Ruže – symbol lásky, krásy a vášne

Hits: 326

Ruže k najznámejším okrasným rastlinám sveta, ale botanicky ide o mimoriadne zložitý rod. Ruže – Rosa sú evolučne zložitý rod z čeľade Rosaceae, rozšírený v miernom a subtropickom pásme severnej pologule s veľmi intenzívnou históriou. Ruža môže znamenať prírodný druh, kultúrny hybrid, alebo kultivar (Fougére-Danezan et al., Kew POWO, 2026). Väčšina druhov pochádza z Ázie, menší počet z Európy, Severnej Ameriky a severozápadnej Afriky (Wikipedia). Najstaršie fosílne doklady o existencii ruží pochádzajú z obdobia raných treťohôr, z paleocénu a eocénu (Wikipedia).

Z morfologického hľadiska sú ruže drevnaté kry, prípadne liany s pichliačmi – nie pravými tŕňmi, so striedavými, zvyčajne nepárno perovitými listami a s prirastenými prílistkami. Typický botanický kvet má päť kališných a päť korunných lístkov, mnoho tyčiniek a početné voľné piestiky uzavreté v češuli.

Veľmi dôležitý bol vstup čínskych opakovane kvitnúcich ruží do európskeho šľachtenia od konca 18. storočia, pretože práve ten otvoril cestu k moderným ružiam s remontantným kvitnutím (Nikola Tomljenovič, Ivan Pejič: Taxonomic Review of the Genus Rosa). Čínske ruže boli pestované už v staroveku a ich vstup do Európy v 18. storočí priniesol znak, ktorý zmenil celé šľachtenie. Moderné ruže vznikli zo zložitého šľachtenia európsko-stredomorských a východoázijských.

Medzi historické ruže patria krížence a varianty ruže keltskej, damašské ruže, machové ruže, čínske ruže, čajové ruže, bourbonské ruže, portlandské ruže, noisettky, remontantky, lambertky, pernetky (Wikipedia).

Rozmnožovať ich možno odrezkami, potápaním, delením a semenami (rhs.org.uk). Množenie ruží zároveň ukazuje, prečo je rozdiel medzi planou ružou a záhradným kultivarom taký dôležitý. Plané druhy možno množiť semenami, hoci semená často potrebujú stratifikáciu a potomstvo nemusí byť úplne jednotné.

Hrdza vytvára oranžové až hrdzavé výtrusné ložiská a vošky poškodzujú najmä mäkké mladé výhonky.

Najnovší výskum už pracuje s veľmi presnými genómami a so súborom genetickej rozmanitosti viacerých ruží. Ruže treba chápať ako výsledok dlhej evolúcie, domestifikácie a veľmi zložitej genetickej histórie (Marinus J. M. Smulders et al: In the name of the rose: a roadmap for rose research in the genome era).

V ich kvete sa stretáva estetika so šľachtením, v pichliačoch obrana rastliny, v šípkach ekologická hodnota a v genóme dlhá hybridizácie, polyploidie a domestifikácie. Práve preto ruže nepatria iba do záhonov a kytíc, ale aj do botaniky, evolučnej biológie, záhradníctva a kultúrnych dejín.

Roses are among the best-known ornamental plants in the world, but botanically they represent an exceptionally complex genus. Roses — Rosa — are an evolutionarily complex genus of the family Rosaceae, distributed across the temperate and subtropical zones of the Northern Hemisphere and marked by a very rich history. A rose may mean a wild botanical species, a cultivated hybrid, or a cultivar (Fougére-Danezan et al.; Kew POWO, 2026). Most species originate from Asia, with fewer from Europe, North America, and north-western Africa (Wikipedia). The oldest fossil evidence of roses dates back to the early Tertiary, specifically the Paleocene and Eocene (Wikipedia). The rose is among very ancient flowers. It probably originated in Central Asia and spread across almost the entire Northern Hemisphere (David Trinklein).

The cultivation of roses probably began in Asia about 5,000 years ago, and already in antiquity roses formed part of Chinese imperial gardens, the Egyptian world, Persian culture, and Roman symbolism (David Trinklein). They were also cultivated in Mesopotamia, Persia, and India. Roses probably reached ancient Greece through Alexander the Great. The ancient Romans were great admirers and growers of roses, followed later by Arabs and Turks (Wikipedia). Their domestication reflects aesthetic preferences as well as intercultural contacts between Asia and Europe (Hristina Nunes, Maria Graca Miguel). The rose gradually became a symbol of love, beauty, purity, passion, silence, and mystery (David Trinklein), as well as power and memory (Hristina Nunes, Maria Graca Miguel). The red rose is a well-known symbol of ardent, passionate love; the yellow rose of jealousy; the white rose of the suffering caused by rejected love, and so on. The naturally non-existent black rose has been regarded as a symbol of black magic, mysticism, noble hatred and death, but also of new beginnings. It is also one of the emblems of anarchism (Wikipedia).

From a morphological point of view, roses are woody shrubs, or sometimes lianas, with prickles — not true thorns — alternate, usually imparipinnate leaves, and adnate stipules. A typical botanical flower has five sepals and five petals, many stamens, and numerous free carpels enclosed in a hypanthium. The fruit is the rose hip, a fleshy false fruit containing achenes inside (worldfloraonline.org). Wild species also grow on forest edges, in shrublands, on slopes, and in hedges (kew.org). The rose is also a plant in which nature and culture — the garden — meet very clearly. Wild roses can be important for insects, birds, and small mammals. Simple flowers provide accessible pollen, the leaves are used by some solitary leafcutter bees, and rose hips provide food for birds and mammals in autumn and winter (kew.org). This applies especially to Rosa canina and Rosa laevigata (Hristina Nunes, Maria Graca Miguel). Garden roses, however, have often been selected for traits that humans find beautiful — large double flowers, unusual colours, and long flowering periods. This is why it makes sense in a garden to combine modern cultivars with simpler or botanical roses (kew.org). Rosa damascena and related groups are key plants for perfumery and rose water, while the rose hips of species such as Rosa canina and Rosa laevigata are important in food production and traditional medicine, and some species contain pharmacologically significant metabolites (Hristina Nunes, Maria Graca Miguel).

Genetically, roses are extremely diverse. Their diversity is linked to frequent hybridization between species, different numbers of chromosome sets, and, in some groups, an unusual mode of inheritance. This is why the genus Rosa is taxonomically complex, as is clearly visible, for example, in the so-called dog roses of the section Caninae. For the domestication of modern roses, key traits included repeat flowering, double flowers, and the transformation of stamens into petals. These traits are associated with genes that helped shape the appearance and flowering behaviour of today’s garden roses (Roberts et al.). Caninae are the so-called dog roses. They have a special mode of reproduction. During the formation of sex cells, some chromosomes behave normally, while others do not pair and are inherited unevenly. Put simply, the maternal side transmits a much larger share of genetic information than the pollen. This is one reason why these roses are so difficult to identify and, at the same time, so interesting to scientists (Radka Vozárová: Cytogenetická a genomická analýza genů pro ribozomální RNA u polyploidních rostlin).

The classification of the genus is based on morphological characters. The sections Pimpinellifoliae, Rosa, Caninae, Carolinae, Cinnamomeae, Synstylae, Indicae, Banksianae, Laevigatae, and Bracteatae are distinguished. The introduction of repeat-flowering Chinese roses into European breeding from the end of the 18th century was very important, because it opened the way to modern roses with remontant flowering (Nikola Tomljenovič, Ivan Pejič: Taxonomic Review of the Genus Rosa). Chinese roses had already been cultivated in antiquity, and their arrival in Europe in the 18th century brought a trait that changed the whole course of rose breeding. Modern roses arose from the complex breeding of Euro-Mediterranean and East Asian roses. Historically, roses are therefore divided into wild species, old garden roses, and modern roses. The symbolic beginning of modern roses is usually considered to be the year 1867, when the cultivar La France was introduced (G. Wang).

Today, rose breeding focuses on four major goals: repeat flowering, flower architecture, fragrance, and resistance. The cultivar Old Blush is a key historical and genetic reference point, because it links the old Chinese cultivation tradition with genes important for modern roses. This Chinese cultivar contributed to the development of modern repeat-flowering roses. Repeat flowering, flower doubleness, and the number of petals are all related to genes. The rose thus becomes a model in which we can observe how specific genomic changes create traits that humans perceived for centuries mainly aesthetically. Wild species, however, remain an irreplaceable source of alleles for resistance and adaptation. For example, Rosa laevigata is valued for its high resistance to aphids and very high resistance to black spot and powdery mildew, while wild East Asian roses expand the spectrum of fragrance and colour (Hibrand Saint-Oyant et al.). Rose petals contain mixtures of aromatic essential oils. Their amount varies greatly not only between species and cultivars, but also depending on weather and time of day. Flowers contain the highest amounts in the morning. The main fragrant components are the alcohols geraniol, nerol, and l-citronellol. A garden focused on growing roses for ornamental or research purposes is called a rosarium. The largest rosarium in the world today is the Europa-Rosarium in Sangerhausen near Leipzig (Wikipedia). Rosaria can also be found in the Botanical Garden in , in the Mlyňany Arboretum, and at Borová hora in Zvolen.

Historical roses include hybrids and variants of the Gallic rose, Damask roses, moss roses, Chinese roses, tea roses, Bourbon roses, Portland roses, Noisette roses, hybrid perpetuals, Lambert roses, and Pernetiana roses (Wikipedia). Modern roses include hybrid teas, which were bred from hybrid perpetuals and tea roses. Polyantha roses and polyantha hybrids are crosses between European hybrid perpetuals and the imported multiflora rose. Floribundas arose through hybridization of the two types mentioned above. Grandifloras are the result of crossing floribundas with hybrid teas. English roses were bred to satisfy a period nostalgia for the “good old days” — old European varieties — while also meeting modern requirements for repeat flowering and a wider colour range (Wikipedia).

In addition to origin, roses can also be divided according to habit and use in cultivation (Wikipedia). Bedding roses are usually grown in smaller gardens. Climbing roses have shoots several metres long. Groundcover roses grow in a creeping form, often producing flowers in rich clusters, and are usually derived from the field rose — Rosa arvensis. Shrub roses are vigorous, compact shrubs suitable for solitary planting, for example in parks and gardens. Miniature, or dwarf, roses are low-growing cultivars originally derived from a small natural variety of the Chinese rose (Rosa chinensis var. Minima). Standard roses are not a separate type; they can be produced from most of the preceding types by training a crown on a tall rootstock. By grafting a smaller climbing variety onto a standard rootstock, pendulous, so-called weeping roses are produced (Wikipedia).

For growing roses, the key factors are sun, drainage, and airiness of the stand. Most garden roses thrive in rich, moist, well-drained soil, in a sunny position, with a slightly acidic reaction, and with regular mulching and fertilization. Their nutritional requirements are high, because abundant flowering depletes nutrient reserves. Mulch made from well-rotted compost or manure is recommended, together with supplementary fertilization at the beginning of the season and, in remontant types, also after the first flush of flowering (rhs.org.uk). In autumn, plants should no longer be encouraged to produce soft new growth, so that they mature better before winter (ruze.cz). Instead of frequent surface watering, deep watering is recommended, ideally directed to the roots, for example by drip irrigation. Watering the leaves encourages the spread of diseases, especially black spot, so if overhead watering is used, it is better to do it in the morning or early afternoon, so that the leaves dry before evening (missouri.edu). To protect roses from severe frosts, it is advisable to mound soil or mature compost around them for winter. More delicate varieties can also be covered with conifer branches (Wikipedia).

Repeat-flowering roses are pruned mainly in late winter to early spring, while once-flowering old shrub roses are pruned after flowering (rhs.org.uk). Dead, damaged, weak, and crossing wood is removed to open the shrub and improve air circulation. Once-flowering historical and botanical roses are pruned rather after flowering, because they often bloom on older wood. Climbing roses need not only pruning but also training of the shoots — they do not twine by themselves like grapevines or beans, so they must be tied to a support (ruze.cz).

Roses can be propagated by cuttings, layering, division, and seed (rhs.org.uk). Rose propagation also shows why the difference between a wild rose and a garden cultivar is so important. Wild species can be propagated from seed, although the seeds often require stratification and the offspring may not be completely uniform. Cultivars, however, are most often maintained vegetatively — by cuttings, layering, division, or budding onto a rootstock. If propagated by seed, the traits of a particular cultivar could split into new combinations. Budding and grafting are therefore ways to preserve a particular colour, fragrance, flower shape, growth habit, and health characteristics of a variety (ruze.cz).

Rose diseases are often the result of a combination of a susceptible variety, humid weather, and poor air circulation. Black spot is among the most feared rose diseases. Dark spots appear on the leaves, which then turn yellow and fall prematurely, weakening the shrub (ruze.cz). It is caused by Diplocarpon rosae and is the most serious outdoor disease of garden roses (rhs.org.uk). Powdery mildew appears as a whitish coating and causes deformation of young leaves and buds (ruze.cz). It is caused by Podosphaera pannosa (rhs.org.uk). Rust forms orange to rust-coloured spore pustules, while aphids damage mainly soft young shoots. The best protection is not only spraying, but prevention: airy planting, watering at the roots, removing infected leaves, choosing more resistant varieties, and keeping the plant in good condition (ruze.cz). Rose rosette disease is also extremely serious; it is a viral disease transmitted by the mite Phyllocoptes fructiphilus and often leads to the death of the plant. Among pests, aphids and other small sap-sucking insects are common in horticultural practice (rhs.org.uk).

Genetic studies of roses have produced reference genomes and identified regions of DNA responsible for important traits. Later, research focused on the diversity of wild roses and on how today’s cultivated roses originated. The most recent research already works with very precise genomes and with the genetic diversity of multiple roses as a whole. It shows that traits such as repeat flowering, petal number, colour, and fragrance depend not only on small changes in DNA, but also on larger genomic rearrangements. The rose is therefore no longer studied only as an ornamental plant, but also as a model in which botany, evolutionary biology, the study of fragrance and colour, and modern breeding intersect. Roses should be understood as the result of long evolution, domestication, and a very complex genetic history (Marinus J. M. Smulders et al.: In the Name of the Rose: A Roadmap for Rose Research in the Genome Era). Some roses are critically endangered, for example Rosa arabica. At the level of cultivated roses, genetic erosion of old garden roses and local collections is also a problem. Conserving diversity therefore means not only protecting wild populations, but also maintaining ex situ collections in gene banks and botanical gardens (Hristina Nunes, Maria Graca Miguel).

Roses are exceptional and at the same time extremely complex plants. They are wild shrubs of the Northern Hemisphere, cultivated plants, symbols of love and power, sources of fragrance and rose hips, demanding garden woody plants, and modern genetic models. In their flowers, aesthetics meets breeding; in their prickles, plant defence; in their rose hips, ecological value; and in their genome, a long history of hybridization, polyploidy, and domestication. This is why roses belong not only in flower beds and bouquets, but also in botany, evolutionary biology, horticulture, and cultural history.

Orchideje – modelová čeľaď pre evolučnú botaniku

Čeľaď Orchidaceae patrí medzi najväčšie a najdiverzifikovanejšie čeľade krytosemenných rastlín. Z pohľadu systematiky je dnes stabilne podporovaný základný rámec „piatich podčeľadí“: Apostasioideae, Vanilloideae, Cypripedioideae, Orchidoideae, Epidendroideae. Evolučné datovanie kladie ich pôvod prevažne do neskorej kriedy (nih.gov).

Špecifické chemické signály a opeľovačov často vytvárajú silné reprodukčné bariéry medzi druhmi (mpg.de).

Hyfy prenikajú do buniek a vytvárajú špirály/klbká – pelotóny (researchgate.net).

The family Orchidaceae is among the largest and most diverse families of angiosperms. From a systematic perspective, the fundamental framework of “five subfamilies” is now well supported: Apostasioideae, Vanilloideae, Cypripedioideae, Orchidoideae, and Epidendroideae. Evolutionary dating places their origin predominantly in the Late Cretaceous (nih.gov). All extant orchids share a common ancestor that lived approximately 77 million years ago (springer.com).

Dating the origin of Orchidaceae was historically constrained by an extremely sparse fossil record. A breakthrough came with the discovery of a Miocene pollinarium attached to a fossilized pollinator preserved in amber (nih.gov). The question of the “cradle” of Orchidaceae remains open. One line of research has suggested an origin linked to Australia/Australasia, whereas more recent analyses point to Laurasia (nih.gov).

The subfamily Apostasioideae is typically associated with tropical East and Southeast Asia. Vanilloideae occur in tropical regions across multiple continents. Cypripedioideae range from temperate zones to the tropics. Orchidoideae are mainly temperate and terrestrial. Epidendroideae are predominantly tropical. Many members of the family are epiphytes (nih.gov).

From a biological perspective, orchids are exceptional mainly due to three features: a highly specialized flower; the production of extremely small seeds lacking nutrient reserves, which therefore require mycorrhizal fungi for germination; and the use of diverse pollination strategies (nih.gov). Orchid mycorrhizal symbioses are interpreted as examples of recruiting mycorrhizal partners from endophytic lineages that already possessed the ability to colonize roots. Numerous secondary shifts to different fungal taxa during orchid evolution have also been documented (chile.cl).

Most orchids (approximately 99%) have a monandrous flower, meaning they possess only one fertile stamen. A typical orchid flower includes the fusion of male and female parts into a single structure—the gynostemium (column), bilateral symmetry (zygomorphy), and a modified median petal—the labellum (lip), which plays a crucial role in contact with the pollinator (nih.gov). The gynostemium itself is an evolutionarily remarkable fused organ. Its origin and diversity are closely linked to specialization on specific pollinators and the formation of reproductive barriers between species (sciencedirect.com).

The development of orchid flowers is a subject of intensive research (nature.com). Orchids employ a wide range of reproductive strategies. Many orchids offer no reward but instead deceive pollinators. Although deception often results in fewer pollinated flowers, it can be advantageous because the plant does not invest energy in producing rewards. They may mimic nectar-producing flowers, emit false signals, or imitate female insects (karolinum.cz). Orchids may rely on cross-pollination, may be self-pollinating, or may be self-incompatible (genetically preventing self-fertilization) (annualreviews.org). Specific chemical signals and pollinator behaviors frequently create strong reproductive barriers between species (mpg.de).

Many orchids exhibit resupination—the rotation of the flower during development. The flower typically rotates about 180°, positioning the labellum downward so that it functions as a landing platform for pollinators (nih.gov). Not all species are fully resupinate; some display partial or no resupination (nih.gov).

Pollen is aggregated into pollinia, which together with additional structures form the pollinarium. This represents an adaptation ensuring the transfer of a large quantity of pollen in a single pollinator visit. This is related to the fact that orchids often produce enormous numbers of seeds—yet reproductive success is often either high or entirely absent (nih.gov).

Orchid seeds lack nutrient reserves and therefore require fungal partners for germination. The fungus forms intracellular structures called pelotons within root cells, from which the plant obtains nutrients. Hyphae penetrate the cells and form coiled aggregates—pelotons (researchgate.net). Orchid seeds lack endosperm and depend on mycorrhizal fungi for germination (frontiersin.org). Relationships with fungi are highly diverse. Some species are generalists, associating with multiple fungal partners; others are highly specialized. Some orchids have even completely lost photosynthesis and are fully dependent on fungi (mycoheterotrophy) (nih.gov).

Epiphytic orchids possess specialized adaptations:

Velamen – a multilayered root covering that rapidly absorbs water, protects against desiccation, and in some cases shields against UV radiation. This function has been gained and lost multiple times during orchid evolution in relation to epiphytic habit evolution (wiley.com).

Pseudobulbs – storage organs for water and nutrients that help the plant survive dry periods.

They often also exhibit thicker leaf cuticles or photosynthetic roots (oup.com).

Orchids occur almost everywhere: as epiphytes on trees, as terrestrial species in soil, and as lithophytes on rocks. The greatest species diversity occurs in the tropics, especially in the Neotropics. Islands frequently harbor numerous endemic species (nih.gov). Neotropical regions, particularly the Andes, and Southeast Asia exhibit the highest orchid species richness. Island regions such as New Guinea, Madagascar, and Micronesia have proven to be major hotspots of endemism and evolutionary uniqueness (doaj.org).

Orchids display an extraordinary capacity for hybridization—both between species within a genus and between genera. Hybridization plays an important role in evolutionary and taxonomic processes. Orchids possess the highest number of hybrids among plant families; more than 100,000 hybrids are currently known. Hybrids often exhibit improved traits: increased resistance to stress, drought, or disease, as well as novel colors, fragrances, shapes, or extended flowering periods (scielo.org.mx).

The family name Orchidaceae was derived from a temperate plant first described by the Greek philosopher Theophrastus around 300 BCE. He named it Orchis (orchis = testicle), referring to the characteristic shape of its underground tubers. In ancient Greece, these tubers were used as an aphrodisiac (Marta Bartošovičová).

From a conservation perspective, orchids are sensitive to habitat loss and fragmentation, climate change, and collection. They are also dependent on specific pollinators and soil fungi (nih.gov). Illegal collection from the wild represents a significant threat to populations, particularly of rare and endemic species, and is often not captured in official statistics or regulatory control (oup.com).

Žirovnice

Hits: 126

Dnes v ňom sídli múzeum s expozíciami o histórii regiónu, perletiarstve a výrobe gombíkov (czech-mountains.eu).

Žirovnice is a small town in the Pelhřimov District in South Bohemia, situated by the Žirovnička stream. The town has approximately 3,200 inhabitants (zirovnice.cz). The name of the town is probably derived from the Old Slavic word “žir”, meaning “nutritious” or “fat”, referring to the fertile surrounding land that attracted settlers as early as the Middle Ages. The first written mention of Žirovnice dates back to 1358 (vysocina.eu). The centre of the town is a castle built on the site of an old stone fortress (zirovnice.cz). In the 17th century, it was damaged during the Thirty Years‘ War and subsequently rebuilt by the House of Sternberg, who gave it a Renaissance and Baroque character (zirovnice.cz). In 1964, the castle was almost destroyed by a major fire, followed by extensive reconstruction. Today, it houses a museum with exhibitions on regional history, mother-of-pearl craftsmanship and button production (czech-mountains.eu). The castle complex also includes a granary and a former brewery from the 16th century, which operated as a brewery until 1865 (outdooractive.sk).

Since the 19th century, Žirovnice has become famous as a centre of mother-of-pearl craftsmanship and pearl button manufacturing. This craft was introduced by the entrepreneur Josef Žampach and gradually became one of the main sources of livelihood for the local population. Production developed almost until the mid-20th century and remains an important part of local identity and culture today (vysocina.eu). Žirovnice is also known for its cultural and social events, such as the Žirovnice Unicorn Festival – historical celebrations associated with the town’s coat of arms (zirovnice.cz). The actress Iva Janžurová was born in Žirovnice (Wikipedia).

Třeboň, mesto uprostred rybníkov

Hits: 144

Třeboň je historické mesto v južných Čechách so silnými rybníkárskymi a kultúrnymi tradíciami.

Třeboň is a historic town in South Bohemia with strong traditions of fish farming and culture. The town lies in the drainage basin of the Lužnice River, in an area rich in water bodies formed by artificially created ponds that have shaped the landscape and the local economy for centuries (britannica.com). The beginnings of settlement date back to the 12th century, when the first village was established in the area, gradually developing into today’s Třeboň (trebonsko.cz). The first recorded mention refers to the settlement of Wittingau (trebonsko.cz). The town developed culturally and economically mainly thanks to fish farming – the construction of an extensive network of ponds and water channels from as early as the 13th century (Wikipedia). In the Middle Ages and the modern period, Třeboň became an important centre of carp breeding (visitczechia.com).

Třeboň has many historical monuments. Třeboň State Chateau is a large Renaissance castle with a park in the historic town centre. Masaryk Square is the main square with beautiful burgher houses and a historic atmosphere. The old town hall tower offers views of the town (itrebon.cz). The J. K. Tyl Theatre is one of the oldest municipal theatres in the Czech Republic (trebonsko.cz). Few Czech towns can boast such an old and rich theatrical tradition as Třeboň. Its history began in the mid-16th century in the monastery. Theatre performances also took place at the castle (itrebon.cz). The House of Štěpánek of Netolice is a historic building dedicated to the tradition of fish farming (megaubytko.cz). In the historic part of the town there is a Gothic monastery, Baroque burgher houses on the square, and a Neo-Gothic brewery. In the middle of the square stands a Renaissance stone fountain from 1569 and a Baroque Marian column (trebonsko.cz). On the western side of the town is the Budějovice Gate from 1605–1611. On the eastern side is the Hradec Gate from the 1520s. On the southern side is the Svinenská Gate from the 14th century, behind which stands the Novohradská Gate from the 16th century (trebonsko.cz). The Schwarzenberg Tomb is located in an English park on the shore of the Svět Pond. In the chapel of the Neo-Gothic two-storey tomb there is an altar, and in the crypt lie 26 coffins with the remains of members of the family (itrebon.cz). In the centre there is also an exhibition of freshwater fish as part of the refreshment facility U světa (akvariaaobcerstveniusveta.cz).

The surroundings of Třeboň are characterised by hundreds of ponds interconnected by a network of channels, which have served and still serve aquaculture, water retention and biodiversity (Wikipedia). There are also many nature reserves in the area (travelking.sk). In the castle complex there is the House of Nature, a modern visitor exhibition that presents the natural and cultural heritage of the Třeboň region in an attractive way. It presents a landscape that has been shaped for centuries by human activity, especially by fish farmers, and at the same time emphasises the importance of its protection (dumprirody.cz).

Bathory, „Z pekla štěstí“ a „Tajemství staré bambitky 2“ (Wikipedia). Jindřichův Hradec má zachované úseky mestských hradieb a jedinú dochovanú bránu – Nežáreckú, ktorá dodnes nesie renesančné prvky a hodinový stroj z roku 1879.

Jindřichův Hradec is a town in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, located approximately 43 km northeast of České Budějovice on the Nežárka River. With a population of around 21,000, it is an important cultural and historical center of the region. The first written mention of Jindřichův Hradec dates back to 1220, when a Gothic castle was built on the site of an earlier Slavic hillfort by Jindřich I of the Vítkovci family, the founder of the Lords of Hradec. In the mid-13th century, a settlement arose near the castle and was named after its founder. The current name Jindřichův Hradec has been documented since 1410. In the 16th century, during the rule of the last members of the Lords of Hradec, the town reached the peak of its development. Houses and the castle were rebuilt from Gothic to Renaissance style, and the town expanded beyond its fortifications. After the Thirty Years‘ War, in 1654, Jindřichův Hradec was the second largest town in the Kingdom of Bohemia, with 405 houses. Later, however, it lost its political importance, and by the end of the 17th century it also experienced economic decline. The historic center of Jindřichův Hradec is a designated urban conservation area, encompassing Peace Square with adjacent streets and the castle. The dominant features of the square include the former Gothic town hall, rebuilt several times, and the Langer House, originally a Gothic building later remodeled in the Renaissance style (Wikipedia).

The Jindřichův Hradec Castle and Château is the third largest castle complex in the Czech Republic, after Prague Castle and the château in Český Krumlov. It covers an area of nearly 3 hectares and offers visitors tours of valuable interiors and historical art artifacts (jindrichuvhradec.cz). The château is a rebuilt castle located at the confluence of the Nežárka River and the Hamerský Stream and is designated a National Cultural Monument (Wikipedia). The complex originated on the site of a Slavic hillfort documented as early as the 10th century as part of the border defense system of the Bohemian Principality (jindrichuvhradec.cz). The castle was probably founded by Přemysl Otakar in the first half of the 13th century. In the 18th century, the building suffered fire damage. Extensive reconstruction took place only in the first quarter of the 20th century under the direction of Count Eugen Černín. Today, the château forms a complex that also includes a castle brewery, a mill, tannery buildings, and structures of a hydroelectric power plant. The château frequently appears in films, such as Bathory, Z pekla štěstí, and Tajemství staré bambitky 2 (Wikipedia). Jindřichův Hradec has preserved sections of its town walls and the only surviving gate – the Nežárka Gate, which still features Renaissance elements and a clock mechanism from 1879. The château also contains one of the first specially designed rooms for theatrical performances in Bohemia, located in the Spanish Wing and dating from the mid-17th century. Original rondels are also preserved here – Renaissance music pavilions used for social events (loudavymkrokem.cz).

The Museum of the Jindřichův Hradec Region is housed in a Renaissance building that once served as a Jesuit seminary. Founded in 1882, it is among the oldest regional museums in Bohemia. Its most famous exhibit is the Krýza Nativity Scene, the largest mechanical nativity scene in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records (Wikipedia ENG). Created by Tomáš Krýza, it contains more than 1,300 figurines, 133 of which are movable. This unique work is displayed in the Museum of the Jindřichův Hradec Region (Wikipedia). The Church of St. John the Baptist is originally a Gothic church with an adjoining Minorite monastery, later used as a hospital. The Church of St. Mary Magdalene is located in the historic center of the town. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is known for its 68.3-meter-high tower, accessible to the public, and for the 15th meridian passing through the church courtyard (Wikipedia ENG).

The town lies at the confluence of the Nežárka River and the Hamerský Stream, near Vajgar Pond with an area of 49 hectares, founded in 1399. The surroundings of Jindřichův Hradec are rich in ponds and forests, providing ideal conditions for tourism and recreation (Wikipedia). Near the town is the Česká Kanada Nature Reserve, known for its forests, lakes, and narrow-gauge railway, which serves as a tourist attraction (visitczechia.com). Personalities associated with the town include politician Vladimír Špidla, rower Václav Chalupa, footballer Karel Poborský, ice hockey players Aleš Kotalík and Zbyněk Michálek (Wikipedia ENG), František II Rákoczi – leader of the Hungarian uprising in the 18th century, philosopher and writer Stanislav Komárek, stocking maker Tomáš Krýza, painter Jiří Kaucký, writer Josef B. Nežárecký, pianist, conductor and choirmaster Kurt Adler, and poet Lubor Kasal (Wikipedia).

The Museum of Photography and Modern Visual Media in Jindřichův Hradec is a cultural institution dedicated to the documentation, presentation, and research of photography and related visual media (mfmom.cz). It is located in the historic building of the former Jesuit boarding school in the centre of Jindřichův Hradec (kudznudy.cz), specifically at Kostelní 20, Jindřichův Hradec, Czech Republic (wanderlog.com). The museum documents the development of photographic media from the invention of photography to the present day. It collects and preserves representative examples such as photographic plates, film, magnetic and optical image records, printed photographs, and optical and electronic imaging (mfmom.cz). It presents exhibitions of works by Czech and international photographers, including important figures from the history of photography as well as contemporary artists (kudznudy.cz). Josef Dohnal states that the museum of photography was an important project for Czech photographic culture, but it faced significant challenges in the areas of management, funding, and relations with local authorities. The importance of this institution lay in preserving photographic heritage and presenting its cultural significance at the national level (Dohnal).
