Korunkovky

Hits: 471

Niektoré druhy rastú vo vysokých nadmorských výškach 2800 – 4000 metrov nad morom v Himalájach (Kiani et all).

U nás korunkovka strakatá rastie na vlhkých lúkach s bohatou pôdou. Vyžaduje glejové až pseudoglejové pôdy s vysokou vlhkosťou, občas zaplavované. Najčastejšie sa objavuje v rámci biotopov spoločenstiev Calthion palustris a Molinion caeruleae.

Hlavnými opeľovačmi sú hmyz – včely, motýle (Kiani et all).

Približne 54 % druhov má šachovnicový vzor okvetných lístkov (Katarzyna Roguz et all).

Korunkovky obsahujú množstvo sekundárnych metabolitov, najmä: steroidné alkaloidy, saponíny, flavonoidy, terpenoidy (Da-Cheng Hao et all).

Fritillaries – the genus Fritillaria are flowering plants belonging to the lily family (Liliaceae). The name is derived from the Latin word fritillus, meaning a dice box (Adriana Francová). The genus includes approximately 130–150 species that occur naturally mainly in Europe, Asia, and North America. These are perennial bulbous plants that are popular in horticulture because of their striking flowers (cibuloviny.sk). Iran is one of the most important centers of diversity of the genus Fritillaria. Nineteen species occur there, ten of which are endemic. They are distributed mainly in the Zagros and Alborz mountain ranges. Many species grow in alpine and subalpine habitats, often forming local populations or extensive colonies on mountain meadows. Some species grow at very high elevations, between 2800 and 4000 meters above sea level in the Himalayas (Kiani et al.). The best-known species are the snake’s head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris) and the crown imperial (Fritillaria imperialis). Fritillaria meleagris is critically endangered and in Slovakia survives only in a few localities (stozok.sk). It is known locally as “korunka” and is considered a symbol of the arrival of spring (Katarína Balleková, Miloslav Smatana). Vernacular names vary and include “korunka,” “kockavica,” “hynčiak,” or “kráľovská koruna.”

In our region, the snake’s head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris) grows in moist meadows with nutrient-rich soils. It requires gleyic to pseudogley soils with high moisture, which are occasionally flooded. It most commonly occurs within the habitats of plant communities Calthion palustris and Molinion caeruleae. The species is adapted to short-term flooding during the vegetation period – its seeds are able to float (Jozef Martinský). The best-known species are the snake’s head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris) and the crown imperial (Fritillaria imperialis). The snake’s head fritillary is critically endangered, and in Slovakia it survives only in a few localities (stozok.sk). It is known as “korunka”, a symbol of the arrival of spring (Katarína Balleková, Miloslav Smatana). Vernacular names vary and include “korunka,” “kockavica,” “hynčiak,” “kráľovská koruna,” or “cisárska koruna.” In Slovakia it occurs mainly in the eastern part of the country; well-known sites include Pstruša, Raškovský luh, Senianske rybníky, and the meadows near Drahňov (Andrea Šimková, Soňa Zlacká). Localities in the Danubian Lowland (Podunajská nížina) and the Podpoľanie region have also been protected partly because of abundant populations of the snake’s head fritillary (stozok.sk). In the past the species also occurred in the surroundings of Zemplínska Šírava. In parts of the Czech Republic, however, it has already become extinct as a consequence of drainage of wetlands (Andrea Šimková, Soňa Zlacká). The main threats are drainage of meadows, land reclamation, and the disappearance of traditional mowing practices (Jozef Martinský).

Besides natural populations, crown imperial (Fritillaria imperialis) is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant in gardens throughout Slovakia (Andrea Šimková, Soňa Zlacká). These are perennial plants that produce tall stems in spring bearing pendulous, bell-shaped flowers that resemble a crown (Miloš Balla). The plants have an upright stem, narrow linear or lanceolate leaves, and their fruit is a capsule containing flattened seeds (sav.sk). The flowers are bisexual. It is likely that within the tribe Lilieae two dispersal events across the Bering land bridge occurred into North America, one in each genus – Lilium and Fritillaria (inaturalist.org). Fritillaries are commonly found in horticultural trade. Some schools and institutions, for example the Latorica Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Latorica), the State Nature Conservancy of the Slovak Republic (ŠOP SR), and the DAPHNE Institute, organize children’s creative workshops called “Korunkovka,” involving themed ceramics and art activities (Miloš Balla).

Successful cultivation and propagation of fritillaries requires appropriate conditions: sufficient winter moisture, sandy-loam soil, and a sunny or partially shaded location (kew.org). The plants respond to high soil moisture levels, and modern gardeners often use them as nectar-producing and decorative plants in spring plantings (Andrea Šimková, Soňa Zlacká). The main pollinators are insects, especially bees and butterflies (Kiani et al.). Crown imperial (Fritillaria imperialis) is poisonous, with the bulb being the most toxic part. The bulb emits a strong odor that repels certain small pests, especially moles and voles, making the plant useful in gardens as a natural deterrent (cibuloviny.sk). Although fritillary flowers are clearly visible to pollinators, they usually lack strong visual signals for attracting insects. The rewards for pollinators – nectar and pollen – are usually hidden inside the pendulous bell-shaped flower. Inside the flower there are contrasting nectar guide areas that help pollinators orient themselves while searching for food. Approximately 54 % of species have a checkered pattern on the tepals (Roguz et al.).

The most commonly cultivated species include Fritillaria acmopetala, Fritillaria imperialis, Fritillaria meleagris, Fritillaria pallidiflora, Fritillaria persica, and Fritillaria pyrenaica (inaturalist.org). The bulbs should not be planted too deeply in the soil; it is recommended to plant them slightly tilted. If the plant produces only leaves and does not flower, the bulb is probably planted too deep. Rapidly drying flowers indicate insufficient water or nutrient-poor soil (Adriana Francová). In traditional Chinese medicine, fritillaries are used to treat respiratory diseases (Imrich Rutšek). The plants contain numerous secondary metabolites, particularly steroidal alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, and terpenoids (Da-Cheng Hao et al.).

Marhát

Hits: 13633

Z halštatskej doby železný sekeromlat a skýtske strelky. Neďaleko hradiska na južnom svahu Marhátu sa našlo osem otvorených nákrčníkov so stočenými očkami na koncoch, otvorený nákrčník so zašpicatenými koncami, dva kosáky s jazykovitou rukoväťou, sekerka s tuľajkou a postranným uškom, dláto s tuľajkou, dva tyčinkovité náramky s geometricky rytou výzdobou a plechový špirálovitý náramok bez výzdoby z doby 8. storočia p.n.l.. Nález spadá do lužickej kultúry. Z doby laténskej pochádza strieborná bójska minca s okrídleným koníkom z polovice 2. st. pnl., fragmenty spôn a strelky so spätným háčikom a spona s voľnou pätkou.

Z nich som pokračoval cez Výtoky, Moravany až do Piešťan.

Peak Marhát is the highest point of the Krahulčie vrchy, situated at an elevation of 748.2 meters above sea level. The summit hosted prehistoric settlements, including a hillfort from the late Bronze Age and early Iron Age. The Hallstatt hillfort was fortified with an embankment and stone structure, serving as a crucial guard point for the trade route across Považský Inovec from Ponitria to Považie. Terraced settlements have been preserved on the southeast slopes (idnes.cz). The name Marhát is derived from the names „Marharii, Mereheni,“ which referred to ancient Moravian tribes (rotundajurko.sk). As the trade route shifted over time, the significance of the hillfort as a guard post diminished. Ceramics and occasional findings of iron and bronze objects from the late Bronze Age and Iron Age have been discovered in the vicinity. Noteworthy artifacts include an Iron Age axe-hammer and Scythian arrows. Eight open neck rings with coiled ends, a neck ring with pointed ends, two sickles with tongue-shaped handles, an axe with a socket, a chisel with a socket, two rod-shaped bracelets with geometrically incised decorations, and a spiral-like metal bracelet without ornamentation from the 8th century BCE were found near the hillfort. This discovery is associated with the Lusatian culture. From the La Tène period, a silver Boii coin with a winged horse from the mid-2nd century BCE, fragments of buckles, and arrows with a barbed hook and a buckle with a free heel have been unearthed. Approximately half of the settlements from the Hallstatt period in the vicinity are located around the Marhát hillfort (nitrianskablatnica.sk). In the 9th century, a hillfort refuge was established on Marhát (Marek).

Marhát forms a barrier primarily protecting the villages of Nitrianska Blatnica, Vozokany, and Lipovník. Due to geological conditions, the terrain is very rugged. The historical context, majesty, and proximity of Marhát likely inspired the tradition of New Year’s Eve hikes, which began around 1947. On October 28, 1947, the people of Blatnica erected a large iron cross on the summit as thanks to God for protection during World War II (mana2.sk). The initiative for the construction came from the then-priest of Blatnica, Ján Laktiš (mana2.sk). The cross bore the inscription „God, protect the tourists.“ Later, an observation tower was built on Marhát, offering a beautiful view of the surroundings. Since the fall of 2008, a new 17-meter-high observation tower has been in place. It provides a view of the castles Tematín, Čachtice, Uhrovec, Gymeš, and Oponice (Piešťanský týždeň). Supposedly, under ideal conditions, the borders of the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Austria can be seen from Marhát (rotundajurko.sk). A new cross has now been placed at the highest point.

Climbs are always organized on December 31. Since 1971, these climbs have been organized under the auspices of organized tourists. Today, the climbs are organized by the Slovak Tourist Club TJ Bezovec Piešťany. Participants receive a diploma, primarily appreciated by children. An interesting idea was the Marhát euro-ducat in 2008. A small refreshment awaits tourists at the summit – bacon, sausages, tea. Fireplaces are prepared. Many find it useful to replenish their strength, have some fun, or at least greet and wish each other a happy New Year. Some even sing together. Many only meet this way on New Year’s Eve. Every year, a group photo is taken under the banner. These and other similar photos are a nice memory. Some of these photos from the past are on the shelters under the observation tower. The Bezovec club also has a chronicle of such photos. Summit books, containing many interesting references, are also archived under the observation tower. They offer a diverse picture of who comes to Marhát and from where. The event officially ends at lunchtime. Nevertheless, many continue to visit Marhát later. In recent years, attendance has exceeded a thousand participants.

I dare say that the behavior of people coming here is changing. They are more considerate each year. Due to the lower capacity of Marhát, people tend to separate into smaller groups at the summit and just below. Many come in groups. Participants also respect the request to refrain from using pyrotechnics in the mountains. Noise is allowed only in the form of bursts of laughter and sect shots.

The landscape on Marhát is always different from the lower elevations where the climb usually begins. It undoubtedly possesses a charm for which many are willing to tread the hills. It happens that there is mud at the bottom and a snowy blanket on top. Occasionally, there are innovations on the trees. Sometimes, it blows strongly; other times, the landscape is bathed in sunlight. Marhát can be reached by various routes, each slightly different. Shorter, easier routes suitable for bicycles and cross-country skis can be chosen. Most likely, many will opt for the route from Nitrianska Blatnica. On this route, you pass through „Jurko,“ a Romanesque rotunda of St. George, the second oldest structure from Great Moravia in our region. Pilgrimages are regularly held here several times a year. A slightly different character is provided by the shortest route from Vozokany or Lipovník. The route from Výtoky is very common. Especially downhill from Marhát to Výtoky can be done on sleds very quickly. Less common routes are from Modrá horárna, Stara Lehotka, Bezovec, Havran, Zlatý vrch, and Tematín. Of course, you can drive by car to Jelenie jamy and go only from there.

I consider the most beautiful route to be from Modrá horárna and Stara Lehotka. Usually, however, I take the bus to Vozokany, climb to Marhát, and then continue back through Jelenie jamy, Gonove lazy, to Výtoky. I pass by Striebornica, through Moravany, where I sometimes stop for a meal. Then I cross the spa island to Piešťany. Upon arrival, I am pleasantly tired after the kilometers walked, and I feel that I have done something good for myself and others. In 2009, the weather was the most beautiful I had experienced during my climbs. In the lower altitudes, the forests were shrouded in fog, while higher up, the sun peeked out, shining on the solid snow cover beneath a blue sky with clouds. I hope I have inspired you with a way to celebrate the last day of the year.

At the end of 2007, the bus took us from Piešťany to Nitrianska Blatnica. Then my journey upwards began on my own :-). This year, a lot of people came to the “ summit.“ I arrived around 11 AM. I wandered through the beautiful, snowy landscape. Organizers had prepared a bonfire at the top, where people grilled, warmed up, registered, and received tea, sausages, and bacon. Gradually, since I was also cold, I set off back, but by a different route. I went to Jelenie jamy, to the crossroads, and from there, I descended to Gonove lazy. From there, I continued through Výtoky, Moravany, all the way to Piešťany.

Trasa – Marhát – Piešťany – rok 2010

V roku 2010 som na Marhát prišiel veľmi neskoro, na vrchu už nebol skoro nikto. Pre fotografovanie to bolo svojím spôsobom veľmi vhodné. Navyše krajina bola v ten deň naozaj kvalitne zasnežená.

Filtrácia

Hits: 25124

Chemickú a fyzikálnu filtráciu akýchkoľvek filtrov dokáže zabezpečiť rašelina, hnedé uhlie, drvený vápenec, mramor, jelšové šišky, aktívne uhlie, ióntomeniče, piesok obohatený o soľ, prípadne jedlú sóda, zeolit.

Filtering the aquarium is practically essential. It ensures the even distribution of both positive and negative components in the tank water and the filtration of water through filter media—capturing impurities and possibly transforming them. Contemplating a thriving aquarium without a filter is only possible in tanks specifically focused on plants. The most commonly used filter media is called biomolitan, which is a material similar to foam but does not contain phenols. It is usually made based on polyurethane. Filtration can also be done through a compressor and a small, regular mechanical foam filter. Especially in small tanks and nano aquariums, filters often referred to as compact filters are commonly used. When such a filter is very restricted by a valve, it is commonly referred to as a drip filter in aquarium practice. This type of filter only minimally propels water, which, however, is sufficient for freshly hatched fry or developing eggs. Filters can be either external or internal. The difference is that the main part of an external filter is located outside the aquarium, which comes with many advantages. However, it is more expensive than an internal filter.

For ponds, special filters are used depending on how strong they should be, whether they will be submersible or push water upwards or downwards. Often, especially in the case of breeders or in stores specializing in aquariums, you can encounter a solution where a small pump is simply fitted with foam without any casing. It is essential to realize that the more important function of filtration occurs inside the foam—mechanical filtration is secondary. It is, of course, possible to combine them or adapt external and internal filters. Under normal circumstances, an internal filter acts as an oxidizer. Besides other substances, all nutrients are trapped on the filter media, and internal filters are excellent iron (Fe) consumers. The use of organic complexes that can bind iron, such as the decay of leaves (preferably old ones) or the decay of wood, prevents this. The internal filter needs to be cleaned not only for aesthetic but mainly physiological reasons. If we did not do so, decomposition processes in it would consume oxygen to such an extent that it would endanger the existence of fish in the aquarium. However, how often this needs to be done depends on the nature of our population, whether fish excrete a large amount of waste, how well plants can process them, how much we feed, but it can be said that sooner rather than later.

The filter’s performance is a serious matter for the aquarium enthusiast. There is probably no all-encompassing recipe to follow. Filters in the offerings of specialized stores usually have the recommended tank volume for which they are intended. For a population demanding in filter volume, I recommend getting a filter with a flow rate exceeding twice the tank volume. On the contrary, for a planted aquarium, I recommend a filter with a flow rate smaller than the tank volume. For a typical community aquarium, the optimum filter is probably capable of circulating about 1.5 times the tank volume. For planted tanks with proper feeding, I recommend a performance lower than 0.5 times the tank volume—a slow-flow filter. If you decide on an external filter, you must count on a higher investment. However, such a solution is generally better—for fish, for plants, for its maintenance. Under certain circumstances, its biological nature can be considered, so we may sometimes come across the term biological filter in this context. Everything depends on the solution and perspective. A significant part of the external filter is used outside the tank when it is used—space is required for it. Chemical and physical filtration of any filters can be provided by peat, brown coal, crushed limestone, marble, spruce cones, activated charcoal, ion exchangers, salt-enriched sand, or baking soda. Biological filtration can be provided by materials such as the aforementioned foam, ceramic material, lava, tuff, or a material with a large surface area. I prefer to use Powerhead heads or something similar and biomolitan, which I cut myself. In some tanks, I use a slow-flow filter. It happens occasionally that you need to get more air into the tank. I recommend connecting a hose to the part designated for it on the top of the filter and regulating it as needed at the end of the hose. The air then flows more efficiently—under higher pressure, and the introduced gas is composed of smaller particles. Excessive aeration is not suitable.

In Banská Štiavnica, the annual celebration of the city, known as Salamander Days, takes place. In 2009, I was present during the last day of this event. I witnessed various activities, including a children’s theater, a fair-like event, and several musical performances. The photos feature folk music from the Hungarian town of Sopron, with which Banská Štiavnica has a longstanding partnership. They delighted me with their cheerfulness. There was also a part of the fair where Sopron was presented. Later, the Czech group Terne Čhave caught my attention.

Originally, the Salamander was a festive procession of students from the Banská Štiavnica Academy. It always took place after dusk, illuminated by miner’s lamps and torches. After 1919, when the Mining and Forestry University moved to Sopron, the rich social life ceased. It was revived after 1935. After World War II, the tradition of Salamander processions was restored on September 10, 1949. However, until 1993, it only occurred eight times. Since 1993, it has been held annually in the second week of September. The name is derived from the movement of the spotted salamander. Mimicking its movement, the procession crosses the street, creating a captivating theater with period lighting. The parade includes 580 figures, mainly depicting the work and life of the city’s inhabitants. The procession moves slowly and gracefully, undulating from one side of the street to the other (banskastiavnica.sk).
