The species Cyphotilapia gibberosa was considered a form of Cyphotilapia frontosa. C. frontosa has one more transverse stripe on its body than C. gibberosa. Both species represent the wildest form of nature for me and are symbols of Africa. They can reach 30 – 50 cm. In the wild, they inhabit the deeper parts of Lake Tanganyika – around 40 meters below the surface. When capturing them, it is necessary to proceed gradually, otherwise, damage to the swim bladder may occur. According to Tanganyika, the capture process takes 4 – 5 days.
In the aquarium, it is sometimes interesting to observe how they take food from the bottom. Like a suction pump – they approach and suck water into themselves. Food gets into their papule by the pressure of water. They then expel the substrate. It is particularly fascinating when they consume “fleas”. They prefer larger food items, accepting fish fillets and enjoying pellets, as well as spaghetti. Fish up to seven centimeters are their prey. Frontosas are large fish, reaching over 10 cm in height. A larger aquarium is suitable, I would recommend 1,000 liters or more. In a shallow aquarium, their pectoral fins may suffer. In terms of difficulty, I would assess Cyphotilapia as moderately demanding. They are intelligent fish that can learn to take food from your hand and even enjoy being petted. However, they are curious and, given their strength, can splash you quite thoroughly. They are more aggressive when feeding. I lost one individual of Copadichromis borleyi kadangxo red fin in a curious way. During feeding, the borleyi always pushed aggressively towards the food. However, Cyphotilapia gibberosa was hungrier and, most importantly, stronger. Its mouth is truly grandiose, and since it ignored the consequences, it bit into the face of the female Copadichromis. There was a visible scar on one side, and on the other, an even larger plus, an eye that hung on only a few millimeters. The food battle was completed by Pseudotropheus socolofi albin, who swam to the affected fish, opened the papule, aimed, and with a strong jerk, gleefully devoured the eye. As if nothing else was the essence of its existence, just waiting for such an opportunity. – after this shameless act, it immediately but calmly swam away. Other fish don’t pay attention, they majestically swim, and nothing disturbs them under normal circumstances. But if some fish stands against them, they can effectively defend themselves. Some individuals are more temperamental, but frontosas are generally calm. Towards each other, their own kind, they are often very active. Reproduction is challenging, and I would consider tranquility as a key prerequisite.
Synonymá: Platax scalaris, Ptaxoides dumerilii, Pterophyllum dumerilii, Pterophyllum eimekei, Zeus scalaris. Existuje mnoho variet skalárov. Ako cenená forma sa považuje čierny skalár. Kedysi pôvodné skaláre boli úctyhodných rozmerov, dnes už takéto skaláre by sme hľadali len veľmi ťažko.
Existuje mnoho foriem skalárov, registrujem tieto: albino, amazonia, diamond, gold marbled veiltail, gold veltail, koi, leopard, marble, manacapuru, manacapuru red back.
Angelfish are perhaps the most well-known fish kept in aquariums alongside guppies and swordtails. They are South American cichlids from the Amazon basin and thrive in densely planted tanks. They are a less demanding species. Synonyms include Platax scalaris, Ptaxoides dumerilii, Pterophyllum dumerilii, Pterophyllum eimekei, Zeus scalaris. There are many varieties of angelfish, with the black angelfish considered a valuable form. Originally, angelfish were impressive in size, but nowadays finding such large angelfish is quite challenging. Today, a 10 cm high angelfish is considered good. Unfortunately, angelfish in aquarium breeding have undergone degradation due to inappropriate breeding conditions and practices. It’s common to find breeders, especially beginners, keeping angelfish in small tanks. Angelfish should be kept in at least a 150-liter tank, which is 50 cm high. It can be said that the more selectively bred they are, the more delicate they become. At the same time, they are easier to catch with a net. Wild-caught fish are more agile and not as easily caught. The more distant the varieties are from the wild form, the more delicate they become. Differentiating gender is challenging; during the breeding season, the female has a smaller nodule on her head. An angelfish is capable of laying 1000 eggs, but the fry are tiny and require strictly powdered live food, which can be a challenge. Angelfish need water pressure for breeding — a high water column. Still, if everything else is in good condition, they can breed even in 8‑liter tanks that are 20 cm high. However, this is an extreme breeding condition and should not be emulated. When angelfish have fry, they may care for them for a while if they are in egg form. Once the fry hatch, the angelfish almost always succumbs to instinct and consumes them — its own offspring. Therefore, it’s not recommended for adults to stay together during the breeding season. They lay eggs on a solid surface, which can be a plant leaf, such as an echinodorus leaf. Uneven pieces of cut PET bottles are also used.
Angelfish are peaceful fish, and it’s not advisable to keep overly curious fish that like to nip at the fins of these peaceful fish. An inappropriate combination is, for example, with tiger barbs (Capotea tetrazona). Angelfish, if given the opportunity, will eat smaller fish, such as neon tetras and guppies. If they live side by side for years, it’s possible they become accustomed to each other, and in that case, angelfish might leave these “small fish” alone. Keeping angelfish with discus is a separate chapter. Discus are very demanding fish and susceptible to many diseases. Angelfish are hardier in this regard. I recommend cohabitation only for experienced breeders. In principle, it’s not excluded, but angelfish must be adequately dewormed. A similar species to angelfish, which is challenging to keep alive but reaches sizes that P. scalare once did, is Pterophyllum altum. There are many forms of angelfish; I observe these: albino, amazonia, diamond, gold marbled veiltail, gold veiltail, koi, leopard, marble, manacapuru, manacapuru red back.
Existem muitas formas de Acarás; eu observo estas: albino, amazonia, diamond, gold marbled veiltail, gold veiltail, koi, leopard, marble, manacapuru, manacapuru red back.
Nádherný druh jazera Malawi. Registrujem tieto formy: Chilumba (Peter Kaclík). Aulonocara stuartgranti Meyer & Riehl, 1985 dosahuje 11 cm.
Aulonocara stuartgranti, also known as the “Peacock Cichlid,” is a stunning species from Lake Malawi. I observe these varieties: Chilumba (Peter Kaclík). Aulonocara stuartgranti Meyer & Riehl, 1985 reaches a size of 11 cm. The optimal conditions for them include a pH range of 7.5 – 8.2, temperature between 22 – 26°C, and water hardness of 12 – 20 dH (fishprofiles.com). The males exhibit particularly striking and colorful patterns. In their natural habitat around the rocky reefs of Lake Malawi, they are generally more docile compared to some other cichlids.
Endemit jazera Tanganika. Sú to jemné, krásne ryby. Mne evokujú myšlienku na motýle. Cyprichromis leptosoma (Boulenger, 1898) (Fish Base) dosahujú 11 cm, žijú vo vode s pH 7.8 – 8.8, teplotou 23 – 26 °C, s tvrdosťou 8 – 20 dH (fishprofiles.com). Synonymá: Paratilapia leptosoma, Limnochromis leptosoma (Leonard). Žijú vo vodách so skalnatým dnom medzi Mpulungu a Kigoma, v obrovských hejnách. Existuje množstvo foriem: Mpulungu, Ikola, Karilani, Kigoma, Utinta, Jumbo Kitumba, Jumbo Chaitika, Jumbo Moliro, Kekese.
Endemic to Lake Tanganyika, Cyprichromis leptosoma is a delicate and beautiful fish that evokes thoughts of butterflies. Cyprichromis leptosoma (Boulenger, 1898) (Fish Base) reaches a length of 11 cm and inhabits waters with a pH of 7.8 – 8.8, a temperature range of 23 – 26 °C, and a hardness of 8 – 20 dH (fishprofiles.com). Synonyms include Paratilapia leptosoma and Limnochromis leptosoma (Leonard). These fish are found in rocky-bottomed waters between Mpulungu and Kigoma, forming massive schools, with the core being comprised of females (akvarista.cz). Leptosomas are characterized by their slender bodies and elongated fins. They are typical inhabitants of the pelagic zones of the lake, meaning they spend most of their time in open water far from the shore. This behavior also influences their conduct in aquariums, where they appreciate a larger swimming area. These fish tend to live in groups, displaying an interesting hierarchy within their school. Therefore, it is advisable to keep them in sufficiently large groups to minimize aggression among individuals. They are sensitive to stress. There are various forms, including Mpulungu, Ikola, Karilani, Kigoma, Utinta, Jumbo Kitumba, Jumbo Chaitika, Jumbo Moliro, and Kekese.
