Hainburg an der Donau

Hits: 6171

Hainburg an der Donau is a historic town in Lower Austria, located on the right bank of the Danube between Vienna and . It is the easternmost town in Austria (Wikipedia). Situated in the region known as Industrieviertel, it lies approximately 12 kilometers west of Bratislava and 43 kilometers east of Vienna. The surroundings of Hainburg are characterized by wooded hills and are part of the Donau-Auen National Park, which protects one of the last large river floodplains in Central Europe (donau.com). Hainburg boasts one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Austria, including city walls, towers, and three city gates. The most famous of these, Wienertor, is considered the largest medieval city gate in Europe (Wikipedia). Overlooking the town is a castle whose origins date back to the 11th century. The castle was built by order of Emperor Henry III and served as a strategic fortress for border defense (Wikipedia).

In addition to historical landmarks, Hainburg offers opportunities for hiking and cycling in the surrounding nature. A popular destination is Hill, which offers panoramic views of the town, the Danube, and the surrounding areas (icestovanie.sk).

The landscape near Hainburg, which I am particularly interested in, belongs to the unique European Donau-Auen National Park. It lies between the major cities of Bratislava and Vienna. Hainburg an der Donau is a small town located near Bratislava. Above the town are two hills: Braunsberg and Schlossberg. On Schlossberg stands Hainburg Castle.

The town, covering an area of 25 km², has a population of just under 6,000 (cestovanie.biz). Schlossberg Castle on the hill was built by Emperor Henry III in 1050 from older fortifications (cestovanie.biz). In 1108, the castle became the property of the Babenbergs (Wikipedia). In the second half of the 12th century, it was renovated under Richard the Lionheart, and in the 13th century by the Czech king Přemysl Otakar. In 1252, it became the property of the Habsburgs. Since 1629, the castle has been managed by the town but began to fall into disrepair (cestovanie.biz). In 1683, the town was plundered by the Turks, with 8,000 inhabitants killed (Wikipedia). During this time, Thomas Haydn, the father of composer Joseph Haydn, managed to escape. In 1789, Emperor Joseph II relocated a tobacco processing factory to the town, which became an important economic hub for decades (cestovanie.biz). The town also features one of the best-preserved medieval city gates in Europe—Wienertor (Vienna Gate) and Ungertor (Hungarian Gate) (cestovanie.biz, Wikipedia). Nearby are the ruins of Heimenburg Castle (Röthelstein), located less than 2 km from the town (cestovanie.biz), near the Danube, below Braunsberg. Medieval markets and castle festivities are held here every year in June and summer (Wikipedia).

Röthelstein is a castle ruin located on a 30-meter-high rocky outcrop above the Danube River, east of Hainburg an der Donau in Lower Austria. The castle was built in the 11th century, and the first written record dates to 1180. Its strategic location opposite Castle on the Slovak side of the Danube suggests it served as a border and watch castle, controlling trade ships and fishing on the river (hainburg.sk). In 1411, it was granted as a fiefdom to Wilhelm von Enzersdorf by Albert V, Duke of Austria (castles.nl). Over the centuries, the castle gradually lost importance and fell into ruin. Today, Röthelstein is a popular destination for tourists and history enthusiasts. The ruins offer an impressive view of the Danube River and the surrounding landscape. Access to the castle is possible on foot from Hainburg, with a path along the Danube passing through a tunnel carved into the rock (panorama.sk). The surroundings of the castle are part of the national park, enhancing its appeal for visitors (Oskar Mažgút). Interestingly, within a stretch of just over four kilometers, there are three castles: Hainburg Castle, Röthelstein, and Devín Castle. This area, known as the Devín Gate, was historically heavily fortified and served as a strategic point on the Danube River (panorama.sk).

Kežmarský štít is a prominent peak in the High Tatras, reaching an elevation of 2,556 meters above sea level. It is situated between and Huncovský štít (kamnahory.sk), about 16 km from Kežmarok, above Tatranské Matliare (Wikipedia). It is separated from the neighboring Lomnický štít by the Vidlové veže ridge. To the north lies the Dolina Zeleného plesa (Green Lake Valley) with the mountain chalet Chata pri Zelenom plese (kamnahory.sk). The massive southern face of Kežmarský štít, approximately 550 meters high, is popular among climbers due to the variety of climbing routes (pruzincan.blogspot.com). The first known ascent was made by Dávid Fröhlich and companions in June 1615. Another notable ascent occurred in 1654, described by Daniel Speer in his travelogue „Ungarischer oder Dacianischer Simplicissimus“. The first winter ascent was recorded on March 8, 1906, by German climbers Günter Dyhrenfurth and Alfred (kamnahory.sk). Touristic ascents to Kežmarský štít are allowed only with an authorized mountain guide. One of the most common routes leads from Skalnaté pleso through Huncovské sedlo. Alternatively, the summit can be reached by the ridge route from Veľká Svišťovka (tatryportal.sk).

The peak was named after the nearby historical territory of the town Kežmarok. Several hypotheses exist regarding the etymology of the name Kežmarok. One suggests the town’s name derives from „Kevesmark,“ named after the Hun leader Keve, who supposedly fell in battle somewhere in this vicinity. Other theories link the name to the East and West Gothic word „kasen“ (to enchant, fascinate). „Mark“ signifies forest or mountain pasture. In Latin, the name appears as „forum Caseorum“ (Caseoforum, Caseopolis), meaning „cheese marketplace,“ corresponding to the later German name of the town, „Käsmark“ (Wikipedia).

Kieżmarski Szczyt (słow. Kežmarský štít) jest znaczącym szczytem w Tatrach Wysokich, osiągającym wysokość 2556 metrów nad poziomem morza. Znajduje się pomiędzy Łomnicą (Lomnický štít) a Huncowskim Szczytem (Huncovský štít) (kamnahory.sk), około 16 km od miasta Kieżmark, nad Tatrzańskimi Matlarami (Wikipedia). Od sąsiedniej Łomnicy oddzielają go Widły (Vidlové veže). Kolejne znaczące wejście miało miejsce w 1654 roku, a opisał je Daniel Speer w swoim dzienniku podróży „Ungarischer oder Dacianischer Simplicissimus“.

Hits: 350

Teploty sú nízke počas celého roka (old.gymzv.sk). Hranica lesa siaha približne do 1500 m nad morom, nad ňou nasleduje pásmo kosodreviny a alpínskych tráv. Typické sú husté porasty kosodreviny (borovica horská) a medzi kvetenou vzácny plesnivec alpínsky či rôzne horce a lomikameň. V skalách a sutiach pod Gerlachom rastie napríklad endemický horec tatranský – Gentiana altaica subsp. tatrae a starček tatranský. Zo živočíchov žijú v tejto oblasti kamzík vrchovský tatranský a kolónie svišťov tatranských.

Až v roku 1838 lesník Ľudovít Greiner určil Gerlachovský štít ako najvyšší vrchol Tatier, čo bolo potvrdené rakúskou armádou v roku 1868 (it.wikipedia.org). Prvý doložený výstup na vrchol uskutočnil v roku 1834 Ján Still z obce Nová Lesná (en.wikipedia.org).

Obe trasy majú obťažnosť I podľa UIAA. Alternatívne, náročnejšie trasy zahŕňajú Tatarkovu próbu a Martinský hrebeň (Martinka), s obťažnosťou II–III podľa UIAA (de.wikipedia.org).

Gerlachovský štít (Gerlach Peak) is the highest peak of the High Tatras, Slovakia, and the entire Carpathian mountain range, reaching an elevation of 2,654.4 meters above sea level. Geographically, it is situated within the High Tatras massif in northeastern Slovakia, on the territory of the Tatra National Park (TANAP). The peak lies between two significant valleys: Batizovská dolina to the west and Velická dolina to the east. Gerlachovský štít features a distinctive pyramid shape, accentuated by a large cirque known as Gerlachovský kotol. Geologically, Gerlach is among the oldest massifs in the Tatras, predominantly composed of granite, shaped during the Alpine orogeny period. Its steep walls descend dramatically into adjacent valleys, where moraines and glacial lakes formed by retreating glaciers can still be seen today.

The climate at Gerlachovský štít is strictly alpine, characterized by low temperatures year-round. Even summer days can be cold, with peak afternoon temperatures around 5 °C in July. Snowfall and ice formation can occur at any time of year. Vegetation near the summit is sparse and rocky, limited primarily to lichens. However, diverse alpine communities flourish at lower altitudes, including dense growths of dwarf pine (mountain pine), alpine grasses, and endemic species such as the Tatra gentian (Gentiana altaica subsp. tatrae) and Tatra groundsel. Wildlife typical for this region includes the endemic Tatra chamois and colonies of alpine marmots. In lower forested regions, brown bears, lynxes, golden eagles, peregrine falcons, and alpine bird species are found. Gerlachovský štít lies at the heart of the Tatra National Park (TANAP), an area under the strictest level of environmental protection, designated as a no-intervention zone. Since 1993, this region has also been part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Tatry.

The mountain’s name derives from the nearby village of Gerlachov. Historically, it has held various names such as Kösselberg, Franz-Joseph-Spitze, Legionnaires‘ Peak, and Stalin’s Peak. Until the mid-19th century, Gerlachovský štít was not recognized as the highest peak in the Tatras; this title was mistakenly attributed to peaks such as Kriváň, , or Ľadový štít. In 1838, forester Ludwig Greiner definitively established Gerlachovský štít as the highest Tatra summit. The first confirmed ascent was made in 1834 by Ján Still from Nová Lesná.

Today, Gerlachovský štít does not have marked hiking trails and can only be ascended with a certified mountain guide. The most common ascent route starts from Sliezsky dom mountain hotel through Velická próba. More challenging climbing routes include Tatarkova próba and Ridge (Martinka), rated II–III by UIAA standards.

Śnieg i oblodzenie mogą wystąpić o każdej porze roku.

Jablonové is located approximately 30 kilometers from , is part of the region, and lies on the western foothills of the Little Carpathians, at an altitude of around 230 meters (Wikipedia). The village has approximately 1,400 inhabitants (obecjablonove.sk). The first written mention of Jablonové dates back to 1206 (e-obce.sk). It was referred to as Jablam Terra, and in 1231, it was recorded as Hablan Villa (sk.wikipedia.org). In the past, the village belonged to the counts of Svätý Jur and Pezinok, and later to the Bratislava Castle estate. From the 16th century, it was owned by the Serédy family and later by the Pálffy family. The village witnessed various historical events, including plundering by Ottoman troops in 1683 and burning by imperial troops in 1708 (e-obce.sk). The name of the village is likely related to the presence of apple trees (zahoracka.tv). The dominant landmark of the village is the Roman Catholic Church of St. Michael the Archangel, built in 1679 (facebook.com).

In the past, most of the inhabitants made a living from agriculture and handicrafts – due to the sandy and acidic soil, they cultivated crops with limited yields and also produced wooden tools and items, such as hand-carved washing plungers, wooden spoons, and painted furniture (zahoracka.tv). A glassworks existed near the village as early as the 17th century (zahoracka.tv). In the 19th century, manganese ore mining began near Jablonové – evidence of this activity can still be seen in the form of old mining heaps and tunnels in the areas of Skala, Lipníky, and Lipy Hill (.cz). The mining of manganese and pyrite was particularly active during World War I but ceased after 1918 (montanistika.sk). The village hosts traditional annual fair celebrations on the feast of St. Michael the Archangel. Jablonové also participates in the Apple Festival (Jablkové hodovanie), a seasonal autumn event focusing on apples and apple products (zahoracka.tv). Sports have a long tradition in Jablonové. Organized sports activities date back to 1953, when the Sokol physical education association was established. Today, the village is home to ŠK Jablonové, a football club with teams in various age categories (sk.wikipedia.org). Jablonové also has a historical Jewish cemetery, where several old tombstones with Hebrew inscriptions have been preserved (turistika.cz).

Korunovali tu 11 uhorských kráľov a 8 kráľovských manželiek (bratislava.sk). Po nedávnej rekonštrukcii korunu už naspäť nevrátili.

Dóm Svätého Martina (St. Martin’s Cathedral)

The three-nave Gothic church is one of the largest Gothic sacral buildings in Slovakia. It was built on the site of the original Romanesque church. Construction began at the beginning of the 14th century, and it was consecrated in 1452. The church tower was built simultaneously with the three aisles of the church, serving as part of the city fortification and defense. Its total height reaches 85 meters, and at the top, it is crowned with a gilded cushion measuring 2 x 2 meters, topped by a 1-meter high replica of the Hungarian royal crown weighing 300 kg. From 1563 to 1830, the cathedral witnessed the coronations of Hungarian kings. It saw the coronation of 11 Hungarian kings and 8 royal consorts (bratislava.sk). After a recent reconstruction, the crown has not been returned.

A háromhajós gótikus templom a legnagyobb gótikus szakrális épületek közé tartozik Szlovákiában.

It is the only preserved gate of the medieval city fortification. Originally a Gothic gate through which the long-distance road from Moravia entered the city, it is mentioned in 1411, but it was built in the first half of the 14th century. In the years 1511-13, it was raised by an octagonal superstructure, and in the years 1753-58, it was reconstructed into its current form, when a statue of St. Michael was placed on top of the 51-meter-high baroque tower. A protective barbican was added to the tower during the strengthening of the city fortification. Today, the tower houses an exhibition of weapons and city fortifications (bratislava.sk).

Sošky anjelov nad balkónom v centrálnej časti fasády držia dve písmená I – Iusticia = spravodlivosť a C – Clementia = Láskavosť – osobné heslo kardinála.

Primatial Palace

This neoclassical palace is one of the most representative palace buildings in Bratislava. It was built between 1778 and 1781 for the Archbishop Jozef Bathyány of Esztergom. The attic of the roof features allegorical statues and vases. At the top of the tympanum, the coat of arms of Jozef Bathyány and a cardinal’s hat weighing 150 kg are placed. In the tympanum, instead of the original fresco, there is now a mosaic. The angel statues above the balcony in the central part of the facade hold two letters, I – Iustitia (Justice), and C – Clementia (Clemency) – the personal motto of the cardinal. In the entrance hall of the palace, on the right side, there is a memorial plaque commemorating the so-called Bratislava (Pressburg) Peace, a document signed here on December 26, 1805, after the Battle of the Three Emperors near Slavkov. In the courtyard of the palace, there is a Renaissance fountain of Saint George, and in the corner of the courtyard is the entrance to the chapel of Saint Ladislaus. On the upper floor, there is the Mirror Hall, which witnessed the signing of the Bratislava Peace in 1805 between Napoleonic France and Habsburg Austria after the Battle of Slavkov. In 1848, King Ferdinand I signed a document abolishing serfdom in Hungary here. The representative spaces house the collections of the Bratislava City Gallery, including a unique collection of six tapestries from the 17th century depicting the tragic love of Hero and Leander, from the English royal weaving workshop in Mortlake. Since 1903, the palace has been owned by the city and currently serves as the residence of the mayor of the city (bratislava.sk). City council meetings take place in the Mirror Hall of the Primatial Palace.

Primatialpalais

A homlokzat központi részén lévő erkély felett lévő angyalszobrok két betűt tartanak, I – Iustitia (igazságosság) és C – Clementia (Jóság) – a bíboros személyes mottóját. 1848-ban I. Ferdinánd király itt írta alá a jobbágyság eltörléséről szóló dokumentumot Magyarországon. A reprezentatív terekben látható a Bratislava Galéria gyűjteménye, amelynek része a 17. századból származó hat faliszőnyeg egyedülálló gyűjteménye, amely Hero és Leander tragikus szerelmét ábrázolja, a Mortlake angol királyi szövőműhelyből. A palota 1903 óta a város tulajdona, jelenleg a város polgármesterének rezidenciája (bratislava.sk). A városházi tanács ülései a Prímási palota Tükrös termében zajlanak.

Fountain of St. George and the Dragon

According to legend, George was an officer in the Roman army. One day, he came to a town terrorized by a dragon. Initially, the dragon was satisfied with a daily supply of livestock, but later, it began demanding young girls. Desperate, the people selected victims by drawing lots. George arrived in the town when the lot fell on the king’s daughter. He killed the dragon with his spear and became a symbol of a knight triumphing over evil (bratislava.sk).

Először a sárkány a mindennapi marhahús-szállítmánnyal megelégedett, később azonban fiatal lányokat kezdett követelni. A kétségbeesett emberek a sorsolás útján választották az áldozatokat. György akkor érkezett a városba, amikor a király leánya esett ki a sorsolásból. Megölte a sárkányt lándzsájával, és a lovagot szimbólummá vált, aki legyőzi a gonoszt (bratislava.sk).

Rolandova fontána pred Starou radnicou – kamenná renesančná fontána s kruhovou nádržou ozdobenou maskarónmi a so stredovým pilierom na ktorom stojí postava stredovekého rytiera v brnení.

Old Town Hall

In the 14th century, there was a house with a tower on the site of today’s Old Town Hall, built by the mayor Jakub. The Old Town Hall was formed in the 15th century by merging several neighboring bourgeois houses on the Main Square, and over the centuries, it underwent several reconstructions. After the earthquake in 1599, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style, and the town hall tower was reconstructed in the Baroque style after a fire in the 18th century. In 1912, a rear wing was added in the Neo-Renaissance style from the courtyard side and in the Neo-Gothic style from Primaciálne Square. The town hall tower served a defensive purpose. When looking at the tower from the Main Square, you will find several interesting features – on the plinth, there is a plaque with the date February 1850, reminding of the water level during a flood when the Danube overflowed its banks. To the left of the Gothic window, at the level of the 1st floor, there is a walled cannonball reminding of the attacks by Napoleon’s armies in 1809. On the corner of the tower stands a statue of the Madonna from 1676. From the tower balcony, decisions of the parliament, royal decrees, and city council regulations were announced in the past. On the facade to the right of the Renaissance arcade, you can notice a fresco of an old man – a usurer from 1533. The City Museum is one of the oldest museums in Central Europe, founded in 1868. In the courtyard corner, there is an entrance to the exhibition of feudal justice and the history of the city. Concerts and theater performances take place on the Renaissance arcade courtyard in the summer (bratislava.sk).

Roland Fountain in front of the Old Town Hall – a stone Renaissance fountain with a circular basin adorned with mascarons and a central pillar on which stands the figure of a medieval knight in armor. The statue depicts the legendary guardian of municipal rights, Roland. In the lower part of the pillar, there is a smaller shell-shaped basin into which water sprays from the mouths of fish held by figurines – the so-called putti. Water was originally brought to the fountain through wooden pipes. The fountain was created for practical reasons at a time when there was a noticeable shortage of water in the city, as a direct response to a major fire that broke out during the coronation celebration of Maximilian and devastated a large part of the homes in the city. It is assumed that the author depicted the face of the then ruler on the statue of Roland (bratislava.sk).

Altes Rathaus

A városháza tornya védelmi célt szolgált.

A szobor Rolandot, a városi jogok őrzőjét ábrázolja. Az oszlop alsó részén egy kisebb kagylós medence található, amelybe víz spriccel a putti nevű halalakok szájából. A vizet eredetileg fa csöveken keresztül vezették a kúthoz.

Blue Church – Church of St. Elizabeth

The single-nave Secessionist Blue Church of St. Elizabeth with a cylindrical tower was built between 1910 and 1913 according to the design of Budapest architect Edmund Lechner. The church was constructed by the Pittel and Brausewetter company, which pioneered the use of reinforced concrete structures in the church’s architecture, supporting both the church vault and the organ loft. The church’s floor plan follows traditional styles, incorporating many elements borrowed from them. However, a completely new feature is the ornate plasterwork that imitates oriental ornamentation. The central element of the church’s front facade is a mosaic featuring the figure of St. Elizabeth holding roses in her cloak. Roses are also a fundamental element of the interior ornamentation. With this construction, Lechner created a new Hungarian national architectural style. The dedication of the Church of St. Elizabeth also reflected Hungarian national sentiment. St. Elizabeth was a native Hungarian saint from the royal Arpad dynasty (likely born in Bratislava Castle), and the church was intended to serve as a symbolic mausoleum for Empress Elizabeth (Sissi), the wife of Franz Joseph I (bratislava.sk).

A templom alaprajza a hagyományos stílusokat követi, sok elemet kölcsönöz tőlük. A rózsák a belső díszítés alapvető elemei is. A Szent Erzsébet-templom felszentelése is tükrözte a magyar nemzeti érzelmeket. Szent Erzsébet egy született magyar szent volt az Arpád-dinasztia királyi családjából (valószínűleg Pozsony várán született), és a templom szimbolikus mauzóleumként is szolgált Erzsébet császárné (Sissi), I. Ferenc József felesége számára (bratislava.sk).

Slovenské národné – historická budova

Pôvodne na mieste SND stálo tzv. Stavovské divadlo postavené v rokoch 1774 až 1776. Budova slúžila obecenstvu s viacerými neskoršími úpravami až do roku 1884, teda viac než sto rokov.

Slovak National Theatre – Historical Building

Originally, at the location of the Slovak National Theatre (SND), there stood the so-called Stavovské Theatre, built from 1774 to 1776. The building served the audience with several later modifications until 1884, more than a hundred years. After unfortunate fires in theater buildings in other cities, especially after the Vienna theater fire in 1881, the city of Prešporok (now Bratislava) decided to build a new theater building. It was constructed from 1885 to 1886. The operation in the new building opened on September 22, 1886, with a performance of the opera Bánk Bán by composer Ferenc Erkel, who himself conducted the first performance. Even after World War I, performances were held in the new building in both Hungarian and German. Gradually, actors from the Slovak National Theatre also took to its stage. Throughout the theater’s long history, it hosted the most significant personalities of the global opera scene, including F. Shalyapin, P. Mascagni, R. Strauss, G. Filip, M. Freni, P. Cappuccilli, R. Reznikov, J. Obrazcovová, and dancers like M. Fonteyn, A. Alonso, V. Vasiliev, and many others. Currently, it houses the opera and ballet. It nurtured many prominent figures in the opera scene, such as Peter Dvorský, J. Kundlák, J. Galla, E. Jenisová, E. Grúberová, L. Poppová, who performed on the most famous world stages (bratislava.sk).

The Ganymede Fountain in front of the Slovak National Theatre dates back to 1888. The eagle with the boy represents Zeus transformed into a bird of prey, carrying the beautiful boy Ganymede to Olympus, the abode of the gods. The perimeter of the stone basin of the fountain is adorned with turtles, frogs, and crayfish, supported by small figures of four children holding four types of Danube fish – carp, catfish, pikeperch, and pike. Water sprouts from the fish papules and falls into the basin (bratislava.sk).

Fokozatosan a Szlovák Nemzeti Színház társulatának színészei is megjelentek a színpadon. A színház hosszú története során a globális operaszínház legjelentősebb személyiségei léptek fel itt, köztük F. Salyapin, P. Mascagni, R. Strauss, G. Filip, M. Freni, P. Cappuccilli, R. Reznikov, J. Obrazcovová, és olyan táncosok, mint M. Fonteyn, A. Alonso, V. Vasiliev, és sokan mások. Jelenleg opera és balett működik itt. Sok jelentős operaszínházi személyiséget nevelt ki, például Peter Dvorský, J. Kundlák, J. Galla, E. Jenisová, E. Grúberová, L. Poppová, akik a világ legismertebb színpadain léptek fel (bratislava.sk).

A Ganymede-kút a Szlovák Nemzeti Színház előtt 1888-ból származik.

Pred tržnicou sa nachádza fontána Lev s erbom, ktorú zložili zo súčastí starších fontán a renovovali ju v roku 1937 (bratislava.sk).

Old Market Hall

Originally, at the location of the Old Market Hall, there was a bastion that belonged to the city fortifications since the 15th century. In 1910, a building in the eclectic style was constructed on this site – the first covered market in Bratislava, which served until 1960. After years of neglect, this technical monument was renovated, and by 1999, it was once again functioning as a market. In front of the market, there is a fountain with a lion and the city’s coat of arms, assembled from parts of older fountains and renovated in 1937 (bratislava.sk).
