Osvetlenie akvária

Hits: 26828

Light is an essential abiotic component that aquarium enthusiasts must consider in their homes. With its significant help, biological, biochemical, and physical processes take place in the aquarium. In the temperate zone where I am located, and probably many of you, the sunlight duration from fall to spring is insufficient. Therefore, providing artificial lighting is necessary. While sunlight is the primary source of energy, it’s not highly desirable in aquariums. In nature, sunlight doesn’t penetrate below the water surface, but in artificial tanks, it often hits the side walls, leading to algae growth on the glass and in the water. Additionally, water currents flow in valleys, which are often cut into the landscape, making it harder for sunlight to penetrate the water.

For these reasons, I recommend placing the aquarium in a darker part of the room and using artificial light during the day. It’s evident that some sunlight will still reach the entire setup. Fish probably wouldn’t enjoy swimming in constant darkness either. Aesthetic and functional aspects also play a role, especially when observing aquarium life. Fish can’t perceive light with their eyes as much as mammals or insects. They mainly sense light through their skin, covering their entire body surface. Excess light in the aquarium leads to green algae, while a lack of light results in brown algae. In the past, incandescent bulbs were used in breeding. However, this practice has been abandoned as they’re more suitable as a heat source than a light source. Compact fluorescent bulbs are a common alternative, but their efficiency is lower.

Fluorescent tubes are preferred for aquariums taller than 50 cm. High-Intensity Discharge (HQI) lamps are recommended for even better penetration in taller tanks. Regular maintenance and replacement of tubes are crucial for optimal performance. Precautions, such as using a ballast before the switch and starter, can extend the life of fluorescent tubes. Having a regular and objectively controllable light schedule is crucial for the aquarium’s well-being. Timers are better than relying on human intervention. Aquarium kits with plants should receive light for 12 – 14 hours a day for optimal growth. Providing light only in the evening is a misconception. The regularity of the light regime significantly affects the activity and overall behavior of fish. Some fish change their swimming patterns based on the light source’s direction. In conclusion, proper lighting is vital for a thriving aquarium, considering factors like light type, duration, and schedule.

Fish

The circulatory system of fish is simple, and the nervous system is similarly constructed with a simple brain and spinal cord. Fish breathe through gills, but some species have evolved alternative methods of air intake. For example, armored catfish breathe atmospheric oxygen through the intestinal mucosa. Labyrinth fish, like Betta fish, use a structure called the labyrinth for the same purpose. The labyrinth is a relatively complex organ that develops, for example, in Betta fish and gouramis around 50 days after their birth. Aquarium fish can live anywhere from 0.5 to 20 years. For a very rough comparison, smaller species tend to have shorter lifespans, while larger species can live longer. For instance, neon tetras live for 2 – 3 years, danios, tetras, and guppies for 4 – 5 years, killifish for 1 – 4 years, Ancistrus plecos for 8 – 10 years, and larger cichlids can live between 10 and 20 years. Corydoras catfish often live up to 18 years. Aquarium fish grow gradually, and it can be said that they grow throughout their entire lives. Generally, when compared to nature, non-predatory species usually do not reach the sizes they do in the wild, whereas predatory species often exceed their natural sizes. This is due to competition and our care and feeding. However, if we do not provide enough space for our fish, they simply won’t grow much. For example, keeping a blue acara in a 20-liter tank won’t allow it to reach its full size. But if we provide a larger tank over time, the fish can grow significantly. Alternatively, fish grow, but in a larger tank, they grow much faster. Some fish may not receive proper nutrition, and hobbyists say they are stunted.” This can be caused, for example, by feeding them differently than they were at another hobbyist’s place. There are numerous reasons for slow growth or its cessation. Some taxa genetically grow faster. For example, killifish must be born, mature, reproduce, and soon die within a single season — about six months.

Fish exhibit variable body temperatures; they are poikilothermic organisms, meaning they cannot regulate their own body heat and depend on the temperature of the surrounding environment. In practice, a fish in water at 25°C will have a body temperature of 25°C. It’s essential to realize that water has different thermal properties than, for example, air or metal. More energy is required to heat water than air, and similarly, more effort is needed to cool it down. Another article delves into these energy costs in more detail.

You may have noticed that a large body of water can influence the surrounding climate. Water retains heat, cooling the area in summer and warming it in winter. The same principle applies to the sea. Heat from our bodies dissipates much faster in water, about 200 times faster in the same temperature as in the air. It’s useful to know the thermal properties of water. Higher water temperatures often make fish feel better, but this temperature also shortens their lifespan. Since they cannot maintain a stable body temperature, their metabolism is more strained at higher temperatures than they are genetically adapted to, leading to increased fatigue. Higher temperatures can reduce the fish’s lifespan by half. Higher temperatures also decrease their overall condition and defensive capabilities over time. Fish can endure both high and very low temperatures in the short term. The temperature they can tolerate is 43°C. Beyond this limit, fish suffocate, lose coordination, and perish. Similar behavior occurs after the temperature drops below 5°C. It’s evident that some species are more resilient than others. I refer, of course, to common species from tropical and subtropical regions.

Fish perceive light relatively weakly. Compared to mammals, insects, and cephalopods, their vision is relatively poor. Their shortsighted eyes are not well-developed senses. Fish don’t have eyelids or tear glands. Fish can hear infrasound, although we know little about how they receive and process sound. In any case, they don’t hear our regular sounds. Their hearing organs are more organs of balance. The lateral line is an organ that can do a lot. It helps, for example, blind individuals orient themselves very effectively. They likely perceive waves, pressure, direction, flow, electromagnetic stimuli, food, and obstacles with great precision and adjust their behavior accordingly.

Fish also have touch and smell cells. Taste cells are found in their mouths, as expected, but a significant number is located on the fins. It’s interesting that a fish can touch its food with its fin and determine whether it is palatable or not. Fish are characterized by sexual dimorphism. However, some species of livebearers can, under certain circumstances, change their gender. This phenomenon is most common in the Mexican swordtail (Xiphophorus helleri). If there is a high prevalence of females in an aquarium, meaning a shortage of males, some females can change into males — developing a sword, gonopodium, etc. Many such males are, however, infertile. I have experienced this in my own practice when breeding swordtails for an extended period. Gender change also occurs in other livebearer species but not as frequently as in X. helleri. Concerning fertility, it’s interesting that the later the growth of the male’s sword begins — essentially maturing — the more fertile the male tends to be. However, as mentioned in the previous paragraph, males that change gender are often entirely infertile. Early males, where the sword and gonopodium develop at an early age, have a higher predisposition to infertility.

Plants

Aquatic plants, or rather water plants found in aquariums, are very closely related to their terrestrial counterparts. They contain vascular bundles called veins, which are usually visible. Plants respire throughout the entire 24-hour cycle, absorbing carbon dioxide and water during the day, with sufficient light, to produce carbohydrates (building materials), primarily for consumers, and life-giving oxygen. Unlike terrestrial plants, aquatic plants are adapted to the aquatic environment so that nutrient intake and respiration occur through the entire surface of the plant, often through the roots. Water plants do not have stomata — terrestrial plants have stomata on the lower side of their leaves. Plants produce oxygen through photosynthesis. When we observe oxygen production by plants — bubbles, the oxygen concentration in the cell has risen above 40 mg/l. However, due to the significantly different physical and chemical conditions and the overall character of aquatic plants, photosynthesis in aquatic plants occurs much slower than in terrestrial plants — thus, growth increments are smaller.

Fische

Fische nehmen Licht relativ schwach wahr.

Choroby rýb a ich liečenie

Hits: 66266

Ak by sa takémuto parazitu podarilo úspešne zdolať svoju svoju obeť, táto už ďalej mu nebude poskytovať živiny, a prejde resp. bude si hľadať nového kandidáta.

Existuje viacero humánnych metód, ktorými môžeme vykonať rybu usmrtiť: prudkým úderom ryby o pevný podklad, ponorením do sódovky, minerálky – využijeme silný narkotizačný účinok CO2 vo vyššej koncentrácii, rýchlym prerušením chrbtice – miechy tesne za hlavou ostrým predmetom, veľmi studenou vodou, môžeme si pomôcť napr. ľadom. Liečba Pri liečbe môžeme čiastočne úspešne využiť aktívne uhlie, ktoré adsorbuje množstvo nežiaducich látok, no predovšetkým UV-lampu.

FMC má širokospektrálne pôsobenie, obsahuje tri základné zložky: formalín, malachitovú zeleň a metylénovú modrú.

V prvom rade ide o jej veľkosť. Rastliny by som použil len plávajúce, napr. Ceratophyllum demersum, Najas apod.

Everyone probably knows the phrase: Healthy as a fish.” May your fish be healthy, but a more experienced aquarist would probably avoid this proverb. Infection germs spread successfully in water and often occur continually. Of course, fish have an immune system that prevents disease. However, this system can be disrupted by various factors, and that’s what we will focus on here. I would like to emphasize once again that, under normal conditions that we should provide them, fish can manage on their own. During an illness, the fish often changes its color depending on the species. It may fade or darken.

If we have reached the point where we cannot avoid disinfection, suitable options include potassium permanganate, vinegar, pure water, a salt and vinegar mixture, and boiling. Higher temperatures affect the condition and immunity of the fish over a longer period, although they may seem better and more beautifully colored in such water at first glance. Fish diseases are difficult to diagnose and treat, especially the internal ones. External diseases, often visible to the naked eye, are also present, although some, despite treatment, can lead to the death of a healthy, well-conditioned fish. Specialized veterinary facilities can also identify the type of disease from dead material. When using medicines, it is often advisable to remove plants from the tank if possible, as medications harm plants explicitly, and their effects are long-term. If this is not possible, it is advisable to use activated carbon after the treatment, which theoretically can bind some of the unbound components of medicines and reaction products. Of course, activated carbon must be removed after some time because it loses its absorption properties. The spread of the disease can be widespread, but it is often tied to a single host. This gives us the opportunity to get rid of the disease at the beginning by moving the affected individual to another tank. If such a parasite successfully overcomes its victim, it will no longer provide it with nutrients, and it will move on or find a new candidate. You may have noticed that your fish are gradually dying one by one over a longer period – this may be the result of just such a course of the disease.

Ichthyophthyriosis – is a fairly common fish disease colloquially called white spot disease.” It is caused by Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, which belongs to ciliates. Fish are covered with white spots.” The disease penetrates the aquarium through live food, foreign water, and introduced fish. Increased temperature – a salt bath described below – helps against white spot disease. It is also effective in suppressing white spot with malachite green, but it only cures the symptoms, and the actual disease remains in its early stages, so I do not recommend its use for treatment, but medications based on FMC are suitable.

Oodiniumosis – This disease is caused by Piscinoodinium pillularis.

Among the severe fish diseases that are almost incurable, we can certainly include mycobacteriosis – fish tuberculosis. It manifests mainly through pathological emaciation, a sunken abdominal area, and disinterest in food intake. It is necessary to note that this disease, like one of the few, can be transmitted to humans by touch. So, in the case of this disease, let’s not manipulate fish with our hands, avoid contact with an affected fish.

Bacterial fin rot is caused by microorganisms Pseudomonas, Aeromonas. It is a serious disease that can be effectively treated, for example, with the product Bactopur Direct. This SERA product stains the water yellowish-green, but more importantly, it significantly damages plants, so when using it, remove plants from the aquarium. Often, despite treatment, about half of the population may die.

Fungi – As a consequence of infection, various fungal infections occur on fish. Fungi attack the skin of fish in this case. Some fungi are quite treatable with acriflavine, FMC, and similar preparations, or even with salt. However, some are more serious, and stronger agents may be needed. However, I would like to point out that fungal spores can be practically present in the water all the time, but the diseased condition may not manifest itself. Fish have an immune system that, under optimal conditions, can defend itself. Especially aggressive fish are more effectively attacked by fungi if injured, but if the fish is in good condition, it will cope with it in a short time. Therefore, if we observe such an individual, we do not necessarily have to resort to treatment. Give a chance for natural development; intervene only if the infection is spreading, or the fish are weakened by some significant change.

Hydrops – Gas saturation. A relatively serious disease, which is mostly caused by improper nutrition. In case of suspicion, we should provide less proteinaceous components and more fibrous substances. The manifestation of the disease, however, is gradual, so its culmination takes a longer period.

Malawi bloat – a disease of African lake cichlids – deserves a separate article.

In case a fish suffers from an advanced form of a highly incurable disease, or if we are forced to euthanize fish for some other very serious reason, we should approach this issue professionally and with respect. There are several humane methods by which we can euthanize a fish: by a sharp blow of the fish against a solid surface, immersion in soda, mineral water – we use the strong narcotic effect of CO2 in a higher concentration, a quick break of the spine – the spinal cord just behind the head with a sharp object, very cold water, we can use ice, for example. Treatment During treatment, we can partially use activated carbon, which adsorbs many unwanted substances, but especially UV lamp. Ultraviolet radiation also has its uses in medicine, so it didn’t take long for a technical solution to the use of UV radiation to appear. The UV lamp is used either as a filter or directly on contaminated water in case of acute treatment. Its effectiveness is quite significant, for example, against bacterial species [1] such as Bacillus megatherium, Clostridium tetani, Dysentery bacilli, Micrococcus candidus, Myxobacterium tuberculosis, Psedomonas aerugenosa, Salmonella enteritidis, against viruses, ciliates, chlorella, and many other species and taxa. Many medicines used in aquaristics are contact in nature – that is, if they encounter a suitable object, they bind to it. They are usually liquid. Therefore, it is advisable to ensure water circulation in some way, such as filtration, aeration, or otherwise, and apply liquid medicine to the entire area affected by the outbreak. I have often encountered the use of preventive measures. There are special preparations for this purpose, and often medications in lower concentrations. I am fundamentally against it because by using special preparations, we weaken the immune system of our fish, which then cannot resist infection in more severe conditions. Such means suppress the natural resistance of the body. Prevention should be ensured in another way – through proper breeding conditions, diverse nutrition, and maintenance. If I were to consider using preventive means, only when the fish are in a too stressful environment – for example, in a store or somewhere where there are large changes in fish stocking, at most if we don’t want to use quarantine for new fish. When using any soluble medicines, we must consider removing active carbon from the aquarium. Because the treatment would be largely ineffective – activated carbon adsorbs to a large extent also the components contained in the medicines. Its effects should be used after treatment, as I mentioned elsewhere.

Salt bath – salt is used especially by more experienced aquarists as a remedy for some diseases. For example, to remove the so-called white spot (1 tablespoon per 30 liters of water), salt and increased temperature can be successfully used. Salt causes an increase in mucus secretion, with which the fish organism fights.

FMC – some medicines are sold under various trade names but are derivatives of FMC. FMC has a broad spectrum of action and contains three basic components: formalin, malachite green, and methylene blue. It is quite effective against some ectoparasites and fungi.

Potassium permanganate – potassium permanganate KMnO4 is used, for example, against carp pox, against algae. It acts disinfectant, and it is also used in medicine.

Trypaflavin is a relative of acriflavine and proflavine.

Against ectoparasites, methylene blue and malachite green are used. Chemically malachite green belongs to triphenylmethanes.

Other medicines include metronidazole – entizol. FMC is also commercially available under the same name FMC, but also, for example, as Multimedical.

Antibiotics are also used in aquaristics: tetracycline, streptomycin.

Quarantine Quarantine consists of the spatial isolation of organisms. Often, fish are treated in quarantine for some disease. Quarantine is used after transporting fish, that is, if we buy new fish, we can use the quarantine tank. How to arrange such a tank? First of all, it’s about its size. It must correspond to our fish. On the bottom, we use only gravel, possibly coarser sand, or we can have a quarantine tank without a bottom. Filtration, if we treat fish, would be problematic because drugs adversely affect microorganisms in it. Therefore, I would only use a simple filter that would perform mechanical filtration – an internal foam filter would be sufficient. Aeration would I introduce, but is not a necessity. Lighting does not have to meet the strictest criteria. Plants must only be floating, such as Ceratophyllum demersum, Najas, etc. Quarantine is also suitable for fish that were attacked by other fish in a tank. Some fish species suffer greatly after isolation in quarantine. In particular, socially living fish often suffer greatly from the accelerated course of the disease after isolation. It is a very difficult situation to solve, where such individuals die rather from the consequences of the change than from the disease that has been tormenting them all the time.

Maintaining the temperature in a room for tropical aquariums is sometimes not enough. It’s not just about insufficient temperature but about a stable temperature. I recommend keeping fish species whose temperature requirements for water are the same or at least similar. Large temperature fluctuations are not suitable. Some hobbyists, including myself, occasionally use a partial decrease in temperature during water changes – acclimatization. This fact stimulates reproduction in certain fish species, such as armored catfish and killifish. It is a partial simulation of the rainy season. It is sometimes beneficial if the water temperature fluctuates within a range of 12°C between day and night. In most cases, aquarists in our temperate zone tend to increase or at least maintain a certain water temperature to prevent it from dropping below a set limit. For this purpose, heaters are used. If cooling the aquarium is necessary, professional solutions can be more expensive. Peltier modules can be used, for example. Using a fan in front of the aquarium can partially lower the temperature, especially in smaller tanks.

Modern heaters come with a thermostat, meaning they can automatically turn off when a certain temperature is reached. I do not recommend using heaters without a thermostat nowadays – you might forget about them, and in smaller tanks, you could literally cook your fish. For every liter of the aquarium, I usually need 0.51 W heater power. Less than 0.5 W may not be sufficient, especially for tanks higher than 50 cm, and more than 1 W can cause a catastrophe relatively quickly in case of a prolonged absence and a device malfunction. When changing or topping up the water, it’s advisable to disconnect the heater from the power supply. In such a case, part of the heater (especially those with higher power) can be extremely hot, and adding usually colder water after its depletion can cause it to crack.

Regarding the relationship between water temperature and fish, it can be said that although lower temperatures can lead to various diseases, parasites usually thrive better at lower temperatures. On the other hand, colder water has favorable effects – it increases the maximum age and condition of fish. Do not overheat more than necessary, but do not let the fish get too cold either. For more on this issue, refer to Róbert Toman’s article. Increasing the water temperature is often used in disease treatment. Most fish commonly kept by hobbyists worldwide come from tropical and subtropical regions, where our room temperature is suitable. That is a temperature that suits humans as well. Of course, there are differences – discus fish prefer higher temperatures, danios, neon tetras prefer cooler water (20°C). Water temperature has a relationship with the concentration of oxygen in the water. The higher the water temperature, the less oxygen is in the water. Water temperature also affects reproductive instincts, both for fish and aquatic plants.

Plants are also sensitive to temperature. Although the manifestations are not as visible to the eye as in animals, they are irreversible. Conversely, I would say that individual plants are more resistant to temperature extremes than mobile fish, whose appearance is not affected by active movement. Individual plants have their optimum temperature. This is the reason for the different appearance of plants in various tanks. Of course, it is just one factor, but it is essentially limiting. For example, individual leaves can be darker, paler, grow further apart or closer together, and the overall plant may exhibit higher production, etc. Or, in some cases, plants may die at very high or very low temperatures. Generally, the highest long-term temperature suitable for common aquarium plants is 27°C. In my practice, I often encountered the opinion that plants would not survive in higher temperatures. This situation probably occurs in most households, especially in July when summer heat approaches forty degrees. I would like to point out that in nature, during the peak of the vegetation period, the sun’s intensity is high over the water. And at that time, plants literally grow like crazy, often blooming. The same will happen in our aquariums.

Okrem toho sú motýľom poskytované ovocné šťavy a med (schmetterlinghaus.at).

Schmetterlinghaus is located in Vienna near Burgarten. It houses butterflies and is referred to as an insectarium.

Just 100 meters from Albertina and 200 meters from the State Opera, there is a tropical oasis of peace and relaxation – the Butterfly House. Approximately 500 freely living butterflies can be found here throughout the year (schmetterlinghaus.at), representing around 40 species originally from Costa Rica, Suriname, Thailand, and the Philippines. The temperature is maintained at 26°C, with air humidity at 80% (schmetterlinghaus.at). Attractive exotic plants are chosen based on the needs of the butterflies. Blooming plants produce nectar, which serves as the main food source for the butterflies. In addition, the butterflies are provided with fruit juices and honey (schmetterlinghaus.at).
