Poecilia velifera (Regan, 1914) is a beautiful species of livebearer from the genus Poecilia. There are even standards developed for them, and competitions are held within the Molly category. Other mollies in this category include Poecilia sphenops and Poecilia latipinna. Latipins, in particular, bear a strong resemblance to veliferas. The species has various forms: assorted, calico, gold leopard, green, red gold, and silver. It reaches a size of 15 cm, thrives in pH 8, dH 13 – 19, at temperatures of 25 – 28°C, and is native to Central America – specifically Mexico (Fish Base). Its lifespan ranges from 3 to 5 years (rybicky.net). Poecilia velifera is also known as the Marigold swordtail” or Velvet swordtail.” The male Poecilia velifera features a very long and curved tail, giving it a sword-like appearance. Suitable for community tanks, its care is relatively undemanding, making it suitable for less experienced aquarists.
