Stari Grad – mesto zo Zoznamu Unesco

Hits: 3703

The historical name of the town is Pharos (Faros). It was colonized by the Greeks (croatia.hr). It is an interesting and beautiful little town. The Stari Grad Plain, located near the town, is on the UNESCO List. The local vineyard and olive grove plantations have remained practically unchanged” since the first colonization by the ancient Greeks (croatia.hr). Stari Grad is characterized by narrow streets, and of course, the harbor, where history literally breathes in many places.

It is a popular resort on the northwest of Hvar. The town has about 1900 inhabitants. It is renowned for lavender cultivation. The main industries are tourism and, alongside that, winemaking. Vineyards stretch all the way to Jelsa and Vrboska. An exceptional historical landmark is the preservation of the so-called Greek ager – the division of agricultural land by immigrants after the Greek colonization of the island 2500 years ago (chorvatsko.cz).

Hits: 6548

Liečivé účinky termálnej minerálnej vody a sírneho bahna boli prvýkrát opísané lekármi v 14. storočí (danubiushotels.sk).

The healing effects of thermal mineral water and sulfur mud were first described by physicians in the 14th century (danubiushotels.sk). It is even said that the healing effects of the springs were discovered by Roman soldiers. They rested on a muddy meadow near the Váh River after a long and exhausting journey. After this rest, they reportedly continued their journey remarkably refreshed (piestany-spa.info). The history of the town of Piešťany is closely tied to the development of balneology in the 16th century. The first detailed description of the springs comes from the prefect of Šariš Castle and royal councilor Juraj Werhner in 1545. Later descriptions are from the physician of the Austrian emperors Johann Crato de Crafheim in 1571, the personal physician of Pope Sixtus V. Andrea Bacciusa Elpidianusa in 1588, and the German traveler Martin Zeiller in 1632. The most famous description of the baths comes from Adam Trajan in the poem Saluberrimae Pistinienses Thermae” from 1642. In 1772, the significant balneologist, Professor Heinrich J. von Cranz, appeared in Piešťany. Only after his visit did they construct the first permanent bathhouse; until then, they used pits dug in the ground.

Začiatkom 19. storočia dal Jozef Erdödy vybudovať v klasicistickom štýle prvé murované kúpeľné budovy, ktoré boli dobudovávané a prestavované v priebehu celého 19. storočia. (Wikipédia). Pred Winterovcami mali v prenájme kúpele viedenský podnikateľ Schmidt a hlohovský inžinier Skarnitzel. V rokoch 18891940 boli Alexander, Imrich a Ľudovít Winter vedúci pracovníci firmy Alexander Winter a synovia, podnik generálneho prenájmu kúpeľov”.

Beginning of the 19th century, Jozef Erdödy had the first brick bathhouses built in the neoclassical style, which were expanded and renovated throughout the entire 19th century (Wikipedia). Before the Winters, Vienna entrepreneur Schmidt and Hlohovec engineer Skarnitzel leased the baths. They neglected the baths, and their condition was catastrophic. From 1889 to 1940, Alexander, Imrich, and Ľudovít Winter were the leading figures in the company Alexander Winter and Sons, a business for the general lease of baths.” Shortly before the end of the war, on September 18, 1918, Winter signed an agreement with Count Viliam Erdödy to extend the lease of the baths for 90 years (Urbánek T., 2008, Piešťanský týždeň, Nr. 38, p. 4). The inspiration for Alexander Winter’s entrepreneurial success also came from the government of Hungary, which, in 1867, had won a certain independence from the Habsburgs. The government called on citizens to undertake independently from their own strength and resources.” Alexander Winter was enthusiastic about this call and decided to lease the Piešťany baths. At that time, only about 1,000 patients visited Piešťany in the summer, and most of them did not stay at the Kurhotel, which had 30 rooms. He built the Workers’ Hospital, where even the less fortunate could receive treatment if the employer or the municipality was willing to bear the costs. This was followed by a major construction boom. Protective embankments were built against floods, new spa areas, promenades, parks, cafes, hotels, a swimming pool, a golf course, a museum, roads were paved, and sewage and water supply systems were built. For example, the Art Nouveau-style Thermia Palace hotel (Eva Čobejová).

In November 1938, Ľudovít Winter learned that Count Viliam Erdödy was a supporter of Hitler and wanted to sell the baths to a certain German consortium. In March 1939, he proposed to President Tiso that they hand over the baths to a participating company, requesting only to leave modest employment for the two Winters. Tiso sensed danger and submitted a proposal to the government to take over the baths. The entire property was placed under forced administration based on a government resolution. On October 20, 1940, the baths were expropriated from the Erdödys and became state property (Urbánek T., 2008, Piešťanský týždeň, No. 38, p. 5). Thermal springs are in the Považský Inovec fault zone, at a depth of 2,000 meters. Water accumulates in the Burgidalian (Miocene) sediments of the Danube Basin. The springs are sulfur-hydrocarbonate, calcium-magnesium, and sulfur. Their temperature is 67 – 69 °C, with a content of around 1.5 g/l of mineral substances and a gas content, especially hydrogen sulfide. The capacity of captured wells is more than 3 million liters of water per day (Cambel, B, 1962). The long-term reaction of thermal water with soft rocks and specific bacterial microflora forms mud, thanks to which the baths owe their good reputation (interspa.sk). Mud conducts heat well, cools four times slower than water, and has high viscosity (danubiushotels.sk). Most of the springs that emerge on the Spa Island are captured at depths of 50 – 60 meters, eliminating the possibility of contamination with surface water, ensuring constant temperature (slovenske.info). Thanks to this, in Piešťany, balneotherapy, hydrotherapy, and rehabilitation are successfully developed. It treats a variety of post-traumatic conditions, diseases of the musculoskeletal system, etc.

Podľa povesti práve páv odhalil liečebné účinky termálnych vôd a bahna (Jana Beňačková, Kornel Duffek, Ladisla Ďuračka, Dušan Knap, Stanislav Kratochvíl, 2007: Pávy opäť na Kúpeľnom ostrove, Revue Piešťany Nr. 1, p. 1213). Vo februári 1917 tu rokovali o vedení vojny traja cisári, Wilhelm II Hohenzollern, rakúsky cisár Karol I. Habsburg a bulharský cár Ferdinand I. Koburg. (Wikipédia). Odporúčam si ju pozrieť z oboch strán.

Peafowls are part of the spa experience in Piešťany. After a break of over 30 years, the Piešťany spas revived the tradition of peafowl breeding on Spa Island, which was started by the Winters. According to legend, it was a peafowl that revealed the healing effects of thermal waters and mud (Jana Beňačková, Kornel Duffek, Ladisla Ďuračka, Dušan Knap, Stanislav Kratochvíl, 2007: Peafowls back on Spa Island, Revue Piešťany No. 1, p. 12 – 13). Edo Kľubica Sekera published a story in the Saluberrimae Pistinienses Thermae magazine, No. 2 – 3 in 1948, where a chilly peafowl noticed that its stay in the mud by the river was beneficial. Initially, they were behind the lakes, but today they are in a relatively large area just behind the dam, behind the Kolonádny Bridge on the left side. In other words, in front of the EVA swimming pool and near the lakes. In addition to the crowned peafowl Pavo cristatus, other birds are also found here: golden pheasant – Chrysolophus pictus, silver pheasant – Gennaeus nycthemerus, royal pheasant – Syrmaticus reevesii, laughing dove – Streptopelia roseogrisea (Information board) Thermia Palace – is a five-star hotel today, incidentally, it was the first to meet such criteria. It is a beautiful building behind the Kolonádny Bridge, whose construction was credited to Ľudovít Winter in 1912 (Urbánek T., 2008, Piešťanský týždeň, No. 38, p. 4). In February 1917, three emperors, Wilhelm II Hohenzollern, Austrian Emperor Karl I, and Bulgarian Tsar Ferdinand I, negotiated the conduct of the war here (Wikipedia). I recommend looking at it from both sides.

Prebieha tu vodoliečba, magnetoterapia, fitnes a mnohé iné (Jana Beňačková, Tomáš Hudcovič, 2007: Komfort a luxus v Kúpeľnom dome Irma, Revue Piešťany, No. 2, p. 56). – 13. septembra 2008.

Irma is a spa building where many procedures take place. It is adjacent to Thermia and connected by a corridor. The Irma Spa bears the name of Countess Erdődy. In Irma, there is a mud pool directly built on the thermal spring, which is a European unique feature. Since 1912, Swedish gymnastics, electrotherapy, four-cell baths, and an inhalatorium have been offered here. Today, it also features a mirror room, mud pool, traction pool, rehabilitation section, tub department, dry carbon bath, sauna, dry traction, hydrotherapy, magnetotherapy, fitness, and many more (Jana Beňačková, Tomáš Hudcovič, 2007: Comfort and Luxury in the Irma Spa House, Revue Piešťany, No. 2, p. 5 – 6). Pro Patria is a balneotherapeutic and accommodation facility today, built in 1916 (Urbánek T., 2008, Piešťanský týždeň, No. 38, p. 4). I was rehabilitated there when I was little. The Presidents’ Fountain in front of Irma was named on the occasion of the meeting of the V4 countries’ presidents on September 12 – 132008.

Skočil mu do voza a prevrátil ho.

Smolenice majú dve časti: Smolenice a Smolenickú Novú Ves (pôvodne Neštich).

Smolenice is a village situated at the foothills of the Small Carpathians. The first mention of Smolenice, then called Solmus, dates back to the year 1256. At that time, it belonged to the Pezinok-Saint George Counts. By the end of the 14th century, it was owned by Stibor of Stiborice, and later again by the Pezinok-Saint George Counts. In the 16th century, it belonged to the Orság family, and after the 17th century, to the Pálfy family. Within the village’s territory lies Smolenice Castle, surrounded by a beautiful park. A significant historical site is Molpír, a Hallstatt hillfort, a princely fortification dating back to the older Iron Age (7 – 6th century BC), featuring massive stone fortifications with gates and towers (Information Board). The hillfort covered an area of 12 – 14 hectares, with three courtyards protected by ramparts. The fortifications consisted of loose stones, reinforced embankments, and wooden structures. Foundations of towers, a round bastion, and residential wooden huts were discovered on-site. The inhabitants engaged in tool-making, knife production, weapon crafting, bronze casting, and the production of stone grinders. The most important was likely the production of threads and fabrics, and at its peak, around 800 people lived here (Wikipedia.sk). Molpír is considered a former political and economic center of the wider region and disappeared in the 4th century BC (Information Board).

Near the hillfort is a Slavic burial site from the pre-Great Moravian and Great Moravian periods, which disturbed a barrow from the Middle Bronze Age. In the vicinity of Smolenice, a relatively large number of Neolithic artifacts were found, such as axe hammers, stone axes, grinding stones, and ceramics. From the period around 1700 – 1500 BC, remains of the Middle Danubian barrow culture with its distinctive grooved pottery were discovered. Smolenice is associated with Smolenice Karst, which includes a nature trail of the same name. The National Nature Reserve Driny Cave, the only publicly accessible cave in the Small Carpathians, is part of it. Another national nature reserve, Dolina Hlboče, is located above the village. Záruby (767 m) is the highest peak in the Small Carpathians, overlooking Smolenice, along with other peaks like Veterlín (Source: Information Board).

According to local legend, the site of the current village was once a forest with a road passing through it. Once, a resin worker (smoliar) was traveling along the road with a wagon full of resin. Nobles were hunting in the forest, chasing a deer that, startled, ran onto the road right into the resin worker! It jumped into his wagon and overturned it. The resin spilled on the ground. The terrified resin worker exclaimed, Smole nic!” which means Nothing but resin!” And so, this place began to be called Smolenice (panorama.sk).

Smolenice consists of two parts: Smolenice and Smolenická Nová Ves (originally Neštich). Count Jozef Pálfy built a chemical plant for wood processing in the valley below Majdán near the village of Horné Orešany between 1880 and 1883. A forest horse railway began to be built, later an industrial railway from the factory to the station. The entire network was dismantled after 1960. In 1968, the history of another chemical plant producing paints, Chemolak, began. Notable personalities from Smolenice include parachute inventor Štefan Banič and regional historian Štefan Jastrabík (Wikipedia.sk).
