V 2. polovici 13. storočia mesto kolonizovali nemci (Wirth, Tichý). V 13. storočí sa stal slobodným kráľovským mestom. V roku 1567 tu bolo 780 domov. V roku 1864 vznikla svetoznáma továreň na piana Antonín Petrof. V 80-tych rokoch 19. storočia bolo postavené Klicperove divadlo (wikipedia.cz).
