Riasy

Najmä Poecilia sphenops, Xiphophorus helleri, Gyrinocheilus aymonieri, Crossocheilus siamensis, Otocinclus, Epalzeorhynchus, Labeo, Helostoma temmincki, Ancistrus atď. Z kreviet najmä Caridina japonica, Neocaritida denticulata.

Savo zriedime v pomere 1:20. Jemnolisté rastliny znesú 2 – 3 minúty, väčšina rastlín 3 minúty, rastliny s tuhšími listami ako Anubias, Echinodorus, Crypotocoryne 3 – 4 minúty. Stačí ich ponoriť do pripraveného roztoku a následne poriadne prepláchnuť vo vode. Samozrejme aplikujte tento postup mimo akvária, napr. v kýbli. Takto môžeme zbaviť rias aj štrk, kamene apod., ostane doslova vybielený.

Algae

I would like to emphasize that algae are plants. They do not belong to higher plants – Magnoliophyta like most available aquatic plants, but rather to lower plants Algae – algae. Algae are part of the aquarium, trying to prevent them from being in the aquarium at all is an uneven battle and ultimately unnecessary. An aquarium without algae looks unnaturally sterile.

Algae are closely related to the amount of light. It is not easy at all to ensure optimal lighting conditions for our specific case. I consider it most important to achieve optimal growth of higher plants. In this case, higher plants can cope with a competitively weaker opponent. However, algae can react to changes much faster than higher plants. If you have a planted aquarium, I recommend covering the open bottom with plants by more than 75%. In that case, aquatic plants can effectively process even larger amounts of light and nutrients. They can to some extent compensate for higher energy inputs as well.

Algae are most commonly eliminated mechanically. I recommend a rough sponge for dishes or a soft wire. I do not recommend a razor blade, magnetic scraper, but even with a sponge or wire, be careful not to accidentally scratch the glass with gravel pieces during cleaning, especially on the front glass, it is unpleasant.

Biological means against algae include, for example, snails. But some fish also consume algae. Especially Poecilia sphenops, Xiphophorus helleri, Gyrinocheilus aymonieri, Crossocheilus siamensis, Otocinclus, Epalzeorhynchus, Labeo, Helostoma temmincki, Ancistrus, etc. Of shrimp, especially Caridina japonica, Neocaritida denticulata. It is important to note that for some of these organisms, algae are a natural food, but often, if they have enough other food, they prefer it. Black algae are reliably eaten only by the Chinese algae eater – Gyrinocheilus aymonieri and shrimp Caridina japonica. In nature, microscopic algae are consumed by small crustaceans – cyclops, rotifers, daphnia. Relying on biological means in case of higher algae occurrence is naive. In that case, it’s better to roll up your sleeves and get to work.

Algae can be effectively removed by the action of ultraviolet radiation. UV lamps can be purchased in pet stores, or you can make them yourself. It works on the principle of UV radiation acting on water passing through a tube, in which water is propelled by a filter, theoretically by some pump. The water passing through is exposed to radiation, which kills algae spores, of course, as well as pathogenic spores. The lamp acts on the water passing into the aquarium, thus protecting the water from algae. In the case of turbidity, direct exposure of the lamp’s light to the water can be used – but in that case, it is necessary to protect the eyes and not have fish or plants in the tank.

Algae can also be removed chemically, using products available in pet stores or at pet fairs. Some are based on copper, which is not suitable for some species, e.g., catfish. I recommend using products from EasyLife or Seachem. For example, AlgExit. Partially, effective fertilizer Carbo can be used, which if applied a few times directly to the problematic bunch of algae, can eventually kill even resistant algae.

Water flow also affects algae. The well-known black bristle algae, which belongs to red algae, thrives in strong flow, often found mainly on the filter, at its outlet. With an excess of light and nutrients, green and red algae are created. Brown algae occur in aquariums exceptionally in case of insufficient light. For example, in breeding tanks, or in case the aquarist does not shine enough, especially for a long time.

As a proven tool against bristle algae, the use of bleach can also be mentioned. Bleach naturally destroys all algae. Dilute the bleach at a ratio of 1:20. Fine-leaved plants tolerate 2 – 3 minutes, most plants 3 minutes, plants with tougher leaves like Anubias, Echinodorus, Cryptocoryne 3 – 4 minutes. Just immerse them in the prepared solution and then rinse thoroughly in water. Of course, apply this procedure outside the aquarium, e.g., in a bucket. This way, we can also get rid of algae, gravel, stones, etc., which will literally be bleached.

Algen

Besonders Poecilia sphenops, Xiphophorus helleri, Gyrinocheilus aymonieri, Crossocheilus siamensis, Otocinclus, Epalzeorhynchus, Labeo, Helostoma temmincki, Ancistrus usw.

Najznámejšie sú zelené riasyChlorophyta a červené riasy Rhodophyta. Sú však napr.aj hnedé riasyPhaephyceae, rozsievkyBacillariophyceae. Medzi známe druhy patrí Chlorella – jednobunková riasa schopná do zelena totálne ” zafarbiť” celú nádrž. V akvaristike sa preto používa termín zelený zákal, všeobecne sa používa termín vodný kvet. Medzi červené riasy patrí napr. Audouinella. Riasy sú rovnako ako vyššie rastliny asimilátory hmoty, obdobným spôsobom viažu svetlo, a tvoria organickú hmotu a ako vedľajší produkt kyslík.

Tzv. vodný kvet najmä v eutrofizovaných jazerách a nádržiach tvoria často mikroskopické druhy Chlorella pyrenoidosa, Volvox aureus. Draparnaldia, Tetraspora gelatinosa, Hydrodictyon reticulatum, Euglena. Dajú sa pomerne ťažko zo skla.

Green Algae

The most well-known are green algae – Chlorophyta and red algae – Rhodophyta. However, there are also brown algae – Phaeophyceae, diatoms – Bacillariophyceae, for example. Among the well-known species is Chlorella – a single-celled algae capable of completely coloring” the entire tank green. In aquarium keeping, the term green water” is used, while the general term water bloom” is also commonly used. Among the red algae is, for example, Audouinella. Algae, like higher plants, are assimilators of matter, bind light in a similar way, and produce organic matter and oxygen as a by-product.

The so-called water bloom, especially in eutrophic lakes and reservoirs, is often formed by microscopic species such as Chlorella pyrenoidosa, Volvox aureus. In the case of green water, common methods such as water changes, sedimentation, but especially total tank blackout for some time, can help. After this unaesthetic procedure, it is advisable to again replace a large amount of water. Another common type is the long filamentous green algae such as Pithophora, Oedogonium, Cladophora, which are relatively difficult to remove. Perhaps the most effective method is mechanical winding on a spindle or similar tool. However, they are eaten by livebearers, Ancistrus, Crossocheilus siamensis, Gyrinocheilus aymonieri, etc. Unlike brush algae, it is not so firmly anchored in the plants, so damage to the plants rarely occurs when removed. Savo bath can also be applied to hair algae. Algae forming small colonies, similar to brown algae on leaves, include Draparnaldia, Tetraspora gelatinosa, Hydrodictyon reticulatum, Euglena. They can be quite difficult to remove from glass.

Red Algae

Among the red algae – Rhodophyta, the previously mentioned brush algae can be an unwelcome guest. It is often also referred to as black algae. It is characterized by chromatic adaptation – it changes its photosynthetic pigments (color) depending on the current light conditions. It usually infiltrates through imported plants, water from another tank, snails, or even fish. The transfer of algae with water from another tank can occur very innocently – the algae is accidentally transferred. Spores of algae are sufficient for a successful” introduction. The main source of nutrition for algae is primarily older leaves of higher plants.

Taxonomically, it is several species such as Audouinella, Compsopogon, Batrachospermum moniliforme, Lemanea. Aquarists’ experiences with it vary. Generally, red algae and also black algae” thrive in nutrient excess. For example, they often occur very frequently in the summer and gradually begin to disappear from the aquarium from September. Their growth is influenced by daylight. They thrive in too much light. This algae is usually black, but its color can also be dark blue or dark green. It adheres practically everywhere, to plants, to the substrate, to the shells of snails, to the aquarium glass, it disrupts the film on the walls, etc. It holds very firmly, and it is mechanically very problematic to remove it from the surface of the plants. Usually, when trying to remove it, we also tear off a part of the plant. From personal experience, I know that it is difficult to remove it even with a wire brush from hard stone.

Black algae can also be fought in a more natural way. First and foremost, the nutrient intake should be reduced. There are several options for this – for example, removing sediment more frequently, changing the water more often, possibly increasing the amount during a change, feeding less, providing less light, moving the aquarium to a darker place.

Rote Algen

Niektoré druhy: Stephanodiscus bellus, Gomphonema geminatum, Hydrurus foetidus, Tabellaria ventricosa, Cymbella cistula.

Brown Algae

Brown algae – require different conditions than green and red algae. Among this type of algae, aquarists also include diatoms – Bacillariophyceae (Diatomae). Brown algae often appear shortly after the tank is set up. Their presence usually diminishes quickly and gradually disappears. However, if the presence is persistent, it is likely that our aquarium has not been provided with enough light. Brown algae mainly attach to the walls of the tank, but they can also be found on the surface of plants. Therefore, the solution to this situation is very simple: increasing the amount of light. Some species include: Stephanodiscus bellus, Gomphonema geminatum, Hydrurus foetidus, Tabellaria ventricosa, Cymbella cistula.

Braune Algen

Riasy a vyššie rastliny patria medzi eukaryotické organizmy.

Algae

Algae do not belong to plants (seaweed), but they are often classified among them. They are often referred to as blue-green algae. They are usually truly blue-green, which is caused by the pigment phycocyanin, but they can also be brown-black. Algae and higher plants belong to eukaryotic organisms. Algae are prokaryotic organisms unlike seaweed, plants, and animals. They are related to bacteria. Their metabolic products are harmful to fish, and at high concentrations, also to humans – let’s remember, for example, the ban on swimming in Kuchajda in Bratislava, but also in other bodies of water. They are often slimy in consistency and occur at high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus. Algae are very resilient opponents, the same procedures apply to eliminate them as in the case of seaweed. Some species: Aphanizomenon gracile, Rivularia haematites, Anabaena flos-aquae, Mycrocystis auruginosa, Oscillatoria limosa. It is not easy to get rid of them; I recommend using products from EasyLife, Seachem, etc. Interestingly, Malawi cichlids are one of the few groups of fish that consume algae.

Algen

When treating water, caution is necessary. Knowledge of chemistry is useful. It is necessary to realize that without responsibility towards living organisms, it is not ethical to approach experiments with changes in water parameters. It is useful to familiarize oneself with the parameters of water. Qualitatively, all changes can be made by mixing with water of different properties. Monitoring water parameters, adjusting hardness, and pH are often overemphasized. Fish bred for generations in captivity are often adapted to our conditions. It is not paramount for fish and plants to live in water with the same pH and hardness as they do in nature, but to meet as many conditions as possible for their successful development. Do not get lost in constant measurements and attempts to change. For regular aquarium practice, water parameters are overrated.

Pomôže staršia mraznička, chladiarenský prístroj a šikovný majster.

Raising the water temperature with a heater is quite common in various areas, not just in aquariums. However, a far more challenging problem is how to cool the water. This question is primarily addressed by aquarists dealing with the breeding of marine organisms. Here, the option to utilize the principle of Peltier cells presents itself. An old freezer, refrigeration device, and a skilled craftsman can help. The second option is purchasing from a store. Cooling water in this way is financially demanding. On a small scale, ice can be used, but it is dangerous – because melting ice requires a lot of energy. Ice is a solid substance and has a high thermal capacity – it requires more energy to transition to a liquid state for the same temperature change. Let’s proceed cautiously so we don’t have to experience temperature extremes.

Varom vyzrážame len uhličitanovú tvrdosť a to maximálne o 2.7 °dKH. Anacharis densa a živočíchov, najmä ulitníkov a lastúrnikov znižujú obsah Ca a Mg vo vode.

If we want to change the water hardness, with common inexpensive means, we can only increase it. We can increase the content of calcium and magnesium with calcium carbonate – CaCO3, magnesium carbonate – MgCO3, calcium sulfate – CaSO4, magnesium sulfate – MgSO4, calcium chloride – CaCl2. Naturally, for example, with limestone. However, if we want to achieve a quick change, we must use a stronger concentration. Finally, effective commercial products are available that can quickly increase hardness. However, a much more difficult question arises if we intend to decrease the hardness. It is possible to use precipitation with oxalic acid, but the equilibrium of this process is small. However, if we were able to filter this water mechanically with a very fine filter, we might achieve the desired result. Boiling water to reduce hardness is very uneconomical. The effect is minimal. Boiling only precipitates carbonate hardness, up to a maximum of 2.7 °dKH. In addition, boiling also destroys the little life that is in the water, so I do not recommend boiling. Activated charcoal partially reduces water hardness, similarly some types of plants such as Anacharis densa and animals, especially snails and crustaceans, reduce the content of Ca and Mg in the water. They are able to accumulate large amounts of calcium in their shells, as they are practically dependent on its occurrence. Ampullaria are able to bind a relatively large amount of calcium into their shells in larger quantities. Conversely, in its absence, their shells soften. Peat also reduces water hardness to a small extent. Mixing softer water is of course possible to achieve lower hardness, and it works linearly. For practical purposes, we have the following options in principle.

Distillation – In the distillation column, water is stripped of ions. Distillation generates a significant amount of wastewater. The use of large volumes of water is necessary because distillation involves high temperatures that need to be cooled. The distillation column is a considerable investment, used by breeders who have a larger number of tanks. The efficiency of distillation is very high. However, it must be said that distilled water is not very suitable for aquarium purposes. It is sterile water and very labile. Therefore, it is good to mix this water. Reverse osmosis is ideal for this reason. Technical distilled water from the store is not very suitable for aquarists. The operation of the distillation column itself does not undergo any significant wear and tear, and in any case, under normal use, it does not require high subsequent investments.

Oproti destilačnej sústave majú jednu veľkú nevýhodu v trvanlivosti – membrány a filtračné média osmotickej kolóny je nutné časom meniť, pretože inak reverzka prestane plniť svoju funkciu.

Reverse osmosis – a process that utilizes semipermeability. Osmosis is a known process in which the exchange of substances occurs due to osmotic pressure assuming semipermeability between two systems. For clarification – simple diffusion, mixing cannot occur because there is a boundary, an obstacle between two systems. But due to the fact that this boundary is semipermeable, thanks to osmotic pressure, the flow of substances occurs. Reverse osmosis also utilizes this, but with the difference that in reverse osmosis, ions are completely removed, there is no equalization of osmotic pressure on both sides. The water obtained in this way is suitable for aquarists. Finally, its efficiency is not as high as in distillation. Water from a reverse osmosis system typically reaches 110% of the original conductivity value. There are commercially available reverse osmosis units on the market that can be purchased. They do not take up as much space as distillation systems. However, compared to distillation systems, they have one major disadvantage in terms of durability – membranes and filtration media of the reverse osmosis unit need to be replaced over time because otherwise, the reverse osmosis system will fail to function properly.

Iontomeničom (Ionexom) – elektrolytická úprava cez katexanex, z ktorých jeden je záporne nabitý a priťahuje katióny a druhý kladne a priťahuje anióny.

Ion exchange (Ionex) – electrolytic treatment via a cathex and anex, one of which is negatively charged and attracts cations, and the other is positively charged and attracts anions. Water passes through these two main parts, and ions are bound to the individual parts. This achieves demineralization from ions. Ionex could also be easily assembled amateurishly. The problem is that cathex and anex have their capacity. Over time, it must be regenerated to maintain its physical properties and the entire system to be effective. Regeneration is carried out by the action of various specific substances, in some cases, kitchen salt. As an ion exchange (changer) for calcium, permutit, wofatit, and cabunit are used, for example. Selective ion exchangers are designed to eliminate certain elements – components in water. For nitrogen – N, monmorillonite, and clinoptiolite are suitable.

Reduction of conductivity is achieved by the same methods as described for water hardness. Similarly, increasing conductivity. The source water available to us typically has a slightly alkaline pH, with drinking tap water usually around 7.5. For many fish, it is suitable to increase the acidity to values around 6.5. We have several options – either change the pH purely chemically or more naturally. pH change is more effective when water contains fewer dissolved substances. If it contains a lot of salts, the pH change will be somewhat smaller, and any fluctuations in this value will be smaller. The effect of NaCl – salt on the pH of water is negligible for the aquarist because it is a salt of a strong base – NaOH and a strong acid – HCl, so it does not affect the pH. Practically, NaCl affects pH only because aquarium water is a solution containing various substances with which NaCl reacts. However, this effect is small and difficult to predict.

Ak by sme predsa len použili silné kyseliny: 2HCl + Ca(HCO3)2 = CaCl2 + 2H2CO3 – reakciou kyseliny chlorovodíkovej (soľnej) vzniká chlorid vápenatý.

For reducing pH, it is suitable to use weak phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄). H₃PO₄ is a weak acid. The amount necessary should be determined by experimentation. The pH change by any means also depends on the salt content, partially on temperature, and pressure. It can be roughly estimated that to lower the pH in a 100-liter tank, H₃PO₄ should be applied in milliliters. I do not recommend using other acids; however, for your safety, it should also be a weak acid of simple composition. H₃PO₄ is commonly used to reduce hardness. When using H₃PO₄, the following reactions occur (in the listed reactions, calcium Ca can be replaced with magnesium Mg):

2H₃PO₄ + 3Ca(HCO₃)₂ = Ca₃(PO₄)₂ + 6H₂CO₃ – acid reacts with calcium bicarbonate to form soluble calcium phosphate and weak carbonic acid. H₂CO₃ is unstable and can break down into water and carbon dioxide. The resulting phosphate can be fertilizer for fish, algae, or a source of phosphorus for fish.

2H₃PO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = Ca(H₂PO₄)₂ + 6H₂CO₃ – soluble dihydrogen phosphate calcium is formed.

H₃PO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = CaHPO₄ + 2H₂CO₃ – insoluble calcium hydrogen phosphate is formed.

If we were to use strong acids:

2HCl + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = CaCl₂ + 2H₂CO₃ – reaction of hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid) forms calcium chloride.

H₂SO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = CaSO₄ + 2H₂CO₃ – reaction of sulfuric acid forms calcium sulfate.

If the source water contains limestone, the water’s buffering capacity will be evident – calcium carbonate CaCO₃ reacts with the resulting carbonic acid to form bicarbonate, entering the carbonic acid cycle. In this way, our options to influence pH are limited. pH will decrease for a certain time, but not for long; this mainly depends on the concentration of bicarbonates (from CO₂) and the amount of acid used – it’s obvious that the buffering capacity has its limits. In the case of high water hardness, continuous CO₂ treatment is more effective.

2H₃PO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = Ca(H₂PO₄)₂ + 6H₂CO₃ – lösliches Dihydrogenphosphatcalcium entsteht.

H₃PO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = CaHPO₄ + 2H₂CO₃ – unlösliches Calciumdihydrogenphosphat entsteht.

Naturally, pH can also be lowered. Suitable options include alder cones, decaying wood, peat, peat extract, etc. However, everything depends on understanding the specific requirements of individual fish and plants. Some fish do not tolerate peat extract. Peat extract is often used for dips, for example, for tetra fish. Peat reduces pH. Decaying wood has its drawbacks. However, it can generally be said, especially for beginning aquarists, that using various materials in the aquarium is not as dangerous as most people think. On the contrary, their long-term and gradual activity makes their effect on pH change much more acceptable than using pure chemicals. Moreover, the nature of the acids leached from these materials often has a beneficial effect on fish health and plant growth. Humic acids, organic complexes, chelates, and other organic substances that are often a natural part of our fish and plants, even in their native habitats, play a role in this process.

To increase pH, baking soda – NaHCO3 is used. However, when it comes to raising pH, this purely chemical method is used to a much lesser extent. Naturally, pH can be best increased by using a substrate. Carbonates contained in limestone, travertine commonly shift pH valuesto levels above 8. A very simple water adjustment is the use of salt. If we want to achieve a constant level of salt, do not forget to add salt during water changes and top-ups. Salt is used for some types of fish, especially for brackish species. Brackish species live in nature at the intersection of fresh and saltwater, for example, at the mouths of large rivers into the sea. Salt is also recommended for some livebearers. Livebearers live in waters of moderate hardness in South and North America. The appropriate dosage for guppies is 2 – 3 tablespoons of salt per 40 liters of water. For black mollies – a typical brackish species – even a little more, 5 tablespoons per 40 liters of water. We can use both table and sea salt, which can be obtained in stores. When starting with salt application, let’s be cautious at first, proceed carefully, and let the fish gradually get used to the salt, as osmotic pressure is tricky. A sudden change in conductivity caused by a sudden increase in NaCl will lead to negative stress – especially the surface – the fish’s skin is susceptible to damage. This property is utilized in treatment.

Salt is recommended for African lake cichlids. They contain relatively high concentrations of sodium – Na. In literature, up to 0.5 kg per 100 liters of water is mentioned, but I recommend one tablespoon per 40 liters of water. Salt appears to act as a transporter of metabolic processes and a catalyst. NaCl dissociates first into sodium cation and chlorine anion. Chlorine acts as a disinfectant, and sodium participates in biological reactions. Organic dyes, drugs can be successfully removed by activated carbon, partially by peat. Activated carbon has a wide range of applications. It is a relatively effective prevention against infection because it adsorbs a lot of harmful substances. It works as a filter. It has such a structure that it has a huge surface area, one mm3 provides up to 100150 m² of area. It is also used in commercially available filters. It can also partially reduce water hardness. However, it should be realized that its action is undesirable, especially in tanks with plants, due to its adsorption capacity. Activated carbon also removes nutrients from plants. Of course, its capabilities are exhaustible – after some time, the capacity becomes saturated, and it is necessary to either regenerate or replace the activated carbon. Regeneration is a chemical process, too costly for the aquarist, actually unnecessary. Activated carbon could be partially regenerated by boiling, but this is quite impractical. If we have powdered activated carbon available, we have won – its efficiency is practically the highest, and therefore we can use the smallest volume. The solution is to implement it into the filter, but also for example, to pour it into a stocking and place it in the tank. If some of it disperses, do not despair, activated carbon is harmless, it does not cloud the water.

In the water from the municipal water supply, various gaseous components are present, primarily intended for disinfection. They are essential for humans, but their impact on aquarium life is undesirable. One of these gases is chlorine, which is a well-known toxic gas, even for humans, but in low doses, it is harmless to humans and kills bacteria. Drinking water usually contains chlorine in the range of 0.10.2 mg/l, with a maximum of up to 0.5 mg/l. Chlorine is particularly harmful to fish gills. To rid water of chlorine, for example, letting it stand is suitable. There are products on the market based on sodium thiosulfate – Na2S2O3, which can remove chlorine from water. Allowing water to stand will rid it of chlorine in approximately one day. We just need to allow gases to escape – so no closed containers. Partially, immediate water filling will help, with the longest possible transport of water in the hose. A significant portion of chlorine will evaporate this way. There are also other gases in the water – complete degassing by standing occurs after four days. Various infusions are used for the swabs of some species, such as infusions of aquatic plants. These can literally prepare water – stabilize it, provide desired substances, such as trace elements, or possibly bind more harmful components. Wood is also used, oak, alder, willow. Brown coal is also suitable. Peat acts as a partial adsorbent. On the other hand, it adds humic acids and other organic substances to the water. Especially recently, ultraviolet light has been used for water treatment. Often also for its sterilization from pathogens. It can also be used in such a way – when the entire volume of water is affected – for example, in the case of an acute disease, but usually, the UV lamp is used as a filter, which effectively rids the water of various organism pathogens. Water treated with a sufficiently strong UV lamp, for example, does not become cloudy. Its use minimizes microbial infections. UV lamps are readily available on the market for aquarium supplies. As for a strong lamp – the wattage is determined by the volume of the tank. I do not recommend using the UV lamp continuously.

Light is an essential abiotic component that aquarium enthusiasts must consider in their homes. With its significant help, biological, biochemical, and physical processes take place in the aquarium. In the temperate zone where I am located, and probably many of you, the sunlight duration from fall to spring is insufficient. Therefore, providing artificial lighting is necessary. While sunlight is the primary source of energy, it’s not highly desirable in aquariums. In nature, sunlight doesn’t penetrate below the water surface, but in artificial tanks, it often hits the side walls, leading to algae growth on the glass and in the water. Additionally, water currents flow in valleys, which are often cut into the landscape, making it harder for sunlight to penetrate the water.

For these reasons, I recommend placing the aquarium in a darker part of the room and using artificial light during the day. It’s evident that some sunlight will still reach the entire setup. Fish probably wouldn’t enjoy swimming in constant darkness either. Aesthetic and functional aspects also play a role, especially when observing aquarium life. Fish can’t perceive light with their eyes as much as mammals or insects. They mainly sense light through their skin, covering their entire body surface. Excess light in the aquarium leads to green algae, while a lack of light results in brown algae. In the past, incandescent bulbs were used in breeding. However, this practice has been abandoned as they’re more suitable as a heat source than a light source. Compact fluorescent bulbs are a common alternative, but their efficiency is lower.

Fluorescent tubes are preferred for aquariums taller than 50 cm. High-Intensity Discharge (HQI) lamps are recommended for even better penetration in taller tanks. Regular maintenance and replacement of tubes are crucial for optimal performance. Precautions, such as using a ballast before the switch and starter, can extend the life of fluorescent tubes. Having a regular and objectively controllable light schedule is crucial for the aquarium’s well-being. Timers are better than relying on human intervention. Aquarium kits with plants should receive light for 12 – 14 hours a day for optimal growth. Providing light only in the evening is a misconception. The regularity of the light regime significantly affects the activity and overall behavior of fish. Some fish change their swimming patterns based on the light source’s direction. In conclusion, proper lighting is vital for a thriving aquarium, considering factors like light type, duration, and schedule.

Chemickú a fyzikálnu filtráciu akýchkoľvek filtrov dokáže zabezpečiť rašelina, hnedé uhlie, drvený vápenec, mramor, jelšové šišky, aktívne uhlie, ióntomeniče, piesok obohatený o soľ, prípadne jedlú sóda, zeolit.

Filtering the aquarium is practically essential. It ensures the even distribution of both positive and negative components in the tank water and the filtration of water through filter media — capturing impurities and possibly transforming them. Contemplating a thriving aquarium without a filter is only possible in tanks specifically focused on plants. The most commonly used filter media is called biomolitan, which is a material similar to foam but does not contain phenols. It is usually made based on polyurethane. Filtration can also be done through a compressor and a small, regular mechanical foam filter. Especially in small tanks and nano aquariums, filters often referred to as compact filters are commonly used. When such a filter is very restricted by a valve, it is commonly referred to as a drip filter in aquarium practice. This type of filter only minimally propels water, which, however, is sufficient for freshly hatched fry or developing eggs. Filters can be either external or internal. The difference is that the main part of an external filter is located outside the aquarium, which comes with many advantages. However, it is more expensive than an internal filter.

For ponds, special filters are used depending on how strong they should be, whether they will be submersible or push water upwards or downwards. Often, especially in the case of breeders or in stores specializing in aquariums, you can encounter a solution where a small pump is simply fitted with foam without any casing. It is essential to realize that the more important function of filtration occurs inside the foam — mechanical filtration is secondary. It is, of course, possible to combine them or adapt external and internal filters. Under normal circumstances, an internal filter acts as an oxidizer. Besides other substances, all nutrients are trapped on the filter media, and internal filters are excellent iron (Fe) consumers. The use of organic complexes that can bind iron, such as the decay of leaves (preferably old ones) or the decay of wood, prevents this. The internal filter needs to be cleaned not only for aesthetic but mainly physiological reasons. If we did not do so, decomposition processes in it would consume oxygen to such an extent that it would endanger the existence of fish in the aquarium. However, how often this needs to be done depends on the nature of our population, whether fish excrete a large amount of waste, how well plants can process them, how much we feed, but it can be said that sooner rather than later.

The filter’s performance is a serious matter for the aquarium enthusiast. There is probably no all-encompassing recipe to follow. Filters in the offerings of specialized stores usually have the recommended tank volume for which they are intended. For a population demanding in filter volume, I recommend getting a filter with a flow rate exceeding twice the tank volume. On the contrary, for a planted aquarium, I recommend a filter with a flow rate smaller than the tank volume. For a typical community aquarium, the optimum filter is probably capable of circulating about 1.5 times the tank volume. For planted tanks with proper feeding, I recommend a performance lower than 0.5 times the tank volume — a slow-flow filter. If you decide on an external filter, you must count on a higher investment. However, such a solution is generally better — for fish, for plants, for its maintenance. Under certain circumstances, its biological nature can be considered, so we may sometimes come across the term biological filter in this context. Everything depends on the solution and perspective. A significant part of the external filter is used outside the tank when it is used — space is required for it. Chemical and physical filtration of any filters can be provided by peat, brown coal, crushed limestone, marble, spruce cones, activated charcoal, ion exchangers, salt-enriched sand, or baking soda. Biological filtration can be provided by materials such as the aforementioned foam, ceramic material, lava, tuff, or a material with a large surface area. I prefer to use Powerhead heads or something similar and biomolitan, which I cut myself. In some tanks, I use a slow-flow filter. It happens occasionally that you need to get more air into the tank. I recommend connecting a hose to the part designated for it on the top of the filter and regulating it as needed at the end of the hose. The air then flows more efficiently — under higher pressure, and the introduced gas is composed of smaller particles. Excessive aeration is not suitable.
