Hits: 179

Tento príspevok zaznel na konferencii GIS Slovakia 2026.

Zmena klímy predstavuje jednu z najväčších environmentálnych a spoločenských výziev 21. storočia.

Niektoré územia môžu byť výrazne zasiahnuté horúčavami a suchom, iné extrémnymi zrážkami, ďalšie kombináciou viacerých rizík. Práve kombinácia rizík vytvára celkový obraz klimatickej zraniteľnosti mestského priestoru.

Farkas202603

Metodika hodnotenia pracovala s viacerými skupinami indikátorov. Prvou skupinou boli klimatické hrozby, napríklad budúce extrémne horúčavy podľa klimatickej a zdravotníckej definície, tropické dni, tropické , budúce sucho, index sucha SPEI, budúce extrémne zrážky a súčasné extrémne zrážky. Druhou skupinou boli socio-demografické ukazovatele, napríklad hustota zaľudnenia, podiel detí do štyroch rokov, seniorov nad 70 rokov, miera nezamestnanosti, príjem na obyvateľa, dostupnosť nemocnice, pripojenie obyvateľov na vodovod či podiel koncentrovaných rómskych komunít. Treťou skupinou boli charakteristiky fyzického prostredia, teda podiel stromovej pokrývky, nepriepustných povrchov, trávnatých porastov, vodných plôch, poľnohospodárskej pôdy, chránených území, erózne riziko a index nestabilnej pôdy. Napríklad tropické dni a tropické noci vstupovali najmä do hodnotenia extrémnych horúčav, index sucha SPEI do hodnotenia sucha a indikátory extrémnych zrážok do hodnotenia zrážkového rizika.

Farkas202604

Výsledky ukázali výrazné priestorové rozdiely medzi slovenskými mestami. Pri extrémnych horúčavách sa medzi najviac ohrozenými mestami a mestskými časťami objavili napríklad Štúrovo, -Karlova Ves, Hurbanovo, Bratislava-Staré Mesto, Nesvady, Nové , Komárno, Šurany, Želiezovce, Kolárovo, Šaľa, Bratislava-Petržalka a viaceré ďalšie mestské časti Bratislavy. Naopak, medzi najmenej ohrozené patrili najmä mestá severného a horského Slovenska, napríklad Čadca, Dolný Kubín, Námestovo, Trstená, Vysoké Tatry, Ružomberok, Tvrdošín, Martin či Turzovka. Najnižší stupeň rizika sucha mali najmä mestá severného Slovenska a horských oblastí, napríklad Námestovo, Dolný Kubín, Vysoké , Trstená, Krásno nad Kysucou, Medzilaborce, Stará Turá, Čadca, Tvrdošín, Turany a Ružomberok.

Farkas202605

Najvyššie kumulatívne riziko vykázali najmä Veľký Krtíš, Lučenec, Holíč, Bratislava-Devínska Nová Ves, Bratislava-Dúbravka, Sládkovičovo, Gbely, Šaštín-Stráže, Nová Baňa, Hurbanovo, Nesvady, Nové Zámky, Šurany, Kolárovo a ďalšie mestá či mestské časti. Naopak, medzi mestami s najnižším súhrnným stupňom klimatického rizika sa objavili najmä Trstená, Spišská Belá, Námestovo, Podolínec, Ružomberok, Spišské Podhradie, Liptovský Hrádok, Svit, , Vrútky, Stará Ľubovňa, Liptovský , Bardejov, Kežmarok, Levoča a Poprad.

Prepája klimatické dáta, socio-demografické charakteristiky, vlastnosti fyzického prostredia a priestorovú analýzu do jedného hodnotiaceho rámca.

Climate change represents one of the greatest environmental and societal challenges of the 21st century. In Slovakia, its manifestations are evident mainly in the increase in mean annual air temperature, the more frequent occurrence of anomalously warm years, the growing frequency of heatwaves, changes in the spatial and temporal distribution of precipitation, declining snow cover and more intense periods of drought. According to the data presented in the contribution, the mean annual air temperature in Slovakia increased by approximately 1.8 to 2 °C between 1881 and 2021, while temperature extremes already have measurable impacts on population mortality.

The contribution by Renáta Farkas focused on the assessment of climate risks in cities of the Slovak Republic. Cities are particularly important in this context because they concentrate population, economic activities, infrastructure, institutions, and cultural and material assets. At the same time, however, they are more vulnerable because of the physical characteristics of the urbanised environment. Built-up areas, impervious surfaces, altered water regimes, transport and technical infrastructure, and a limited share of vegetation can intensify the impacts of climate extremes. An important manifestation is also the urban heat island effect, whose intensity has been documented in Slovak cities both in annual averages and through specific measurements in Bratislava, Trnava and Žilina.

The presented assessment was based on a further development of the results of an evaluation carried out by the Institute for Environmental Policy. The author focused on the urban areas of Slovakia, examined the geographical aspects of climate-risk distribution, compiled rankings of cities according to levels and indices of climate hazard, identified the most and least threatened cities for individual impacts and created a synthetic view of climate risk in Slovak cities. The resulting outputs also include a typology of cities based on overall hazard levels. The assessment focused on three main groups of climate risks: extreme heat, drought and extreme precipitation. These were evaluated jointly in the form of cumulative climate risk. This approach is important because cities do not necessarily face only one type of impact. Some areas may be strongly affected by heat and drought, others by extreme precipitation, and still others by a combination of several risks. It is precisely this combination of risks that creates the overall picture of climate vulnerability in urban areas.

The assessment methodology worked with several groups of indicators. The first group consisted of climate hazards, including future extreme heat according to climatic and health-related definitions, tropical days, tropical nights, future drought, the SPEI drought index, future extreme precipitation and current extreme precipitation. The second group comprised socio-demographic indicators, such as population density, the proportion of children under four years of age, the proportion of people over 70, unemployment rate, municipal income per capita, accessibility of hospitals, the proportion of residents connected to public water supply systems and the share of concentrated Roma communities. The third group consisted of characteristics of the physical environment, including the proportion of tree canopy, impervious surfaces, grassland, water bodies, agricultural land and protected areas, as well as erosion risk and an unstable soil index. Importantly, the indicators were not applied identically to all risks. Tropical days and tropical nights, for example, contributed primarily to the assessment of extreme heat, the SPEI drought index to the assessment of drought, and extreme precipitation indicators to the assessment of precipitation-related risk. Some socio-demographic indicators, such as population density, the proportion of children and older people, unemployment and municipal income, were relevant to all three risk groups. This made it possible to capture not only the climate hazard itself, but also social sensitivity and differences in the ability of cities to cope with the impacts of climate change.

The results revealed substantial spatial differences among Slovak cities. In the case of extreme heat, the most threatened cities and city districts included Štúrovo, Bratislava-Karlova Ves, Hurbanovo, Bratislava-Staré Mesto, Nesvady, Nové Zámky, Komárno, Šurany, Želiezovce, Kolárovo, Šaľa, Bratislava-Petržalka and several other districts of Bratislava. By contrast, the least threatened cities were predominantly located in northern and mountainous Slovakia, including Čadca, Dolný Kubín, Námestovo, Trstená, Vysoké Tatry, Ružomberok, Tvrdošín, Martin and Turzovka.

In terms of drought risk, the highest positions were occupied mainly by cities and city districts in south-western Slovakia and lowland areas. Among the most threatened were Bratislava-Vrakuňa, Leopoldov, Bratislava-Ružinov, Bratislava-Podunajské Biskupice, Trnava, Nitra, Hurbanovo, Bratislava-Vajnory, Bratislava-Čunovo, Šamorín, Komárno, Nesvady, Senec, Sereď, Bratislava-Petržalka and Piešťany. The lowest levels of drought risk were mainly found in cities of northern Slovakia and mountainous areas, such as Námestovo, Dolný Kubín, Vysoké Tatry, Trstená, Krásno nad Kysucou, Medzilaborce, Stará Turá, Čadca, Tvrdošín, Turany and Ružomberok.

A different spatial pattern emerged in the case of extreme precipitation. Cities with the highest risk level included Vysoké Tatry, Turany, Handlová, Dolný Kubín, Tvrdošín, Krásno nad Kysucou, Kremnica, Nová Baňa, Medzilaborce, Čadca, Kysucké Nové Mesto, Snina, Banská Bystrica, Dobšiná, Skalica and Púchov. This indicates that the risk of extreme precipitation has a different geographical distribution from the risks of heat and drought. In the case of precipitation, relief, regional climatic conditions and the position of cities relative to mountainous and foothill areas play a significant role.

The synthetic output of the presentation was an assessment of cumulative climate risk, representing the overall exposure of cities to climate change. This assessment combined the hazard levels associated with heat, drought and extreme precipitation. The highest cumulative risk was recorded mainly in Veľký Krtíš, Lučenec, Holíč, Bratislava-Devínska Nová Ves, Bratislava-Dúbravka, Sládkovičovo, Gbely, Šaštín-Stráže, Nová Baňa, Hurbanovo, Nesvady, Nové Zámky, Šurany, Kolárovo and other cities and city districts. The significant representation of Bratislava in this group demonstrates that the capital is not threatened by only one climatic phenomenon, but by several risks simultaneously.

By contrast, the cities with the lowest overall level of climate risk included mainly Trstená, Spišská Belá, Námestovo, Podolínec, Ružomberok, Spišské Podhradie, Liptovský Hrádok, Svit, Martin, Vrútky, Stará Ľubovňa, Liptovský Mikuláš, Bardejov, Kežmarok, Levoča and Poprad. These cities should not, however, be understood as areas without climate risk. Rather, under the methodology applied, they achieve a lower overall level of hazard compared with other Slovak cities. Even in these cities, some individual risks may be significant, such as extreme precipitation or local factors associated with relief.

The significance of the presented assessment lies in the fact that it provides a nationwide, comparable and spatially interpretable perspective on climate risks in Slovak cities. It is not merely a map, but an analytical framework that makes it possible to compare cities, identify their dominant risks and distinguish areas where heat and drought prevail from those where the risk of extreme precipitation is more significant. Such findings are useful for the academic community, local governments, urban planners, spatial planners and adaptation-policy makers. The presentation also emphasised that effective climate-risk management requires detailed scientific knowledge of local conditions. A nationwide assessment therefore cannot be regarded as a definitive description of every local situation, but rather as a supporting tool that enables systematic comparison of cities, identification of dominant risks and recognition of broader spatial patterns.

Renáta Farkas’s contribution demonstrated that the assessment of climate risks in cities of the Slovak Republic is an important component of adaptation planning. It integrates climate data, socio-demographic characteristics, properties of the physical environment and spatial analysis within a single assessment framework. Its greatest value lies in its ability to transform complex climate-change data into a clear picture of which cities are most at risk, which hazards dominate within them and where local governments and the state should focus adaptation measures in a targeted manner.

Vilém Pechanec – Hodnocení zranitelnosti krajiny České republiky v důsledku změny klimatu a prioritizace naléhavosti adaptačních opatření

Hits: 183

Výsledky majú byť spracované v lokálnom meradle a sprístupnené na úrovni obcí, respektíve katastrálnych území, vo forme interaktívnej mapy a databázy.

Pechanec202601

Dôležitú úlohu zohráva detailná kombinovaná vrstva biotopov ČR z roku 2024, dáta o ekosystémových funkciách a službách, údaje o zásobe uhlíka v biomase, evapotranspirácii, ekologickej hodnote biotopov, produkčnej a vodoretenčnej funkcii. Dopĺňajú ich údaje o spade NOx, povrchovej teplote odvodené z dát Landsat 8/9, vegetačné charakteristiky zo Sentinel 1/2, nepriepustné povrchy, protierózny účinok vegetácie a predspracované adresné body ako vstup do analýz dopadu na ľudskú spoločnosť.

Pechanec202603

Z metodického hľadiska nejde o jednoduchý jednorazový výpočet jedného indexu. Prezentácia ukazuje, že RegAdapt využíva multikriteriálny prístup a viacero typov modelov. Medzi aplikované prístupy patrí napríklad ESAI – Environmental Sensitive Area Index, ktorý hodnotí stratu produkčnej schopnosti krajiny, modelovanie straty prírodnosti biotopov prostredníctvom prístupu CZ-GLOBIO, ako aj bioklimatické modelovanie dopadov klimatickej zmeny na vybrané indikačné taxóny. Takto sa zraniteľnosť krajiny nechápe iba ako klimatický problém, ale ako výsledok vzťahu medzi klimatickou expozíciou, stavom krajiny, intenzitou ľudskej činnosti, fragmentáciou, infraštruktúrou a schopnosťou ekosystémov plniť svoje funkcie. Samotné hodnotenie zahŕňa trinásť rizík. medzi nepoškodenie vegetácie suchom, zvýšený výskyt požiarov, zníženie prírodnosti biotopov v dôsledku zmien využitia územia, fragmentácie a znečistenia, dopady vĺn horúčav v mestskom prostredí, vznik mestských tepelných ostrovov, nedostupnosť pitnej vody pre obyvateľstvo, dopady extrémnych zrážok, dopady sucha na obyvateľov a mestské prostredie, vysychanie prameňov, vodných tokov, mokradí a pokles hladín vodných nádrží, ohrozenie veternou eróziou a posun areálov indikačných druhov. Tieto riziká vytvárajú komplexný obraz o tom, kde je krajina zraniteľná environmentálne, kde sociálne a kde sa oba typy zraniteľnosti prekrývajú. Pre každé katastrálne územie vzniká sada hodnôt pre jednotlivé riziká a ich komponenty. Následne sa riziká vzájomne kombinujú a rankujú, čím vzniká jednotná vrstva s hodnotami rizík, stupňom priority a popisnými atribútmi.

Pechanec202604

Climate change is fundamentally altering the functioning of the landscape and increasing pressure on its ecological stability, water regime, biodiversity, and the quality of life of the population. However, climate impacts do not occur in isolation within the landscape. Drought, heatwaves, extreme precipitation, fires, loss of habitat naturalness, fragmentation, pollution, and anthropogenic pressure interact with one another, reinforcing or, conversely, partially mitigating their effects. Vilém Pechanec’s contribution therefore presented an example of a comprehensive GIS approach seeking to answer the question: where is the landscape most vulnerable, and where is the implementation of adaptation measures most urgent?

The presented RegAdapt project focuses on mapping the regional distribution of the Czech Republic according to the urgency of implementing climate change adaptation measures. It is a project under the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic’s Environment for Life programme, implemented between 04/2024 and 03/2026, whose objective is to regionalise the entire territory of the Czech Republic according to landscape vulnerability and the need for adaptation interventions. The results are intended to be produced at a local scale and made accessible at the level of municipalities or cadastral areas in the form of an interactive map and database. Landscape vulnerability is understood within the project as a combination of three basic components: exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. Exposure expresses the degree to which an area is subjected to climatic or environmental stress, sensitivity determines how strongly a particular landscape or urban component responds to that stress, and adaptive capacity reflects the system’s ability to resist, recover, or mitigate negative impacts. Importantly, the same climatic phenomenon does not necessarily have the same consequences everywhere. Drought has different effects in a forest landscape, agricultural areas, urban environments, and areas with a high water-retention capacity of habitats.

The RegAdapt methodological approach is based on five consecutive stages. The first is the creation of vulnerability matrices, in which the causes of vulnerability are grouped into thematic categories according to the main factor causing them and according to their manifestations in open landscapes or urbanised environments. The second stage involves the creation of individual indicators – the selection and processing of data capable of expressing particular manifestations of vulnerability. The third stage is the development of vulnerability components, where indicators are combined into values representing exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. The fourth stage is the assessment of vulnerability at the level of cadastral areas, while the fifth stage consists of prioritising the urgency of intervention. A major strength of the project is its use of a very high level of spatial detail. Analyses are conducted at the level of large administrative regions but, depending on the nature of the input data, also at the level of habitats, pixels, segments, or blocks. Only subsequently are the resulting values aggregated to the level of cadastral areas. The presentation referred to 13,091 cadastral areas for which component and vulnerability values are calculated for individual risks. This approach makes it possible to capture the local heterogeneity of the landscape while at the same time producing outputs that can be practically used for planning and public-sector decision-making.

The project works with an extensive collection of datasets. These include climate data, such as drought indicators based on precipitation and evapotranspiration, numbers of tropical days and nights, temperature, precipitation, and soil-water availability, as well as climate normals and projections. An important role is played by a detailed combined habitat layer of the Czech Republic from 2024, data on ecosystem functions and services, information on carbon stored in biomass, evapotranspiration, the ecological value of habitats, and their production and water-retention functions. These are complemented by data on NOx deposition, land surface temperature derived from Landsat 8/9 data, vegetation characteristics obtained from Sentinel-1/2, impervious surfaces, the anti-erosion effect of vegetation, and pre-processed address points used as inputs for analyses of impacts on human society. From a methodological perspective, this is not a simple one-off calculation of a single index. The presentation showed that RegAdapt uses a multicriteria approach and several types of models. Applied approaches include, for example, ESAI – the Environmental Sensitive Area Index, which assesses the loss of the landscape’s productive capacity; modelling the loss of habitat naturalness using the CZ-GLOBIO approach; and bioclimatic modelling of climate change impacts on selected indicator taxa. Landscape vulnerability is therefore not understood solely as a climatic problem, but rather as the result of interactions between climatic exposure, the condition of the landscape, the intensity of human activity, fragmentation, infrastructure, and the ability of ecosystems to perform their functions.

The assessment itself covers thirteen risks. These include drought-related damage to vegetation, an increased incidence of fires, declining habitat naturalness as a result of land-use change, fragmentation and pollution, the impacts of heatwaves in urban environments, the formation of urban heat islands, insufficient availability of drinking water for the population, impacts of extreme precipitation, impacts of drought on residents and the urban environment, the drying up of springs, watercourses and wetlands and declining water levels in reservoirs, vulnerability to wind erosion, and shifts in the distribution ranges of indicator species. Together, these risks create a comprehensive picture of where the landscape is vulnerable environmentally, where it is vulnerable socially, and where the two types of vulnerability overlap. For every cadastral area, a set of values is created for the individual risks and their components. The risks are subsequently combined and ranked, producing a unified layer containing risk values, priority levels, and descriptive attributes. The resulting category is intended not only to visualise vulnerability but, above all, to determine the priority of individual measures.

The individual parts of the cluster also make it possible to identify the principal cause of a problem and its severity. Particularly important is the shift from analytical output to decision-making. The project makes it possible to determine not only where an area is vulnerable, but also where intervention is most urgent and what type of measures should be preferred. GIS analysis is thus linked with adaptation planning, environmental policy, spatial development, and investment decision-making. In practice, this means that the results can help direct attention and resources towards areas where adaptation measures have the greatest potential impact. The project generates three main outputs. The first is an interactive vulnerability map of the Czech landscape and the prioritisation of adaptation measures. The second is a specialised public database characterising individual regions or cadastral areas from the perspective of vulnerability. The third output is a methodological report describing the methodological approaches used in landscape vulnerability analysis.

The presentation also demonstrated that the project has broader significance beyond the territory of the Czech Republic. Its conclusion raised the question of transferring the approach to Slovakia, particularly through the JIZKES project – Unified Identification of Landscape Vulnerability and Methodology for Designing Adaptation Measures with Special Regard to Ecosystem Functions. This is an Interreg SK-CZ project involving Palacký University in Olomouc, Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, and the Global Change Research Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Its objective is to compare national approaches to vulnerability analysis, practically apply the methodology of one country in the territory of the other, develop a unified approach for cross-border regions, and establish common data and methodological foundations. In this context, the issue of data compatibility is particularly important. The presentation highlighted that GIS is capable of working with very large and heterogeneous datasets, but the quality of the resulting analysis is directly dependent on the quality of the input data. The availability of relevant data, their scale, timeliness, update cycle, and cross-border compatibility remain important challenges. Data from the Copernicus programme were identified as a highly valuable but still not fully utilised resource. At the same time, data incompatibility in border regions can distort analytical results and therefore needs to be taken into account when interpreting them.

The presentation demonstrated landscape vulnerability assessment as a fully developed GIS discipline that integrates climatology, ecology, remote sensing, spatial modelling, environmental planning, and decision-making practice. RegAdapt provides a methodological framework for understanding why some areas are more vulnerable than others, which factors cause this vulnerability, and where action is required most urgently. This is precisely where the project’s principal value lies: transforming complex environmental data into an understandable, spatially precise, and practically applicable basis for adapting the landscape to climate change.

Důležitou roli hraje detailní kombinovaná vrstva biotopů ČR z roku 2024, data o ekosystémových funkcích a službách, údaje o zásobě uhlíku v biomase, evapotranspiraci, ekologické hodnotě biotopů, produkční a vodoretenční funkci.

Patří mezi ně poškození vegetace suchem, zvýšený výskyt požárů, snížení přirozenosti biotopů v důsledku změn využití území, fragmentace a znečištění, dopady vln veder v městském prostředí, vznik městských tepelných ostrovů, nedostupnost pitné vody pro obyvatelstvo, dopady extrémních srážek, dopady sucha na obyvatele a městské prostředí, vysychání pramenů, vodních toků a mokřadů a pokles hladin vodních nádrží, ohrožení větrnou erozí a posun areálů indikačních druhů.

Hits: 634

Výpočet prebieha porovnaním relatívnych priebehov týchto dvoch veličín v kľúčových bodoch roka, napríklad pri 25 %, 50 % a 75 % amplitúdy, pričom výsledná hodnota predstavuje priemer viacerých čiastkových odchýlok.

Climate is not merely a summary of temperatures and precipitation. It is the result of a complex system of processes occurring within the atmosphere, at the Earth’s surface and through interactions between them. One of the key factors shaping this system is solar radiation. Its amount, distribution and interaction with the surface determine the fundamental characteristics of climate, including its continental or oceanic nature. Climatic continentality expresses the extent to which a climate is influenced by inland conditions rather than by oceanic effects. In practice, it is manifested primarily through greater temperature differences between summer and winter and higher weather variability. In Central Europe, including Slovakia, continentality is a highly dynamic characteristic influenced not only by geographical location but also by local factors. Radiation factors are among the most significant of these.

Solar radiation is the primary source of energy for the Earth’s climate system. Its intensity depends on several variables, including latitude, season, cloud cover and surface properties such as albedo and vegetation cover. These factors subsequently affect the temperature regime of the landscape and, consequently, its climatic character. Analysing the relationship between continentality and radiation factors provides a better understanding of how energy is distributed across the landscape and how it influences climatic processes. It also provides tools for identifying areas that are more susceptible to extremes, such as substantial temperature fluctuations or overheating. From a methodological perspective, this involves combining climatological data with spatial analyses. Long-term time series of meteorological measurements are used and subsequently linked with information about radiation conditions. GIS technologies play an important role in this process by making it possible to integrate, analyse and visualise these data spatially.

The integration of climatology and geoinformatics therefore represents a powerful tool for both understanding and managing climatic processes within the landscape. It is relevant not only to scientific research but also as a practical basis for decision-making that directly affects residents‘ quality of life. Ultimately, it is about understanding one fundamental principle: climate is the result of global processes as well as local interactions between energy, the surface and space. The relationship between radiation factors and continentality is also reflected in the time lag between the annual courses of radiation and temperature, which represents the differing characteristics of oceanic and inland regions. The radiation balance influences temperature amplitude, while altitude also plays an important role, as the new method for evaluating continentality is sensitive to it. In the presented approach, extraterrestrial solar radiation and its seasonal course throughout the year constitute the principal radiation component.

An important methodological advance in the evaluation of continentality is the use of a new approach based on comparing the annual courses of air temperature and extraterrestrial solar radiation. This is not merely a general assessment of the relationship between climate and radiation, but a new method for measuring climatic continentality in relation to radiation factors. The approach is based on the assumption that a time lag exists between the maximum level of radiation and the maximum temperature, and that this lag is characteristic of a particular area. This principle forms the basis of the E index, which quantifies continentality as the time shift, expressed in days, between the annual courses of radiation and temperature. Expressing continentality in days is one of the method’s principal contributions, as it makes it possible to describe climatic differences as a characteristic that can be interpreted in temporal terms.

The calculation is performed by comparing the relative annual courses of the two variables at key points, such as 25%, 50% and 75% of their amplitudes. The resulting value represents the average of several partial deviations. The method was illustrated using specific locations with differing oceanic and continental regimes, as well as examples from tropical and extratropical zones. These examples demonstrate the different time lags between the annual courses of radiation and temperature. Such comparisons confirm that the E index can sensitively distinguish between coastal and inland climate types. The practical results indicate that continentality increases with distance from the ocean, with the relationship following an approximately logarithmic pattern. Spatial analyses performed in a GIS environment use climatic-data interpolation, specifically the Ordinary Kriging method, which accounts for the spatial autocorrelation of measurements.

When processing data for Europe, adjacent stations in Russia were also included to represent the eastern boundary more accurately, while island areas were interpolated separately. An analysis along the 50th parallel, for example, demonstrates a very strong relationship between the E index value and distance from the coastline (R² ≈ 0.88). This confirms the dominant influence of oceanic climate regulation in coastal regions. This approach makes it possible to produce continuous continentality maps for the entirety of Europe or even the world while accounting for specific geographical conditions, including island territories and peripheral regions. The interpolated raster was subsequently converted into polygons using the Equal Interval classification method, enabling a clearer spatial interpretation of the results.

Another important conclusion is that the new E index does not operate in isolation but shows a greater degree of agreement with the ombric continentality index. At the same time, it appears to be particularly applicable outside the tropical zone—that is, in areas located beyond the tropics—where the seasonal courses of radiation and temperature allow this type of comparison to be interpreted more reliably. The maps reveal a gradient of continentality, extending from the oceanic western part of Europe, characterised by low values, to the markedly continental regions of Eastern Europe and the interior of Asia. This spatial pattern confirms that continentality is not merely a function of geographical location but also the result of complex interactions between radiation and atmospheric circulation factors. The new method is also sensitive to local conditions, including altitude, terrain orientation, the windward and leeward sides of mountain ranges and the effects of warm and cold ocean currents. It can therefore represent finer spatial differences in climatic characteristics more accurately.

Vodné rastliny

Hits: 53415

Pravdepodobne by najmä bránila difúzii plynov.

Aquatic plants differ from terrestrial plants; they are adapted to the underwater environment. The leaves of aquatic plants have stomata on both the upper and lower surfaces – they breathe through both „sides,“ unlike terrestrial plants. The surface of terrestrial plants is covered with a cuticle, which is almost absent in almost all species of aquatic plants. It would likely hinder gas diffusion. Floating plants usually do not root, even those that live on the water surface. The roots are similar in shape to those of terrestrial species. The consequences cannot always be taken as a barrier, as there are aquatic plants that grow above the water surface in natural conditions or grow in marshes with low water levels but high humidity. In aquariums, the terms submerged form and emerged form of plants are common. The submerged form grows underwater, while the emerged form grows above the water. The individual forms often differ in shape and color. In practice, vegetative propagation of plants is widely used – by cuttings, runners, shoots, etc. The submerged form can grow into the emerged form in an aquarium – often seen in plants like Echinodorus. If the tank is too low for the plant, it often finds its way out. However, aquatic plants also bloom, often very similar to terrestrial species. The flower sometimes forms below the water surface, more often above it. Sexual reproduction of plants is not excluded but is problematic and is rather a task for a specialist. Aquatic plants are mostly green, sometimes red, purple, or reddish-brown. There are numerous species of aquatic plants.

Light is an important factor for plants – there are shade-tolerant species, for example, Microsorium, Vesicularia, and light-loving species, for example, Salvinia, Pistia. Differences also exist in terms of the optimal temperature. There are species that clearly grow differently with relatively small temperature differences. Leaves are denser together in cooler water, and the color of the leaves is darker, etc. Most aquatic aquarium plants have a relatively narrow temperature range in which they live. Some aquarium species can tolerate very low temperatures, similar to the cold-water conditions of our temperate zone. Water flow also affects plants. Some species are adapted to stagnant water, while others prefer fast-flowing streams. In the aquarium, the main sources of water flow are the filter and aeration. Water flow significantly influences decoration, and the slope and relief of the bottom also play a role. A flat bottom creates stronger currents. Medications used in aquaristics have a very negative effect on plants, unfortunately, their negative impact is long-lasting. If possible, transplant at least some of the plants to another tank during treatment. This is also a reason to set up a separate quarantine tank. After using medications, activated carbon can be used. Aquarium enthusiasts often transplant plants, usually during vegetative propagation.

I don’t recommend transplanting larger mother plants frequently. Plants can also be a source of food for fish, snails, etc., which is usually undesirable. Young suction snails are often used to eliminate algae. If they are small, they do their job diligently, but larger ones tend to go after the plants instead. Snails can also consume algae, especially if they lack other food, but they can also target plants. The most common apple snails do not eat plants. In the aquarium, we use artificial light, and the length of illumination should be similar to their natural habitat. It’s equally important to maintain regularity; a 12-14 hour interval is necessary. It depends on the placement, whether we are in a dark room, the length of daylight, and how much sunlight is available. Natural light has a different quality than artificial light; it can only be adapted to. Species are adapted to different environments. Water plants, just like their terrestrial relatives, change their metabolism depending on the alternation of day and night. It’s their own natural biorhythm. During the day, plants absorb light, CO2, produce organic matter, and as a by-product, produce oxygen. This process is called photosynthesis.

V noci naopak rastliny kyslík prijímajú – rastliny dýchajú a vylučujú do vody CO2.

At night, on the other hand, plants absorb oxygen – plants respire and release CO2 into the water. However, plants also respire during the day, but CO2 uptake prevails. Due to the respiration of plants at night – the production of CO2, the pH in the aquarium increases. The concentration of CO2 rises with water hardness, water temperature, and decreases with pH. One of the basic functions of plants is the mineralization of matter. Detritus is a layer of sediment composed of waste, fish excrement, snails, etc., which needs to be broken down. This process is carried out by microorganisms, especially bacteria. Plants play an important role in this process because they can also break down some substances, but in any case, already mineralized substances are a source of nutrition for them. Some roots, like leaves (green parts of plants), produce oxygen, but under normal conditions, each plant produces a small amount of oxygen that contributes to the aerobic reduction of matter around them. Some species are particularly good at removing nutrients from the water, which are desired by aquarists, e.g., Riccia fluitans is an ideal biological agent for reducing nitrate levels. Similarly, Ceratophyllum demersum possesses similar abilities. Likewise, Anacharis densa effectively removes calcium from the water. Plants bind these substances into their tissues and incorporate them into their physiological processes. Since these substances are often unwelcome for us aquarists, this ability is valuable.

The influence of filtration and especially aeration on plant growth is more or less negative. It cannot be said definitively, but filtration that draws from the surface, and thus aeration as well, is undesirable for plant growth, so let’s not overdo it. Let’s leave the task of keeping an aquarium completely without filtration to the specialists; I myself have several such aquariums. However, plants can also change color. Aquatic plants, much like their terrestrial relatives, primarily exhibit green coloration due to chlorophyll. However, even an individual can undergo changes during ontogeny. The purple color of otherwise green plants is due to a large amount of light and nutrients.

V prvom rade by sme mali dodržať, že veľké jedince (druhy) sadíme dozadu a menšie dopredu. Vyvarujme sa tiež sadeniu presne do stredu nádrže. Rovnako s citom narábajme so symetriou. V poradí dôležitosti by som svetlo postavil pred CO2. Pre úspešný rast rastlín treba kvalitné osvetlenie.

Planting of plants

First of all, we should keep in mind that large specimens (species) should be planted in the back and smaller ones in the front. Also, let’s avoid planting exactly in the center of the tank. Likewise, handle symmetry with care. Trim the roots with sharp scissors to 1-2 cm (not for the genus Anubias, Cryptocoryne), and when planting, avoid damaging them. All roots should be in the substrate; no exposed roots are desirable. For some plants with a well-developed root system, such as Echinodorus, gently lift the planted plant after planting – the root collar should protrude slightly. In the case of cuttings, it is advisable to plant the plant so that we do not plant a bare stem, but so that the lower leaves are literally fixed into the substrate. Water plants will thus gain support and have a much better structure. Floating plants such as Limnobium, Pistia, Riccia, Salvinia are freely placed on the surface, while other floating plants are simply dropped into the water. Some of them are capable of rooting, but not long-term. For example, Riccia can be quite effectively used as a carpet on the bottom. Since it tends to float to the surface, it is necessary to somehow anchor it – for example, with flat stones. Microsorium, Anubias are attached to wood, to the filter. The most suitable for this is a braided string from a fishing shop. If we buy plants in a store, they will probably be planted in baskets and mineral wool. These are not suitable for the aquarium, especially not rock wool, so we remove water plants from the baskets and remove them from mineral wool. Plants obtain energy in several ways. Their natural source of energy is CO2 – carbon dioxide and light. Just remember photosynthesis from school. If plants have enough CO2, they cannot utilize it in the absence of light. If plants have enough light, in the absence of CO2, they cannot utilize it sufficiently. However, if both values are optimal, it is a great prerequisite for the very successful growth of our plants. In terms of importance, I would place light before CO2. Quality lighting is essential for successful plant growth.

If we observe oxygen production by plants – the formation of bubbles of fresh oxygen, the concentration of oxygen in the cell has risen above 40 mg/l. For more successful plant growth, it is often advisable to supplement nutrients. Increased nutrient uptake – energy is also contributed by water flow. Plants also receive nutrients in the form of waste materials – fish excrement. Even tanks of the so-called Dutch type (planted) often contain some fish, which serve to constantly enrich the nutrients. In this case, more with trace elements. If there is a lack of CO2 in the water and plants are able to obtain it from bicarbonates, biogenic decalcification can occur – the precipitation of insoluble calcium carbonate on the surface of leaves. However, the uptake of bicarbonates is more energy-intensive. Aquariums often have enough nutrients in the form of fish excrement. Humic acids are substances that are commonly found in water in nature. They are products of the transformation of wood, soil, leaves, plant parts. From the point of view of use for aquaristics, the use of wood and leaves, or cones, nut shells, etc., is interesting. They are extremely important for plants because they can be an energy bridge between a source of nutrition and a plant. Thanks to these organic complexes, the plant can obtain what nature offers. It’s a similar function to what bioflavonoids have for vitamin C. It’s useless to take megadoses of vitamins if the body can’t utilize them. Humic acids are formed naturally in the soil. Iron in water under normal conditions oxidizes very quickly into a form unusable for plants.

The filter is literally an iron eater. However, when it binds in chelates, in organic complexes, it becomes accessible to plants. This includes Fe2+ and Fe3+, and it is precisely humic acids that serve as a substrate where iron can be utilized by plants. Iron deficiency causes chlorosis, characterized by weak tissues – glassy leaves, yellowing especially from the edges, similar to terrestrial plants. Minerals and trace elements are obtained naturally from water and detritus. Trace elements are substances, elements that are not essential in large quantities, but only in low (trace) concentrations – e.g., Zn, Mn, K, Cu. Some of these elements can be harmful or even toxic in higher concentrations. Detritus is matter composed of organic matter from dead plants, fish excrement, etc. In the case of a planted aquarium, the mineral content is often the stumbling block. The best way to achieve this is through fish. Microorganisms – especially nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria – break down matter into substances that plants can use. Plants primarily utilize this energy source through their roots. Some are capable of binding more NO3 – nitrates, for example, Ceratophyllum demersum, Riccia fluitans. Many of us have source water containing high levels of nitrates. The maximum value in drinking water standards is quite high for aquariums, especially unsuitable for new ones. Due to the relatively high nitrogen content, it can lead more easily to the formation of toxic ammonia.

Ten samozrejme uniká do atmosféry – von z nádrže.

The nitrogen cycle takes a little over a month, so the nitrate anion added today travels through the aquarium ecosystem for more than a month before it leaves. Denitrification and nitrification processes are quite complex. An interesting fact even for a layperson is that gaseous nitrogen N2 is also produced as a product of these reactions. This nitrogen naturally escapes into the atmosphere – out of the tank. Denitrifying bacteria are found in the filter. As I wrote in the article about filtration, it is not suitable to subject filter media to flowing water from the regular water supply. Therefore, to avoid killing our established bacteria, it is better to wash the foam in water without chlorine and other gases used in the water supply system. There are products available on the market containing bacteria that are added to the filter. Various fertilizer products and nutritional supplements for plants are available on the market. It is not recommended to combine fertilizers from different companies or products from one company. I use mechanically trapped particles from the filter as fertilizer for potted terrestrial plants. The filter, as an oxidant, usually contains a lot of substances, with iron being particularly valuable, which acts as a balm for often nutrient-poor soils in pots. This material is, moreover, so to speak, digested, so it decomposes relatively quickly in the soil.

Peat reduces the pH and water hardness, providing humic acids and other organic substances to the water. PMDD is a widely used non-commercial fertilizer. It is mixed from potassium sulfate, magnesium sulfate heptahydrate, potassium nitrate, and trace elements: B, Ca, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Zn, which are in the form of organic complexes. It is a suitable combination in which trace elements are probably the most important. I don’t add CO2 using the well-known fermentation process. However, a bottle is enough for this purpose, into which we pour water almost to the top, add yeast and sugar. I recommend starting with warmer water (around 35 °C). I seal the bottle with a stopper, in which I have a hole for a tube, which ends in the aquarium with an air stone or a lime wood piece. A cigarette filter can also be successfully used. Alternatively, the tube ends in the aquarium filter, through which it sprays into the water. Such a CO2 dispenser can produce carbon dioxide for 3 – 5 weeks. However, it has a flaw in that it is not protected against a sudden increase in CO2 production. It’s better not to pump CO2 into the tank at night. CO2 cylinders for making soda can also be used for CO2 production. There are various CO2 diffusers available on the market. I use a CO2 cylinder with a pressure regulator and a „needle“ (bicycle) valve, from which a tube goes into the canister in the aquarium. It works so that the water „requests“ as much CO2 as it „needs“. This way, I achieve a maximally reasonable saturation of the aquarium with carbon dioxide. The pressure regulator is there to reduce the pressure to 5 atmospheres. The needle valve, in general, reduces the pressure to a suitable level for a regular thin aquarium hose. There are also normal needle valves, but I use a valve that cyclists use to inflate tires. It costs less than 10 €. There are various pressure regulators available; some offer CO2 pressure at the output, which can go straight into the tank. It can be combined using solenoid valves, which would open according to a switch. I manage it so that I always inject CO2 in the morning. I do not recommend constantly saturating the aquarium, pushing carbon dioxide into the water through open valves, for example, through spraying using a filter. In any case, whether purchasing a commercial product or a DIY solution, it should be borne in mind that gas diffusion in water is about 4 times lower than in air. So, similarly to oxygen, CO2 is absorbed in larger quantities assuming the formation of smaller bubbles. Henry’s law states that the concentration of dissolved gas is directly proportional to the partial pressure of the gas above its surface – it is essentially analogous to osmotic phenomena.

When treating water, caution is necessary. Knowledge of chemistry is useful. It is necessary to realize that without responsibility towards living organisms, it is not ethical to approach experiments with changes in water parameters. It is useful to familiarize oneself with the parameters of water. Qualitatively, all changes can be made by mixing with water of different properties. Monitoring water parameters, adjusting hardness, and pH are often overemphasized. Fish bred for generations in captivity are often adapted to our conditions. It is not paramount for fish and plants to live in water with the same pH and hardness as they do in nature, but to meet as many conditions as possible for their successful development. Do not get lost in constant measurements and attempts to change. For regular aquarium practice, water parameters are overrated.

Pomôže staršia mraznička, chladiarenský prístroj a šikovný majster.

Raising the water temperature with a heater is quite common in various areas, not just in aquariums. However, a far more challenging problem is how to cool the water. This question is primarily addressed by aquarists dealing with the breeding of marine organisms. Here, the option to utilize the principle of Peltier cells presents itself. An old freezer, refrigeration device, and a skilled craftsman can help. The second option is purchasing from a store. Cooling water in this way is financially demanding. On a small scale, ice can be used, but it is dangerous – because melting ice requires a lot of energy. Ice is a solid substance and has a high thermal capacity – it requires more energy to transition to a liquid state for the same temperature change. Let’s proceed cautiously so we don’t have to experience temperature extremes.

Varom vyzrážame len uhličitanovú tvrdosť a to maximálne o 2.7 °dKH. Anacharis densa a živočíchov, najmä ulitníkov a lastúrnikov znižujú obsah Ca a Mg vo vode.

If we want to change the water hardness, with common inexpensive means, we can only increase it. We can increase the content of calcium and magnesium with calcium carbonate – CaCO3, magnesium carbonate – MgCO3, calcium sulfate – CaSO4, magnesium sulfate – MgSO4, calcium chloride – CaCl2. Naturally, for example, with limestone. However, if we want to achieve a quick change, we must use a stronger concentration. Finally, effective commercial products are available that can quickly increase hardness. However, a much more difficult question arises if we intend to decrease the hardness. It is possible to use precipitation with oxalic acid, but the equilibrium of this process is small. However, if we were able to filter this water mechanically with a very fine filter, we might achieve the desired result. Boiling water to reduce hardness is very uneconomical. The effect is minimal. Boiling only precipitates carbonate hardness, up to a maximum of 2.7 °dKH. In addition, boiling also destroys the little life that is in the water, so I do not recommend boiling. Activated charcoal partially reduces water hardness, similarly some types of plants such as Anacharis densa and animals, especially snails and crustaceans, reduce the content of Ca and Mg in the water. They are able to accumulate large amounts of calcium in their shells, as they are practically dependent on its occurrence. Ampullaria are able to bind a relatively large amount of calcium into their shells in larger quantities. Conversely, in its absence, their shells soften. Peat also reduces water hardness to a small extent. Mixing softer water is of course possible to achieve lower hardness, and it works linearly. For practical purposes, we have the following options in principle.

Distillation – In the distillation column, water is stripped of ions. Distillation generates a significant amount of wastewater. The use of large volumes of water is necessary because distillation involves high temperatures that need to be cooled. The distillation column is a considerable investment, used by breeders who have a larger number of tanks. The efficiency of distillation is very high. However, it must be said that distilled water is not very suitable for aquarium purposes. It is sterile water and very labile. Therefore, it is good to mix this water. Reverse osmosis is ideal for this reason. Technical distilled water from the store is not very suitable for aquarists. The operation of the distillation column itself does not undergo any significant wear and tear, and in any case, under normal use, it does not require high subsequent investments.

Oproti destilačnej sústave majú jednu veľkú nevýhodu v trvanlivosti – membrány a filtračné média osmotickej kolóny je nutné časom meniť, pretože inak reverzka prestane plniť svoju funkciu.

Reverse osmosis – a process that utilizes semipermeability. Osmosis is a known process in which the exchange of substances occurs due to osmotic pressure assuming semipermeability between two systems. For clarification – simple diffusion, mixing cannot occur because there is a boundary, an obstacle between two systems. But due to the fact that this boundary is semipermeable, thanks to osmotic pressure, the flow of substances occurs. Reverse osmosis also utilizes this, but with the difference that in reverse osmosis, ions are completely removed, there is no equalization of osmotic pressure on both sides. The water obtained in this way is suitable for aquarists. Finally, its efficiency is not as high as in distillation. Water from a reverse osmosis system typically reaches 1 – 10% of the original conductivity value. There are commercially available reverse osmosis units on the market that can be purchased. They do not take up as much space as distillation systems. However, compared to distillation systems, they have one major disadvantage in terms of durability – membranes and filtration media of the reverse osmosis unit need to be replaced over time because otherwise, the reverse osmosis system will fail to function properly.

Iontomeničom (Ionexom) – elektrolytická úprava cez katex a anex, z ktorých jeden je záporne nabitý a priťahuje katióny a druhý kladne a priťahuje anióny.

Ion exchange (Ionex) – electrolytic treatment via a cathex and anex, one of which is negatively charged and attracts cations, and the other is positively charged and attracts anions. Water passes through these two main parts, and ions are bound to the individual parts. This achieves demineralization from ions. Ionex could also be easily assembled amateurishly. The problem is that cathex and anex have their capacity. Over time, it must be regenerated to maintain its physical properties and the entire system to be effective. Regeneration is carried out by the action of various specific substances, in some cases, kitchen salt. As an ion exchange (changer) for calcium, permutit, wofatit, and cabunit are used, for example. Selective ion exchangers are designed to eliminate certain elements – components in water. For nitrogen – N, monmorillonite, and clinoptiolite are suitable.

Reduction of conductivity is achieved by the same methods as described for water hardness. Similarly, increasing conductivity. The source water available to us typically has a slightly alkaline pH, with drinking tap water usually around 7.5. For many fish, it is suitable to increase the acidity to values around 6.5. We have several options – either change the pH purely chemically or more naturally. pH change is more effective when water contains fewer dissolved substances. If it contains a lot of salts, the pH change will be somewhat smaller, and any fluctuations in this value will be smaller. The effect of NaCl – salt on the pH of water is negligible for the aquarist because it is a salt of a strong base – NaOH and a strong acid – HCl, so it does not affect the pH. Practically, NaCl affects pH only because aquarium water is a solution containing various substances with which NaCl reacts. However, this effect is small and difficult to predict.

Ak by sme predsa len použili silné kyseliny: 2HCl + Ca(HCO3)2 = CaCl2 + 2H2CO3 – reakciou kyseliny chlorovodíkovej (soľnej) vzniká chlorid vápenatý.

For reducing pH, it is suitable to use weak phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄). H₃PO₄ is a weak acid. The amount necessary should be determined by experimentation. The pH change by any means also depends on the salt content, partially on temperature, and pressure. It can be roughly estimated that to lower the pH in a 100-liter tank, H₃PO₄ should be applied in milliliters. I do not recommend using other acids; however, for your safety, it should also be a weak acid of simple composition. H₃PO₄ is commonly used to reduce hardness. When using H₃PO₄, the following reactions occur (in the listed reactions, calcium Ca can be replaced with magnesium Mg):

2H₃PO₄ + 3Ca(HCO₃)₂ = Ca₃(PO₄)₂ + 6H₂CO₃ – acid reacts with calcium bicarbonate to form soluble calcium phosphate and weak carbonic acid. H₂CO₃ is unstable and can break down into water and carbon dioxide. The resulting phosphate can be fertilizer for fish, algae, or a source of phosphorus for fish.

2H₃PO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = Ca(H₂PO₄)₂ + 6H₂CO₃ – soluble dihydrogen phosphate calcium is formed.

H₃PO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = CaHPO₄ + 2H₂CO₃ – insoluble calcium hydrogen phosphate is formed.

If we were to use strong acids:

2HCl + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = CaCl₂ + 2H₂CO₃ – reaction of hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid) forms calcium chloride.

H₂SO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = CaSO₄ + 2H₂CO₃ – reaction of sulfuric acid forms calcium sulfate.

If the source water contains limestone, the water’s buffering capacity will be evident – calcium carbonate CaCO₃ reacts with the resulting carbonic acid to form bicarbonate, entering the carbonic acid cycle. In this way, our options to influence pH are limited. pH will decrease for a certain time, but not for long; this mainly depends on the concentration of bicarbonates (from CO₂) and the amount of acid used – it’s obvious that the buffering capacity has its limits. In the case of high water hardness, continuous CO₂ treatment is more effective.

2H₃PO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = Ca(H₂PO₄)₂ + 6H₂CO₃ – lösliches Dihydrogenphosphatcalcium entsteht.

H₃PO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = CaHPO₄ + 2H₂CO₃ – unlösliches Calciumdihydrogenphosphat entsteht.

Naturally, pH can also be lowered. Suitable options include alder cones, decaying wood, peat, peat extract, etc. However, everything depends on understanding the specific requirements of individual fish and plants. Some fish do not tolerate peat extract. Peat extract is often used for dips, for example, for tetra fish. Peat reduces pH. Decaying wood has its drawbacks. However, it can generally be said, especially for beginning aquarists, that using various materials in the aquarium is not as dangerous as most people think. On the contrary, their long-term and gradual activity makes their effect on pH change much more acceptable than using pure chemicals. Moreover, the nature of the acids leached from these materials often has a beneficial effect on fish health and plant growth. Humic acids, organic complexes, chelates, and other organic substances that are often a natural part of our fish and plants, even in their native habitats, play a role in this process.

Živorodky žijú v Južnej a Severnej Amerike vo vodách stredne tvrdých.

To increase pH, baking soda – NaHCO3 is used. However, when it comes to raising pH, this purely chemical method is used to a much lesser extent. Naturally, pH can be best increased by using a substrate. Carbonates contained in limestone, travertine commonly shift pH values to levels above 8. A very simple water adjustment is the use of salt. If we want to achieve a constant level of salt, do not forget to add salt during water changes and top-ups. Salt is used for some types of fish, especially for brackish species. Brackish species live in nature at the intersection of fresh and saltwater, for example, at the mouths of large rivers into the sea. Salt is also recommended for some livebearers. Livebearers live in waters of moderate hardness in South and North America. The appropriate dosage for guppies is 2-3 tablespoons of salt per 40 liters of water. For black mollies – a typical brackish species – even a little more, 5 tablespoons per 40 liters of water. We can use both table and sea salt, which can be obtained in stores. When starting with salt application, let’s be cautious at first, proceed carefully, and let the fish gradually get used to the salt, as osmotic pressure is tricky. A sudden change in conductivity caused by a sudden increase in NaCl will lead to negative stress – especially the surface – the fish’s skin is susceptible to damage. This property is utilized in treatment.

Salt is recommended for African lake cichlids. They contain relatively high concentrations of sodium – Na. In literature, up to 0.5 kg per 100 liters of water is mentioned, but I recommend one tablespoon per 40 liters of water. Salt appears to act as a transporter of metabolic processes and a catalyst. NaCl dissociates first into sodium cation and chlorine anion. Chlorine acts as a disinfectant, and sodium participates in biological reactions. Organic dyes, drugs can be successfully removed by activated carbon, partially by peat. Activated carbon has a wide range of applications. It is a relatively effective prevention against infection because it adsorbs a lot of harmful substances. It works as a filter. It has such a structure that it has a huge surface area, one mm3 provides up to 100 – 150 m2 of area. It is also used in commercially available filters. It can also partially reduce water hardness. However, it should be realized that its action is undesirable, especially in tanks with plants, due to its adsorption capacity. Activated carbon also removes nutrients from plants. Of course, its capabilities are exhaustible – after some time, the capacity becomes saturated, and it is necessary to either regenerate or replace the activated carbon. Regeneration is a chemical process, too costly for the aquarist, actually unnecessary. Activated carbon could be partially regenerated by boiling, but this is quite impractical. If we have powdered activated carbon available, we have won – its efficiency is practically the highest, and therefore we can use the smallest volume. The solution is to implement it into the filter, but also for example, to pour it into a stocking and place it in the tank. If some of it disperses, do not despair, activated carbon is harmless, it does not cloud the water.

In the water from the municipal water supply, various gaseous components are present, primarily intended for disinfection. They are essential for humans, but their impact on aquarium life is undesirable. One of these gases is chlorine, which is a well-known toxic gas, even for humans, but in low doses, it is harmless to humans and kills bacteria. Drinking water usually contains chlorine in the range of 0.1 – 0.2 mg/l, with a maximum of up to 0.5 mg/l. Chlorine is particularly harmful to fish gills. To rid water of chlorine, for example, letting it stand is suitable. There are products on the market based on sodium thiosulfate – Na2S2O3, which can remove chlorine from water. Allowing water to stand will rid it of chlorine in approximately one day. We just need to allow gases to escape – so no closed containers. Partially, immediate water filling will help, with the longest possible transport of water in the hose. A significant portion of chlorine will evaporate this way. There are also other gases in the water – complete degassing by standing occurs after four days. Various infusions are used for the swabs of some species, such as infusions of aquatic plants. These can literally prepare water – stabilize it, provide desired substances, such as trace elements, or possibly bind more harmful components. Wood is also used, oak, alder, willow. Brown coal is also suitable. Peat acts as a partial adsorbent. On the other hand, it adds humic acids and other organic substances to the water. Especially recently, ultraviolet light has been used for water treatment. Often also for its sterilization from pathogens. It can also be used in such a way – when the entire volume of water is affected – for example, in the case of an acute disease, but usually, the UV lamp is used as a filter, which effectively rids the water of various organism pathogens. Water treated with a sufficiently strong UV lamp, for example, does not become cloudy. Its use minimizes microbial infections. UV lamps are readily available on the market for aquarium supplies. As for a strong lamp – the wattage is determined by the volume of the tank. I do not recommend using the UV lamp continuously.
