Marchegg – mesto bocianov – Storchenstadt. Ďalšou atrakciou sú Viedenská brána – Wiener Tor a Uhorská brána – Ungartor (marchegg.at).
Marchegg – the town of storks – Storchenstadt. It is located near the borders with Slovakia – essentially next to the Devín Lake. It is known for a high number of storks from March to August. Situated at an altitude of 141 m, it has around 3650 inhabitants. It was founded in 1268 by King Přemysl Otakar. An interesting feature is the water castle, built in the 13th century and used as a hunting lodge (marchegg.at). In 1621, the water castle was acquired by Paul IV. Pálfi, who owned estates in the neighboring Malacky, Plavecký Castle, Devín, and Bojnice. It resembles the Malacky Manor, and its descendants cooperated in its modifications. Today, its interiors host an exhibition about Přemysl Otakar II. as well as an exhibition dedicated to the Pálfy family (Krno). The area includes a beautiful park arrangement. Another attraction is the Viennese Gate – Wiener Tor and the Hungarian Gate – Ungartor (marchegg.at). Today, the castle serves as a regional museum (tourist-channel.sk). Next to the village of Marchegg, there are nature reserves of Moravian floodplain forests and Lake Kleiner Breitensee, the largest colony of storks in Central Europe with nests on trees (tourist-channel.sk). There are 50 pairs of white storks nesting here – the stork principality (Krno). The WWF March Auen – Moravské luhy reserve was established in 1970. It is part of the Ramsar site Morava Floodplain. Wetlands with floodplain forests are a rare ecosystem, comparable in their vulnerability to tropical rainforests (teraz.sk).
