V prí­ro­de žijú v tzv. čier­nej vode pochá­dza­jú­cej z les­ných oblas­tí, plnej humí­no­vých kyse­lín, výlu­hov z dre­va a pôdy povo­dia Rio Neg­ro v Bra­zí­lii. Vyža­du­jú pre odchov veľ­mi níz­ky obsah hyd­ro­ge­nuh­li­či­ta­nov, váp­ni­ka a hor­čí­ka – vodu veľ­mi mäk­kú, ale pomer­ne boha­tú na ióny. S tet­rou neóno­vou – Para­che­i­ro­don inne­si sa prá­ve neón­ky čas­to mýlia, v sku­toč­nos­ti sa tie­to dva dru­hy v prí­ro­de nestre­tá­va­jú, žijú v dosť roz­diel­nych pod­mien­kach. Neón­ky zís­ka­li svo­je pome­no­va­nie pod­ľa mod­ro­ze­le­né­ho pásu tiah­nu­ce­ho sa pozdĺž celé­ho tela.
