Skalničky

Hits: 187

Termín „skalničky“ v záhradníckej praxi zahŕňa najmä alpínske a subalpínske , prípadne iné nízke druhy z kamenistých stanovíšť, pestované v skalkách, štrkových záhonoch, korytách, štrbinách múrikov či v alpíniách (uniba.sk). Preto sa v záhradách často viac rieši drenáž a zimná pred dažďom než samotný mráz (rhs.org.uk).

Skalničky si vyvinuli celý rad morfologických a fyziologických adaptácií, vďaka ktorým zostávajú nízkeho vzrastu, no často bohato kvitnú výraznými farbami aj v takýchto nehostinných podmienkach (rhs.org.uk).

Zároveň ochlpenie znižuje prúdenie vzduchu priamo pri povrchu listu, čím pomáha udržiavať tenkú vrstvu vlhkého vzduchu a brzdí nadmernú stratu vody suchým vetrom (ubc.ca). Chlpy tiež čiastočne odrážajú viditeľné slnečné a zachytávajú tepelné žiarenie pri povrchu rastliny, čím ju izolujú pred nočným chladom (asknature.org). Voskový povlak alebo silná kutikula na listoch plní podobnú funkciu – odráža časť slnečného žiarenia a bráni vysychaniu. Vysokohorské druhy majú často sivozelené až striebristé práve vďaka vrstve chĺpkov či vosku (ubc.ca).

Z hľadiska úspechu pestovania rozhoduje viac mikroklíma než „papierové“ podmienky lokality: drenáž (najmä proti zimnej premokrenosti), zrnitý minerálny substrát, stabilné , správna orientácia ( vs. polotieň), a ochrana citlivých druhov pred kombináciou mrazu a vlhka (rhs.org.uk).

V prirodzených horských ekosystémoch môžu skalničky stabilizovať substrát (drobné sutiny a štrbiny), zachytávať organický materiál a spomaľovať povrchový odtok (rhs.org.uk). Tvarovať mikroklímu – vankúšové rastliny dokážu vytvoriť priaznivejšie mikroprostredie pre klíčenie a rast iných druhov (facilitácia) (Lohengrin A. Cavieres, Ernesto I. Badano, Angela Sierra-Almeida, Susana Gómez-González, Marco A. Molina-Montenegro). Kompaktné vankúše a ružice zároveň vytvárajú vlastnú mikroklímu – vo vnútri trsu je vzduch menej extrémny, v strede prízemnej ružice môže byť až o 10 °C vyššia než okolie počas chladných nocí a naopak nižšia počas horúceho dňa (Peter Lupták).

Malé, tuhé a často sukulentné listy sú ďalším znakom mnohých skalničiek. Malá listová plocha redukuje výpar vody a tuhá (kožovitá) štruktúra listov s hrubou kutikulou znižuje riziko poškodenia silným UV žiarením a vetrom (swisshikingvacations.com).

Prakticky to znamená vysoký podiel minerálnej frakcie a zároveň stabilnú štruktúru, aby sa pôda v zime nepreliala a v lete nezaliala do „blata“ (rhs.org.uk). Najčastejšia príčina zlyhania pestovania je kombinácia chladu a premokrenia (rhs.org.uk).

Mnohé skalničky sú vyslovene slnečné, no časť alpínskych ružicových druhov prosperuje aj v polotieni, najmä ak polotieň znamená chránenie pred letným úpalom a vysúšaním listov (rhs.org.uk). Mnohým skalničkám prospieva chladné obdobie pred klíčením – „zimný výsev“ do vonkajších misiek alebo stratifikácia) (alpinegardensociety.net). Skalničky majú svoj v rôznych typoch alpínskych a subalpínskych biotopov. V Karpatoch, Alpách a ďalších pohoriach Európy tvoria súčasť alpínskej vegetácie nad hranicou lesa. Typické prirodzené stanovištia zahŕňajú alpínske a hole, skalné steny, sutinové svahy a morény (swisshikingvacations.com).

Pravidelná kontrola a odstraňovanie zahnívjúcich častí (Miroslav Tatíček). Mnohé skalničky sú vždyzelené, vďaka čomu môžu okamžite začať fotosyntézu (ubc.ca). Niektoré vysokohorské druhy si dokonca vytvárajú prírodnú „nemrznúcu zmes”– akumulujú v bunkách cukry, polyoly či proteíny, ktoré znižujú bod mrazu bunkovej šťavy a chránia tkanivá pred poškodením mrazom. Buriny sú veľmi nepriateľské, ak sa zakorenia, môžu rýchlo potlačiť skalničky (ruxley-manor.co.uk).

Lohengrin A. CavieresErnesto I. BadanoAngela Sierra-AlmeidaSusana Gómez-GonzálezMarco A. Molina-Montenegro: Positive interactions between alpine plant species and the nurse cushion plant Laretia acaulis do not increase with elevation in the Andes of central Chile

Rock garden plants are low-growing, compact species and cultivars that naturally occur on rocks, screes, stony slopes, in crevices, and in open sites exposed to extremes of wind, cold, drought, high UV radiation, and fluctuating moisture. In gardens they are cultivated primarily for their small stature, longevity, ability to grow in minimal substrate, and for their striking flowering at a time when other perennials are only beginning to develop. In horticultural practice, the term “rock garden plants” refers mainly to alpine and subalpine species, as well as other low-growing plants from rocky habitats, cultivated in rock gardens, gravel beds, troughs, wall crevices, or alpine houses (uniba.sk). Many rock plants are adapted to cold and drought, but not to winter wetness. Therefore, in gardens, drainage and protection from winter rain are often more important than frost itself (rhs.org.uk).

Rock garden plants have developed a wide range of morphological and physiological adaptations that allow them to remain low-growing while often flowering profusely and in vivid colors even under such inhospitable conditions (rhs.org.uk). Their typical botanical traits arise from the stresses of their natural habitats and frequently recur across genera.

Cushion growth form reduces wind impact, stabilizes surface temperatures, and improves water management (Lohengrin A. Cavieres, Ernesto I. Badano, Angela Sierra-Almeida, Susana Gómez-González, Marco A. Molina-Montenegro).

Rosette growth (basal rosettes, often with thickened leaves) minimizes water loss, enables growth in crevices, and may include grey foliage or tomentose surfaces (rhs.org.uk).

Mat-forming growth rapidly covers the soil, helping to stabilize fine scree in nature and suppress weeds and erosion in gardens (rhs.org.uk).

A prostrate growth form offers several advantages: it minimizes exposure to cold winds and reduces transpiration (water loss) from the plant surface (ubc.ca). Other typical features include reduced leaf area, dense pubescence, a waxy surface, and either a deep or highly branched root system (Miroslav Tatíček). Rock garden plants often allocate a disproportionate amount of biomass to roots relative to their small above-ground parts (ubc.ca). Roots penetrate deeply into rock fissures or spread widely in shallow soils to efficiently search for water and nutrients (ruxley-manor.co.uk).

Leaf hairs filter and absorb harmful UV radiation before it reaches the leaf surface (asknature.org). Pubescence also reduces airflow directly at the leaf surface, helping to maintain a thin layer of humid air and slowing excessive water loss caused by dry winds (ubc.ca). Hairs partially reflect visible sunlight and trap radiant heat near the plant surface, providing insulation against nocturnal cold (asknature.org). A waxy coating or thick cuticle performs a similar function by reflecting part of the solar radiation and preventing desiccation. High-mountain species often display grey-green to silvery leaves due to layers of hairs or wax (ubc.ca).

Successful cultivation depends more on microclimate than on the “paper” conditions of a locality: effective drainage (especially protection against winter wetness), a gritty mineral substrate, stable stones, proper orientation (sun versus partial shade), and protection of sensitive species from the combined effects of frost and moisture (rhs.org.uk). Rock garden plants are associated with habitats characterized by limited soil and nutrients: rock crevices, screes, gravel deposits, stony pastures, wind-exposed ridges, and subalpine grasslands. In the Carpathians and the Alps, they are often linked to specific geology (limestone versus silicate), reflected in pH preferences and drainage requirements (rhs.org.uk).

In natural mountain ecosystems, rock plants can stabilize substrates (fine screes and crevices), trap organic matter, and slow surface runoff (rhs.org.uk). They also shape microclimates—cushion plants can create more favorable microenvironments for the germination and growth of other species (facilitation) (Lohengrin A. Cavieres et al.). Compact cushions and rosettes create their own internal microclimate: air within the clump is less extreme, and temperatures at the center of a basal rosette may be up to 10 °C higher than the surroundings during cold nights and lower during hot days (Peter Lupták).

Small, rigid, and often succulent leaves are another characteristic of many rock garden plants. A small leaf area reduces water loss, and a tough (leathery) structure with a thick cuticle lowers the risk of damage from strong UV radiation and wind (swisshikingvacations.com). Many alpine plants, especially those growing on dry rocks, are succulents—storing water and nutrients in leaves or stems (swisshikingvacations.com).

They also support pollinators, serving as key nectar and pollen sources during the short growing season in mountain zones (rhs.org.uk). For horticultural purposes, an important parallel applies: a rock garden is a scaled-down model of a stress habitat. If this environment is “softened” (heavy soil, excessive humus, standing water), plants lose their competitive advantage and often die from rot or become overgrown and collapse (rhs.org.uk). Most rock plants require very well-drained soil. In practice, this means a high proportion of mineral components and a stable structure that prevents waterlogging in winter and muddy saturation in summer (rhs.org.uk). The most common cause of cultivation failure is the combination of cold and excessive moisture (rhs.org.uk).

Many rock garden plants are strictly sun-loving, although some alpine rosette species also thrive in partial shade, particularly if shade protects them from intense summer heat and leaf desiccation (rhs.org.uk). Many benefit from a cold period before germination—“winter sowing” in outdoor containers or stratification (alpinegardensociety.net). Rock garden plants inhabit diverse alpine and subalpine habitats. In the Carpathians, the Alps, and other European mountain ranges, they form part of alpine vegetation above the tree line. Typical natural habitats include alpine meadows and grasslands, rock faces, scree slopes, and moraines (swisshikingvacations.com). Limestone and granite mountain ranges differ in soil chemistry—calcareous substrates host different species than acidic siliceous soils (swisshikingvacations.com).

Cultivation must respect natural habitat conditions. Essential factors include drainage, a permeable substrate, a drainage layer beneath plantings, and correct stone placement to channel water away. Substrates are primarily mineral, with minimal humus content. Using a single rock type is recommended to achieve a natural appearance. Stones should be arranged to mimic geological layering and avoid random placement. Plants should be inserted into crevices rather than placed on top of stones. A well-designed rock garden creates microclimatic zones: dry peaks, moister lower sections, shade beneath overhangs, and warm south-facing slopes. Over-fertilization should be avoided; rock garden plants require nutrient-poor soils. Regular inspection and removal of rotting parts is recommended (Miroslav Tatíček). Many rock plants are evergreen, allowing them to begin photosynthesis immediately when conditions permit (ubc.ca). Some high-mountain species even produce natural “antifreeze” compounds—accumulating sugars, polyols, or proteins that lower the freezing point of cell sap and protect tissues from frost damage. Weeds are highly competitive; once established, they can quickly suppress rock garden plants (ruxley-manor.co.uk).

Flóra Bratislava

Hits: 2564

je medzinárodný veľtrh kvetín a záhradníctva (zk.sk). Výstava kvetov a záhradníctva s medzinárodnou účasťou usporadúvaná v Bratislave. Nultý ročník sa konal v roku 1966 v priestoroch Zimného štadióna Ondreja Nepelu.

Trnavská ulica v stredovom páse v blízkosti Zimného štadióna krášlilo v roku 1972 sto tisíc tulipánov. Tulipány boli darom Emilovi Skákalovi, šéfovi ZARES-u (Soňa Pacherová). Neskôr bolo miestom výstavy Park kultúry a oddychu (PKO) (vecernikbratislava.wordpress.com).

Návštevníci majú možnosť obdivovať rôzne druhy kvetov, bonsajov, kaktusov, okrasných rastlín a ďalších produktov súvisiacich so záhradníctvom (Slovakia Travel). Tieto aktivity poskytujú návštevníkom príležitosť získať nové poznatky a zručnosti v oblasti záhradníctva a kvetinového dizajnu.

Flóra Bratislava is an international flower and gardening fair (zk.sk). It is a flower and gardening exhibition with international participation, held in Bratislava. The inaugural year of the exhibition took place in 1966 at the Ondrej Nepela Ice Stadium.

In 1972, the central strip of Trnavská Street near the ice stadium was adorned with one hundred thousand tulips. The tulips were a gift to Emil Skákala, the head of ZARES (Soňa Pacherová). Later, the exhibition moved to the Park of Culture and Leisure (PKO) (vecernikbratislava.wordpress.com). During its golden era, Flóra exhibitions lasted up to ten days. The daily attendance was approximately 60,000 visitors. However, immediately after 1989, the federal state sharply reduced financial subsidies for the famous flower exhibitions. In 1990, following the death of Emil Skákala, Flóra Bratislava was not held at all. Additionally, Olomouc refused to continue alternating as a host city with the Slovak capital, preferring to hold its own exhibition annually. Ultimately, Skákala’s student, Andrej Kulla, took on the task of preserving the Bratislava tradition. In 1991, Kulla organized Flóra for the last time with partial state support (Soňa Pacherová). Later, the organization of the exhibition was taken over by the company KULLA s.r.o., and since 2013, KULLA SK, s.r.o., which continues to organize it to this day. Since 2002, it has been held at the Incheba exhibition center. It is the largest flower and gardening exhibition in Slovakia, held annually at the Incheba exhibition center in Bratislava.

Flóra Bratislava has become one of the most significant events in the field of horticulture in Slovakia. Every year, dozens of exhibitors from various countries present a wide assortment of flowers, plants, gardening supplies, and decorations. Visitors have the opportunity to admire various types of flowers, bonsai, cacti, ornamental plants, and other gardening-related products (Slovakia Travel). In addition to the exhibition itself, the event includes various accompanying activities, such as workshops, lectures, and flower arrangement competitions. These activities provide visitors with the opportunity to gain new knowledge and skills in the field of horticulture and floral design.

1972-ben a Trnavská utca középső sávját a jégstadion közelében százezer tulipán díszítette. A tulipánokat Emil Skákala, a ZARES vezetője kapta ajándékba (Soňa Pacherová). Aranykorában a Flóra kiállítások akár tíz napig is tartottak. Végül Skákala tanítványa, Andrej Kulla vállalta a pozsonyi hagyomány megőrzésének feladatát.

Flóra Bratislava to międzynarodowe targi kwiatów i ogrodnictwa (zk.sk).

Później wystawa została przeniesiona do Parku Kultury i Wypoczynku (PKO) (vecernikbratislava.wordpress.com).

Te aktywności dają zwiedzającym możliwość zdobycia nowej wiedzy i umiejętności z zakresu ogrodnictwa i florystyki.

Hainburg an der Donau is a historic town in Lower Austria, located on the right bank of the Danube between Vienna and . It is the easternmost town in Austria (Wikipedia). Situated in the region known as Industrieviertel, it lies approximately 12 kilometers west of Bratislava and 43 kilometers east of Vienna. The surroundings of Hainburg are characterized by wooded hills and are part of the Donau-Auen National Park, which protects one of the last large river floodplains in Central Europe (donau.com). Hainburg boasts one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Austria, including city walls, towers, and three city gates. The most famous of these, Wienertor, is considered the largest medieval city gate in Europe (Wikipedia). Overlooking the town is a castle whose origins date back to the 11th century. The castle was built by order of Emperor Henry III and served as a strategic fortress for border defense (Wikipedia).

In addition to historical landmarks, Hainburg offers opportunities for hiking and cycling in the surrounding nature. A popular destination is Hill, which offers panoramic views of the town, the Danube, and the surrounding areas (icestovanie.sk).

The landscape near Hainburg, which I am particularly interested in, belongs to the unique European Donau-Auen National Park. It lies between the major cities of Bratislava and Vienna. Hainburg an der Donau is a small town located near Bratislava. Above the town are two hills: Braunsberg and Schlossberg. On Schlossberg stands Hainburg Castle.

The town, covering an area of 25 km², has a population of just under 6,000 (cestovanie.biz). Schlossberg Castle on the hill was built by Emperor Henry III in 1050 from older fortifications (cestovanie.biz). In 1108, the castle became the property of the Babenbergs (Wikipedia). In the second half of the 12th century, it was renovated under Richard the Lionheart, and in the 13th century by the Czech king Přemysl Otakar. In 1252, it became the property of the Habsburgs. Since 1629, the castle has been managed by the town but began to fall into disrepair (cestovanie.biz). In 1683, the town was plundered by the Turks, with 8,000 inhabitants killed (Wikipedia). During this time, Thomas Haydn, the father of composer Joseph Haydn, managed to escape. In 1789, Emperor Joseph II relocated a tobacco processing factory to the town, which became an important economic hub for decades (cestovanie.biz). The town also features one of the best-preserved medieval city gates in Europe—Wienertor (Vienna Gate) and Ungertor (Hungarian Gate) (cestovanie.biz, Wikipedia). Nearby are the ruins of Heimenburg Castle (Röthelstein), located less than 2 km from the town (cestovanie.biz), near the Danube, below Braunsberg. Medieval markets and castle festivities are held here every year in June and summer (Wikipedia).

Röthelstein is a castle ruin located on a 30-meter-high rocky outcrop above the Danube River, east of Hainburg an der Donau in Lower Austria. The castle was built in the 11th century, and the first written record dates to 1180. Its strategic location opposite Castle on the Slovak side of the Danube suggests it served as a border and watch castle, controlling trade ships and fishing on the river (hainburg.sk). In 1411, it was granted as a fiefdom to Wilhelm von Enzersdorf by Albert V, Duke of Austria (castles.nl). Over the centuries, the castle gradually lost importance and fell into ruin. Today, Röthelstein is a popular destination for tourists and history enthusiasts. The ruins offer an impressive view of the Danube River and the surrounding landscape. Access to the castle is possible on foot from Hainburg, with a path along the Danube passing through a tunnel carved into the rock (panorama.sk). The surroundings of the castle are part of the national park, enhancing its appeal for visitors (Oskar Mažgút). Interestingly, within a stretch of just over four kilometers, there are three castles: Hainburg Castle, Röthelstein, and Devín Castle. This area, known as the Devín Gate, was historically heavily fortified and served as a strategic point on the Danube River (panorama.sk).
