Bombardovanie Prahy 14. 2. 1945 zničilo nemecké skleníky a české poškodilo.

V tropických skleníkoch dominujú vo vstupnej časti cykasy a palmy. Stredoeurópska flóra je zastúpená skalkovou časťou z Českého krasu, rastlinami z teplomilných skalných stepí, horských vápencových skál, dubohrabových hájov, lužných lesov a stojatých a pomaly tečúcich vôd. V inej časti sú zastúpené vodné, bahenné, úžitkové rastliny, rastliny piesočnatých biotopov, rašelinísk a slatín. Nachádza sa tu napr. zatienená skalka, stredoeurópska skalka (uk.cz).

The Botanical Garden of Charles University in Prague was founded in 1775 by Josef Bohumír Mikan, originally in Smíchov, on the site of the former Jesuit garden (Wikipedia). The roots of the Botanical Garden date back to the first half of the 14th century. A massive monastery garden, including an orchard and vineyards, was established at the Carthusian monastery. The monastery disappeared during the Hussite wars, but the garden endured (Jan Puci, Jindřich Drda). Today’s Dienzenhofer Gardens are remnants of the original botanical garden. It had nine greenhouses, cultivating around 13 thousand species and forms of plants. After the flood in 1890, it was relocated to Nové Mesto, where it acquired the Slupská Garden built by the Czech Society for Garden Enhancement in Prague (Wikipedia). The bombing of Prague on February 14, 1945, destroyed the German greenhouses and damaged the Czech ones. The Czech greenhouses were rebuilt between 1946 and 1949 (Kamila Špinarová). The area of the botanical garden is 3.5 hectares, with approximately 100 thousand visitors annually (Wikipedia). There are about 3,000 plant species in the outdoor areas (bz-uk.cz). The exhibition area of the greenhouses is 1600 m² (uk.cz). In the summer, the humid subtropics move to the outdoors and are divided according to continents. Both the greenhouses and outdoor areas are open year-round, and entry to the outdoor areas is free (Jolana Nováková).

In the tropical greenhouses, cycads and palms dominate the entrance area. The next section features ferns and plants from tropical forests, with a rich representation of the Araceae family in the herbaceous layer. Another section includes a pond with water lilies, while orchids are found on the back wall. The subtropical greenhouses are divided into wetter and drier sections. The wet one is used for overwintering plants from outdoor areas, while the dry subtropical greenhouse is dedicated to succulents (Tomáš Procházka). The outdoor exhibits include approximately 3,000 plant species. Central European flora is represented by a rocky part from the Czech Karst, plants from thermophilic rocky steppes, mountain limestone rocks, oak-hornbeam forests, alluvial forests, and stagnant and slowly flowing waters. Another part features aquatic, marsh, utility plants, plants from sandy habitats, peat bogs, and marshes. Examples include a shaded rock garden, Central European rock garden (uk.cz).

(uniba.sk). Nájsť v nej možno tieto expozície skleníkové: austrálsky skleník, palmový skleník, kaktusový skleník, skleník úžitkových rastlín, Viktóriový skleník s vlhkomilnou a teplomilnou tropickou a subtropickou flórou. A vonkajšie: rozárium, andezitová skalka, vápencová skalka, travertínovo – penovcová skalka, troskovo – lávová skalka, bridlicová skalka, čadičová skalka, žulová skalka, rašelinisko, letničkové a trvalkové záhony, cudzokrajné a domáce dreviny, rododendrony a azalky, zimuvzdorné a mrazuvzdorné kaktusy, stredomorie, japonská záhrada (uniba.sk).

Nuž, ono to ani veľmi nejde.

The Botanical Garden was established in 1942 on a 6.6‑hectare plot of land around the Lafranconi villa, chosen for its water source from the Vydrica river. The construction of greenhouses and an irrigation system took place after 1945. The garden serves as a workplace for Comenius University, tasked with maintaining and expanding collections of living plants. In collaboration with other organizations, the garden hosts exhibitions. Various plant species are acclimatized experimentally in the Botanical Garden. The public is particularly interested in the thermophilic vegetation grown in the greenhouses (uniba.sk). The garden is open to the public from April 1 to October 31, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is located at Botanická ulica 3 in Bratislava (uniba.sk). The greenhouse exhibitions include the Australian greenhouse, palm greenhouse, cactus greenhouse, utility plant greenhouse, and the Victoria greenhouse with humid and thermophilic tropical and subtropical flora. Outdoor exhibits include the rose garden, andesite rockery, limestone rockery, travertine-pumice rockery, rubble-lava rockery, slate rockery, basalt rockery, granite rockery, peat bog, annual and perennial beds, exotic and native trees, rhododendrons and azaleas, cold-resistant and frost-resistant cacti, the Mediterranean region, and the Japanese garden (uniba.sk). The area of the complex was reduced due to the construction of the Lafranconi Bridge in the 1980s (Wikipedia).

As an environmental science graduate from the faculty located on the opposite hill, where I lived for five years, I frequented the Botanical Garden. We even had free access with our student IDs, and I visited outside public hours to study occasionally. There is a romantically charming pond in the back, near the Lafranconi Bridge, and a space with swings and other facilities for children not far from it. Throughout my acquaintance with it, since 1991, it’s been quite a long time, I can responsibly say that the marketing of the Botanical Garden is close to zero. I don’t understand it because, although the area might not be in favor with the powerful, it can certainly be better promoted. Investments are made, and things are maintained. As I often come here to take photographs, I have also come across a notice prohibiting commercial photography in the Botanical Garden. Well, it’s not something I’m interested in. Unless I focused on weddings, which is incredibly demanding. No, you should be grateful for promotion, for someone who values your work and the work of your predecessors and can and wants to promote it in at least this way. I wish the Botanical Garden that those in charge radically change their approach to this potentially excellent institution, especially in terms of tourism.
