viola is distributed worldwide, particularly in temperate regions and mountainous areas (pladias.sk).

Morphologically, violas are highly variable. They may be annuals, biennials, or perennials, with simple or lobed leaves and five-petaled, distinctly zygomorphic flowers. For the garden pansy, Slovak flora describes a thin, short root and stems that are simple or branched from the base. A practical distinguishing feature between “pansy” and “viola” is petal arrangement: pansies typically have four petals facing upward and one downward, whereas violas usually have three upward and two downward (rhs.org.uk). Viola × wittrockiana originated in the 19th century through hybridization of multiple Viola species and is associated with the name William Thompson (missouri.edu).

For the average gardener, the key point is that pansies are cool-season plants, with their main ornamental effect in autumn, early spring, and spring. They grow best in humus-rich, well-drained, consistently slightly moist soil, in full sun to partial shade. Summer heat shortens their lifespan (ncsu.edu). If you want a large number of pansies, the most reliable method is sowing in the first half of summer, growing seedlings until autumn, and planting them out in autumn so they overwinter and bloom early in spring (thompson-morgan.com).

The most common cultivation mistakes include waterlogged substrate without drainage, overly dense and poorly ventilated plantings, excessive nitrogen fertilization, and failure to remove spent flowers. Typical problems also include aphids, slugs and snails, powdery mildew, downy mildew, and root rots. The best prevention consists of hygiene, morning watering, good air circulation, regular crop inspection, and support of natural predators (rhs.org.uk). Smaller, well-rooted plants generally overwinter better than large, overgrown specimens (missouribotanicalgarden.org).

Viola × wittrockiana is cultivated as an annual to biennial plant. Slovak flora states flowering from March to September, but cultivation profiles indicate that modern cultivars bloom primarily in cooler periods and, in mild winters, even continuously. Viola tricolor is short-lived and readily self-seeds; its capsules may contain dozens of seeds that are explosively dispersed when dry. Viola odorata forms basal rosettes, long stolons, and flowers mainly in spring. Some violets also produce cleistogamous (self-pollinating, non-opening) flowers that ensure reliable seed production.

Pansies have long been well established on the market. In addition to species names, older or regional cultivars are also known locally, such as “Pirnavská svetlo modrá,” “Zlatá koruna,” “Zlato Rýna,” “Tango,” “Žiara Álp,” and the Fancy F1 group. However, current production is largely based on modern F1 series offering uniform habit, synchronized flowering, and predictable use in beds or containers (Kornélia Goliašová et al.). Large-flowered series such as Matrix and Delta provide the most striking “face” flowers for urban beds and display containers. Cool Wave is ideal for trailing use in window boxes and hanging baskets. For a finer, denser, and usually longer-lasting effect, Viola cornuta and series such as Sorbet XP are recommended (panamseed.com). Removing spent flowers prolongs blooming, and cutting back helps rejuvenate leggy plants (missouribotanicalgarden.org).

There is no single “best” propagation method for pansies; the appropriate choice depends on the goal. Seeds are the most economical and ideal for large areas. Division is the most reliable method for perennial violas. Cuttings are best when preserving a specific cultivar (gardenersworld.com). Seeds germinate relatively slowly, usually within 10–20 days. Sow them in a fine, well-drained substrate; either gently press the seed onto the surface or cover it very lightly. In professional production, pansy seeds are typically covered, kept at 18–21 °C initially, and then grown under cooler conditions. In practice, this means shallow sowing, even moisture without waterlogging, and as cool conditions as possible after germination (thompson-morgan.com). If growing pansies only for spring display, pre-cultivation 6–8 weeks before the last frost is possible, but autumn planting usually yields better early spring results (Sherri Sanders).

Perennial violas are divided mainly in autumn. Lift the clump, gently separate it by hand or knife into several parts, and immediately replant each division into fresh substrate or a new bed location. This method is especially suitable for Viola odorata and more perennial types of Viola cornuta. Regular watering after division is essential until new roots establish (gardenersworld.com).

Pansy cuttings are taken in spring from young, vigorous plants or in late summer after trimming. Select short, non-flowering shoots, cut them below a node, remove lower leaves, pinch the tip, and insert into a coarse, sandy substrate up to the lower leaves. Covering the surface with coarse mineral material (e.g., grit or coarse sand) helps prevent rot at the cutting base. Keep containers in a bright but cool and sheltered location. Once new growth appears and roots reach drainage holes, transplant individually. This method is best for maintaining a specific cultivar’s characteristics (gardenersworld.com).

Pansies have a delicate root system, so they perform best in loose, humus-rich, well-aerated soil. Incorporating well-decomposed organic matter is beneficial. In containers, use fresh, high-quality substrate. Professional production typically maintains a slightly acidic pH around 5.5–5.8. Avoid heavy, compacted, or depleted substrates, and renew them when reusing containers (missouri.edu). Pansies must not dry out, but they also do not tolerate prolonged waterlogging. Water at the roots during the day so foliage dries by evening (missouri.edu). Fertilization should be moderate; pansies dislike excess phosphorus. Recommended spacing is approximately 15–25 cm (Daniel Košťál, Dano Veselský). Autumn plantings usually bloom earlier after winter than spring plantings (missouribotanicalgarden.org).

Pansies are prone to problems under conditions of cool moisture combined with dense planting. Therefore, use well-drained substrate, water in the morning, regularly remove damaged leaves, maintain adequate spacing, and monitor crops carefully (missouri.edu). Common issues include anthracnose, leaf spot diseases, black root rot, root and crown rots, gray mold, aphids, mites, slugs, and snails (clemson.edu).

The most reliable companions for pansies are spring bulbs and other spring biennials, such as tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, forget-me-nots, daisies, and primroses (Daniel Košťál).

Sandberg – svedok minulosti, klenot súčasnosti

Hits: 9669

Medzi najvýznamnejšie rôzne druhy orchideí a teplomilného hmyzu (ibot.sav.sk).

Sandberg is part of Devínska Kobyla. Many residents of frequently visit Sandberg. From Devínska Nová Ves, it is just a short trip away.

Sandberg is a Late Tertiary paleontological site of European significance. It was uncovered by a sand quarry. It consists of remnants of the Tertiary sea, which once covered the Vienna Basin. On Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous limestones, which are 160 – 180 million years old, sands with layers of gravel sands, sandstones, and breccias were deposited 14 – 16 million years ago when the sea significantly rose. The sand wall contains visible horizontal layers of more resistant sandstone and lithothamnion limestone. On the slopes and at the base, large boulders of sandstone and lithothamnion limestone remain, left behind after the last chamber explosion.

Around 300 fossilized species have been discovered here, including gastropods, bivalves, sea urchins, sponges, foraminifera, and larger marine and terrestrial animals. The most famous finds include shark teeth, bony fish, a whale vertebra, remains of turtles, monkeys, seals, woolly rhinoceroses, cave bears, and birds. The current flora includes several endangered and protected psammophilous species, such as Peucedanum arenarium, Minuartia glaucina, and Gypsophila paniculata (Information board). The oldest geological layers here are over 100 million years old. During the Tertiary period, Sandberg was alternately a sea bottom, a reef, or part of a coastal island system (devinskakobyla.sk). Sandberg is located on the western slopes of Devínska Kobyla and is part of the Devínska Kobyla National Nature Reserve (slovakia.travel).

Sand was once mined here and transported via an overhead cableway to a port on the Morava River. During the Tertiary period, 14 – 16 million years ago, a sea covered this area (panorama.sk). As the name suggests, Sandberg is composed of sands, sandstones, lithothamnion, lumachelle, and sandy limestones, as well as breccias and sandy clays. Geologically, these rocks have been deposited for only a short time, so they are only slightly consolidated. This is one of the reasons why Sandberg is a world-famous site for Neogene fossils. More than 300 fossilized species have been found here, including bivalves, worms, sponges, oysters, gastropods, sea urchins, bryozoans, foraminifera, sharks, seals, and various fish. A vertebra of the whale Mesocetus hungaricus was even discovered here.

Sandberg was once the seabed of a 60-meter-deep ocean, as well as a beach, a reef, and dry land. Washed-down remains of organisms related to modern rhinos, antelopes, canines, mastodons, and deinotheriums were mainly deposited here from northern slopes. Significant discoveries include fragments of the primates Pliopithecus antiguus and Sivapithecus darwini, considered ancestors of modern Indian gibbons. Teeth of Dryopithecus were also found here, which is classified as a precursor of modern great apes (devinska.sk). Marine organisms fossilized here date back 14 – 16 million years (sazp.sk). A Tertiary whale vertebra was discovered here by children of Albín Brunovský (Vodička). An astonishing find was the nearly complete shell of a turtle (panorama.sk). Marine sediments formed sandstone layers, which are now exposed as yellow rock faces of the former sandstone quarry (slovakia.travel).

Due to its warm and dry conditions, Sandberg is home to many rare plant and animal species. The most notable include various orchids and thermophilic insects (ibot.sav.sk). Free grazing is currently taking place on Sandberg, with the advantage that animals choose their food themselves, preventing overgrazing and creating a diverse landscape. Such extensive grazing is essential for the restoration and maintenance of biodiversity. It suppresses tree overgrowth, allowing the return of forest-steppe ecosystems and rare plant and animal species. Animals also naturally disperse plant seeds, supporting specialized species adapted to these conditions. The disturbance of the soil surface helps rare plant species germinate and creates favorable conditions for insects. The process is monitored zoologically and botanically to assess the impact of grazing on selected species (Information board).

Sandberg a Devínska Kobyla része.

Dryopithecus fogai is előkerültek, amelyeket a mai emberszabású majmok elődeinek tekintenek (devinska.sk). A fosszilizált tengeri élőlények itt 14 – 16 millió évvel ezelőtt éltek (sazp.sk).

Rastliny

Hits: 26564

Kvety pridávajú farbu, textúru a život, ich krása je zdrojom radosti a potešenia, a ich prítomnosť oživuje priestor a dodáva mu charakter.

Plants represent an extraordinary world that forms the foundation of our planet’s biodiversity. This diversity plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. Natural plants exhibit a diverse morphology. Roots serve to anchor the plant in the soil and acquire nutrients. Stems support the plant and facilitate the transport of water and nutrients. Leaves are the primary organs of photosynthesis, where solar energy transforms into chemical energy. Flowers are the reproductive organs, while fruits contain seeds essential for the plant’s life cycle.

Plants undergo complex physiological processes that enable them to survive and thrive. Photosynthesis is a key process where plants utilize solar energy and carbon dioxide to produce organic matter, releasing oxygen into the atmosphere. Respiration, transpiration, and water conduction are other vital physiological processes ensuring the life and functionality of plants. Plants are fundamental building blocks of ecosystems, serving as the primary producers, aside from a minimal number of chemotrophic organisms. They provide habitat and sustenance for diverse animal species.

Additionally, plants possess the ability to regenerate soil and purify water from unwanted substances and toxins. They are an integral part of human civilization, offering us food in the form of fruits, vegetables, grains, and other crops. Many plants exhibit medicinal properties, contributing to traditional and modern medicine. Furthermore, plants hold cultural and aesthetic values expressed through gardens, art, and symbols.

With increasing human activity and climate changes, natural plants are often endangered. Biodiversity loss, invasive species, and deforestation pose significant threats. Hence, it is crucial to implement protective measures, including preserving natural habitats, maintaining genetic diversity, and adopting sustainable soil management practices. The intricate relationship between humans and natural plants underscores the importance of conserving and sustainably utilizing this rich biological diversity.

Plantae mirabilem mundum constituunt, qui biodiversitatis fundamentum in nostro planeta collocat. Haec varietas partes fundamentales agit in conservatione aequilibri oecologici.

Cultivated flowers have a long history intertwined with human culture and are an integral part of our gardens and homes. Their beauty, fragrance, and symbolic significance make them more than just decorations – they are symbols of love, joy, peace, and many other emotions. Flowers add color, texture, and life; their beauty is a source of joy and pleasure, and their presence enlivens the space and gives it character. Many types of flowers have symbolic meanings and are associated with various emotions and events. Roses are symbols of love and romance, lilies represent purity and innocence, and sunflowers symbolize friendship and joyful thoughts. Flowers are often used to express condolences, celebrations, or gratitude. Flowers also have therapeutic effects. The presence of flowers in households or workspaces can improve mood, reduce stress and anxiety, and enhance creativity and productivity. Gardening or caring for flowers can also be a relaxing and therapeutic activity.

Kopaničiarsky región Myjava

Hits: 4114

Hranica so Záhorím je zhruba v línii obcí Jablonica, Prietrž, Turá Lúka, Vrbovce (frndzalicafest.sk). Administratívne myjavský región zahŕňa okresy a časť okresu Nové Mesto nad Váhom (trencinregion.sk).

Výroba dreveného riadu, lyžičiek, soľničiek, variech a hračiek.

Kopaničiarsku piesňovú tvorbu charakterizuje sklon k žartovnému prekáraniu, jemnej irónii a posmešku. Významnými osobnosťami medzi ľudovými muzikantmi boli primáši Samko Dudík z Myjavy a Ján Petrucha z Priepasného (muni.cz).

Rastlinné zloženie zahŕňa dubovo-bukové i dubovo-hrabové , s umelo vysadenými porastami ihličnanov v niektorých častiach. Do regiónu zasahujú aj Chránené krajinné oblasti a , ktoré chránia bohatú biodiverzitu a prírodné prostredie (myjava.sk).

The Myjava region extends across the Myjava Hills and the foothills of the White Carpathians. The boundary with the region roughly follows the line of the villages Jablonica, Prietrž, Turá Lúka, and Vrbovce (frndzalicafest.sk). Administratively, the Myjava region includes the Myjava District and part of the Nové Mesto nad Váhom District (trencinregion.sk). It is often also referred to as Kopanice, a name derived from the characteristic scattered settlement pattern in the landscape (trencinregion.sk).

The eastern part of the area was settled as early as the Slavic period, while the more hilly western part was colonized only from the 13th century onward. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the region came under the influence of Wallachian colonization from Kysuce, which led to the development of dispersed homestead settlements. Villages usually received names based on the original settlers. A typical skill of the Kopanice inhabitants was peddling trade, travelling for seasonal work, and even migration overseas (frndzalicafest.sk). The famous character Sváko Ragan from Brezová was inspired by the tanner Marián Lacko (trencinregion.sk).

The Kopanice way of life shaped local culture – residents were mainly engaged in subsistence agriculture, fruit growing, livestock breeding, and crafts. They were also known for their mobility, trading activities, and seasonal work outside the region (muni.cz). In the past, people also moved to the Myjava area to reduce the risk of danger, for example from Ottoman incursions. Today, the region is experiencing depopulation and is increasingly becoming a recreational cottage area.

In the Myjava area, the population was predominantly of the Evangelical (Lutheran) faith. The production of items made from straw, wicker, and wood was widespread, as was spinning. Crafts included the manufacture of wooden utensils, spoons, salt cellars, ladles, and toys. The village of Krajné is known for its lace-making tradition. Cloth-making flourished, along with the production of linen and small textile goods, while Brezová pod Bradlom was renowned for leather processing (muni.cz).

The Myjava region is distinguished by its unique architecture. Typical dwellings, sometimes separated by distances of several kilometers, have been preserved to this day. Colloquially speaking, life here is lived literally among the Carpathian hills. From this seemingly inhospitable landscape emerged many notable figures: Zuzka Zguriška, who gave Myjava a pejorative literary label; Samuel Jurkovič and his grandson Dušan Jurkovič; Milan Rastislav Štefánik, born in Košariská; Ľudmila Podjavorinská from Bzince; and many others. Bošáca plum brandy has a tradition spanning more than 300 years, owing its exceptional quality to the unique microclimate of the Bošáca Valley. For art lovers, the region is also personified by the tanner Marián Lacko, known as Sváko Ragan (trencinregion.sk).

Kopanice folk songs are characterized by a tendency toward playful teasing, gentle irony, and mockery. Songs performed at collective festivities predominate, but long ballads, recruiting songs, and historical songs are also found. Prominent folk musicians included the lead fiddlers Samko Dudík from Myjava and Ján Petrucha from Priepasné (muni.cz).

The vegetation consists mainly of oak–beech and oak–hornbeam forests, with artificially planted conifer stands in some areas. The region also includes parts of the White Carpathians and Little Carpathians Protected Landscape Areas, which safeguard rich biodiversity and natural environments (myjava.sk).
