Pla­ties resem­ble sword­tails but are slight­ly smal­ler, giving an ove­rall more deli­ca­te appe­a­ran­ce. The spe­cies Macu­la­tus and Hel­le­ri occa­si­onal­ly crossb­re­ed, alt­hough it is rare. They are cal­mer com­pa­red to sword­tails, and fema­les usu­al­ly are­n’t can­ni­ba­lis­tic towards the­ir own offs­pring, alt­hough using a bre­e­ding box can be more effec­ti­ve.
