Fountain of St. George and the Dragon

According to legend, George was an officer in the Roman army. One day, he came to a town terrorized by a dragon. Initially, the dragon was satisfied with a daily supply of livestock, but later, it began demanding young girls. Desperate, the people selected victims by drawing lots. George arrived in the town when the lot fell on the king’s daughter. He killed the dragon with his spear and became a symbol of a knight triumphing over evil (bratislava.sk).

Először a sárkány a mindennapi marhahús-szállítmánnyal megelégedett, később azonban fiatal lányokat kezdett követelni. A kétségbeesett emberek a sorsolás útján választották az áldozatokat. György akkor érkezett a városba, amikor a király leánya esett ki a sorsolásból. Megölte a sárkányt lándzsájával, és a lovagot szimbólummá vált, aki legyőzi a gonoszt (bratislava.sk).

Rolandova fontána pred Starou radnicou – kamenná renesančná fontána s kruhovou nádržou ozdobenou maskarónmi a so stredovým pilierom na ktorom stojí postava stredovekého rytiera v brnení.

Old Town Hall

In the 14th century, there was a house with a tower on the site of today’s Old Town Hall, built by the mayor Jakub. The Old Town Hall was formed in the 15th century by merging several neighboring bourgeois houses on the Main Square, and over the centuries, it underwent several reconstructions. After the earthquake in 1599, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style, and the town hall tower was reconstructed in the Baroque style after a fire in the 18th century. In 1912, a rear wing was added in the Neo-Renaissance style from the courtyard side and in the Neo-Gothic style from Primaciálne Square. The town hall tower served a defensive purpose. When looking at the tower from the Main Square, you will find several interesting features – on the plinth, there is a plaque with the date February 1850, reminding of the water level during a flood when the Danube overflowed its banks. To the left of the Gothic window, at the level of the 1st floor, there is a walled cannonball reminding of the attacks by Napoleon’s armies in 1809. On the corner of the tower stands a statue of the Madonna from 1676. From the tower balcony, decisions of the parliament, royal decrees, and city council regulations were announced in the past. On the facade to the right of the Renaissance arcade, you can notice a fresco of an old man – a usurer from 1533. The City Museum is one of the oldest museums in Central Europe, founded in 1868. In the courtyard corner, there is an entrance to the exhibition of feudal justice and the history of the city. Concerts and theater performances take place on the Renaissance arcade courtyard in the summer (bratislava.sk).

Roland Fountain in front of the Old Town Hall – a stone Renaissance fountain with a circular basin adorned with mascarons and a central pillar on which stands the figure of a medieval knight in armor. The statue depicts the legendary guardian of municipal rights, Roland. In the lower part of the pillar, there is a smaller shell-shaped basin into which water sprays from the mouths of fish held by figurines – the so-called putti. Water was originally brought to the fountain through wooden pipes. The fountain was created for practical reasons at a time when there was a noticeable shortage of water in the city, as a direct response to a major fire that broke out during the coronation celebration of Maximilian and devastated a large part of the homes in the city. It is assumed that the author depicted the face of the then ruler on the statue of Roland (bratislava.sk).

Altes Rathaus

A városháza tornya védelmi célt szolgált.

A szobor Rolandot, a városi jogok őrzőjét ábrázolja. Az oszlop alsó részén egy kisebb kagylós medence található, amelybe víz spriccel a putti nevű halalakok szájából. A vizet eredetileg fa csöveken keresztül vezették a kúthoz.

Blue Church – Church of St. Elizabeth

The single-nave Secessionist Blue Church of St. Elizabeth with a cylindrical tower was built between 1910 and 1913 according to the design of Budapest architect Edmund Lechner. The church was constructed by the Pittel and Brausewetter company, which pioneered the use of reinforced concrete structures in the church’s architecture, supporting both the church vault and the organ loft. The church’s floor plan follows traditional styles, incorporating many elements borrowed from them. However, a completely new feature is the ornate plasterwork that imitates oriental ornamentation. The central element of the church’s front facade is a mosaic featuring the figure of St. Elizabeth holding roses in her cloak. Roses are also a fundamental element of the interior ornamentation. With this construction, Lechner created a new Hungarian national architectural style. The dedication of the Church of St. Elizabeth also reflected Hungarian national sentiment. St. Elizabeth was a native Hungarian saint from the royal Arpad dynasty (likely born in Bratislava Castle), and the church was intended to serve as a symbolic mausoleum for Empress Elizabeth (Sissi), the wife of Franz Joseph I (bratislava.sk).

A templom alaprajza a hagyományos stílusokat követi, sok elemet kölcsönöz tőlük. A rózsák a belső díszítés alapvető elemei is. A Szent Erzsébet-templom felszentelése is tükrözte a magyar nemzeti érzelmeket. Pôvodne na mieste SND stálo tzv. Stavovské divadlo postavené v rokoch 17741776. Budova slúžila obecenstvu s viacerými neskoršími úpravami až do roku 1884, teda viac než sto rokov. Slovak National Theatre – Historical Building

Originally, at the location of the Slovak National Theatre (SND), there stood the so-called Stavovské Theatre, built from 1774 to 1776. The building served the audience with several later modifications until 1884, more than a hundred years. After unfortunate fires in theater buildings in other cities, especially after the Vienna theater fire in 1881, the city of Prešporok (now Bratislava) decided to build a new theater building. It was constructed from 1885 to 1886. The operation in the new building opened on September 22, 1886, with a performance of the opera Bánk Bán by composer Ferenc Erkel, who himself conducted the first performance. Even after World War I, performances were held in the new building in both Hungarian and German. Gradually, actors from the Slovak National Theatre also took to its stage. Throughout the theater’s long history, it hosted the most significant personalities of the global opera scene, including F. Shalyapin, P. Mascagni, R. Strauss, G. Filip, M. Poppová, who performed on the most famous world stages (bratislava.sk).

The Ganymede Fountain in front of the Slovak National Theatre dates back to 1888. The eagle with the boy represents Zeus transformed into a bird of prey, carrying the beautiful boy Ganymede to Olympus, the abode of the gods. The perimeter of the stone basin of the fountain is adorned with turtles, frogs, and crayfish, supported by small figures of four children holding four types of Danube fish – carp, catfish, pikeperch, and pike. Water sprouts from the fish papules and falls into the basin (bratislava.sk).

Fokozatosan a Szlovák Nemzeti Színház társulatának színészei is megjelentek a színpadon. A színház hosszú története során a globális operaszínház legjelentősebb személyiségei léptek fel itt, köztük F. Salyapin, P. Mascagni, R. Strauss, G. Filip, M. Freni, P. Cappuccilli, R. Reznikov, J. Obrazcovová, és olyan táncosok, mint M. Fonteyn, A. Alonso, V. Vasiliev, és sokan mások. Jelenleg opera és balett működik itt. Sok jelentős operaszínházi személyiséget nevelt ki, például Peter Dvorský, J. Kundlák, J. Galla, E. Jenisová, E. Grúberová, L. Poppová, akik a világ legismertebb színpadain léptek fel (bratislava.sk).

A Ganymede-kút a Szlovák Nemzeti Színház előtt 1888-ból származik.

V minulosti boli v Jelke mlyny štyri. Je sprístupnený verejnosti, pôvodne patril Jozefovi Némethovi, neskôr jeho synovi Vincentovi a do roku 1973 vnukovi Ernestovi. V mlyne mleli prevažne raž. Mlyn fungoval do apríla 1951 (jelka.sk).

The water mill is located on the bank of the Small Danube, near which there is a museum focusing on the agricultural history of the village of Jelka. The original character of the mill was maritime, converted to a wheel mill in 1905 (muzeum.sk). It is a remarkable technical monument of southwestern Slovakia. It has been reconstructed since May 18, 2019. In the past, there were four mills in Jelka. It is open to the public, originally owned by Jozef Németh, later his son Vincent, and until 1973 his grandson Ernest. The mill mainly ground rye. The mill operated until April 1951 (jelka.sk). Its mill wheel is functional, but it is powered by an electric motor (cestujzamenej.sk).

In the mill complex, there are demonstrations of various agricultural machines and equipment. For example, a sugar beet mower, plows, flax press, sledges, scales, a farmer’s cart, a carter (cestujzamenej.sk).

The water mill served for flour production. Its architectural solution combines functionality with aesthetics. Traditional elements of the mill wheel, wooden construction, and stone walls create harmony that contrasts with the surrounding landscape. Every detail, every part, tells a story of ancient times through which it has passed. Local residents protect and maintain this unique mill as a memory for future generations. Today, the water mill is a tourist attraction even for many residents of Bratislava. Occasionally, cultural events, festivals, and concerts are held here.

Záhorie, kraj hraničný, ležiaci za horami

Hits: 4171

Záhorie si pamätá pochodovanie rímskych légií, zjednotenie slovanských kmeňov do Veľkomoravskej ríše. Viedli tu cesty nemeckých rytierov i českých kniežat.

Chvojnícka pahorkatina má tri časti: Skalický hájik, Unínsku a Senickú pahorkatinu.

V 5. a 6. storočí sem prichádzali Slovania, ktorých atakovali avarské kočovné kmene. Tatársky vpád v rokoch 12411242 spôsobil zánik dreveno-hlinitých hradov a stavali si kamenné hrady. Od roku 1221 mala Viedeň právo skladu. To znamenalo, že tu tovar museli vyložiť a ponúknuť domácim kupcom. Zároveň boli nútení kupovať od viedenských kupcov drahý tovar privezený zo západu. Viedeň sa snažili kupci obísť. Kupci prebrodili Dunaj až v Ostrihome a pokračovali po Českej ceste do Trnavy, cez Malé Karpaty do Jablonice, Senice, Holíča a odtiaľ do Brna, Prahy a veľkomiest západnej Európy.

Myjava, Vrbovce a Sobotište pytlikárstvom.

Iné kultúrne podujatia: Malacká hudobná jar, Malacké kultúrne leto, divadelné podujatie Zejdeme se na hambálku a Jablkové hodovanie v Malackách, Stupave a Jabloňovom, Habánsky hodový jarmok vo Veľkých Levároch, Detský medzinárodný folklórny festival Mravenec v Plaveckom Štvrtku, Záhradná galéria Alojza Machaja v Plaveckom Štvrtku, Pivný festival a Dni zelá v Stupave, Dedinka remesiel a umení Abeland pri Lozorne, Dni hrozna a vína v Lozorne, Sviatok Pomoravia v Jabloňovom, Súťaž vo varení guláša v Rohožníku, folklórne podujatie Festival Podhoran, Krumpolový deň, gastronomické podujatie Varíme vianočnú kapustnicu v Sološnici, Dožinková slávnosť v Plaveckom Petri, Trdlofest, hudobné podujatie Musica sacra, vinohradnícky Deň otvorených búd v Skalici, Tereziánske dni, Zámocké pivné slávnosti v Holíči, Hradné slávnosti v Podbranči, Letecký deň a Martinské svetlonosenie v Senici, Preteky dračích lodí na Kunovskej priehrade (Michaela Janotová, Eduard Timko).

Záhorie is a region situated between the Czech Republic to the north, Austria to the west, the Small Carpathians to the southeast, and the Danube River to the south. Záhorie has a rich history, witnessing the march of Roman legions, the unification of Slavic tribes into the Great Moravian Empire, and the presence of German knights and Czech princes. For centuries, it has been a borderland. With an area of approximately 2500 km², Záhorie is home to nearly 300,000 residents (zahorie.sk). The name Záhorie has its roots in the 17th century, derived from the Latin term Processus transmontanus,” which referred to the region behind the Small Carpathians, beyond the mountains. Other historical names include Moravské pole na Slovensku, Slovak Pomoravie, Moravská nížina, and Moravský dol. Administratively, Záhorie has never formed a unified entity (zahorie.sk). It includes the districts of Skalica, Senica, Malacky, partially Myjava, and Bratislava – Záhorská Bystrica. The majority of the territory is characterized by the Záhorie Lowland (zahorie.sk).

Human economic activities led to the movement of sand, prompting afforestation of the loose sands in the Záhorie Lowland during the 16th and 17th centuries. However, the natural character of the forests on windy sands was altered by the extensive planting of pine trees (zahorie.sk). Today, Záhorie is known for its pine and riparian forests and sandy soil. Winds are frequent in this region (lozorno.sk). Originally, the Záhorie Lowland was a heavily marshy area with swamps, lakes, and dead river branches. Soft riparian forests still exist on the floodplains of the Morava and Myjava rivers. On higher elevations, there are hard riparian forests. The wetland forests on permanently waterlogged peat soils, such as in the nature reserve Bezdné near Plavecký Štvrtok, are unique. From a botanical perspective, Devínska Kobyla is also remarkable (zahorie.sk).

The Záhorie Lowland is divided into two parts: the Borská Lowland and the Chvojnická Hills. The central part of the Borská Lowland consists of windswept sands northeast of Lozorno and Malacky. To the north, sand dunes rise in Lakšárska Hills. Along the Morava and Myjava rivers, there are the river basins of Myjavská and Dolnomoravská niva, gravel-sand deposits disturbed by river meandering. Between Cerová and Zohor, there is the Podmalokarpatská Depression, where extensive marshy areas formed. The Chvojnická Hills have three parts: Skalický hájik, Unínska, and Senická pahorkatina. Thick layers of loess and loess-like soils are found here. Záhorie also features karst areas in the Small Carpathians – Borinský and Plavecký kras. The Myjavská Hills extend between the Small and White Carpathians (zahorie.sk). The Záhorie Lowland does not have a dense river network, and human activities have significantly altered the original network. The region is relatively dry, with major rivers being the Morava, Myjava, and Rudava. However, significant groundwater reserves are found, especially in the sandy and loamy sands. Numerous water reservoirs, gravel pits, and ponds are also present (zahorie.sk). Most lakes in Záhorie were formed by gravel and sand mining. Caves such as Deravá skala and Pohanská are part of the Malé Karpaty karst (lozorno.sk). Birds of prey, including the peregrine falcon, nest on the rocks and ruins of castles in the Small and White Carpathians (zahorie.sk). Additionally, oil and natural gas deposits have been discovered near Gbely, and industrial mining has been ongoing since 1914 (lozorno.sk).

Záhorie is one of the earliest settled areas in Slovakia. Among the oldest inhabited sites are the Deravá skala cave near Plavecký Mikuláš and a Paleolithic settlement near Sološnica. In the 6th to 5th centuries BCE, the Scythians arrived, followed by the Celts. Settlements from the later Iron Age have been found in places like Myjava, Devín, and Šaštín. The Celts built well-fortified settlements, excelled in metallurgy, and produced tools, weapons, and jewelry (zahorie.sk). The extensive oppidum on Pohanská hill was constructed during this period (lozorno.sk). The Germanic Markomani and Quadi displaced the Celts and Dacians around the turn of the eras. Their scattered tribes also reached Záhorie. The last Germanic tribe in Záhorie were the Lombards in the first half of the 6th century. In the 5th and 6th centuries, Slavs arrived, facing attacks from Avar nomadic tribes. From the time of the Great Moravian Empire, settlements and forts are known in Podbranč, Plavecký Štvrtok, Senica, Rohožník, Stupava, Zohor, Vyšná pri Morave, and Devín (zahorie.sk). After the establishment of Hungary, Záhorie became a border area with the Kingdom of Bohemia and Austria. To protect the borders, tribes like the Sikuls and Plavcs were summoned, and local names like Plavecký hrad, Plavecké Podhradie, Sekule, and others bear witness to their presence (lozorno.sk). The Tatar invasion in 1241 and 1242 led to the destruction of wooden and earthen castles, prompting the construction of stone castles. From 1221, Vienna had the right to store goods, meaning that merchants had to unload and offer their goods to local merchants. Simultaneously, they were forced to buy expensive goods brought from the west by Viennese merchants. Merchants sought to bypass Vienna, crossing the Danube at Esztergom and continuing along the Czech Road to Trnava, over the Small Carpathians to Jablonica, Senica, Holíč, and from there to Brno, Prague, and major cities in Western Europe. This decision elevated the Czech Road to a fundamental European route, around which feudal castle estates began to form in the second half of the 13th and 14th centuries (zahorie.sk).

After the Battle of Mohács in 1526 and the Turkish campaign in 1663, the Slovak population in Záhorie decreased. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Skalica gained renown for its fine wool. Brezová pod Bradlom became a center for leather and linen production. Myjava, Vrbovce, and Sobotište were known for their bag making. In Šaštín, a cardboard factory was established in 1736, which, until its demise in 1847, was the largest and most famous manufactory in Slovakia. It was one of the largest in Europe, employing almost 20,000 people, with its spinning centers in Lower Austria, especially in Vienna. A majolica manufactory was founded in Holíč. Moreover, it became a center for sheep breeding improvement. In the 1770s, Skalica, with 5,000 inhabitants, was among the ten largest cities in Slovakia. In 1848 – 49, Myjava was one of the centers of the national movement. The first national assembly was held here, declaring the Slovak National Council as a representative body (zahorie.sk).

Habaner Festival in Veľké Leváre, International Children’s Folklore Festival Mravenec in Plavecký Štvrtok, Garden Gallery Alojz Machaj in Plavecký Štvrtok, Beer Festival und Cabbage Cooking Days in Stupava, Village of Crafts and Arts Abeland bei Lozorno, Days of Grapes and Wine in Lozorno, Pomoravia Festival in Jabloňovo, Goulash Cooking Competition in Rohožník, folk event Festival Podhoran, Krumpolový deň, gastronomic event Cooking Christmas Sauerkraut in Sološnica, Harvest Festival in Plavecký Petřich, Trdlofest, musical event Musica Sacra, vine-growing Open Barn Day in Skalica, Tereziánske dni, Castle Beer Festivities in Holíč, Castle Celebrations in Podbranč, Aviation Day and Martin’s Lantern Parade in Senica, Dragon Boat Races on Kunovská Reservoir (Michaela Janotová, Eduard Timko).

Leto – obdobie tepla, slnka a dozrievania

Hits: 3234

Leto je krásne obdobie roka, ktoré nám prináša slnečné lúče a teplo, čo zvyčajne evokuje pocit slobody. Príroda vtedy oplýva bohatstvom farieb, vôní a chutí.

Summer is a beautiful time of the year that brings us sunshine and warmth, typically evoking a sense of freedom. Nature flourishes with a wealth of colors, scents, and flavors during this season. The warm weather beckons us outdoors. Fruits ripen on trees, fields take on a golden hue, and flowers bloom in a myriad of colors. Gardens come alive, not only with plants but also with diverse insects and the melodies of birds. Summer is a time when nature looks, feels, and sounds different.

Summer offers us the opportunity to taste fresh berries, sweet melons, juicy peaches, and many other delights that nature provides. Fruits and vegetables ripen in the sun, acquiring full flavor and aroma, offering a sensory experience. It’s also a season of active vacations and adventures. People seek opportunities for travel, camping, excursions, and exploring new places. Natural landscapes, historical landmarks, and cultural events become the backdrop for adventure and discovery. However, the summer season brings challenges, especially in terms of sun protection and hydration. It’s important to shield your skin from excessive sunlight, drink enough water, and take care of your health in the heat.

Vodný mlyn v Kolárove s dreveným mostom

Hits: 1667

Areál leží na polostrove, ktorého hranice tvoria toky Malého Dunaja a Váhu z jednej strany a mŕtveho ramena Malého Dunaja zo strany druhej (muzeum.sk).

K areálu vedie drevený most pre peších s celodrevenou zastrešenou konštrukciou. Nový most bol dvakrát prestavaný v rokoch 19972000 (novezamky.sk). Most je zo špeciálne napusteného agátového dreva a mal by vydržať približne 150 rokov (Milan Šalko).

The water mill in Kolárovo is a reconstructed floating mill – a boat mill anchored on the bank of the dead arm of the Little Danube (Martin Kiňo, Václav Sulek). These mills have Byzantine origins, mainly utilized in the Balkans (travelguide.sk). Floating mills were always anchored in places with the strongest currents, which they used to drive the mill wheels, making them independent of changes in the river’s water level (krasneslovensko.eu). The mill is a replica of a mill from Radvan nad Dunajom (Jiří Výborný). The original mill was built in 1920, and the current mill is based on period photographs, especially a faithful model created by a former mill employee, Lajos Suhaj (travelguide.sk). The mill itself houses the Museum of Water Milling (Martin Kiňo, Václav Sulek). Among other exhibits, visitors can see a unique machine for making fishing nets, one of the first in the world (slovakianguide.com). The boat mill is also listed among the national cultural monuments. The original mill was relocated to the Museum of Slovak Village in Martin in the 1960s (Martin Kiňo, Václav Sulek). The current mill has undergone slight modifications but remains fully functional. The area is located on a peninsula, bordered by the waters of the Little Danube and Váh rivers on one side and the dead arm of the Little Danube on the other (muzeum.sk).

Since the mid-90s, a complex for cyclists has been developing in the vicinity of the mill. Besides a residential building with a pub, there is also a small museum of old agricultural machinery and a family eco-farm with domestic animals (Jiří Výborný) – Vodný mlyn Farm – 133046. The complex includes a camping area with bungalows – Kemping Mlyn. A covered stage provides space for cultural events, and there are two playgrounds for children (novezamky.sk).

A wooden footbridge with a fully wooden roof structure leads to the area. With a length of 86 meters, it is considered one of the longest in Europe (muzeum.sk). It was built in 1992 according to the testimonies of witnesses to the original bridge, which was destroyed by ice floes in the mid-20th century. The pillars of the original bridge are visible in the summer when the water level is low. The new bridge was rebuilt twice in 1997 and 2000 (novezamky.sk). The bridge is made of specially impregnated agate wood and is expected to last approximately 150 years (Milan Šalko).

A Kolárovoi vízimalom egy felújított úszó malom – hajó malom, amely a Kis-Duna holtágának partján horgonyzik (Martin Kiňo, Václav Sulek). Ezeknek a malomnak a byzantin eredete van, főként a Balkánon használták (travelguide.sk). Az úszó malom mindig azokon a helyeken volt lekötve, ahol a legerősebb áramlatok voltak, amelyeket a malomkerekek meghajtására használtak, így függetlenek voltak a folyó vízszintjének változásaitól (krasneslovensko.eu). A malom egy replika a Radván nad Dunajom található malomról (Jiří Výborný). Az eredeti malomot 1920-ban építették. A jelenlegi malom alapját a korabeli fényképek és a malom egykori alkalmazottjának, Lajos Suhajnak a hű másolata képezi (travelguide.sk). A malomban közvetlenül kialakították a Vízimalmáriumot is (Martin Kiňo, Václav Sulek).
