Potom ich stačí pochytať a uzavrieť, zabezpečiť prísun potravy. Problém však nastane, ak ich chceme skŕmiť. Keď totiž otvoríme uzáver, mušky za normálnych okolností vyletia. Riešenie existuje – stačí ich omráčiť chladom, napr. z chladničky.

Drosophila flies are small flies that everyone has likely encountered, much like the common mosquito. Who wouldn’t recognize the tiny flies that appear near fruit, grapes, where vegetables ferment, sour, decompose? Drosophila melanogaster – the vinegar fly, fruit fly, is perhaps the organism most widely used and known by biologists, doctors worldwide. It’s willing to breed easily in captivity, with a rapid reproductive cycle. Genetic engineers have literally triumphed with this small fly, and research continues. Figuratively speaking, it’s like a test rabbit. In addition, there are Drosophila funebris and Drosophila hydei. Novák mentions the golden form with white eyes, the Turkish – Afghan form, the species Drosophila buzzatii, D. muelleri. They contain 51% protein, 36% fat, very small amounts of carbohydrates, 5% minerals in dry weight. Water content is about 61% (Novák). Drosophila serve as food not only for fish but also for birds and reptiles. The English-speaking world knows it as the fruit fly or vinegar fly.

Aquarists, and finally terrarists, prefer to use the so-called wingless form – vestigial – antlered – strap form. This cultivated form of the wing cannot fly, as its wings are significantly stunted. If we are breeding a colony, we must ensure that the wild form does not get mixed in, as nature’s genetic information shows strong dominance, and only one organism can teach” the entire population to fly. If we have no other option, we can also keep wild Drosophila. It is enough to leave some fruit exposed for some time, ideally mechanically disturbing it, and the flies will literally fly in during the summer. Then it’s enough to catch and contain them, providing a food source. However, a problem arises if we want to feed them. When we open the container, the flies will normally fly out. There is a solution – just stun them with cold, for example, from the refrigerator.

Používam mrazené droždie, z ktorého odrežem kúsok a vymiešam ho v studenej, alebo vlažnej vode. Zmes pripravujem v mikrovlnke. Všetko premiešam, dám do mikrovlnky na dvadsať minút. Po skončení premiešam. Výhody sú zjavné. Nič sa nepripáli a dvadsať minút sa môžem venovať niečomu inému. Varenú zmes nechám vychladnúť, minimálne dovtedy, kým neviem na ňom udržať bez ťažkostí ruku. Urýchliť chladenie môžeme postavením hrnca do studenej vody..

Túto pripravenú zmes potom nakladám to plastových pohárov, napr. do odrezaných PET fliaš.

Chov mušiek každopádne vyžaduje skúsenosti a starostlivosť.

Instructions for breeding Drosophila

In a pot, mix breadcrumbs, sugar, ground oats (preferably ground), semolina, or a bit of wheat bran. I recommend more oats and less flour. The flour can be smooth, semi-coarse, coarse, or semolina. Thoroughly mix these dry ingredients. Then add water, about 4 times the volume of the dry ingredients, and mix the mixture thoroughly. Heat the mixture while stirring frequently. It’s not necessary for the mixture to boil; it just needs to solidify. Once the mixture is sufficiently solid (literally not flowing), you can remove the pot from the heat. While cooking, you can prepare the yeast. I use frozen yeast, from which I cut off a piece and mix it in cold or lukewarm water. I prepare the mixture in the microwave. I mix everything, put it in the microwave for twenty minutes. After finishing, I stir again. The advantages are obvious. Nothing burns, and for twenty minutes, I can focus on something else. I let the cooked mixture cool, at least until I can touch it without difficulty. We can speed up the cooling process by placing the pot in cold water. When the porridge has sufficiently cooled, I pour in the prepared yeast with water and mix thoroughly. Ideally, let the yeast sit for 12 hours at rest. We can also use vinegar, which I added together with the yeast in a small amount. Vinegar is an attractant for flies, and yeast is an effective weapon against mold.

I then load this prepared mixture into plastic cups, for example, into cut PET bottles. A two-centimeter layer is enough. Then I tear off a piece of toilet paper, crumple it, and throw it on the porridge. Toilet paper serves to provide resting space for the flies but is not necessary. It must not completely cover the porridge. Then, from a established culture, I transfer the flies – I pour at least 30 individuals into a new culture. I cover it with a napkin or cloth and seal it with two rubber bands. Flies reproduce quickly; one female has 5070 offspring, and the reproductive cycle, under normal conditions, at room temperature, takes 12 – 16 days. That’s the case with D. melanogaster. D. hydei has a cycle of about 24 days. Flies survive for an average of three months, then despite the yeast, they still mold. Sometimes the substrate dries out; other times it gets too wet. If it’s dry, just add water. Sometimes the porridge is too liquid, then more toilet paper helps absorb moisture. Whether the porridge is too wet can also be seen by the fact that larvae climb up more. In extreme cases, the larvae can chew through the napkin. If the flies are hungry, they are smaller – this often happens when there is too little substrate or when it is dried out. In that case, sprinkle the culture with water or transfer the flies to a new or proper culture. Some terrarists feed the flies because they are too small for them.

If we see signs of mold in the flies within two weeks of starting, let’s first look for the error. Such mold is not okay; it’s better to throw away the flies or carefully transfer them to another culture. There is a possibility that mites could get into the flies, but that has never happened to me in all these years. If it does happen to you, feed the flies and throw away the culture. Use a healthy culture for breeding. Breeding flies requires experience and care. It’s interesting that every summer, when it gets very warm for a long time, meaning above 32°C, then two weeks later, individuals with large wings spontaneously appear in several cultures, about a quarter of the population. When it cools down, the flies regain their normal appearance. This happens to me every year, usually around July 20, when temperatures rise to forty degrees. I assume it’s an adaptation process when the flies are under great biological pressure due to an abiotic factor.

Násadu odgumičkujeme, servítok zahodíme, otočíme ju a buchnutím dlane vysypeme na hladinu. Aby sme zabránili prípadnému padnutiu servítka s kašou do nádrže, robíme to opatrne, a pomôcť si môžeme vsunutím jedného prstu cez otvor.

Feeding the Flies

Feeding flies is relatively straightforward. You just need access to the surface. Unfasten the culture, discard the tissue, flip it over, and tap it gently with your palm to empty it onto the surface. To prevent the tissue with the paste from falling into the tank, do this carefully, and you can use one finger to help through the hole. When feeding flies, pay attention to whether the fish are catching them. If it’s a new type of food for the fish, it may take some time for them to accept it. Of course, if you were keeping, for example, armored catfish, flies wouldn’t be the right choice for them. But, for example, tetras will be very excited about flies :-). Certainly, stress can also cause fish not to pay adequate attention to food.

If the flies have time, they will find” their way to the edges of the tank and try to get out of the water. It’s interesting that most of them, after being freed from the water, continuously march” along the edges of the side glass. Presumably, they can smell their friends,” so their attempt to escape is not great. If we want to reuse the flies we’ve poured for the fish, cover them again with a clean tissue. The decision is up to us, depending on whether there is still something left to hatch.

Poecila reticulata Peters, 1859 patrí do podčeľade Poecilinae, do čeľade Poecillidae, radu , triedy Actinopterigii. Synonymá:  Peters, 1859 De Filippi, 1861 Günther, 1866; Girardinus guppii Günther, 1866 Jordan et Gilbert, 1883 Jordan, 1887; Acanthophacelus reticulatus Eigenmann, 1907 Eigenmann, 1910 Boulenger, 1912 Boulenger, 1912 Langer, 1913 Regan, 1913 Milewski, 1920.

Existuje množstvo tvarových a farebných foriem P. reticulata. Pomer pohlaví odporúčam 3:1 a viac v prospech samičiek. , labyrintky – napr.  ryby – napr.  partipentazona.

Niektorí  pridávajú do akvárií, kde chovajú gupky soľ. Najmä tí, ktorí chovajú gupky bez dna a bez rastlín. Gupky majú relatívne dlhé chvosty a často preto viac trpia rôznymi chorobami.

Mrazené krmivo tohto typu stačí namočiť do akvária a párkrát s ním rozvíriť hladinu a ryby nakŕmite.

Takýmto požiadavkám vyhovie Artemia salina, a nálevník . Akonáhle sa dá rozlíšiť , mlaď rozdeľte podľa pohlavia. Samčekovia pohlavne dospievajú vo veku dvoch mesiacov, samičky o mesiac neskôr. Samičky so samcami dajte dokopy vtedy, ak chcete, aby sa spolu párili.

The Slovak name is živorodka dúhová. The name gupka dúhová is also used. It belongs to livebearers. It is a generally known species of aquarium fish. Probably everyone in Slovakia has encountered the national name gupky. Often their name is distorted to gubky, guby, and similar, even among experts – which only indicates their great popularity. Another common name for guppies is pávie očko. This beautiful name originates from the natural form of P. reticulata, which has a dark spot on the body, usually oriented towards the upper edge of the caudal fin.

The original distribution is in Venezuela, but today its range extends to the eastern Amazon, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, northern Brazil, and Guyana – the Orinoco River basin, and guppies can now be found in Australia, Cuba, Hawaii, Southeast Asia, eastern and southern Africa, South America up to the northern United States, Russia, southern Spain, Greece, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, among others. A more comprehensive list is provided by FishBase. The species P. reticulata has adapted to its environment and is increasingly showing its original natural form. When I compare wild guppies from Venezuela with those caught in Brazil, I see a clear dominance of the original genetic makeup. Wild nature wins once again. Guppies are found where the water is warm, usually in thermal springs. I know they are found in the area of Slovnaft, I’ve heard about several other occurrences, and I know they are in thermal ponds in Piešťany.

In nature, the male reaches 3.5 cm, the female 6 cm. They live an average of 8 – 12 months. P. reticulata is characterized by significant sexual dimorphism. The male is much more colorful, smaller in size, slimmer, and has a gonopodium. The gonopodium is the male reproductive organ and is a modification of the 3rd to 5th ray of the anal fin. The female is more oval, larger in adulthood, has a normal anal fin, and has a gravid spot on the abdominal part of the body. The basic color of both sexes is gray. Guppy is a very friendly fish, usually swimming in the middle and lower part of the aquarium. If you keep a large number of guppies in one tank, they group together in the entire water column. If you feed them with your hand in the aquarium, guppies curiously and fearlessly lick your fingers. Catching guppies with a net is also interesting because they are often caught too easily – if you want to catch just one, it’s easy to end up with 20 in the net. Simply catching a guppy in a net among a hundred others is a problem. The more there are, the more curious and fearless they become.

The breeding of guppies is widespread worldwide, perhaps because they are one of the most variable species of fish kept in freshwater aquariums, not only in terms of color but also in shape. There are many morphological and color forms of P. reticulata. Since guppies have always been and still are a challenge for aquarists, there have been significant changes not only in their appearance but also in the requirements for breeding. Keeping guppies was once trouble-free. You may have heard aquarists and acquaintances say that keeping guppies was never a problem and that it cannot be a problem today. The guppies available for purchase in pet stores or from breeders today can be described as delicate fish. Their demands differ significantly from their relatives in the past. Today’s guppies are heavily bred and have become less resilient. In the past, guppies were not delicate at all, but today it is different. It often happens to breeders that they buy some guppies, add them to their tank, and first the new ones perish, and later their old ones do too. If you want to keep guppies, it is ideal to find a path to a breeder who maintains a clean lineage. I recommend a sex ratio of 3:1 or more in favor of females. Males often do not give females peace, so it is suitable to keep more females than males. Guppies tolerate a wide range of water parameters. I consider the ideal breeding values to be a temperature of 22 – 27°C, 10 – 20°dGH, pH 7.5. They are capable, especially in adulthood, if they do not belong to delicate types, of tolerating high salinity. The profitability of guppies in Piešťany ponds is proof of this. Piešťany ponds are fed by water rich in sulfur and other minerals. People occasionally release various fish into the ponds, but only Poecilia sphenops and Poecilia reticulata survive. These are species that are resistant to this factor. Some breeders have managed to acclimate guppies gradually even to seawater. They keep guppies in seawater as feed. If you have ambitions to participate in competitions, it is advisable to keep guppies in aquariums with plants because they feel and look better in them. Therefore, breeding guppies requires more aquariums. Ideally, each form should have its own aquarium, especially for adult fish, young, and adolescent individuals. Other livebearers such as platies, swordtails, mollies, tetras, and Corydoras catfish are suitable for keeping with guppies in a community tank. Larger cichlid species, such as angelfish, labyrinth fish, such as bettas, and carp-like fish, such as Puntius partipentazona, are not suitable for them.

Some breeders add salt to the aquariums where they keep guppies, especially those who keep guppies without substrate and without plants. In any case, guppies feel good in salty water and better resist disease. The recommended dose of salt for them is two tablespoons per 40 liters of water. Guppies should be gradually accustomed to salt, and it should only be used if it does not bother other fish. Guppies have relatively long tails and often suffer from various diseases. And since guppies eat a lot and produce a lot of waste, water and bottom cleanliness must be maintained. One of my friends calls guppies and swordtails a combine” because of this feature. Guppies rest at the bottom at night, their tails touching the bottom, and they are at risk of infection. The bottom must not contain much detritus, effective filtration is a good prerequisite for your healthy fish. Guppies literally love fresh water, and if you change the water very often, they grow very quickly and are in excellent condition. Continuous water exchange is ideal.

Guppies are omnivorous. Suitable food includes threadfin, mosquito larvae, cyclops, moina, artemia, ideally live. Frozen food of this type is sufficient to soak in the aquarium and swirl a few times to feed the fish. If you want the female guppies to give birth well, provide them with larvae of the black mosquito, the one that sometimes makes human life so unpleasant – the Culex pipiens mosquito. Guppies are herbivorous, suitable food includes spirulina, blanched spinach, lettuce, etc. A suitable food for young growing guppies is infusoria. They readily accept, for example, non-flying fruit flies Drosophila melanogaster, and it is precisely insects that are most forgotten when feeding fish in general. Of course, microorganisms are suitable, as well as grindal worms, less so dry flake foods offered in pet stores.

Breeding guppies is simple; often it can happen in aquarists’ tanks against their will. Males, often even three at once, persistently chase the female, who usually ignores their activity at first. But when the female agrees, the male copulates using the gonopodium. The female is able to store sperm and give birth in the next 3 – 4 subsequent broods. Therefore, if you want to preserve the lineage – the shape and color of the parents, you need to prevent the mixing of genetic material. Pregnant females can be isolated in breeding traps, for example, those available in stores or those you can make from garden mesh baskets. It is enough to stitch the mesh and attach the basket to the aquarium. Or you can get inspired and make a breeding trap using a PET bottle and mesh. Of course, you can let the female give birth in a common tank and later catch the young. Sometimes guppies eat their offspring, but if you want offspring, it is good to have the aquarium well planted with plants. Guppies are capable of giving birth every month – the period lasts about 28 days. The average number of offspring is 40 individuals – ranging from 30 to 70, sometimes even more than 100 offspring. Sometimes it happens that the female only gives birth to a few young. Make sure that if you move the female before giving birth, you do not drastically change the water parameters, especially to avoid raising the temperature. Increased temperature could result in premature birth – insufficiently developed individuals or even dead ones. The female is exhausted after giving birth; it is common for her health to deteriorate during this time.

What is a much bigger problem is raising the young. As Ivan Vyslúžil says, A schoolchild can breed a guppy, but only a breeder can raise it.” Newborn guppy fry are relatively large fish fry – reaching about 1 cm. They initially grow slower, but after two weeks of good feeding, their growth accelerates. Just like with other fish, it is suitable to feed guppies diligently until they reach two centimeters in size. The best way to feed such young guppies is as often as possible and in small portions. Of course, live food that moves throughout the water column of the aquarium is ideal. These demands are met by the saltwater brine shrimp – Artemia salina, and infusoria – Paramecium caudatum. As soon as the gender can be distinguished, divide the fry by gender. Males reach sexual maturity at the age of two months, females one month later. Put females with males together only if you want them to mate. If it is not necessary, avoid sibling mating above all.

Guppies often suffer from diseases that we cannot diagnose – they often perish without apparent cause and very quickly. One of the serious diseases affecting these fish is fin rot caused by bacteria Pseudomonas, Aeromonas, and others. Another disease is mycobacteriosis, which is very difficult to treat. Ichthyophthiriasis – known among aquarists as white spot disease – is a less serious disease.

P. reticulata certainly deserves its significant place in aquaristics and holds it, as guppies are the reason for the European Championships, World Championships, and other international and national competitions and exhibitions. There is an international organization, IKGH (Internationale Kuratorium Guppy-Hochzucht), which brings together and coordinates individual organizations dealing with the breeding of P. reticulata. Competitions are held according to the developed IHS standard. Typically, competitions involve trios of males, but pairs are increasingly making their mark. Categories are determined by the shape of the caudal fin: triangle, circle, double sword, lower sword, upper sword, lyre, fan, flag, shovel, flame, needle, sherpa.

Poecilia reticulata Peters, 1859 gehört zur Unterfamilie Poecilinae, zur Familie Poecillidae, zur Ordnung Cyprinodontiformes und zur Klasse Actinopterigii. Synonyme: Poecilia reticulata Peters, 1859; Lebistes poecilioides De Filippi, 1861; Girardinus reticulatus Günther, 1866; Girardinus guppii Günther, 1866; Poecilioides reticulatus Jordan et Gilbert, 1883; Heterandria guppyi Jordan, 1887; Acanthophacelus reticulatus Eigenmann, 1907; Acanthophacelus guppii Eigenmann, 1910; Girardinus poeciloides Boulenger, 1912; Girardinus petersi Boulenger, 1912; Poecilia poeciloides Langer, 1913; Lebistes reticulatus Regan, 1913; Glaridichthys reticulatus Milewski, 1920.
