Barokový Schlosshof

Hits: 2047

Schlosshof slúžilo ako prázdninové sídlo Habsburgovcov. Nachádza sa neďaleko od Devínskej Novej Vsi. Odporúčam prechádzku cez Cyklomost Slobody, bude to príjemná polhodinka.

Schlosshof served as a holiday residence for the Habsburgs. It is located near Devínska Nová Ves. I recommend taking a walk through the Cyklomost Slobody (Cyclist Bridge of Freedom), it will be a pleasant half-hour stroll.

Schlosshof is a settlement of the town of Engelhartstetten. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the Hof Castle is mentioned as the fortress Hof, belonging to the Eckarstau Castle (Wikipedia). The complex is the largest in Central Europe – spanning over 50 hectares. There are rich gardens, everywhere is full of greenery. In addition, there is a mini zoo, space for a farm, horses, and farm animals. Hof Castle is the largest Baroque building in Austria. Its modern history dates back to 1726 when it fulfilled the wish of Eugene of Savoy. The architect was Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt. Maria Theresa received this castle as a gift in 1755. At the end of the 19th century, Emperor Franz Joseph handed the property over to the imperial army. During World War II, the building served the German army and since 1945, the Soviet army. Reconstruction began only after 2002. Since 2005, the castle has been open to the public (schlosshof.cestovanie.biz).

Najmä Poecilia sphenops, Xiphophorus helleri, Gyrinocheilus aymonieri, Crossocheilus siamensis, Otocinclus, Epalzeorhynchus, Labeo, Helostoma temmincki, Ancistrus atď. Z kreviet najmä Caridina japonica, Neocaritida denticulata.

Savo zriedime v pomere 1:20. Jemnolisté rastliny znesú 2 – 3 minúty, väčšina rastlín 3 minúty, rastliny s tuhšími listami ako Anubias, Echinodorus, Crypotocoryne 3 – 4 minúty. Stačí ich ponoriť do pripraveného roztoku a následne poriadne prepláchnuť vo vode. Samozrejme aplikujte tento postup mimo akvária, napr. v kýbli. Takto môžeme zbaviť rias aj štrk, kamene apod., ostane doslova vybielený.

Algae

I would like to emphasize that algae are plants. They do not belong to higher plants – Magnoliophyta like most available aquatic plants, but rather to lower plants Algae – algae. Algae are part of the aquarium, trying to prevent them from being in the aquarium at all is an uneven battle and ultimately unnecessary. An aquarium without algae looks unnaturally sterile.

Algae are closely related to the amount of light. It is not easy at all to ensure optimal lighting conditions for our specific case. I consider it most important to achieve optimal growth of higher plants. In this case, higher plants can cope with a competitively weaker opponent. However, algae can react to changes much faster than higher plants. If you have a planted aquarium, I recommend covering the open bottom with plants by more than 75%. In that case, aquatic plants can effectively process even larger amounts of light and nutrients. They can to some extent compensate for higher energy inputs as well.

Algae are most commonly eliminated mechanically. I recommend a rough sponge for dishes or a soft wire. I do not recommend a razor blade, magnetic scraper, but even with a sponge or wire, be careful not to accidentally scratch the glass with gravel pieces during cleaning, especially on the front glass, it is unpleasant.

Biological means against algae include, for example, snails. But some fish also consume algae. Especially Poecilia sphenops, Xiphophorus helleri, Gyrinocheilus aymonieri, Crossocheilus siamensis, Otocinclus, Epalzeorhynchus, Labeo, Helostoma temmincki, Ancistrus, etc. Of shrimp, especially Caridina japonica, Neocaritida denticulata. It is important to note that for some of these organisms, algae are a natural food, but often, if they have enough other food, they prefer it. Black algae are reliably eaten only by the Chinese algae eater – Gyrinocheilus aymonieri and shrimp Caridina japonica. In nature, microscopic algae are consumed by small crustaceans – cyclops, rotifers, daphnia. Relying on biological means in case of higher algae occurrence is naive. In that case, it’s better to roll up your sleeves and get to work.

Algae can be effectively removed by the action of ultraviolet radiation. UV lamps can be purchased in pet stores, or you can make them yourself. It works on the principle of UV radiation acting on water passing through a tube, in which water is propelled by a filter, theoretically by some pump. The water passing through is exposed to radiation, which kills algae spores, of course, as well as pathogenic spores. The lamp acts on the water passing into the aquarium, thus protecting the water from algae. In the case of turbidity, direct exposure of the lamp’s light to the water can be used – but in that case, it is necessary to protect the eyes and not have fish or plants in the tank.

Algae can also be removed chemically, using products available in pet stores or at pet fairs. Some are based on copper, which is not suitable for some species, e.g., catfish. I recommend using products from EasyLife or Seachem. For example, AlgExit. Partially, effective fertilizer Carbo can be used, which if applied a few times directly to the problematic bunch of algae, can eventually kill even resistant algae.

Water flow also affects algae. The well-known black bristle algae, which belongs to red algae, thrives in strong flow, often found mainly on the filter, at its outlet. With an excess of light and nutrients, green and red algae are created. Brown algae occur in aquariums exceptionally in case of insufficient light. For example, in breeding tanks, or in case the aquarist does not shine enough, especially for a long time.

As a proven tool against bristle algae, the use of bleach can also be mentioned. Bleach naturally destroys all algae. Dilute the bleach at a ratio of 1:20. Fine-leaved plants tolerate 2 – 3 minutes, most plants 3 minutes, plants with tougher leaves like Anubias, Echinodorus, Cryptocoryne 3 – 4 minutes. Just immerse them in the prepared solution and then rinse thoroughly in water. Of course, apply this procedure outside the aquarium, e.g., in a bucket. This way, we can also get rid of algae, gravel, stones, etc., which will literally be bleached.

Algen

Besonders Poecilia sphenops, Xiphophorus helleri, Gyrinocheilus aymonieri, Crossocheilus siamensis, Otocinclus, Epalzeorhynchus, Labeo, Helostoma temmincki, Ancistrus usw.

Najznámejšie sú zelené riasyChlorophyta a červené riasy Rhodophyta. Sú však napr.aj hnedé riasyPhaephyceae, rozsievkyBacillariophyceae. Medzi známe druhy patrí Chlorella – jednobunková riasa schopná do zelena totálne ” zafarbiť” celú nádrž. V akvaristike sa preto používa termín zelený zákal, všeobecne sa používa termín vodný kvet. Medzi červené riasy patrí napr. Audouinella. Riasy sú rovnako ako vyššie rastliny asimilátory hmoty, obdobným spôsobom viažu svetlo, a tvoria organickú hmotu a ako vedľajší produkt kyslík.

Tzv. vodný kvet najmä v eutrofizovaných jazerách a nádržiach tvoria často mikroskopické druhy Chlorella pyrenoidosa, Volvox aureus. Draparnaldia, Tetraspora gelatinosa, Hydrodictyon reticulatum, Euglena. Dajú sa pomerne ťažko zo skla.

Green Algae

The most well-known are green algae – Chlorophyta and red algae – Rhodophyta. However, there are also brown algae – Phaeophyceae, diatoms – Bacillariophyceae, for example. Among the well-known species is Chlorella – a single-celled algae capable of completely coloring” the entire tank green. In aquarium keeping, the term green water” is used, while the general term water bloom” is also commonly used. Among the red algae is, for example, Audouinella. Algae, like higher plants, are assimilators of matter, bind light in a similar way, and produce organic matter and oxygen as a by-product.

The so-called water bloom, especially in eutrophic lakes and reservoirs, is often formed by microscopic species such as Chlorella pyrenoidosa, Volvox aureus. In the case of green water, common methods such as water changes, sedimentation, but especially total tank blackout for some time, can help. After this unaesthetic procedure, it is advisable to again replace a large amount of water. Another common type is the long filamentous green algae such as Pithophora, Oedogonium, Cladophora, which are relatively difficult to remove. Perhaps the most effective method is mechanical winding on a spindle or similar tool. However, they are eaten by livebearers, Ancistrus, Crossocheilus siamensis, Gyrinocheilus aymonieri, etc. Unlike brush algae, it is not so firmly anchored in the plants, so damage to the plants rarely occurs when removed. Savo bath can also be applied to hair algae. Algae forming small colonies, similar to brown algae on leaves, include Draparnaldia, Tetraspora gelatinosa, Hydrodictyon reticulatum, Euglena. They can be quite difficult to remove from glass.

Red Algae

Among the red algae – Rhodophyta, the previously mentioned brush algae can be an unwelcome guest. It is often also referred to as black algae. It is characterized by chromatic adaptation – it changes its photosynthetic pigments (color) depending on the current light conditions. It usually infiltrates through imported plants, water from another tank, snails, or even fish. The transfer of algae with water from another tank can occur very innocently – the algae is accidentally transferred. Spores of algae are sufficient for a successful” introduction. The main source of nutrition for algae is primarily older leaves of higher plants.

Taxonomically, it is several species such as Audouinella, Compsopogon, Batrachospermum moniliforme, Lemanea. Aquarists’ experiences with it vary. Generally, red algae and also black algae” thrive in nutrient excess. For example, they often occur very frequently in the summer and gradually begin to disappear from the aquarium from September. Their growth is influenced by daylight. They thrive in too much light. This algae is usually black, but its color can also be dark blue or dark green. It adheres practically everywhere, to plants, to the substrate, to the shells of snails, to the aquarium glass, it disrupts the film on the walls, etc. It holds very firmly, and it is mechanically very problematic to remove it from the surface of the plants. Usually, when trying to remove it, we also tear off a part of the plant. From personal experience, I know that it is difficult to remove it even with a wire brush from hard stone.

Black algae can also be fought in a more natural way. First and foremost, the nutrient intake should be reduced. There are several options for this – for example, removing sediment more frequently, changing the water more often, possibly increasing the amount during a change, feeding less, providing less light, moving the aquarium to a darker place.

Rote Algen

Niektoré druhy: Stephanodiscus bellus, Gomphonema geminatum, Hydrurus foetidus, Tabellaria ventricosa, Cymbella cistula.

Brown Algae

Brown algae – require different conditions than green and red algae. Among this type of algae, aquarists also include diatoms – Bacillariophyceae (Diatomae). Brown algae often appear shortly after the tank is set up. Their presence usually diminishes quickly and gradually disappears. However, if the presence is persistent, it is likely that our aquarium has not been provided with enough light. Brown algae mainly attach to the walls of the tank, but they can also be found on the surface of plants. Therefore, the solution to this situation is very simple: increasing the amount of light. Some species include: Stephanodiscus bellus, Gomphonema geminatum, Hydrurus foetidus, Tabellaria ventricosa, Cymbella cistula.

Braune Algen

Riasy a vyššie rastliny patria medzi eukaryotické organizmy.

Algae

Algae do not belong to plants (seaweed), but they are often classified among them. They are often referred to as blue-green algae. They are usually truly blue-green, which is caused by the pigment phycocyanin, but they can also be brown-black. Algae and higher plants belong to eukaryotic organisms. Algae are prokaryotic organisms unlike seaweed, plants, and animals. They are related to bacteria. Their metabolic products are harmful to fish, and at high concentrations, also to humans – let’s remember, for example, the ban on swimming in Kuchajda in Bratislava, but also in other bodies of water. They are often slimy in consistency and occur at high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus. Algae are very resilient opponents, the same procedures apply to eliminate them as in the case of seaweed. Some species: Aphanizomenon gracile, Rivularia haematites, Anabaena flos-aquae, Mycrocystis auruginosa, Oscillatoria limosa. It is not easy to get rid of them; I recommend using products from EasyLife, Seachem, etc. Interestingly, Malawi cichlids are one of the few groups of fish that consume algae.

Algen

Český klub Guppy zastupoval Jiří Hřivňák a Jaroslav Baleja.

Občas to viedlo k polemike, či samec vôbec patrí ku samičke. V poobedňajších hodinách sme po skupinách posudzovali dve kolekcie Xiphophorus helleri, dva páry Poecilia reticulata a jednu kolekciu Guppy triá. Posudzovanie bolo skúšobné a v konečnom dôsledku malo viesť k porovnaniu individuálnych posúdení jednotlivých posudzovateľov. Martin jednotlivé bodovacie lístky zapísal do počítača. Odovzdal som šesť bodovacích lístkov a uletel som do krajných hodnotení iba raz.

Year 2008 – Authors of the text: Peter Kaclík, Marián Stieranka

During the second weekend of March (8th9th March 2008), the Slovak Association of Fish Breeders organized a training for aquarium fish judges. The organizational training was prepared by the Livebearer Breeders Club. The training also had international representation, with judges from Slovakia, Poland, and the Czech Republic participating. The program was primarily managed by Marián Stieranka and Milan Vetrák – local enthusiasts from Banská Bystrica. The total number of participants was 21, including two new enthusiasts from Bratislava – Miloslav Pešek and Pavol Sedlák. The Czech Guppy Club was represented by Jiří Hřivňák and Jaroslav Baleja. From the Polish organizations, Boguslaw Micinski represented KPR, and Janusz Oziomek, Jozef Kania, Artur Zawadowski, and Alfred Górny represented PTAT.

At the beginning, we familiarized ourselves with some of the novelties in IKGH (International Congress of Guppy Holders). We appreciated individual breeders who excelled in the previous year’s competitions. I can brag that the most successful breeder traveled to the training in the same car as me ;-). For those in the know, there’s no need to hesitate; in 2007, it was indeed Ivan Vyslúžil. Fortunately, he doesn’t breed Xiphophorus variatus; otherwise, he might have taken home prizes for variatus ;-).

The first lecture, or rather exercise, focused on scoring in the Guppy category. The trend led by Marián during the training was to pay more attention to scoring the size parameters of collections (body length, dorsal and tail fins), which are not measured but estimated. He pointed out that the breeder’s eye is very specific. We had an overview of individual evaluations from two exhibitions organized in previous years. In the second presentation, we discussed possible problems in judging Guppy pairs from the perspective of color uniformity in the collection. On each slide, we first saw a female, and we tried to guess the coloration of the male. Sometimes this led to debates about whether the male really belonged to the female. In the afternoon, we judged two collections of Xiphophorus helleri, two pairs of Poecilia reticulata, and one collection of Guppy trios in groups. The judging was a trial and, in the end, was supposed to lead to a comparison of individual assessments by different judges. It was sometimes very busy, with long and sometimes noisy discussions, which I captured with my camera. On Sunday, thanks to Martin Fodor, we could compare individual assessments. Martin recorded the individual score sheets on the computer. Such a comprehensive comparison is only possible at a meeting of judges. I note that the act of judging itself is very interesting for me. We judged anonymously, but I can say that I am quite satisfied with myself :-). I submitted six score sheets and deviated from extreme ratings only once. I awarded 96 out of 100 possible points to one pair of swordtails. The concluding discussion on the assessment of Betta fish and the possibility of creating a uniform standard for their evaluation in Europe was certainly beneficial. Especially the Polish side showed great interest in gathering a larger number of participants in one place to discuss this issue. The organizers took good care of us, providing food, drinks, and accommodation. We enriched each other, and the atmosphere during the training was excellent. As two judges among us own local aquarium stores, we visited them several times. On Saturday evening, we went out together for some entertainment. On Sunday, after lunch, the training ended, and we headed home. The fish didn’t get bored; on the way back, we stopped at two breeders.

Program głównie nadzorowali Marián Stieranka i Milan Vetrák – lokalni entuzjaści z Banská Bystrica. Całkowita liczba uczestników wyniosła 21, w tym dwóch nowych entuzjastów z Bratysławy – Miloslav Pešek i Pavol Sedlák. Czeski Klub Guppy reprezentowali Jiří Hřivňák i Jaroslav Baleja. Z polskich organizacji, Bogusław Micinski reprezentował KPR, a Janusz Oziomek, Jozef Kania, Artur Zawadowski i Alfred Górny reprezentowali PTAT.

Martin wprowadził indywidualne arkusze punktowe do komputera.

V praxi sa posudzuje u nás kategória Guppy a Xipho-Molly, čiže druhy Poecilia reticulata, Xiphophorus helleri, X. maculatus, X. variatus, Poecilia sphenops, P. velifera a P. latipinna. Okrem mňa ešte Braňo Barčin a Martin Fodor. Tento rok sme sa venovali predovšetkým gupkám. Hlavná duša Marián Stieranka si pripravil viacero, povedal by som, seminárnych vstupov a niektoré z nich sme si odcvičili”. Hovorili sme o tvare plutiev, o farbe tela, plutiev, o hodnotení apod.

Year 2007

From March 31st to April 1st, 2007, a training for fish judges took place in Sielnica under the auspices of the Slovak Association of Fish Breeders (SZCH) and the Livebearer Fish Club. The Livebearer Fish Club brings together breeders from various clubs of the Slovak Association of Fish Breeders (SZCH) and organizes training for them, among other activities. In practice, we judge the Guppy and Xipho-Molly categories, including species such as Poecilia reticulata, Xiphophorus helleri, X. maculatus, X. variatus, Poecilia sphenops, P. velifera, and P. latipinna. Training sessions are also held in these categories. The club is just beginning to focus on training in the Betta splendens category. Nevertheless, club members participate as exhibitors in Betta fish competitions. Competitions take place at both the national and international levels, but there’s nothing stopping the club from participating in local competitions or exhibitions. After all, competitions are held for the joy of it.

I attended the training with Ivan Vyslúžil and Braňo Barčin. We arrived in Sielnica happily and an hour before the start of the training, so we gently stirred up the other participants and organizers with phone calls. At the beginning, we discussed the news from IKGH – the International Guppy Keepers’ Organization, which also oversees events like the European Championship. During the weekend, we partially familiarized ourselves with new initiatives in the Betta splendens standard. Since most of us not only judge fish but also exhibit them, during the training, we praised the results of individuals and the entire club. Several members achieved successes, but it seemed to me that Ivan Vyslúžil was collecting only gold ;-). No, of course, it’s not entirely true, but it must be said that within Slovakia, he is the most successful breeder in both the Xipho-Molly and Guppy categories. This year, three members became judges, thus expanding the ranks of senior judges. We waited for this moment for three years. Besides me, Braňo Barčin and Martin Fodor also became judges. This year, we focused primarily on Guppies. The main enthusiast, Marián Stieranka, prepared several, I would say, seminar inputs, and we practiced some of them. We talked about fin shapes, body and fin color, and evaluation, among other topics. An interesting discussion revolved around why top Guppy collections receive only 80 points, while Xipho-Molly collections score over 90 points. We discussed upcoming exhibitions and debated who would go where to judge. This year, there are several exhibitions in Slovakia, so we were keenly interested in the ones in Martin, Hrabušice, and Bratislava.

The training was conducted in a friendly atmosphere. Many of us seized the opportunity to exchange experiences and impressions. We had two lunches and one dinner together. During the day, we visited two aquariums owned by participants in the training. Unfortunately, I didn’t attend one of them, but I made up for it with my second visit to Rišo Tokušev after dinner. Some photos from these visits are included in the photo report. After a joint dinner, some of us still wanted more, so we spent some time in a local establishment. Everything was well taken care of, so we slept at the accommodation, and in the morning, we headed back to the training. On the second day – Sunday, we focused on the practical assessment of fish. We had mollies, swordtails, guppies, and even bettas at our disposal. We tried to collectively evaluate the bettas we had. After lunch, we said our goodbyes and headed home.

Jahr 2007

Vom 31.

W praktyce oceniamy kategorie Guppy i Xipho-Molly, obejmujące gatunki takie jak Poecilia reticulata, Xiphophorus helleri, X. maculatus, X. variatus, Poecilia sphenops, P. velifera i P. latipinna.

W szkoleniu wziąłem udział wraz z Ivanem Vyslúžilem i Braňo Barčinem. Dotarliśmy do Sielnicy szczęśliwie i godzinę przed rozpoczęciem szkolenia, więc delikatnie pobudziliśmy pozostałych uczestników i organizatorów telefonami.

Wielu z nas skorzystało z okazji do wymiany doświadczeń i wrażeń. Mieliśmy dwa obiady i jedną kolację wspólnie. Mieliśmy do dyspozycji mieczyki, mieczyki skrzydlatki, guppy i nawet bojowniki.

Pomôže aj to, ak najprv zapneme stolnú lampu mimo akvária (slabší zdroj svetla), prípadne luster, a nakoniec samotné svetlo nad akváriom.

Ľahko to môžeme vypozorovať počas noci, keď zrazu zasvietime. Živorodky, tetry, mrenky nám zakrátko potom ožijú, pričom skalárom, ostatným cichlidám prebúdzanie bude trvať oveľa dlhšie – akoby neochotne. Správanie rýb ovplyvňuje aj ročné obdobie. My to len veľmi ťažko vieme napodobniť.

Rivalita medzi rybami existuje.

Úzko to súvisí s teritorialitou.

Behavior of fish can be observed by each of us. By their behavior, fish actually communicate with us. Since we cannot capture their possible sound expressions, we have no other option. If we learn something about their behavior, we will be able to help them better, it will help us estimate their condition, physiological needs, etc. Therefore, I will try to present you with some of my observations. The overall behavior of fish is species-specific, for example, labyrinth fish are usually peaceful under normal conditions, tetras are often shoaling, social types. Some fish find their living space in various parts of the water column. Catfish mainly inhabit the bottom, tetras swim in the middle of the aquarium, danios in the upper part, and minnows practically throughout the water column. Fish occasionally rub against a solid substrate. If this activity increases, it probably won’t be social behavior, but the emergence or existing fungal or other infection attacking the body surface.

In case the tank has too few fish, they may behave scared and timid. The situation depends on the aquarium structure – decorations, distribution of plants, their size, morphology, aquarium size, but of course also on the surrounding fish. In such a case, it is probably appropriate to intervene, increase the number of hiding places (sometimes even decrease or change them), let the tank get more overgrown, or gently turn off the lighting, reduce filter flow, aeration, or simply increase the number of fish in the aquarium. However, some fish species are expressly timid, or they exhibit more or less nocturnal behavior – for example, several species of catfish.

Fish and plants generally react more or less positively to light. Plants photosynthesize and respire, turn towards the light, etc. Fish, during sufficient light, swim intensively and perform most activities. They do not tolerate light shocks, so some aquarists use dimmers – this way, they mitigate any sudden light influx. It imitates the sunrise and sunset. In any case, it helps if we turn on artificial lighting even before it gets dark. The worse case is a sudden light influx rather than its sudden shortage. It also helps if we first turn on a desk lamp outside the aquarium (a weaker light source) or a chandelier, and finally the light above the aquarium. Fish react irritably to a sudden increase in light – they start swimming rapidly, some species try to jump, which can cause injury from decorations. Although fish cannot close their eyes, they sleep at night. Apparently, it depends on the amount of light – much more than maintaining a natural cycle, e.g., a 12-hour cycle. So, by shining more than is natural, or irregularly, we tire the fish because we force them not to sleep. Most species change their color at night – contrast, colorfulness, generally the fish usually darkens.

It is interesting how fish wake up. It is known that many species tend to spawn early in the morning. Some species wake up very quickly, while others wake up very slowly. You can easily observe this during the night when suddenly we turn on the light. Livebearers, tetras, and minnows liven up shortly afterward, while angelfish, other cichlids, waking up will take much longer – as if reluctantly. The behavior of fish is also influenced by the seasons. We find it very difficult to mimic it. In nature, reproduction often occurs at the end of the dry season, and fish often develop during the first days of the rainy season. For most species, the most natural time for spawning in captivity is spring. Hormonal activity of sexual functions is at its highest during this time. It is essential to realize that the species we keep come from tropical and subtropical regions, where there are no seasons like ours. Therefore, if we want to be consistent, let’s keep this in mind.

In nature, promiscuity is common, but some species are faithful – they form pairs for a lifetime. This phenomenon is common in American cichlids. During the spawning period, which can be time-limited, but not necessarily, fish behave differently. They often change their color during this period. For example, male guppies Poecilia reticulata often chase females for hours. Nevertheless, behavior during spawning and trying to gain favor is accompanied by reduced vigilance against danger, males are often in a trance-like state, vibrating their entire bodies, especially their fins, constantly gaining a better position for the sought-after female or for multiple females. They literally compete in displaying themselves for admiration.

The act of reproduction itself also varies. For example, the female releases eggs into the free water, and the male responds by releasing sperm into the free space. Fish can lay eggs on leaves, stones, the upper side of a flowerpot from below, there are no limits to imagination. However, I will return to behavior – some species approach each other before releasing their gametes, touch bellies, and then a sudden twitch occurs, during which fertilization takes place. Or the male flips part of his body over the female, a sudden twitch occurs, and the situation is similar.

When reproducing mouthbrooders, the male usually prefers the one he wants to mate with, and after a complicated series of gestures, the female releases the eggs, and the male picks them up and carries them in his mouth. The process is repeated for some time. Even if a male and female of the same species are in the same tank, it is not certain that they will succeed. It also depends on their condition and, especially, on the type of environment. Sometimes the females hide” for the males by swimming in a water column inaccessible to the males. Sometimes it is not easy for males to approach females, for example, due to the presence of other males. Each fish has its territorial instinct, and although it is not as developed as in turtles or especially in reptiles, fish are also territorial to a greater or lesser extent. Even species that do not seem territorial at all may be so. They may have a need for private space, e.g., a specific hole or a piece of the shore. The best example of this is the stone picker. They need their personal stone to hide under, and if we change the stones, they react agitatedly. This also applies to other bottom-dwelling species.

Fish, however, may have different territories during the day than at night. No matter how bad we can estimate this, fish recognize each other very well, especially individuals of the same species. This happens very often when we introduce a new individual into the aquarium – the newcomers are immediately accepted, or on the contrary, there is aggression from all sides. The same species of fish usually form groups. Each group has its order of hierarchy. This order is often complex, and it depends on the size of individuals, their sex, age, but also on other circumstances. Often, but not always, the biggest fish is the most dominant. Dominance can also change, especially when we change the sex ratio in the aquarium. It is not uncommon for males to be dominant, and sometimes, especially with some small species, the most dominant individual is female. Moreover, it is not uncommon for both sexes to have their own hierarchy – there are more dominant and more submissive females as well as males. Every hierarchy is based on social ties. Individuals of different ranks are in constant interaction with each other, often this is played out even during hunting.

It is very difficult to distinguish the courtship behavior of the sexes. Females sometimes play dead to attract males, sometimes they just swim near them, give them a wink”, a few circling and chasing movements, etc. Similar behavior occurs in males. Some of them dance around females, show off their colors, expand their fins. Often the courtship ends with a kind of wedding parade”, where the male tries to lead the female to a specific spot where the female lays the eggs and the male fertilizes them. Other species of fish are also very intriguing. If we compare catfish to livebearers, we see a significant difference. Catfish build nests in cavities, tunnels, places they prepare for spawning. The construction of a good catfish male can take several days. If he is a mature male, he quickly lets the female know. If she is interested, they mate. After the female lays the eggs, the male collects them and places them in the hole or at the entrance to the cave. There is a certain period of rest”. During this time, the male looks after the eggs and carefully aerates them by constantly changing them and carrying them in his mouth.

If the male is inexperienced, he may accidentally swallow some eggs. If he is experienced, he will not do this. If something happens to the male, and the eggs are left unattended, it can end badly. It depends on the type of catfish whether the male will let any other fish in, whether he will attack them, etc. In nature, catfish are very vulnerable during this period. They often do not eat at all, lose a lot of body weight, and sometimes they are covered with algae. The situation is similar for several cichlids. However, unlike catfish, cichlids are very aggressive. They aggressively drive away any fish that approach their nests. They care about the offspring jointly – the female defends the nest, the male collects new offspring in his mouth and, if necessary, carries the eggs or fry in his mouth. It also happens that the female takes turns with the male, and they alternate in the nest. In other cases, the male does not release the female from the vicinity of the nest and even the fry are there for some time until they are quite large. The above description is very brief, but it contains the most important information. I hope that these behaviors will help you interpret the observed phenomena in the aquarium better.
