Hits: 124

Prezentácia uvádzala napríklad použitie dronov pri zobrazovaní zelene a verejného priestoru, podujatí v meste, kultúrnych akcií či rozvojových projektov. Dronové zábery plnia funkciu atraktívneho a presného vizuálneho média, ktoré dokáže zachytiť priestorové vzťahy, rozsah územia a dynamiku mestského prostredia spôsobom, aký bežné pozemné snímkovanie neposkytuje.

Michalov202602

Ďalšou aplikačnou oblasťou je kontrola stavu infraštruktúry a stavieb. Prezentácia uvádzala detekciu tepelných a záplavových únikov, identifikáciu problémových fasád, striech a okien, ako aj monitoring ťažko dostupných objektov. Dôležitou výhodou je bezpečnosť a efektívnosť takéhoto riešenia, pretože dron dokáže sprístupniť miesta, ktoré by inak vyžadovali náročnejšie technické zásahy alebo rizikové manuálne obhliadky. Termovízne snímky zároveň umožňujú presnejšie vyhodnocovanie technického stavu objektov a podporujú prevenciu porúch či znižovanie energetických strát.

Vstupnými údajmi do tejto transformácie sú GPS súradnice drona prevedené do systému ETRS89, relatívna výška dronu, azimutové natočenie dronu a ohnisková vzdialenosť kamery.

Patrí sem vzťah medzi rozsahom územia a výškou letu drona, dĺžka záznamu, množstvo vlícovacích bodov, kolmý pohľad kamery a správne umiestenie týchto bodov.

The presentation focused on the use of unmanned aerial systems (UAVs) as tools for the collection, processing, and analysis of spatial data in the urban environment. It demonstrated that drones are not only a means of visual documentation but also an integral part of analytical and decision-making processes. In , they are used to create imagery and mapping materials, for operational monitoring of situations in the field, and for specialised analytical tasks combining imagery, thermal imaging, machine learning, and GIS processing. At the beginning of the presentation, the equipment used by the city was introduced. It included several types of drones with different characteristics and sensors, ranging from smaller devices equipped with conventional RGB sensors to more powerful platforms featuring dual sensors or the possibility of integrating additional equipment. This makes it possible to respond to a wide variety of tasks, from promotional imagery to advanced analytical applications. The presentation provided examples of drone use for visualising greenery and public spaces, urban events, cultural activities, and development projects. Drone imagery serves as an attractive and accurate visual medium capable of capturing spatial relationships, the extent of an area, and the dynamics of the urban environment in ways that conventional ground-based photography cannot provide.

A significant part of the presentation addressed the use of UAVs for monitoring high-risk events. This activity is carried out in cooperation with the Municipal Police and is based on providing patrol units with a real-time aerial overview. Drones make it possible to monitor the movement of large crowds, rapidly support crowd coordination, identify risk zones, and dispatch patrols when problematic situations arise. Their deployment also includes nighttime thermal monitoring under reduced visibility, monitoring traffic and evacuation routes, and helping to prevent traffic congestion during larger gatherings. In this context, the presentation showed UAVs not only as analytical tools but also as operational components of urban security management. Another field of application is the inspection of infrastructure and buildings. The presentation described the detection of thermal anomalies and water leaks, the identification of problematic façades, roofs, and windows, as well as the monitoring of hard-to-reach structures. One of the major advantages of this approach is its safety and efficiency, as drones can provide access to locations that would otherwise require more demanding technical interventions or risky manual inspections. Thermal imagery also enables more accurate assessment of the technical condition of structures and supports both failure prevention and the reduction of energy losses.

The presentation also demonstrated the broader use of UAVs for collecting analytical data about the urban environment. Examples included the biological control of mosquitoes, where data are collected to support interventions and identify flood-prone polygons, as well as tree management and the creation of index maps, particularly NDVI maps, including the identification of stressed trees and problematic crowns. Particular attention was given to urban heat islands, for which thermal maps are produced, automated flight missions are used, and actual results following the installation of green roofs are evaluated. This part of the presentation showed that UAVs contribute to a wide range of urban management topics, from public health to climate adaptation and green infrastructure management. The core of the presentation, however, focused on monitoring transport nodes and the advanced analysis of traffic behaviour. This analytical workflow was presented as a process involving vehicle detection, speed calculation, estimation of collision probability, and analysis of stopping behaviour. In addition to measuring traffic intensity, the approach represents a more comprehensive model for processing vehicle movements and potentially hazardous situations in urban space.

Importantly, the presentation also described the actual operational workflow. Monitoring requests are submitted through the Helpdesk service (JitBit), where the required recording duration and the area to be covered are defined. Flight preparation follows, including checking the weather forecast, verifying compliance with flight restrictions and geozones, and handling routine logistics such as batteries and memory cards. The flight itself must comply with operational safety requirements, the VLOS principle (maintaining the drone within direct visual line of sight), and energy resource management. This workflow demonstrates that the analytical value of the data begins already at the stage of carefully planned data collection. For vehicle detection, the presentation also identified the specific technological solution used for data processing. Detection is performed using the Ultralytics library, which employs the YOLO (You Only Look Once) algorithm. For top-down drone imagery, a model trained specifically for this type of input is used, called Object-Detection-From-Drone-For-Surveillance. This means that the workflow does not rely merely on a general machine-learning application but on a model specifically adapted to surveillance imagery acquired from UAVs. The result is more reliable vehicle identification in traffic situations in which objects appear at different orientations and under varying traffic densities.

The presentation also showed that the original example script provided in the Ultralytics documentation was further extended to meet the requirements of the specific analytical task. Functionality was added to draw and label areas of interest as polygons on the image, store the complete vehicle trajectory from the first to the final detection, summarise the number of vehicles first detected in one polygon and last detected in another, and export the resulting counts of movements between polygons to a CSV file. This is a particularly important aspect because it demonstrates a shift from simple object detection towards the analysis of trajectories, movement relationships, and directional traffic flows. A particularly interesting part of the presentation concerned the calculation of vehicle speeds. This requires the imagery to be captured with the camera pointing vertically downward so that object positions can be reliably transformed from the two-dimensional image into real-world space. The presentation explained that a point on the two-dimensional camera “canvas” is back-transformed into 3D space, where real-world coordinates can be used. The input data for this transformation include the drone’s GPS coordinates converted into the ETRS89 coordinate system, the drone’s relative altitude, its azimuth orientation, and the focal length of the camera. These parameters are available in the drone telemetry, for example in an accompanying .srt metadata file.

In the next step, an inverse transformation based on the so-called LookAt matrix is used to project a point from the 2D image into 3D space. Since the result of this transformation is a line containing an infinite number of points, the relevant point is selected as the one whose third coordinate is zero, corresponding to a point lying on the observed surface. All calculations are performed in the Cartesian ETRS89 coordinate system. By using the centre of the bounding box surrounding the detected vehicle, it is therefore possible to obtain real-world coordinates of the vehicle in each frame. Speed is then calculated as the ratio between the distance travelled and elapsed time. To improve accuracy, data from frames at times T and T−5 are used. This therefore represents a relatively sophisticated transition from image-based detection to a spatially referenced movement model. Another analytical layer concerns collision probability. The presentation emphasised that this is not represented by a single simple value, but forms part of a wider set of risk indicators derived from object trajectories, speed, direction of movement, and conflict points. One of the indicators used for interpretation is TTC (Time to Collision), where values below 1.5 seconds indicate high risk, values between 1.5 and 3 seconds indicate medium risk, and values above 3 seconds indicate low risk. This approach makes it possible to analyse not only actual collision situations, but also potential conflicts that are important for assessing the safety of intersections and transport nodes.

This layer is complemented by an analysis of stopping behaviour, represented by the DRAC indicator (Deceleration Rate to Avoid Crash). This value expresses the degree of deceleration that a vehicle must apply in order to avoid a collision. A low DRAC value indicates a safe situation, while a high value indicates the need for hard braking. If DRAC exceeds the vehicle’s braking capability, the situation can already be considered a collision scenario. This indicator shifts traffic analysis from simple object counting towards a deeper assessment of risk dynamics and the behaviour of road users. The presentation also identified factors affecting the quality of the results. These include the relationship between the size of the monitored area and the drone’s flight altitude, recording duration, the number of ground control points, a vertically oriented camera view, and the correct placement of these control points. This demonstrates that the resulting accuracy and usability of the analyses depend not only on the algorithms themselves but also on the quality of the entire data workflow, from data acquisition through georeferencing to interpretation.

The presentation concluded with visions for future development. Challenges related to the integration of drones into urban systems were discussed, including integration with municipal camera systems and the use of technologies such as DJI Dock, an automated drone station that could also enable continuous monitoring. The objective is to demonstrate how drones can contribute to the more efficient, safer, and more sustainable operation of a modern city. In this sense, the presentation portrayed UAVs both as a technical mapping tool and as part of an emerging analytical and operational urban infrastructure capable of integrating monitoring, geospatial data, automated analytics, and decision support.

Miriam Janušková – Hodnotenie kontinentality podnebia vo vzťahu k radiačným faktorom

Hits: 297

Výpočet prebieha porovnaním relatívnych priebehov týchto dvoch veličín v kľúčových bodoch roka, napríklad pri 25 %, 50 % a 75 % amplitúdy, pričom výsledná hodnota predstavuje priemer viacerých čiastkových odchýlok.

Climate is not merely a summary of temperatures and precipitation. It is the result of a complex system of processes occurring within the atmosphere, at the Earth’s surface and through interactions between them. One of the key factors shaping this system is solar radiation. Its amount, distribution and interaction with the surface determine the fundamental characteristics of climate, including its continental or oceanic nature. Climatic continentality expresses the extent to which a climate is influenced by inland conditions rather than by oceanic effects. In practice, it is manifested primarily through greater temperature differences between summer and winter and higher weather variability. In Central Europe, including Slovakia, continentality is a highly dynamic characteristic influenced not only by geographical location but also by local factors. Radiation factors are among the most significant of these.

Solar radiation is the primary source of energy for the Earth’s climate system. Its intensity depends on several variables, including latitude, season, cloud cover and surface properties such as albedo and vegetation cover. These factors subsequently affect the temperature regime of the landscape and, consequently, its climatic character. Analysing the relationship between continentality and radiation factors provides a better understanding of how energy is distributed across the landscape and how it influences climatic processes. It also provides tools for identifying areas that are more susceptible to extremes, such as substantial temperature fluctuations or overheating. From a methodological perspective, this involves combining climatological data with spatial analyses. Long-term time series of meteorological measurements are used and subsequently linked with information about radiation conditions. GIS technologies play an important role in this process by making it possible to integrate, analyse and visualise these data spatially.

The integration of climatology and geoinformatics therefore represents a powerful tool for both understanding and managing climatic processes within the landscape. It is relevant not only to scientific research but also as a practical basis for decision-making that directly affects residents‘ quality of life. Ultimately, it is about understanding one fundamental principle: climate is the result of global processes as well as local interactions between energy, the surface and space. The relationship between radiation factors and continentality is also reflected in the time lag between the annual courses of radiation and temperature, which represents the differing characteristics of oceanic and inland regions. The radiation balance influences temperature amplitude, while altitude also plays an important role, as the new method for evaluating continentality is sensitive to it. In the presented approach, extraterrestrial solar radiation and its seasonal course throughout the year constitute the principal radiation component.

An important methodological advance in the evaluation of continentality is the use of a new approach based on comparing the annual courses of air temperature and extraterrestrial solar radiation. This is not merely a general assessment of the relationship between climate and radiation, but a new method for measuring climatic continentality in relation to radiation factors. The approach is based on the assumption that a time lag exists between the maximum level of radiation and the maximum temperature, and that this lag is characteristic of a particular area. This principle forms the basis of the E index, which quantifies continentality as the time shift, expressed in days, between the annual courses of radiation and temperature. Expressing continentality in days is one of the method’s principal contributions, as it makes it possible to describe climatic differences as a characteristic that can be interpreted in temporal terms.

The calculation is performed by comparing the relative annual courses of the two variables at key points, such as 25%, 50% and 75% of their amplitudes. The resulting value represents the average of several partial deviations. The method was illustrated using specific locations with differing oceanic and continental regimes, as well as examples from tropical and extratropical zones. These examples demonstrate the different time lags between the annual courses of radiation and temperature. Such comparisons confirm that the E index can sensitively distinguish between coastal and inland climate types. The practical results indicate that continentality increases with distance from the ocean, with the relationship following an approximately logarithmic pattern. Spatial analyses performed in a GIS environment use climatic-data interpolation, specifically the Ordinary Kriging method, which accounts for the spatial autocorrelation of measurements.

When processing data for Europe, adjacent stations in Russia were also included to represent the eastern boundary more accurately, while island areas were interpolated separately. An analysis along the 50th parallel, for example, demonstrates a very strong relationship between the E index value and distance from the coastline (R² ≈ 0.88). This confirms the dominant influence of oceanic climate regulation in coastal regions. This approach makes it possible to produce continuous continentality maps for the entirety of Europe or even the world while accounting for specific geographical conditions, including island territories and peripheral regions. The interpolated raster was subsequently converted into polygons using the Equal Interval classification method, enabling a clearer spatial interpretation of the results.

Another important conclusion is that the new E index does not operate in isolation but shows a greater degree of agreement with the ombric continentality index. At the same time, it appears to be particularly applicable outside the tropical zone—that is, in areas located beyond the tropics—where the seasonal courses of radiation and temperature allow this type of comparison to be interpreted more reliably. The maps reveal a gradient of continentality, extending from the oceanic western part of Europe, characterised by low values, to the markedly continental regions of Eastern Europe and the interior of Asia. This spatial pattern confirms that continentality is not merely a function of geographical location but also the result of complex interactions between radiation and atmospheric circulation factors. The new method is also sensitive to local conditions, including altitude, terrain orientation, the windward and leeward sides of mountain ranges and the effects of warm and cold ocean currents. It can therefore represent finer spatial differences in climatic characteristics more accurately.

Uprednostňujú úrodnú, dobre priepustnú pôdu a slnko až polotieň, pričom rizikové sú extrémy – premokrenie, veľmi suché stanovištia a hlboký tieň (rhs.org.uk). Narcissus poeticus pochádza z východnej strednej a južnej Európy. Narcissus pseudonarcissus zo západnej Európy, Narcissus tazetta z Kanárskych ostrovov, Stredomoria až Pakistanu, juhovýchodnej Číny až Japonska. Narcissus bulbocodium z juhozápadnom Francúzsku až Pyrenejského polostrova. Narcissus triandrus z Pyrenejského polostrova a severozápadného Francúzska. Narcissus serotinus z Pyrenejského polostrova, Baleárov a západného Maroka, Narcissus nevadensis z južného Španielska.

Dlhodobé šľachtenie narcisov viedlo k vzniku tisícok odrôd. rodu Narcissus vykazujú výnimočnú rozmanitosť a pohlavnú polymorfiu, najmä vo veľkosti korunky a dĺžke kvetnej rúrky, čo súvisí so skupinami opeľovačov. Rozlišujú sa tri hlavné kvetné typy: daffodil, paperwhite, triandrus. Typ „daffodil“ má krátku, širokú alebo silne lievikovitú rúrku prechádzajúcu do veľkej predĺženej korunky. Typ „paperwhite“ má pomerne dlhú a úzku rúrku a krátku, plytkú, roztvorenú korunku. Typ „triandrus“ kombinuje znaky oboch: dlhú úzku rúrku a dobre vyvinutú zvonkovitú korunku, pričom kvety sú previsnuté (Wikipedia).

V prírode narcisty trpia na nadmerný zber, stratu biotopov (Gordon R. Hanks). Z hľadiska zdravia, cibule narcisov po požití spôsobujú intoxikácie s týmito príznakmi: nauzea, vracanie, hnačky, bolesti brucha (Kohei et all).

The genus Narcissus (Amaryllidaceae) comprises bulbous geophytes with a seasonal cycle of growth and dormancy. Daffodils are characterized by a corona (paracorolla) – a “cup” or “trumpet” in the center of the flower – which distinguishes them from most other members of the Amaryllidaceae. In terms of diversity, Narcissus is a typically Mediterranean genus, with its center of species richness on the Iberian Peninsula. Some lineages originated in China and Japan (Gordon R. Hanks), where they were introduced before the 10th century (Wikipedia). The distribution of the genus also includes North African lineages (Gordon R. Hanks).

Daffodils have been known since antiquity. The genus originated during the late Oligocene to early Miocene on the Iberian Peninsula and in adjacent regions of southwestern Europe. The exact origin of the name “Narcissus” is unknown; it is often associated with the Greek word narkō, meaning to numb or benumb, and with the myth of the youth Narcissus, who fell in love with his own reflection. In Wales, daffodils are the national flower; in many countries, they symbolize the fight against cancer, while in some cultures they represent happiness and prosperity (Wikipedia). In East Asian cultural traditions, the daffodil is interpreted as a symbol of prosperity and good fortune (Downing).

Taxonomically, the genus Narcissus is complex due to natural hybridization, polyploidization, and parallel evolution of traits. Many species are of hybrid origin (B. J. M. Zonneveld). The genus did not evolve linearly; frequent interspecific crossing and backcrossing (introgression) have occurred. As a result, transitional forms exist and species boundaries are often unclear (Gordon R. Hanks).

Daffodils exhibit pronounced seasonality. After flowering, rapid senescence of leaves follows, succeeded by a summer subterranean phase during which intensive initiation and differentiation of primordia occur within the bulb. The bulb is composed of storage scales and bears adventitious roots at its base. The growth system may produce lateral offsets, forming the basis of vegetative propagation and bulb clustering. Leaves are typically basal and strap-shaped. The flowering stem is leafless, and the flower bud is enclosed in a spathe that dries and splits before blooming. Flower structure: two whorls of three tepals, a hypanthium (floral tube), two whorls of three stamens, and an inferior tricarpellate ovary with numerous ovules in three locules. Between the perianth and stamens lies the corona, which may range from cup-shaped to trumpet-shaped. The fruit is a capsule; seeds are dark and rounded. In natural populations, pollination success is often low under cold spring conditions (Gordon R. Hanks). Daffodils can be propagated vegetatively by division of offsets and generatively by seeds (Gordon R. Hanks). For garden cultivation, ideal conditions include fertile, well-drained soil without prolonged waterlogging, and full sun to partial shade (rhs.org.uk), with moisture during active growth and dryness during dormancy (Gordon R. Hanks). Planting is most effective in early autumn in temperate regions (rhs.org.uk).

Natural habitats include grasslands, shrublands, forest margins, riverbanks, and rock crevices from lowlands to mountains. Many species share a geophytic strategy with spring growth and a summer “dry” phase, representing adaptation to seasonal precipitation and temperature regimes of the Mediterranean climate (Gordon R. Hanks). They prefer fertile, well-drained soils and sunny to semi-shaded sites, while extremes such as waterlogging, very dry habitats, and deep shade are unfavorable (rhs.org.uk). Narcissus poeticus originates from eastern central and southern Europe; Narcissus pseudonarcissus from western Europe; Narcissus tazetta from the Canary Islands, the Mediterranean to Pakistan, and southeastern China to Japan; Narcissus bulbocodium from southwestern France to the Iberian Peninsula; Narcissus triandrus from the Iberian Peninsula and northwestern France; Narcissus serotinus from the Iberian Peninsula, the Balearic Islands, and western Morocco; and Narcissus nevadensis from southern Spain. In the European context, daffodils are an icon of spring and ornamental culture (rhs.org.uk). In Slovakia, the species Narcissus poeticus occurs naturally, associated with moist meadow and submontane habitats in the Veľká Fatra, Strážovské vrchy, and the Slovak Karst (Goliašová et al.).

Long-term breeding of daffodils has resulted in thousands of cultivars. Flowers of the genus Narcissus exhibit remarkable diversity and sexual polymorphism, particularly in the size of the corona and the length of the floral tube, which are related to pollinator groups. Three main flower types are distinguished: daffodil, paperwhite, and triandrus. The “daffodil” type has a short, broad or strongly funnel-shaped tube transitioning into a large elongated corona. The “paperwhite” type has a relatively long, narrow tube and a short, shallow, spreading corona. The “triandrus” type combines features of both: a long narrow tube and a well-developed bell-shaped corona, with nodding flowers (Wikipedia).

In nature, daffodils are threatened by overharvesting and habitat loss (Gordon R. Hanks). From a health perspective, ingestion of daffodil bulbs causes intoxication with symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain (Kohei et al.). Contact dermatitis is also known and is associated with calcium oxalate (Kevin P. Lee et al.). Narcissus is a potential source of galantamine for neuropharmacological applications (B. J. M. Zonneveld). Despite their toxicity, daffodils have been used in traditional medicine for treating tumors, wound healing, and as an emetic. Galantamine is used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease because it inhibits acetylcholinesterase and acts on the central nervous system (Wikipedia).

Lekná – starodávne rastliny

Hits: 444

predstavujú jednu z najstarších línií kvitnúcich rastlín, čo z nich robí dôležitý model pre štúdium evolúcie kvetov a prechod medzi primitívnymi a pokročilejšími krytosemennými rastlinami (Kerry A. Ford et all).

Lekná – rody Nymphaea a Nuphar medzi močiarne rastliny s plávajúcimi listami a nápadnými kvetmi. Klimatické zmeny, výrazné zmeny teplôt a výšky vodných hladín narúšajú vývoj kvitnutia a rozmnožovania lekien (Wikipedia).

V strednej Európe sú bežné druhy: Nymphaea alba, Nuphar lutea, Nymphaea candida a Nuphar pumila. Lekná patria do čeľade Nymphaeaceae.

Vyhovuje im dostatok slnečného žiarenia a teplá . Potrebujú minimálne 4 – 6 hodín priameho slnka denne (upjs.sk). Substrát musí byť bohatý na živiny. pH vody je ideálne mierne kyslé až zásadité, okolo 6 – 7. Stabilné chemické podmienky, bez prudkých kolísaní prispievajú k hojnému kvitnutiu. Menším druhom Nymphaea candida, Nymphaea pumila vyhovuje chladnejšia voda a vyššia nadmorská výška (pfaf.org).

Nymphaea alba malo významný duchovný a liečivý charakter v starovekom Egypte (Wikipedia). V európskej tradícii sú lekná symbolom čistoty a nevinnosti. Kultivar Nymphaea alba rosea – červené lekno z Fagertärnu – bolo dokonca takmer vyhubené kvôli zberu (Wikipedia). Červené listy žltého lekna sú heraldickým symbolom Frízie (Holandsko) a dokonca sa motív lekna objavuje v katedrálnej architektúre (Bristol, Westminster) (Wikipedia).

Listy lekien tlmia a tým regulujú teplotu vody, zároveň poskytnú úkryt obojživelníkom, rybám i hmyzu. Niektoré druhy lekna majú gastronomický význam, napr. hľuzy a semená sú jedlé. Extrakty z lekna sa tradične využívali v ľudovom liečiteľstve, majú sedatívne či mierne halucinogénne účinky (gardenersworld.com).

Water lilies represent one of the oldest lineages of flowering plants, making them an important model for studying the evolution of flowers and the transition between primitive and more advanced angiosperms (Kerry A. Ford et al.). Water lilies are typical hydrophytes with floating leaves, adapted through the reduction of mechanical tissues, a high proportion of parenchyma, and the ability to tolerate hypoxic sediments. Photosynthesis takes place primarily in leaves floating on the water surface.

They reproduce through entomophily, involving beetles, flies, and bees. Protogyny is common – the stigma matures before the pollen, which reduces the likelihood of self-pollination. Water lilies stabilize sediments and provide microhabitats, playing an important role in food chains.

Water lilies – genera Nymphaea and Nuphar – are aquatic plants with floating leaves and conspicuous flowers. They provide ecological services such as shading and shelter for aquatic organisms (gardenersworld.com). They are threatened by habitat degradation and pollution (Wikipedia). Deforestation, wetland drainage, river regulation, and dam construction all negatively affect water lilies. Eutrophication can lead to excessive growth of algae and cyanobacteria, which thicken water bodies and cover floating leaves. Chemical pollution directly damages plants or reduces water quality. The introduction of non-native species also contributes to their decline. Climate change, including fluctuations in temperature and water levels, disrupts flowering and reproduction cycles (Wikipedia).

In Central Europe, common species include Nymphaea alba, Nuphar lutea, Nymphaea candida, and Nuphar pumila. Water lilies belong to the family Nymphaeaceae. The genus Nymphaea contains more than 50 species, and related taxa include Nymphoides peltata (Wikipedia). In tropical regions, species such as Nymphaea lotus and Nymphaea japonica occur.

Water lilies are characterized by an underground rhizome from which roots and leaves emerge (Wikipedia). They overwinter in the form of this rhizome. In spring, new leaves and flowering stems develop from rhizome buds. The shoots produce leaves that gradually float to the surface. After flowering, a water fruit develops containing floating seeds that disperse through water.

Water lilies can also reproduce vegetatively by rhizome division. They prefer standing or slowly flowing freshwater habitats such as lakes, pools, oxbow lakes, slow channels, and ponds with stable water levels. They favor deeper water, with an optimal depth of approximately 0.7–2.5 m (gardenersworld.com). They require sufficient sunlight and warm water, with at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily (upjs.sk). The substrate should be nutrient-rich. The optimal water pH is slightly acidic to neutral, around 6–7. Stable chemical conditions without abrupt fluctuations support abundant flowering. Smaller species such as Nymphaea candida and Nymphaea pumila prefer cooler water and higher altitudes (pfaf.org).

Nymphaea alba occurs throughout Europe, parts of North Africa, and Asia from the Middle East to the western Himalayas (kew.org). Nuphar lutea is distributed from the Atlantic across Europe to Siberia and North Africa. Outside their native range, water lilies have been introduced as ornamental plants and have spread to North America and Oceania. Nymphaea alba and Nuphar lutea are native species in Central Europe, occurring mainly in lowland areas such as the Danubian and Eastern Slovak Lowlands and in river basins (Wikipedia). Nymphaea candida and Nymphaea pumila are very rare or historically recorded in Slovakia (kew.org).

Water lilies have appeared in the cultures of many civilizations. Nymphaea alba had spiritual and medicinal significance in ancient Egypt (Wikipedia). In European tradition, water lilies symbolize purity and innocence. The cultivar Nymphaea alba ‘rosea‘ – the red water lily from Fagertärn – was nearly exterminated due to overcollection (Wikipedia). The red leaves of the yellow water lily are a heraldic symbol of Friesland (Netherlands), and water lily motifs appear in cathedral architecture (Bristol, Westminster) (Wikipedia).

Water lily leaves reduce light penetration and regulate water temperature while providing shelter for amphibians, fish, and insects. Some species have gastronomic value, as their tubers and seeds are edible. Extracts from water lilies have traditionally been used in folk medicine and may have sedative or mildly hallucinogenic effects (gardenersworld.com).
