Zell am See sa nachádza neďaleko Salzburgu. Označuje sa takto jazero, celá oblasť, okres a kúpeľné mesto. Nachádza sa tu množstvo perfektne udržiavaných zjazdoviek, rekreačné strediská, turistické a cykloturistické cesty, športové haly apod. Celému okresu Zell am See sa hovorí aj Pinzgau (zellamsee.cz). Cez Zell am See vedie Tauernská cyklotrasa, ktorá je 325 km dlhá z mesta Krimml do Salzburgu. Vedie po asfaltových cestách s minimálnym prevýšením. Neďaleko sa nachádza Kaprun a jeho tiesňava Siegmung Thun Klamm, ľadovec Kitzsteinhorn, vrch Hundstein, vyhliadka Kaiser Franz Josef Höhe ktorý je vo výške 2369 metrov nad morom, s ktorej vidno najväčší rakúsky ľadovec Pasterze a najvyšší vrch Grossglockner. V širšom okolí od jazera sú Krimmlské vodopády, voda z nich padá z výšky takmer 400 metrov v troch kaskádach. Patria medzi najväčšie v Európe (Milan Zajíc). Pôvodná a najstaršia lanovka Schmittenhöhebahn bola postavená v roku 1927 ako prvá v Salzbursku a piata v Rakúsku. V Kaprune vzdialenom 7 km od Zell am See sa nachádza druhý najväčší kúpeľný komplex v Rakúsku, s množstvom bazénov, a širokou ponukou vodného sveta (Jan Hocek).
