Čelaď Ampullariidae – Apple snails – jablkové slimáky sú niekedy nazývané aj mystery snails – záhadné slimáky (Apple snail). Druh Pomacea bridgesi dorastá bežne do 67 cm, maximum je 15 cm. Pochádza z Južnej Ameriky – Rio Grande, Reyes River at Beni, povodie Amazonu (Apple snail).

The family Ampullariidae, commonly known as Apple snails, are sometimes also referred to as mystery snails. The species Pomacea bridgesi typically grows to a length of 6 – 7 cm, with a maximum size of 15 cm. It originates from South America, specifically the Rio Grande, Reyes River at Beni, and the Amazon River basin. Synonymously, it is also called Ampullarius australis. P. bridgesii belongs to the Ampullariidae family, characterized by the need for both a female and a male for reproduction. This species does not exhibit hermaphroditism. While other species belong to this group, only the P. bridgesii genus is suitable for planted aquariums because it is the only one that does not consume plants. The care of these snails, ampullaries, does not require any special demands, but the same cannot be said about their breeding. Nevertheless, their breeding does not impose significant requirements either. It is sufficient for the ampullaria to have access to a dry area, typically creating a cocoon on the tank’s cover glass or a protruding leaf.

The calcium content in the water affects their breeding, and this can be a concern in soft water, where providing real cuttlebone is necessary. Snails extract calcium from the cuttlebone, which is crucial for their development. Some aquarium enthusiasts, especially those with planted tanks, use snails to soften water. Snails naturally absorb calcium from the water and can bind a considerable amount into their shells. Conversely, a lack of calcium can lead to their shells weakening and shrinking.
