Hits: 3947

V roku 1870 vznikol kameňolom a teheľňa. Pôvodný asfaltový pohraničný chodník, tzv. „signálka“ z čias železnej opony, dnes slúži ako cyklotrasa (Wikipedia).

Pôvodný názov je Nová Ves (devinskanovaves.sk). Ďalšie historické pomenovania: Nova Wass, Divin-Új-Falu, Wyfalu, Theben-Neudorf, Dévényújfalu, Neudorf an der March (Wikipedia).

Hospodárky a strategický význam mal most cez rieku Moravu.

Devínska Nová Ves lies at an elevation of 172 meters above sea level. Around 16,000 inhabitants live here on an area of 24.22 km². It is located on the edge of the Záhorie Lowland and at the foot of Devínska Kobyla. It consists of the following parts: Devínske Jazero, Kostolné, Podhorské, Paulinské, Sídlisko Stred, and Vápenka. Devínska Nová Ves is an important railway junction. The Volkswagen Slovakia automotive plant is located here. In the past, there was a narrow-gauge railway connecting the present station with Devín. Before World War II, it was used to transport ore from the western slopes of the Devín Carpathians. A lime kiln also operated here. In the 18th century, a sand quarry was built on Sandberg with a cableway that transported sand to ships on the River. In 1870, a stone quarry and a brickyard were established. The original asphalt border path, the so-called “signálka” from the Iron Curtain era, now serves as a cycle route (Wikipedia).

The original name of the settlement was Nová Ves (devinskanovaves.sk). Other historical names include Nova Wass, Divin-Új-Falu, Wyfalu, Theben-Neudorf, Dévényújfalu, and Neudorf an der March (Wikipedia). Devínska Nová Ves was first mentioned in writing in 1451 (devinskanovaves.sk). It was originally a settlement belonging to the Devín estate (information board). Unique finds document Slavic–Avar settlement. The site contains one of the oldest and most important burial grounds from the 7th to 9th centuries. On two hills above the Morava floodplain stood two Great Moravian fortresses in the 9th century, in the area known as Slovinec. On the lower hill was the fortified settlement “Na skale”, protected by a two-meter-high defensive rampart, still visible in the terrain today. The upper fortress, called “Na pieskoch”, stood on a higher plateau above the yellow cliffs of Sandberg. Its fortifications consisted of a massive embankment reinforced on the south by a ditch. From these strongholds it was possible to control the surrounding area, especially the vast Moravian Plain across the Morava River. It is not excluded that these fortresses were identical with Dowina, the stronghold of Prince Rastislav, which, according to the Annals of Fulda, was unsuccessfully attacked in 869 by Charles, son of Louis the German, King of East Francia (Wikipedia). Devínska Nová Ves was originally part of the Devín estate (information board).

In the 1530s, the settlement was plundered by foreign mercenaries invited to defend Bratislava from the Turks (information board). Also in the 1530s, Croats settled here and soon outnumbered the original population. This led, in 1552, to the name Chorvátska Nová Ves (“Croatian New Village”). The name Devínska Nová Ves has been attested only since the 18th century. Since 1972, it has been a borough of Bratislava (devinskanovaves.sk). Even today, the largest Croatian minority in Slovakia lives here, and the annual Festival of Croatian Culture takes place. Notable natives of Devínska Nová Ves include the writers Peter Pišťanek and Rudolf Sloboda (Wikipedia). After 1972, Devínska Nová Ves expanded significantly with new housing estates and industries, particularly in the automotive sector. It was incorporated into Bratislava. Economically and strategically important was the bridge across the Morava River. The Gänserndorf – Devínska Nová Ves – Bratislava railway line, opened in 1848, was the first steam railway in Hungary (information board).

Záhorie, kraj hraničný, ležiaci za horami

Hits: 5467

Záhorie si pamätá pochodovanie rímskych légií, zjednotenie slovanských kmeňov do Veľkomoravskej ríše. Viedli tu nemeckých rytierov i českých kniežat.

Chvojnícka pahorkatina má tri časti: Skalický hájik, Unínsku a Senickú pahorkatinu.

V 5. a 6. storočí sem prichádzali , ktorých atakovali avarské kočovné kmene. Tatársky vpád v rokoch 1241 a 1242 spôsobil zánik dreveno-hlinitých hradov a stavali si kamenné . Od roku 1221 mala Viedeň právo skladu. To znamenalo, že tu tovar museli vyložiť a ponúknuť domácim kupcom. Zároveň boli nútení kupovať od viedenských kupcov drahý tovar privezený zo západu. sa snažili kupci obísť. Kupci prebrodili Dunaj až v Ostrihome a pokračovali po Českej ceste do Trnavy, cez do Jablonice, Senice, Holíča a odtiaľ do Brna, Prahy a veľkomiest západnej Európy.

Myjava, Vrbovce a Sobotište pytlikárstvom.

Iné kultúrne : Malacká hudobná , Malacké kultúrne leto, divadelné podujatie Zejdeme se na hambálku a Jablkové hodovanie v Malackách, Stupave a Jabloňovom, Habánsky hodový jarmok vo Veľkých Levároch, Detský medzinárodný folklórny festival Mravenec v Plaveckom Štvrtku, Záhradná galéria Alojza Machaja v Plaveckom Štvrtku, Pivný festival a Dni zelá v Stupave, Dedinka remesiel a umení Abeland pri Lozorne, Dni hrozna a vína v Lozorne, Sviatok Pomoravia v Jabloňovom, Súťaž vo varení guláša v Rohožníku, folklórne podujatie Festival Podhoran, Krumpolový deň, gastronomické podujatie Varíme vianočnú kapustnicu v Sološnici, Dožinková slávnosť v Plaveckom Petri, Trdlofest, hudobné podujatie Musica sacra, vinohradnícky Deň otvorených búd v Skalici, Tereziánske dni, Zámocké pivné v Holíči, Hradné slávnosti v Podbranči, Letecký deň a Martinské svetlonosenie v Senici, Preteky dračích lodí na Kunovskej priehrade (Michaela Janotová, Eduard Timko).

Záhorie is a region situated between the Czech Republic to the north, Austria to the west, the Small Carpathians to the southeast, and the Danube River to the south. Záhorie has a rich history, witnessing the march of Roman legions, the unification of Slavic tribes into the Great Moravian Empire, and the presence of German knights and Czech princes. For centuries, it has been a borderland. With an area of approximately 2500 km2, Záhorie is home to nearly 300,000 residents (zahorie.sk). The name Záhorie has its roots in the 17th century, derived from the Latin term „Processus transmontanus,“ which referred to the region behind the Small Carpathians, beyond the mountains. Other historical names include Moravské pole na Slovensku, Slovak Pomoravie, Moravská nížina, and Moravský dol. Administratively, Záhorie has never formed a unified entity (zahorie.sk). It includes the districts of Skalica, Senica, Malacky, partially Myjava, and Bratislava – Záhorská Bystrica. The majority of the territory is characterized by the Záhorie Lowland (zahorie.sk).

Human economic activities led to the movement of sand, prompting afforestation of the loose sands in the Záhorie Lowland during the 16th and 17th centuries. However, the natural character of the forests on windy sands was altered by the extensive planting of pine trees (zahorie.sk). Today, Záhorie is known for its pine and riparian forests and sandy soil. Winds are frequent in this region (lozorno.sk). Originally, the Záhorie Lowland was a heavily marshy area with swamps, lakes, and dead river branches. Soft riparian forests still exist on the floodplains of the Morava and Myjava rivers. On higher elevations, there are hard riparian forests. The wetland forests on permanently waterlogged peat soils, such as in the nature reserve Bezdné near Plavecký Štvrtok, are unique. From a botanical perspective, is also remarkable (zahorie.sk).

The Záhorie Lowland is divided into two parts: the Borská Lowland and the Chvojnická Hills. The central part of the Borská Lowland consists of windswept sands northeast of Lozorno and Malacky. To the north, sand dunes rise in Lakšárska Hills. Along the Morava and Myjava rivers, there are the river basins of Myjavská and Dolnomoravská niva, gravel-sand deposits disturbed by river meandering. Between Cerová and Zohor, there is the Podmalokarpatská Depression, where extensive marshy areas formed. The Chvojnická Hills have three parts: Skalický hájik, Unínska, and Senická pahorkatina. Thick layers of loess and loess-like soils are found here. Záhorie also features karst areas in the Small Carpathians – Borinský and Plavecký kras. The Myjavská Hills extend between the Small and White Carpathians (zahorie.sk). The Záhorie Lowland does not have a dense river network, and human activities have significantly altered the original network. The region is relatively dry, with major rivers being the Morava, Myjava, and Rudava. However, significant groundwater reserves are found, especially in the sandy and loamy sands. Numerous water reservoirs, gravel pits, and ponds are also present (zahorie.sk). Most lakes in Záhorie were formed by gravel and sand mining. Caves such as Deravá skala and Pohanská are part of the Malé Karpaty karst (lozorno.sk). Birds of prey, including the peregrine falcon, nest on the rocks and ruins of castles in the Small and White Carpathians (zahorie.sk). Additionally, oil and natural gas deposits have been discovered near Gbely, and industrial mining has been ongoing since 1914 (lozorno.sk).

Záhorie is one of the earliest settled areas in Slovakia. Among the oldest inhabited sites are the Deravá skala cave near Plavecký and a Paleolithic settlement near Sološnica. In the 6th to 5th centuries BCE, the Scythians arrived, followed by the Celts. Settlements from the later Iron Age have been found in places like Myjava, , and Šaštín. The Celts built well-fortified settlements, excelled in metallurgy, and produced tools, weapons, and jewelry (zahorie.sk). The extensive oppidum on Pohanská hill was constructed during this period (lozorno.sk). The Germanic Markomani and Quadi displaced the Celts and Dacians around the turn of the eras. Their scattered tribes also reached Záhorie. The last Germanic tribe in Záhorie were the Lombards in the first half of the 6th century. In the 5th and 6th centuries, Slavs arrived, facing attacks from Avar nomadic tribes. From the time of the Great Moravian Empire, settlements and forts are known in Podbranč, Plavecký Štvrtok, Senica, Rohožník, Stupava, Zohor, Vyšná pri Morave, and Devín (zahorie.sk). After the establishment of Hungary, Záhorie became a border area with the Kingdom of Bohemia and Austria. To protect the borders, tribes like the Sikuls and Plavcs were summoned, and local names like Plavecký hrad, Plavecké Podhradie, Sekule, and others bear witness to their presence (lozorno.sk). The Tatar invasion in 1241 and 1242 led to the destruction of wooden and earthen castles, prompting the construction of stone castles. From 1221, Vienna had the right to store goods, meaning that merchants had to unload and offer their goods to local merchants. Simultaneously, they were forced to buy expensive goods brought from the west by Viennese merchants. Merchants sought to bypass Vienna, crossing the Danube at Esztergom and continuing along the Czech Road to Trnava, over the Small Carpathians to Jablonica, Senica, Holíč, and from there to , Prague, and major cities in Western Europe. This decision elevated the Czech Road to a fundamental European route, around which feudal castle estates began to form in the second half of the 13th and 14th centuries (zahorie.sk).

After the Battle of Mohács in 1526 and the Turkish campaign in 1663, the Slovak population in Záhorie decreased. Croatian colonists became the new ethnic group settling the hills around Myjava, Dúbravka, Lamač, and Záhorská Bystrica. In 1528, Hutterites, a reformist Anabaptist group known as Habans, arrived in western Slovakia. Sobotište became their center. They lived as one large family, collectively managing their affairs, and no one was allowed to have private property. They were involved mainly in pottery and ceramics. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Skalica gained renown for its fine wool. Brezová pod Bradlom became a center for leather and linen production. Myjava, Vrbovce, and Sobotište were known for their bag making. In Šaštín, a cardboard factory was established in 1736, which, until its demise in 1847, was the largest and most famous manufactory in Slovakia. It was one of the largest in Europe, employing almost 20,000 people, with its spinning centers in Lower Austria, especially in Vienna. A majolica manufactory was founded in Holíč. Moreover, it became a center for sheep breeding improvement. In the 1770s, Skalica, with 5,000 inhabitants, was among the ten largest cities in Slovakia. In 1848-49, Myjava was one of the centers of the national movement. The first national assembly was held here, declaring the Slovak National Council as a representative body (zahorie.sk).

In the summer, the largest and most significant meetings of military historical vehicles and clubs of military history in Slovakia, named Sahara and Slovak Sands, take place here. Other cultural events include the Malacky Music Spring, Malacky Cultural Summer, theatrical event Zejdeme se na hambálku, and Apple Harvesting in Malacky, Stupava, and Jabloňovo. Haban Festival in Veľké Leváre, International Children’s Folklore Festival Mravenec in Plavecký Štvrtok, Garden Gallery Alojz Machaj in Plavecký Štvrtok, Beer Festival and Cabbage Cooking Days in Stupava, Village of Crafts and Arts Abeland near Lozorno, Days of Grapes and Wine in Lozorno, Pomoravia Festival in Jabloňovo, Goulash Cooking Competition in Rohožník, folk event Festival Podhoran, Krumpolový deň, gastronomic event Cooking Christmas Sauerkraut in Sološnica, Harvest Festival in Plavecký Petřich, Trdlofest, musical event Musica Sacra, vine-growing Open Barn Day in Skalica, Tereziánske dni, Castle Beer Festivities in Holíč, Castle Celebrations in Podbranč, Aviation Day and ‚s Lantern Parade in Senica, Dragon Boat Races on Kunovská Reservoir (Michaela Janotová, Eduard Timko).

Habaner Festival in Veľké Leváre, International Children’s Folklore Festival Mravenec in Plavecký Štvrtok, Garden Gallery Alojz Machaj in Plavecký Štvrtok, Beer Festival und Cabbage Cooking Days in Stupava, Village of Crafts and Arts Abeland bei Lozorno, Days of Grapes and Wine in Lozorno, Pomoravia Festival in Jabloňovo, Goulash Cooking Competition in Rohožník, folk event Festival Podhoran, Krumpolový deň, gastronomic event Cooking Christmas Sauerkraut in Sološnica, Harvest Festival in Plavecký Petřich, Trdlofest, musical event Musica Sacra, vine-growing Open Barn Day in Skalica, Tereziánske dni, Castle Beer Festivities in Holíč, Castle Celebrations in Podbranč, Aviation Day and Martin’s Lantern Parade in Senica, Dragon Boat Races on Kunovská Reservoir (Michaela Janotová, Eduard Timko).

Stupava

Hits: 7318

Počas troch rokov som do Stupavy a jej okolia chodil veľmi často.

Mesto Stupava sa leží medzi západnými svahmi Malých Karpát a južnou časťou Záhorskej nížiny vo výške 174 metrov nad morom (stupava.sk).

V marci sa koná Veľkonočná výstava kraslíc a výšiviek, v júli Svätojakubský jarmok, v auguste Stupavské hody, festival country hudby Stupavský širák a  kapusty – Deň zelá. V októbri Svätomartinský jarmok. V novembri Mikulášsky jarmok (Wikipedia).

Územie Stupavy bolo osídlené už v dobe bronzovej. Prvými etnicky známymi obyvateľmi boli (stupava.sk). Rimania tu zrejme v období markomanských vojen (160 – 180) postavili menšiu stanicu na nevysokej vyvýšenine, na ktorej už predtým stála germánska osada. Vznikol tu rozsiahly dvorec, chránený obvodovým múrom 70 x 70 metrov. Pobyt dokazujú nálezy zbraní, zbytky krúžkového panciera, keramika, šperky, mince, fragmenty sklených nádob a hospodárske náradie. Pridaním koncovky ava vzniklo pomenovanie Stupava (Wikipedia).

Stupava – a smaller town near . Funnily enough, I used to visit Stupava quite often, especially in the past, while working on my thesis. Over three years, I frequented Stupava and its surroundings. After 14 years, I returned with a camera and was amazed at how the center around the castle has changed.

The town of Stupava is situated between the western slopes of the Small Carpathians and the southern part of the Záhorská Lowland at an elevation of 174 meters above sea level (stupava.sk). Covering an area of 6,718 hectares, with an altitude of 182 meters above sea level, it had a population of 10,597 at the beginning of 2016. The German name for the town is Stampfen, and in Hungarian, it’s Stomfa (Majtán, 1998). The village’s cadastral territory includes a part of the natural reserve Pod Pajštúnom. The first written mention of the village dates back to 1269. The southern part of Stupava includes Mást, which became part of the town in 1953. Some parts of Mást are: Dzílečky, Kremenice, Kopce, Noviny, Malé grunty, Sedličky, Záhradky, Záhumenice, Písky, Hajpród, Nová hora, Dolná hora, Grefty, Trenky, Lingráby, Lintávy. Parts of the town: Mást, Dúbravy, Kremenica, Kolónia, Vinohrady (Wikipedia).

Stupava Lake is located in the town center, near the castle. Following it is a park that resembles more of an arboretum than an urban park. The Baroque castle lies on the edge of the park in the historical center of Stupava. Originally, there was a water castle on its site, which became the center of the Pajštún estate in 1280. In the mid-17th century, the Pálfys rebuilt it into an early Baroque fortified castle. The natural park was established in 1867 by the Károlyis. The park area used to house a Count’s brewery, mill, and several ponds (Prokeš, Prokešová). Currently, the castle serves as a senior home (stupava.sk). In the park, you can find, for example, Nordmann fir, Lawson’s cypress, ginkgo biloba, Chinese juniper, tulip tree, Japanese pagoda tree. The park also features a chestnut alley (stupava.sk). The Roman Catholic Church of St. Stephen was built in the mid-14th century as a church castle. It often changed its appearance due to extensions (stupava.sk).

In the late 18th century, the master potter Štefan Putz settled in Stupava, bringing with him the knowledge of making Haban ceramics cast with lead-tin glaze (faience). His successors were Ján and Ferdinand Kostkovci, later Ferdiš Kostka, who, in addition to traditional pottery, also engaged in figurative art that made him famous. He became the first national artist in the history of Czechoslovakia. His kiln is the only preserved Haban kiln in Central Europe (stupava.sk). Stupava was also home to Ján Nálepka, writer Rudo Moric. The historical fencing group Ursus operates in Stupava. Several traditional events take place in the town. In March, there is an Easter exhibition of eggs and embroideries, in July St. James‘ Fair, in August Stupava festivities, the Stupava Country Music Festival, and Cabbage Festivities – Cabbage Day. In October, there is St. ‚s Fair in November, St. Nicholas‘ Fair (Wikipedia).

The territory of Stupava was settled in the Bronze Age. The first ethnically known inhabitants were Celts (stupava.sk). The Romans likely built a smaller station on a low elevation here during the Marcomannic Wars (160 – 180), where a Germanic settlement already stood. An extensive courtyard, protected by a 70 x 70 meter wall, was established. Artifacts found include weapons, remains of ring armor, ceramics, jewelry, coins, fragments of glass vessels, and agricultural tools. Slavic settlement evidence includes a burial ground with ceramic items from the 6th – 9th centuries in the local Mást district. Hungarian King Belo IV mentioned Stupava for the first time in 1269 in a donation deed, calling it Ztumpa. In the second half of the 13th century, the Stupava Stone Castle was built, later known as Pajštún, the seat of the Pajštún and Stupava estates. The last owners, the Károlyis, abandoned it in 1945. The local market and famous fairs were known throughout the region, leading to the establishment of a customs station in the town where a three percent fee was collected for transported goods. The most important crops were flax and hemp, from which oil was extracted by pressing. Mills for pressing, called „stupy,“ were built on the Stupava Stream (stupava.sk). Hungarians adopted this name and even during the times of Great Moravia pronounced the name Stomfa (pronounced Štomfa) with a nasal sound, stonpa. Later, in the evolution of language, the nasal sound disappeared, and „stupa“ stabilized. Adding the suffix „ava“ resulted in the name Stupava (Wikipedia).

Šaštín-Stráže

Hits: 5059

V roku 1987 baziliku navštívila Matka Tereza (mestosastinstraze.sk).

Stráže boli pred rokom 1960 samostatnou obcou (mestosastinstraze.sk). Zámok mal vraj podzemné spojenie so šaštínskym zámkom.

Šaštín-Stráže is a town in the northern part of . It is home to the beautiful Basilica of the Seven Sorrows (Peter Kaclík). With an area of 42 km2, the town has a population of 5015 inhabitants. It is situated at an elevation of 256 meters above sea level (mestosastinstraze.sk) in the central part of Záhorie Lowland, along the middle course of the Myjava River (Wikipedia).

Šaštín-Stráže is a renowned Marian pilgrimage site (mestosastinstraze.sk). The first mention of Šaštín dates back to 1218 when it was called Saswar (mestosastinstraze.sk), Sasvár. However, the territory of Šaštín has been inhabited since the second half of the 10th century. The name Šaštín is derived from the Hungarian „sás,“ meaning reed, as the area was covered with numerous marshes. In 1218, Imrich II donated the Sasín estate to the Lebény Monastery. Šaštín Castle was the most important watchtower of the entire Záhorie region, built as a water castle along the Myjava River and later on a hill as an advanced guard (Stráže nad Myjavou) (mestosastinstraze.sk). In 1733, the Pauline order undertook the construction of the pilgrimage church and monastery in Šaštín (mestosastinstraze.sk). The Paulines, also known as Piarists, were followers of Saint Paul. Today, the monastery and basilica are under the administration of the Salesian order (Wikipedia).

The Basilica was elevated from a church in 1964, becoming the first basilica in Slovakia (mestosastinstraze.sk). During pilgrimages, Šaštín attracts tens of thousands of pilgrims (Wikipedia). In 1987, Mother Teresa visited the basilica (mestosastinstraze.sk). The basilica has two towers, and near it, there is a monastery, a chapel, and a column with the Holy Trinity statue. The church in Šaštín dates back to the year 1400. Next to it is the Loretto Chapel from the 17th century. The calvary near the cemetery was built in 1798 (mestosastinstraze.sk) and is noteworthy for being on level ground (mestosastinstraze.sk). South of the Basilica of the Seven Sorrows are two ponds with an area of 1820.31 m2, built by the Paulines for fish farming (mestosastinstraze.sk). In the 18th century, the husband of Maria Theresa, Francis I, established the first Hungarian textile manufacturing factory for fabric production – Kartúnka – in Šaštín Castle. In the 19th century, it couldn’t sustain itself, and later a sugar factory operated there. The Jewish synagogue dates back to 1852 (mestosastinstraze.sk). Singer Jana Kocianová was born in Šaštín, and writer Dušan Dušek resides there (Wikipedia).

Stráže was an independent municipality before 1960 (mestosastinstraze.sk). From 1961 to 1971, the town was called Šaštínske Stráže (mestosastinstraze.sk). The village originated in the Middle Ages, with its church dating back to 1339. Stráže was one of the oldest villages in Záhorie, serving as the outpost of Šaštín Castle (mestosastinstraze.sk). The first known written mention of Stráže is from 1392 (mestosastinstraze.sk). In the 1960s, hot water was drilled but remains unused today (mestosastinstraze.sk). The Belvedere summer palace was a favorite retreat for Maria Theresa and was still inhabited at the end of the 18th century. Vineyards surrounded the castle, and the caretaker of the 14 to 16 cellars had a separate residence called „Kellermajstrom,“ which still stood in 1921. The castle reportedly had an underground connection to Šaštín Castle. Belvedere Castle was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century, but the cellars stood until 1918. A reminder of the castle’s existence is the preserved castle well, 60 meters deep, connected by underground passages to the cellars (mestosastinstraze.sk).
