Tenebrio molitor – Mealworms are suitable feed primarily for invertebrates (e.g., birds, mantises) but also for other species of terrarium animals. However, I recommend not feeding them to reptiles too frequently, as not every animal can easily digest their shell.” For reptiles, they are more suitable as a dietary supplement to add variety. Their significant advantage is their relatively long lifespan with minimal care and low cost (Peter Krajčí).

Zophobas morio – Superworms are worms similar in appearance to mealworms but significantly larger. This species is suitable as feed primarily for adult birds and larger reptile species such as agamas, chameleons, monitors, and others. From my own experience, I believe they are somewhat more suitable feed for reptiles than mealworms, as I have observed easier digestion, especially in chameleons. Nevertheless, for reptiles, they are still more suitable as a dietary supplement rather than the main source of food. They are relatively resilient, so they can easily live for several months with minimal care. Another advantage is their relatively low acquisition cost (Peter Krajčí).

Musca domestica (housefly – non-flying form) is excellent feed for smaller animal species or hatchlings. Commonly used in the breeding of Rhampoleon species, small chameleons, frogs, and mantises. Breeding is not demanding; wheat bran with milk is sufficient to keep the substrate moist. Flies consume it and lay eggs in it. The larvae also feed on this substrate. After a few days, they begin to pupate, and flies gradually hatch. It is ideal to divide the larvae into several containers to prevent the situation where thousands of flies hatch at once. Larvae and pupae should be transferred to the refrigerator to slow down their development, and as needed, they can be taken out to let the flies emerge. An advantage is the low-maintenance breeding. A disadvantage is the poorer availability and occasionally weak odor of the substrate (ideally, they should be kept somewhere in a basement or shed) (Peter Krajčí).

Do uzáverov odporúčam vyvŕtať malé otvory.

Nálevníky zlejem do takejto , zvrchu utesním filtračnou hmotou a dolejem čerstvú vodu. Do druhého dňa sa zväčša väčšina týchto malých živočíchov prepasíruje do čistej vody. Z tejto ich striekačkou vytiahnem alebo jednoducho zlejem a skŕmim rybám.

Rupice – Enchytraeus albidus – are soil decomposers, feeding on the decomposition of plant material. Their nutritional value is similar to whiteworms, grindal worms, or microworms. They can be bred in soil provided there is constant moisture in the ground. As a food source, decomposing wood, soaked bread, oatmeal, cooked vegetables, pasta, breadcrumbs, and biscuits can be used. The optimal breeding temperature is 16°C; they stop reproducing below 2°C and die at temperatures above 24°C. Therefore, a family house, basement, or some cooler place is suitable for their breeding.

Vinegar eels – Turbatrix aceti – vinegar eels. At room temperature, they live on average for 55 days, and at low temperatures, up to 10 months. Under good conditions, the vinegar eel culture can multiply twentyfold in 8 to 10 days. They can be bred, for example, in PET bottles containing vinegar and water in a 1:1 ratio. A small amount of apple, peach, or other fruit is added to the vinegar. Ideally, this fruit should be pureed in a blender. It is recommended to drill small holes in the caps. Vinegar eels are very small feed, even thinner than regular” microworms. A mesh sieve is used for straining – microworms are poured into a bottle with a neck that can be sealed from the inside, e.g., with cotton, cloth, or filter material. Ordinary wine bottles with a mostly straight, narrow neck are ideal for microworms. Microworms are poured into the bottle up to the narrowed part, sealed, and topped up with fresh cold water. Microworms are anti-gravity, and they tend to move towards cleaner water. Within 24 hours, most of these small creatures will migrate into clean water. They can be extracted from the water using a syringe or simply poured out and fed to fish. The substrate that was sealed can be poured back into a PET bottle with the culture.

Tubifex worms – Tubifex tubifex can be found in almost every stream in our area, but not in the quantities that are interesting for aquarium enthusiasts. Today, water is often pre-processed in treatment plants, resulting in less waste and nutrients. Tubifex worms, as known to aquarists, have a reddish-brown color. In nature, their color is variable and depends on the amount of oxygen in the water. Tubifex worms in nature can also be white. They are very suitable food, for example, for catfish, loaches, suckerfish, and small predatory fish. Mud circulates in their intestines long after they are caught. Therefore, they must be thoroughly rinsed and allowed to digest for at least three days after catching. They are very dependent on fresh water, much more so than live whiteworms, so they must be frequently flushed with water, or a constant flow of water is provided for them. It is suitable to keep them, for example, in shallow dishes placed at the bottom of the refrigerator.

Paramecium – the slipper ciliate (Paramecium), is not among the most suitable and nutritious feed, but sometimes it is necessary. Paramecium is bred in PET bottles. Ideal is accessible soft water and, of course, an existing paramecium culture, which is placed in water, and raw egg yolk is added as food for the paramecium. If soft water is not available, use at least standing water. It is advisable to breed paramecium in several bottles because, especially with abundant feeding, a large part of the paramecium is always removed from the culture, and it often happens that it disappears from one bottle. It is important that algae do not form in the bottle, so keep the culture in the dark. The bottles with paramecium should have a drilled cap to ensure air supply. Feeding paramecium is not without problems. Paramecium can be fed in a similar way to vinegar eels. Wine bottles with a narrowed neck that expands laterally are ideal for this purpose. Pour the paramecium into such a bottle, seal it from the top with filter material, and top up with fresh water. By the second day, most of these small creatures will migrate into clean water. They can be extracted from the water using a syringe or simply poured out and fed to fish.

Kaša vločiek a kefíru by mala byť skôr hustá.

Mikrami is a term used for various types of nematodes. They are classified as roundworms – Nematoda. They can reproduce even at temperatures of 10°C. Mikrami are fatty food with a high fat content. They can be bred in dishes – a margarine container works well for this purpose. As a nutritious substrate, in my opinion, kefir and ground oatmeal are the best options. Also suitable are yogurt, sour milk, sweetened milk, or ordinary sweet milk. Bread crumbs, water, or cream can also be used, but they have their disadvantages. Cream, for example, contains a lot of mikrami, but they climb the walls very reluctantly. If bread paste is used – a mixture of water and bread – mikrami climb the walls, but in smaller numbers. Sweet milk tends to spoil easily. I recommend grinding the oat flakes in a blender. The oatmeal and kefir mixture should be rather thick. It is advisable to have several cultures because over time, the environment becomes too acidic, and it is necessary to transfer the mikrami culture to a new one, usually after two to three weeks. Mikrami gradually consume food, reducing the mass content, so it is necessary to add solid parts. However, mikrami do not consume much, and over time, a lot of liquid substrate accumulates, which can sometimes lead to a massive number of mikrami on the walls, and their premature demise. The ideal room temperature is 20 – 25°C. It is advisable to keep mikrami in multiple containers. Under normal circumstances, mikrami spread evenly on the walls. Mikrami are fed by wiping them off the walls of the container with a finger, brush, piece of foam, etc. I recommend using a brush. Mikrami are very small feed, about 4 – 6 mm long, suitable for smaller fish, such as fry.

Grindal – Enchytraeus buchholtzi is related to the rupice Enchytraeus albidus but smaller. It occurs in South America and was accidentally imported in the humus of tropical plants. In nature, it feeds on decaying plant remains. Ideal for breeding are shallow dishes with a larger bottom area. Place moistened foam on the bottom. I exclusively feed grindal with small baby biscuits. Grindal is a soil organism, so it naturally prefers darkness. If we have it closed with an opaque lid, we can even keep it on the table, on a shelf, or in a closed cabinet. The foam should measure from 10 mm to 30 mm. Most of the grindal in a mature culture is found in the foam. If grindal suddenly stops reproducing or individual worms are small, the foam is likely too wet. In such a case, you can take the foam and rinse it under running water in the sink. During rinsing, you don’t have to worry about losing a lot of grindal; some will always remain in the foam. From my own experience, I can say that grindal is not a fatty feed. Even the nutritional values I have found indicate that grindal is roughly at the level of whiteworms or tubifex worms. Sometimes, especially if the foam dries out a bit, mites can appear. Small white creatures running around are quite visible even to the naked eye. They hinder the development of grindal and, if they multiply massively, can completely destroy it. In such a case, I use the contact insecticide Frontline, which I spray on the foam. It works immediately. Grindal doesn’t smell much, and I haven’t noticed any adverse effects on the fish. Grindal recovers from Frontline fairly quickly. You can also help it by moving grindal from another culture. Feeding grindal is very simple; just take the entire foam and dip it into the tank. The biscuit tends to stick well to the glass. Grindal can also be wiped off with a brush or finger. It is an excellent feed; its productivity allows feeding it every day. It has almost no smell, handling it is practical, its size is suitable for small fish, and even larger fish accept it.

Cyklop patrí do podradu Cyclopoidea, radu Podoplea, podtriedy Copepoda – veslonôžky, triedy Crustacea, kmeňa Arthtopoda – . Ide napr. o Cyclops albidus, C. strenuus, Canthocamptus staphylinus,  coeruleus, D. graciloides.

Drosophila melanogaster, commonly known as the fruit fly or vinegar fly, is perhaps one of the most widely utilized and understood organisms by biologists and medical professionals worldwide. It readily reproduces in captivity and has a rapid reproductive cycle. Genetic engineers have extensively used this tiny fly for research purposes, likening it to a lab rat. Fruit flies are used as feed not only for fish but also for birds and reptiles. Aquarists and terrarists prefer the so-called wingless form, known as the vestigial-antlered-strap form. This cultivated form of the fly has wings but cannot fly, with significantly stunted wings. They are also known as wine flies or vinegar flies. These small flies are excellent food, especially for freshly hatched reptiles (chameleons, rhampoleons, etc.) as well as small frogs, various species of aquarium fish, freshly hatched birds, and mantises. They are relatively easy to breed. Depending on the number of flies, one culture can last 2 – 5 weeks or even longer. Their small size (smaller D. melanogaster 1.5 – 2mm, larger D. hydei 2.5 – 3mm) makes them suitable feed for almost all small terrarium animals. However, they do produce a mild yeast smell due to the yeast used in their food substrate. A culture usually costs between 2 – 4 euros.

Daphnia are relatively sensitive to oxygen levels during transport. Therefore, it is better to transport them in so-called frames or with the least amount of water possible. They can be kept longer in a larger bucket, with a lower concentration of Daphnia and assuming nothing is decaying in the bucket. This is quite manageable during cooler periods of the year. In summer, you can aerate the Daphnia during the shorter daytime and, if it’s not 30°C outside, place them on the balcony at night.

Moina is a small species of Daphnia, growing up to 2.5 mm, found in calm waters, often of poor quality and heavily polluted, and lacking in oxygen. They reproduce asexually through parthenogenesis (without fertilization). This means that during favorable conditions, all individuals are female. Only when less favorable conditions arise do males suddenly appear, and sexual reproduction occurs, ensuring the transfer of genetic information. In spring, females hatch from eggs laid in the fall. They can be collected like cyclops and copepods, but the sieve may be less dense, for example, made from milliner’s silk or a so-called Dederon. Daphnia are larger than cyclops but are not as nutritionally dense because most of their bodies are water and a solid cuticle, which forms their skeleton. Moina achieves its highest yield under artificial culture conditions. For fish, it is a more energy-rich food than ordinary” Daphnia and can be compared to cyclops. Daphnia reach their highest abundance in summer.

Cyclops belongs to the suborder Cyclopoidea, order Podoplea, subclass Copepoda – copepods, class Crustacea, and phylum Arthropoda – arthropods. For example, Cyclops albidus, C. strenuus, Canthocamptus staphylinus, Diaptomus coeruleus, D. graciloides. Cyclops is very suitable fish feed, relatively nutritious, and a quality source of protein. Under certain conditions, it can also be cultured. Their population curves fluctuate greatly; it is not uncommon to catch a huge number of cyclops one day and almost none the next. Generally, their population peaks in spring and fall. Cyclops are quite predatory, so when feeding them to smaller fry, care must be taken to prevent them from depleting the population or harming the tank inhabitants.

Vlastne ide o to, aby celý obsah cirkuloval čo najviac, aby žiadne vajíčka nezostali stáť. Keď chceme žiabronôžku skŕmiť stojíme pred otázkou, ako ich dostať do akvária bez toho, aby sme ich tam preniesli bez soli. Keďže ide o veľmi malé potvorky, pomohol by napr. mlynársky hodváb, ak ho nemáte, vystačíte si aj s bavlnenou látkou. Ja cedím artémiu cez monofil. Dekapsulovanú – odslupkovanú artémiu používam úspešne ako suché krmivo.

Vírniky represent a distinct phylum Rotifera. They are highly suitable for feeding fish fry. Their name is derived from their typical movement – swirling, which they constantly exhibit. Vírniky are captured, for example, using nets made of milliner’s silk or monofilament. Some common vírniky species include Philodina, Synchaeta, Lepadella, Pterodina, Copeus, Euchlanis dilatata, Dinocharis, Keratella quadrata, Keratella cochlearis, Filina, Cephalodella, Brachionus, and Pedalion.

Artemia salina, commonly known as brine shrimp, belongs to the class Entomostraca. Brine shrimp predominantly used in aquaristics live in the sea. They are relatively small, up to 15 mm, much smaller than their freshwater relatives. Freshwater brine shrimp can be obtained first through frozen cubes in stores. Brine shrimp are sold from various locations – Russia, Canada, the USA, China. Their hatchability is a matter of quality. A 95% hatchability rate is an excellent parameter. The price also depends on this. Brine shrimp are a nutritious feed, allowing fry to grow quickly in height and width. However, when fish are maturing, it’s not recommended to feed them only brine shrimp. Artemia can be easily hatched, once you figure out the method for each batch. Unfortunately, the requirements for different types” and packaging of artemia vary. I’ve often witnessed dissatisfaction with the hatchability among acquaintances, while the same” artemia works perfectly for their friends. Purchased artemia are essentially artemia eggs. The eggs are poured into water, for example, into a bottle, to which 3 – 4 teaspoons of salt (2530 g per liter) are added to simulate seawater. Strong aeration is necessary. The goal is to circulate the entire content as much as possible to prevent any eggs from settling. Maintain room temperature, or slightly higher for faster hatching. About 24 hours later, a significant portion will have hatched. Personally, and like most aquarists I know, I let artemia hatch for 2 days – they are slightly larger then. Artemia hatch in about 1.5 days at 25°C. Among aquarists, it’s believed that brine shrimp can be one or two days old, depending on the hatching time and, of course, the type.” They only last a short time in freshwater – about 8 hours. For higher nutritional value and easier and more effective introduction of small artemia into the world, decapsulation is used. It removes the protective coat of the brine shrimp egg. When feeding brine shrimp, the challenge is how to get them into the aquarium without transferring them without salt. Since they are very small creatures, milliner’s silk could help, but if you don’t have it, cotton cloth will suffice. I strain the artemia through monofilament. I successfully use decapsulated artemia as dry feed.

March 15th – Scalare exhibition. Most scalare were from the well-known breeder Miroslav Príkazský. Scalare, along with guppies and swordtails, are probably the most famous fish kept in aquariums. These South American cichlids from the Amazon basin thrive in densely planted tanks. There are many varieties of scalare. In the past, the original scalare were of impressive proportions. A scalare should be kept in at least a 150-liter tank, which is 50 cm tall. Determining their sex is difficult; females have a smaller tumor on their head during the spawning period. A scalare is capable of having 1000 eggs, but the fry are very small and require strictly powdered live food. A scalare for breeding needs water pressure – a high water column, but if everything else is in good condition, they can spawn.

Hmyz má identifikovaných viac než milión druhov, tvorí jednu z najrozmanitejších a najpočetnejších skupín organizmov.

Insects have been identified in over a million species, forming one of the most diverse and populous groups of organisms. Their role is crucial for ecological balance and the stability of ecosystems. The Latin name for them is Insecta. They inhabit almost all environments, with their bodies typically divided into three parts: head, thorax, and abdomen. They belong to the arthropods. The paired legs of insects allow for movement, and wings in certain species provide the ability to fly. Insects breathe through tracheae.

They are a key element in food chains, often serving as direct consumers of plants or as part of the diet for birds, fish, and other animals. Many plants depend on pollination, carried out by insects, especially bees and butterflies. Insects play a crucial role in the decomposition of organic matter. Some insect species help minimize the need for chemical pesticides. Many species are endangered, facing threats such as the loss of natural habitats, pesticide use, and climate change.

Článkonožce sú rozsiahla a rôznorodá skupina živočíchov zahrňujúca veľké množstvo druhov. Segmentácia uľahčuje pohyb a flexibilitu tela.

Majú štyri páry nôh a obvykle tri telové segmenty: hlavu, hrudník a zadoček.

Arthropods are an extensive and diverse group of animals encompassing a vast number of species. They share a common characteristic — their body is divided into segments, called segments” or articles.” This fundamental anatomical feature gives them the name arthropods.” Segmentation facilitates movement and body flexibility, with each segment often specialized for a particular function, allowing them to adapt to various environments. Arthropods’ bodies are connected by joints, allowing flexibility and mobility. These joints can be chitinized, enhancing their strength and durability. Arthropods possess an internal skeleton, an exoskeleton made of chitin, providing a tough external covering that protects their internal organs and muscles.

Playing crucial roles in ecosystems as predators, decomposers, and pollinators, arthropods, especially bees, have significant ecological importance. Bees, in particular, play a key role in pollinating crops. Albert Einstein astutely deduced that without bees, our survival would be compromised.

The majority of arthropods belong to the insect class. Examples include mosquitoes, bees, ants, and beetles. They typically have four pairs of legs and usually three body segments: the head, thorax, and abdomen. Crustaceans, such as crabs, have bodies usually divided into two parts: the cephalothorax (head and thorax combined) and the abdomen. Arachnids, another important group of arthropods, include spiders. Insects undergo various life stages, including eggs, larvae, pupae, and the adult stage (imago). Spiders employ different reproductive strategies, with females often carefully safeguarding their eggs. In conclusion, arthropods, with their segmented bodies and diverse adaptations, contribute significantly to the intricate web of life on Earth. Understanding their roles in ecosystems is essential for appreciating the delicate balance of nature.
