Vodné rastliny

Hits: 51406

Pravdepodobne by najmä bránila difúzii plynov.

Aquatic plants differ from terrestrial plants; they are adapted to the underwater environment. The leaves of aquatic plants have stomata on both the upper and lower surfaces – they breathe through both sides,” unlike terrestrial plants. The surface of terrestrial plants is covered with a cuticle, which is almost absent in almost all species of aquatic plants. It would likely hinder gas diffusion. Floating plants usually do not root, even those that live on the water surface. The roots are similar in shape to those of terrestrial species. The consequences cannot always be taken as a barrier, as there are aquatic plants that grow above the water surface in natural conditions or grow in marshes with low water levels but high humidity. In aquariums, the terms submerged form and emerged form of plants are common. The submerged form grows underwater, while the emerged form grows above the water. The individual forms often differ in shape and color. In practice, vegetative propagation of plants is widely used – by cuttings, runners, shoots, etc. The submerged form can grow into the emerged form in an aquarium – often seen in plants like Echinodorus. If the tank is too low for the plant, it often finds its way out. However, aquatic plants also bloom, often very similar to terrestrial species. The flower sometimes forms below the water surface, more often above it. Sexual reproduction of plants is not excluded but is problematic and is rather a task for a specialist. Aquatic plants are mostly green, sometimes red, purple, or reddish-brown. There are numerous species of aquatic plants.

Light is an important factor for plants – there are shade-tolerant species, for example, Microsorium, Vesicularia, and light-loving species, for example, Salvinia, Pistia. Differences also exist in terms of the optimal temperature. There are species that clearly grow differently with relatively small temperature differences. Leaves are denser together in cooler water, and the color of the leaves is darker, etc. Most aquatic aquarium plants have a relatively narrow temperature range in which they live. Some aquarium species can tolerate very low temperatures, similar to the cold-water conditions of our temperate zone. Water flow also affects plants. Some species are adapted to stagnant water, while others prefer fast-flowing streams. In the aquarium, the main sources of water flow are the filter and aeration. Water flow significantly influences decoration, and the slope and relief of the bottom also play a role. A flat bottom creates stronger currents. Medications used in aquaristics have a very negative effect on plants, unfortunately, their negative impact is long-lasting. If possible, transplant at least some of the plants to another tank during treatment. This is also a reason to set up a separate quarantine tank. After using medications, activated carbon can be used. Aquarium enthusiasts often transplant plants, usually during vegetative propagation.

I don’t recommend transplanting larger mother plants frequently. Plants can also be a source of food for fish, snails, etc., which is usually undesirable. Young suction snails are often used to eliminate algae. If they are small, they do their job diligently, but larger ones tend to go after the plants instead. Snails can also consume algae, especially if they lack other food, but they can also target plants. The most common apple snails do not eat plants. In the aquarium, we use artificial light, and the length of illumination should be similar to their natural habitat. It’s equally important to maintain regularity; a 12 – 14 hour interval is necessary. It depends on the placement, whether we are in a dark room, the length of daylight, and how much sunlight is available. Natural light has a different quality than artificial light; it can only be adapted to. Species are adapted to different environments. Water plants, just like their terrestrial relatives, change their metabolism depending on the alternation of day and night. It’s their own natural biorhythm. During the day, plants absorb light, CO2, produce organic matter, and as a by-product, produce oxygen. This process is called photosynthesis.

V noci naopak rastliny kyslík prijímajú – rastliny dýchajú a vylučujú do vody CO2.

At night, on the other hand, plants absorb oxygen – plants respire and release CO2 into the water. However, plants also respire during the day, but CO2 uptake prevails. Due to the respiration of plants at night – the production of CO2, the pH in the aquarium increases. The concentration of CO2 rises with water hardness, water temperature, and decreases with pH. One of the basic functions of plants is the mineralization of matter. Detritus is a layer of sediment composed of waste, fish excrement, snails, etc., which needs to be broken down. This process is carried out by microorganisms, especially bacteria. Plants play an important role in this process because they can also break down some substances, but in any case, already mineralized substances are a source of nutrition for them. Some roots, like leaves (green parts of plants), produce oxygen, but under normal conditions, each plant produces a small amount of oxygen that contributes to the aerobic reduction of matter around them. Some species are particularly good at removing nutrients from the water, which are desired by aquarists, e.g., Riccia fluitans is an ideal biological agent for reducing nitrate levels. Similarly, Ceratophyllum demersum possesses similar abilities. Likewise, Anacharis densa effectively removes calcium from the water. Plants bind these substances into their tissues and incorporate them into their physiological processes. Since these substances are often unwelcome for us aquarists, this ability is valuable.

The influence of filtration and especially aeration on plant growth is more or less negative. It cannot be said definitively, but filtration that draws from the surface, and thus aeration as well, is undesirable for plant growth, so let’s not overdo it. Let’s leave the task of keeping an aquarium completely without filtration to the specialists; I myself have several such aquariums. However, plants can also change color. Aquatic plants, much like their terrestrial relatives, primarily exhibit green coloration due to chlorophyll. However, even an individual can undergo changes during ontogeny. The purple color of otherwise green plants is due to a large amount of light and nutrients.

V prvom rade by sme mali dodržať, že veľké jedince (druhy) sadíme dozadu a menšie dopredu. Vyvarujme sa tiež sadeniu presne do stredu nádrže. Rovnako s citom narábajme so symetriou. V poradí dôležitosti by som svetlo postavil pred CO2. Pre úspešný rast rastlín treba kvalitné osvetlenie.

Planting of plants

First of all, we should keep in mind that large specimens (species) should be planted in the back and smaller ones in the front. Also, let’s avoid planting exactly in the center of the tank. Likewise, handle symmetry with care. Trim the roots with sharp scissors to 1 – 2 cm (not for the genus Anubias, Cryptocoryne), and when planting, avoid damaging them. All roots should be in the substrate; no exposed roots are desirable. For some plants with a well-developed root system, such as Echinodorus, gently lift the planted plant after planting – the root collar should protrude slightly. In the case of cuttings, it is advisable to plant the plant so that we do not plant a bare stem, but so that the lower leaves are literally fixed into the substrate. Water plants will thus gain support and have a much better structure. Floating plants such as Limnobium, Pistia, Riccia, Salvinia are freely placed on the surface, while other floating plants are simply dropped into the water. Some of them are capable of rooting, but not long-term. For example, Riccia can be quite effectively used as a carpet on the bottom. Since it tends to float to the surface, it is necessary to somehow anchor it – for example, with flat stones. Microsorium, Anubias are attached to wood, to the filter. The most suitable for this is a braided string from a fishing shop. If we buy plants in a store, they will probably be planted in baskets and mineral wool. These are not suitable for the aquarium, especially not rock wool, so we remove water plants from the baskets and remove them from mineral wool. Plants obtain energy in several ways. Their natural source of energy is CO2 – carbon dioxide and light. Just remember photosynthesis from school. If plants have enough CO2, they cannot utilize it in the absence of light. If plants have enough light, in the absence of CO2, they cannot utilize it sufficiently. However, if both values are optimal, it is a great prerequisite for the very successful growth of our plants. In terms of importance, I would place light before CO2. Quality lighting is essential for successful plant growth.

If we observe oxygen production by plants – the formation of bubbles of fresh oxygen, the concentration of oxygen in the cell has risen above 40 mg/l. For more successful plant growth, it is often advisable to supplement nutrients. Increased nutrient uptake – energy is also contributed by water flow. Plants also receive nutrients in the form of waste materials – fish excrement. Even tanks of the so-called Dutch type (planted) often contain some fish, which serve to constantly enrich the nutrients. In this case, more with trace elements. If there is a lack of CO2 in the water and plants are able to obtain it from bicarbonates, biogenic decalcification can occur – the precipitation of insoluble calcium carbonate on the surface of leaves. However, the uptake of bicarbonates is more energy-intensive. Aquariums often have enough nutrients in the form of fish excrement. Humic acids are substances that are commonly found in water in nature. They are products of the transformation of wood, soil, leaves, plant parts. From the point of view of use for aquaristics, the use of wood and leaves, or cones, nut shells, etc., is interesting. They are extremely important for plants because they can be an energy bridge between a source of nutrition and a plant. Thanks to these organic complexes, the plant can obtain what nature offers. It’s a similar function to what bioflavonoids have for vitamin C. It’s useless to take megadoses of vitamins if the body can’t utilize them. Humic acids are formed naturally in the soil. Iron in water under normal conditions oxidizes very quickly into a form unusable for plants.

The filter is literally an iron eater. However, when it binds in chelates, in organic complexes, it becomes accessible to plants. This includes Fe2+ and Fe3+, and it is precisely humic acids that serve as a substrate where iron can be utilized by plants. Iron deficiency causes chlorosis, characterized by weak tissues – glassy leaves, yellowing especially from the edges, similar to terrestrial plants. Minerals and trace elements are obtained naturally from water and detritus. Trace elements are substances, elements that are not essential in large quantities, but only in low (trace) concentrations – e.g., Zn, Mn, K, Cu. Some of these elements can be harmful or even toxic in higher concentrations. Detritus is matter composed of organic matter from dead plants, fish excrement, etc. In the case of a planted aquarium, the mineral content is often the stumbling block. The best way to achieve this is through fish. Microorganisms – especially nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria – break down matter into substances that plants can use. Plants primarily utilize this energy source through their roots. Some are capable of binding more NO3 – nitrates, for example, Ceratophyllum demersum, Riccia fluitans. Many of us have source water containing high levels of nitrates. The maximum value in drinking water standards is quite high for aquariums, especially unsuitable for new ones. Due to the relatively high nitrogen content, it can lead more easily to the formation of toxic ammonia.

Ten samozrejme uniká do atmosféry – von z nádrže.

The nitrogen cycle takes a little over a month, so the nitrate anion added today travels through the aquarium ecosystem for more than a month before it leaves. Denitrification and nitrification processes are quite complex. An interesting fact even for a layperson is that gaseous nitrogen N2 is also produced as a product of these reactions. This nitrogen naturally escapes into the atmosphere – out of the tank. Denitrifying bacteria are found in the filter. As I wrote in the article about filtration, it is not suitable to subject filter media to flowing water from the regular water supply. Therefore, to avoid killing our established bacteria, it is better to wash the foam in water without chlorine and other gases used in the water supply system. There are products available on the market containing bacteria that are added to the filter. Various fertilizer products and nutritional supplements for plants are available on the market. It is not recommended to combine fertilizers from different companies or products from one company. I use mechanically trapped particles from the filter as fertilizer for potted terrestrial plants. The filter, as an oxidant, usually contains a lot of substances, with iron being particularly valuable, which acts as a balm for often nutrient-poor soils in pots. This material is, moreover, so to speak, digested, so it decomposes relatively quickly in the soil.

Peat reduces the pH and water hardness, providing humic acids and other organic substances to the water. PMDD is a widely used non-commercial fertilizer. It is mixed from potassium sulfate, magnesium sulfate heptahydrate, potassium nitrate, and trace elements: B, Ca, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Zn, which are in the form of organic complexes. It is a suitable combination in which trace elements are probably the most important. I don’t add CO2 using the well-known fermentation process. However, a bottle is enough for this purpose, into which we pour water almost to the top, add yeast and sugar. I recommend starting with warmer water (around 35°C). I seal the bottle with a stopper, in which I have a hole for a tube, which ends in the aquarium with an air stone or a lime wood piece. A cigarette filter can also be successfully used. Alternatively, the tube ends in the aquarium filter, through which it sprays into the water. Such a CO2 dispenser can produce carbon dioxide for 35 weeks. However, it has a flaw in that it is not protected against a sudden increase in CO2 production. It’s better not to pump CO2 into the tank at night. CO2 cylinders for making soda can also be used for CO2 production. There are various CO2 diffusers available on the market. I use a CO2 cylinder with a pressure regulator and a needle” (bicycle) valve, from which a tube goes into the canister in the aquarium. It works so that the water requests” as much CO2 as it needs”. This way, I achieve a maximally reasonable saturation of the aquarium with carbon dioxide. The pressure regulator is there to reduce the pressure to 5 atmospheres. The needle valve, in general, reduces the pressure to a suitable level for a regular thin aquarium hose. There are also normal needle valves, but I use a valve that cyclists use to inflate tires. It costs less than 10 €. There are various pressure regulators available; some offer CO2 pressure at the output, which can go straight into the tank. It can be combined using solenoid valves, which would open according to a switch. I manage it so that I always inject CO2 in the morning. I do not recommend constantly saturating the aquarium, pushing carbon dioxide into the water through open valves, for example, through spraying using a filter. In any case, whether purchasing a commercial product or a DIY solution, it should be borne in mind that gas diffusion in water is about 4 times lower than in air. So, similarly to oxygen, CO2 is absorbed in larger quantities assuming the formation of smaller bubbles. Henry’s law states that the concentration of dissolved gas is directly proportional to the partial pressure of the gas above its surface – it is essentially analogous to osmotic phenomena.

Hits: 13916

Turbatrix aceti – háďatko octové biologicky patrí medzi hlístice a medzi Nematoda. Mikry nesmú byť zatvorené, do uzáverov odporúčam vyvŕtať malé otvory.

Časom sa tekutý obsah vyčíri a my môžeme pozorovať oblaky mikier vznášajúcich sa vo fľaši. Mikry sú dobre viditeľné, keď do fľaše pozeráme proti svetlu.

Turbatrix aceti, also known as vinegar eels, biologically belongs to the group of roundworms and to the Nematoda phylum. At room temperature, they live for an average of 55 days, while at low temperatures, they can survive up to 10 months. Under favorable conditions, the vinegar eel culture can multiply twentyfold in 8 – 10 days (Petr Novák). They reproduce in relatively large quantities, although their size makes them suitable for feeding fry and small fish, such as bettas and neon tetras. We can culture them, for example, in PET bottles, where vinegar is mixed with water in a 1:1 ratio. Apple cider vinegar or fermented vinegar can also be used. We add a small amount of apple, peach, or other fruit to the vinegar. Ideally, this fruit should be blended into a pulp using a blender. The substrate should not be too much, or else the bottle will start to ferment. The culture should not be sealed tightly; I recommend drilling small holes in the caps.

Over time, the liquid content will become clear, and we can observe clouds of vinegar eels floating in the bottle. The vinegar eels are well visible when we look into the bottle against the light or shine a flashlight on them. Vinegar eels are very fine feed, even finer than regular” microworms. The finest available sieves for rotifers, copepods, etc., are not suitable for successful straining; a mesh size of 5 μm is required.

Feeding vinegar eels is a challenge. I do it by pouring them into a bottle with a neck that can be sealed from the inside, for example, with cotton, cloth, or filter material. Ordinary wine bottles with a more or less straight, narrow neck are ideal for vinegar eels. I pour the vinegar eels into this bottle up to the narrowed point, seal it, and then pour in fresh cold water. Vinegar eels are anti-gravitational and tend to move towards cleaner water. Within 24 hours, the majority of these small organisms will be strained into the clean water. I extract them from this using a syringe or simply pour them out and feed them to fish. The substrate that was under the seal is then poured back into the PET bottle with the culture. The culture content can last for a very long time, up to 2 – 3 years. I occasionally replace the PET bottle. A similar but faster method is if we have a so-called U‑tube.

Niektoré nálevníky: trepka – Paramecium caudatum, vhodnú pre poter, Paramecium bursaria, Prorodon teres, Loxodes rostrum, Chilodonella cucullulus, Dileptus anser, Bursaria truncatella, Lacrymaria olor, Spirostomum ambiguum, Stylonychia mytilus, Coleps hirtus, Euplotes charon, Halteria grandinella, Colpidium colpoda, Ichthyophthirius multifilis – zapríčiňujúci známu krupičku, Vorticella, Epistylis, Stentor roeseli, Stentor coeruleus, atď.

Nanajvýš odstátou vodou a pridáme kúsok povrchového bahna. Chov sa nám čoskoro vyčerpá – ide o veľmi uzavretý systém, takže každý mesiac by sme mali chov preočkovať do novej nádoby. Stačí nám tretina starej kultúry, pridáme vodovodnú vodu (ideálne odstátu) a slamu.

Keď chcem rozšíriť kultúru nálevníka, nalejem do novej fľaše do polovice objemu odstátu vodu a prilejem k nej vodu s dobre rozvinutým nálevníkom.

Nálevníky zlejem do takejto fľaše, zvrchu utesním filtračnou hmotou a dolejem čerstvú vodu.

Ciliophora is a large group of single-celled organisms – protozoa, which are commonly found in streams, rivers, and groundwater. They are not considered very suitable or nutritious food, but sometimes it is necessary. There are species that are harmful to fish, so it is better to breed Ciliophora from obtained culture or cultivate them. Some Ciliophora: Paramecium caudatum, suitable for fry, Paramecium bursaria, Prorodon teres, Loxodes rostrum, Chilodonella cucullulus, Dileptus anser, Bursaria truncatella, Lacrymaria olor, Spirostomum ambiguum, Stylonychia mytilus, Coleps hirtus, Euplotes charon, Halteria grandinella, Colpidium colpoda, Ichthyophthirius multifilis – causing known ich, Vorticella, Epistylis, Stentor roeseli, Stentor coeruleus, etc.

Alternative breeding

The breeding of Ciliophoradescribed in the following sentences in this paragraph is possible, but I do not recommend it. If we decide to breed Ciliophora on our own, forget about the hay nálev you learned about in school. With hay nálev, you will prepare Ciliophora, but it is not the right procedure. For this, it is necessary to replace the straw with hay. So we take straw, which we ensure remains submerged, pour water over it, preferably from some stagnant water. At most, with standing water, and add a piece of surface mud. We ensure room temperature, sufficient light, but not direct sunlight. Since straw begins to decompose over time, there is a massive proliferation of bacteria. Oxygen concentration rapidly decreases – Ciliophora will die, except for the Paramecium, which lives just below the surface. Within 2 – 3 weeks, we can observe a milky cloudy top layer where Paramecium is located. The breeding will soon exhaust itself – it is a very closed system, so every month we should re-inoculate the culture into a new container. We only need a third of the old culture, add tap water (ideally stagnant), and straw. It is possible to maintain the culture with milk, which promotes massive bacterial growth. It is enough to add one or two drops to the culture every other day. Instead of straw, beetroot can also be used, where, in addition to Paramecium, harmless Colpidium develops. Alternatively, banana peel can be used. Lettuce and hay promote mold growth, and often parasites of Ciliophora also parasitize on fish.

Guide to breeding a pure culture of Ciliophora

I breed Ciliophora in PET bottles, ideally those that are as transparent and colorless as possible. For practical reasons – it is best to see into them. Ideally, there is soft water available and of course an existing Ciliophora culture, which we put into the water and add a raw egg yolk as food for the Ciliophora. If we do not have soft water, we use at least standing water, for at least two days, preferably up to four, to eliminate all gases from it. Breeding Ciliophora is more difficult than keeping delicate fish alive. When I want to expand the Ciliophora culture, I pour half of the volume of standing water into a new bottle and add water with well-developed Ciliophora to it. Of course, Ciliophora needs to be fed – for which raw yolk serves us best. After adding the feed, it usually takes two days for the bacteria to start decomposing the material extensively, and then the Ciliophora has a suitable environment for its development. It is advisable to breed Ciliophora in several bottles, because especially with abundant feeding, we always remove a large part of the Ciliophora from the culture, and it often happens that it disappears from some bottle. It is important that no algae form in the bottle, so we keep the culture without access to light. The reason is simple, with a darkened bottle, we will not see if there is any Ciliophora in it. If, however, the bottle still becomes cloudy, SAVO helps, which we dilute in water and pour into the bottle. Of course, without Ciliophora. After such cleaning, it is enough to wash the bottle well, or let it air out for a few hours to remove chlorine, and then we can set up the Ciliophora again. If Ciliophora does not want to develop in some bottle, we help ourselves by pouring out part of the contents and pouring from the bottle where the Ciliophora is nice”. Bottles with Ciliophora should have a pierced cap to provide air to it.

Ciliophora is very small, so some people do not see it. I have experienced that people who wear prescription glasses and look at the culture without them, see nothing living in the bottle, they see only dirt”. Even sharp eyes are helped by a magnifying glass, in any case, it is good, especially for inexperienced eyes, to focus and set up the Ciliophora so that artificial light shines behind the bottle, it is dark in front of it, and we set up the bottle against something dark, for example against the night sky. An ideal culture has a minimum of food at the bottom, and the Ciliophora is distributed throughout the volume and swims merrily :-).

Feeding Ciliophora is not without problems. I feed Ciliophora in a similar way to vinegar micrae. Wine bottles are ideal for Ciliophora, which have a narrowed neck, which then expands. I pour Ciliophora into such a bottle, seal it from above with filter material, and pour in fresh water. Usually, by the second day, most of these small animals are filtered into clean water. I then extract them with a pipette or simply pour them and feed them to fish. The substrate that was under the seal is then poured back into the PET bottle with the culture. I occasionally replace dirty PET bottles.

Artemia salina – žiabronôžka soľná, dostupné živé krmivo

Hits: 31519

Vlastne ide o to, aby celý obsah cirkuloval čo najviac, aby žiadne vajíčka nezostali stáť.

Keď chceme žiabronôžku skŕmiť stojíme pred otázkou, ako ich dostať do akvária bez toho, aby sme ich tam preniesli bez soli. Keďže ide o veľmi malé potvorky, pomohol by napr. mlynársky hodváb, ak ho nemáte, vystačíte si aj s bavlnenou látkou. Ja cedím artémiu cez monofil. Dekapsulovanú – odslupkovanú artémiu používam úspešne ako suché krmivo.

Artemia salina – saltwater brine shrimp belongs to Entomostraca. Brine shrimp, predominantly used in aquaristics, live in the sea. They are relatively small, up to 15 mm [1], much smaller than their freshwater relatives. You can get freshwater brine shrimp first through frozen cubes in stores. Artemia is used in various sizes, from fine to coarse. Most aquarists prefer fine Artemia. You can get them in pet stores, at fairs, and other aquarium events. Brine shrimp are sold from various locations – Russia, Canada, USA, China. Their hatchability is a matter of quality. 95% hatchability of eggs is an excellent parameter. The price also depends on it. Brine shrimp is a nutritious feed from which fry grow fastest, especially in height and width. When fish are growing, I do not recommend feeding only brine shrimp.

Artemia can be easily hatched, but it depends on the method of each batch ;-). Unfortunately, the requirements for individual types” and packaging of Artemia vary. I have often witnessed dissatisfaction with the hatchability among my acquaintances, while their friends often have the same” Artemia working great. Bought Artemia are actually Artemia eggs. We pour the eggs into water, for example, into a bottle, to which we add 3 – 4 teaspoons of salt (2530 g per liter) for 1.5 liters of water, simulating seawater. It is necessary to aerate strongly. Basically, the whole content should circulate as much as possible so that no eggs remain standing. We maintain room temperature or slightly higher. They hatch faster at higher temperatures. After about 24 hours, a large part is already hatched. I myself, like most aquarists I know, let Artemia hatch for 2 days – it’s a bit larger then. Artemia hatches in 1.5 days at 25°C. Among aquarists, it is rumored that brine shrimp can be one-day-old or two-day-old, depending on the hatching time and, of course, the type.” They only last a short time in freshwater – about 8 hours.

For higher energy value and consequently easier and more effective arrival of small Artemia into the world, decapsulation is used. It removes the protective coating of the brine shrimp egg. When we want to feed brine shrimp, we face the question of how to get them into the aquarium without transferring them there without salt. Since they are very small creatures, miller’s silk would help, if you don’t have it, you can use cotton fabric. I strain Artemia through monofilament. I use decapsulated Artemia successfully as dry feed.

Z druhej fľaše odrežeme spodnú časť do výšky asi 10 cm. Do oboch dier prevlečieme hadičky.

Do fľaše nalejeme 1 l vlažnej vody (ja som si urobil na fľaši rysku, aby som nemusel stále odmeriavať vodu) a nasypeme kopcovitú čajovú lyžičku kuchynskej soli.

The author of the following text: Róbert Toman

The small crustacean, Artemia salina, is a favorite live (as well as frozen) food for many species of aquarium fish. Many breeders of African cichlids use freshly hatched Artemia nauplii to feed young fish after they have dispersed or left the mother’s mouth. Since only Artemia eggs are available, it is necessary to provide suitable conditions for as many nauplii as possible to hatch. For this purpose, so-called Artemia hatcheries are used. There are many different designs, from which I have tried to select the best features – high hatching rate, low maintenance, and cost. For the production of the hatchery itself, I used a classic 1.5 liter PET bottle. I used 2 identical bottles. Of course, any size bottle can be used. However, I recommend looking for a bottle with the upper third towards the neck somehow serrated, not smooth. This is important when retrieving hatched Artemia from the bottle, as when pulling empty egg shells or un-hatched eggs, they catch on the serrations of the bottle wall and do not mix with the hatched nauplii. Cut the bottom off one bottle right at the bottom. This bottle will serve as the actual hatchery.

Cut the bottom part of the second bottle to a height of about 10 cm. This part will serve as the base into which the hatchery will be inserted upside down. Cut off the top third of the bottle with the neck from this second bottle to create a funnel. This part will serve as a cover for the hatchery to prevent splashing of the saltwater. The individual parts are shown in the picture below. Drill two holes in the funnel, the diameter of which is adapted to a classic plastic hose used, for example, for air distribution in aquariums. Drill the holes slightly smaller so that the hoses only just fit through them. Then, thread the hoses through both holes. One will serve for air supply. It is possible to leave the hose without any termination, but in my experience, it is better to use the smallest air stone possible. I used one as used in ordinary foam filters powered by air. The advantage of using an air stone is that it prevents eggs and Artemia from entering this hose when the aeration is turned off (when siphoning off hatched Artemia). Place the stone close to the funnel.

Thread the same hose through the second hole, the end of which will be close to the funnel. This hose will be used to siphon off hatched Artemia nauplii. The bottle with the funnel is ready for attachment to the bottle. Screw the neck of the funnel onto it. Take the cut-off bottom of the bottle and make two holes close to the bottom so that the hoses secured in the funnel can comfortably pass through them. Turn the bottle upside down and place it into the cut-off bottom of the bottle, which serves as the base of the hatchery. Also, thread the hoses through the holes in this part from the inside out. Small valves can be attached to the hoses. However, I chose to close the hoses with an ordinary laundry clip. Connect one hose, on which there is an air stone, to the air compressor.

Close the second hose with a valve or, as I did, fold it over and secure it with a laundry clip. The hatchery is now ready for pouring the solution and hatching. To prevent water from leaking through the hoses, simply catch them with a wire hook on the edge of the hatchery. Pour 1 liter of lukewarm water into the bottle (I made a mark on the bottle so that I didn’t have to measure the water every time) and add a heaping teaspoon of table salt. I use sea salt, which is commonly available in grocery stores. Start aeration to actively mix the water, and when the salt is dissolved, add the Artemia eggs. The amount depends on the number of fish being fed, and it should be noted that the eggs are very small, so, for example, half a teaspoon of eggs will yield a significant amount of Artemia nauplii.

Ak sme scedili dostatočné množstvo artémií, odsatú vodu vylejeme späť do liahne, vyfúkneme vodu z hadičky, ktorou sme cedili artémie, zaistíme ventilom (štipcom), pustíme vzduchovanie a pri ďalšom kŕmení postup opakujeme.

Hatching

No further adjustments to conditions are necessary for hatching, although temperatures above 25°C are suitable. I have successfully hatched Artemia even at lower temperatures. However, hatching success depends mainly on the quality of the eggs. With strong aeration, the first Artemia nauplii will start hatching after about 20 hours, so we can start feeding the Artemia the next day. We stop aeration (here it is advisable to have a check valve on the tubing to prevent backflow of water from the bottle to the compressor, or simply disconnect the tubing from the compressor and hang it on the edge of the hatchery with a hook) and wait for about 10 minutes until the hatched Artemia sink down and the empty eggshells float to the surface or get caught on the bottle wall, precisely on the aforementioned notches.

Then, we release the clip (the valve) on the second tubing and filter a portion of the hatchery contents through a very fine cloth into an empty cup. On the cloth, we’ll see a pink-orange mass, which are hatched Artemia. After the first filtering, empty eggshells usually also end up on the cloth. We try to suck up as few eggs as possible, as they could cause digestion problems or even death for the juveniles after consumption. However, I have never observed such problems, and the juveniles usually spit out the empty eggshells. Once we have suctioned a sufficient amount of Artemia, we pour the suctioned water back into the hatchery, blow out the water from the filtering tubing, secure it with a valve (a clip), start aeration, and repeat the process for the next feeding. This way, Artemia can be obtained from one hatching for about 3 days, depending on the feeding frequency. It doesn’t make sense to feed older Artemia, as freshly hatched Artemia are best for young fish. The older the Artemia, the lower their nutritional value. After sieving the last batch of Artemia, we rinse the bottle with clean water and can prepare a fresh solution. In theory, the original solution could be reused, but it is usually already partially cloudy. Considering the cost of salt, it’s not really worth saving, and it’s better to make a fresh solution. Artemia hatch better. Some breeders even report that fresh water with a higher chlorine content improves the hatching rate of the eggs. Final practical advice: If we want to have a regular supply of fresh Artemia, it is good to make several such hatcheries and fill them every 2 days, for example.

Hatching

Preto ho treba liečiť opatrne, resp. ak liečime iné ryby, prísavníky predtým odlovme do iného akvária. Neodporúčam chovať prísavníka v akváriu s rastlinami. Veľký prísavník dokáže slušne konzumovať listy rastlín, a pravdaže najčerstvejšie výhonky mu chutia najviac. Takže, ak chceme mať pekné rastliny v dostatočnom rozvoji a máme v nádrži prísavníka, pri veľkosti šesť cm ich premiestnime do iného akvária. Ich vzhľadu ani životu to neprospeje.

A very well-known species, often recognized even by children, and often bought for them. I often hear recommendations from sellers in aquarium shops that it’s good to have a sucker fish. Supposedly, it will clean the glass. It can be said that it’s nonsense. In a normally equipped aquarium, the sucker may end up on the glass, but it certainly won’t clean it in a way that would allow the tank cleaner to skip removing algae and other dirt from the aquarium walls. The keeper would need far more sucker fish, or different sizes of sucker fish than those commonly available. Moreover, assuming that poor sucker fish wouldn’t have anything else to consume. At one time, I had about ten sucker fish in a tank that didn’t even have 30 liters, and the glasses were algae-free. The sucker fish is an undemanding species in terms of water chemistry, but also in general care. It can survive many literal disasters in the aquarium. I think it’s the hardiest aquarium fish I’ve dealt with during my aquarium practice since 1982. I would even say it’s capable of surviving unfishy” conditions. For example, during the tank’s relocation, it often happens that we caught all the fish, or at least we thought we did. After quite some time, suddenly we find a sucker fish, for example, in a bucket on a root, where it held on by sheer willpower. I know cases of nearly drained aquariums, in which a sucker fish survived for a week with minimal water. Perhaps the only thing the sucker fish is more demanding of is the oxygen content in the water. Let’s pay attention to this, especially during transfers and when your kids tend to put too many sucker fish into a small glass. The sight of dead sucker fish is quite repulsive to many people. It also accepts dry food; I recommend occasionally diversifying its diet with spinach, lettuce. Sucker fish like hiding spots, and they often rub themselves in them. They can reproduce in a community tank. However, it’s already problematic whether the offspring can be protected. The male guarding the offspring is very fearless, but he lacks means for defense. After the fry hatch, he no longer cares for them, which often means that their chances in the company of other fish approach zero. As a rubbing surface, the sucker fish chooses some flat, solid object. It’s often, for example, the side wall of the aquarium or a cavity in decorative wood or even a flowerpot. A suitable substrate for the sucker fish, for example, includes PVC pipes added to the tank. There is also one not very aesthetic solution but very effective – a built glass bottle. The ideal one is a broken old bottle from Viney – it’s grooved, and the broken part must be for a narrow neck. The male simply needs a female to lean on properly, preferably in a place where she can’t escape easily.

The sucker fish is prone to the use of medicines. Therefore, it should be treated carefully, or if we treat other fish, we should catch the sucker fish before and move it to another tank. I do not recommend keeping the sucker fish in a planted aquarium. A large sucker fish can consume plant leaves quite well, and of course, he prefers the freshest shoots. So, if we want to have beautiful plants in sufficient development and we have a sucker fish in the tank, we should move them to another tank when they reach six cm. On the other hand, if our aquarium is not doing well, the sucker fish can help by removing decayed plant remains, snails, or even dead fish. I would assess the presence of the sucker fish in the aquarium also in relation to the size of the aquarium, the amount, and type of plants. Ancistrus is a suitable fish for beginning aquariums, especially for its ability to consume organic matter residues. I do not recommend putting Ancistrus in tanks with larger, territorial, strong fish species. Otherwise, there is a risk that they will occasionally be gnawed at. It won’t benefit their appearance or life. For the sucker fish, it’s preferable if it can swim in calmer waters. Ancistrus is a very peaceful fish. Therefore, it is suitable even for hatched fry; it won’t harm them. They only fight among themselves young males, who are probably in a problematic age then ;-). I call them pubertal – immature males. Nowadays, various varieties of sucker fish are already present among aquarists and on the market. Albino, so-called gold, veil-tail forms, etc. Personally, I had a specimen born from a normal form, as well as an albino form, from which it follows that sucker fish are already quite interbred these days. We can recognize a male by the bony protrusions that grow from his head. The female does not have them, or they are very small. Ancistrus can swim very quickly; it’s not easy to catch him, especially in a tank full of plants. Perhaps it has already happened to you that he got tangled in the net during catching. Often in stress, he didn’t want to let go of the net. Sometimes the untangling can take a very long time. Sometimes we have to resort to cutting off the fins, or cutting the net. Once, a sucker fish wandered into the filter for me. The impeller blade probably caught him, and of course, it stopped. The sucker fish showed active signs of life; I did everything possible, but he didn’t want or couldn’t let go. I left the filter freely in the water for a long time in the hope that the Ancistrus would free itself. Unfortunately, nothing like that happened, and I had to start up the filter again. I had to use drastic measures – combination pliers. Of course, the curious sucker fish paid for it with his life.
