Chránili ju dve železné krídlové bránky a vyťahovací most, pod ktorým sa nachádzala hlboká priekopa.

Z prízemného nádvoria viedli kamenné schody do hradnej záhrady.

Dala ho dostavať a vnútro zariadiť.

Smolenice is situated at the foot of the Small Carpathians. The Smolenice Castle is well-known and is used throughout the year. A beautiful park is located next to the castle. The castle houses the Congress Center of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The castle dates back to the 14th century. In 1390, King Sigismund donated it to Stibor of Stiboric. Since 1777, it belonged to the Pálffys (Information Panel). In the early 18th century, during the uprising led by Francis II Rákóczi against the emperor to achieve Hungary’s independence, Smolenice Castle became the scene of battles between kurucs and imperial troops. The last description of the uninhabited castle dates back to the 18th century. No further modifications were made later. The castle was surrounded by a wall with four towers equipped with cannons. The entrance gate faced north, protected by two iron gates and a drawbridge over a deep moat. In the courtyard, there was a well carved 27 fathoms deep into the rock (Štefan Jastrabík).

In the years 1948 – 1950, it was cleared and deepened to 60 meters. Stone stairs led from the ground courtyard to the castle garden. Two large wine cellars were located under the eastern side of the castle. The chapel housed an altar with paintings of Mary Magdalene, the Virgin Mary, and St. Thomas. On the third floor, there were the counts’ quarters. The countess’s furniture was decorated with yellow paint, while the count’s furniture was black with gold trim. After the Napoleonic Wars, the castle burned down and eventually turned into ruins (Štefan Jastrabík). In 1855, Count Móric Pálffy established a stud farm beneath Smolenice Castle. Initially, it was for breeding working horses for personal use. In the 1880s, Ján Pálffy expanded it, focusing on the breeding of carriage draft horses and heavier riding horses, later also racehorses. The stud farm disappeared after the collapse of Austria-Hungary (Wikipedia).

The current castle was built at the beginning of the 20th century on the ruins of the old castle, although the first work began in 1887 with the renovation of the bastions and the construction of a chapel in the southern bastion. The construction of the main building began in 1911 by Count Jozef Pálffy (18531920), the owner of the Smolenice and Dobrovoľa estates. The real construction of the main building started in 1911. Count Pálffy chose a design that resembled the Kreuzenstein Castle near Vienna, owned by his mother, Countess Vilczek. The First World War in the summer of 1914 caused a halt in construction. External works were roughly finished, but the internal construction was only in its beginnings. In 1921, the entire ceramic collection was moved to Červený Kameň. After 1945, the state became the owner of the castle. The Slovak National Council took over the castle and chose it as its summer residence. It had it completed and furnished. On July 22, 1952, a fire broke out at the castle, leaving part of the bastion without a roof. In early 1955, the second phase of castle completion began, ending in 1957. The unusual shape of the tower reflects the peculiarities that aristocratic feudal lords appreciated. It has three floors, with a gallery between the second and third floors. At the very top is an observation tower. The castle is surrounded by an English park (Štefan Jastrabík).”
