Hits: 2661

Chránil ho systém priekop a ochranný múr s rohovými a dvojitými vežami.

In Petronell, near Bratislava, there is a Roman camp located in Austria that is a remnant and reconstruction of the actual Roman camp Carnuntum. It features demonstrations of the societal life of that era, technical solutions for daily living in dwellings, baths, and many other interesting aspects.

The Roman metropolis Carnuntum was situated on the Amber Road, along the Roman border – Limes Romanus between Vienna and Bratislava, at the intersection of trade routes, the Amber Road, and the Danube route. It is the largest archaeological site in Austria (vinokarpat.sk). Systematic excavations have been ongoing since 1885. The word Carnuntum” is likely derived from Kar” or Karn” – stone or pile of rocks (Wikipedia.cs).

Carnuntum evolved from the 1st half of the 1st century AD until the end of Roman presence in 433. The estimated population of Carnuntum is around 50,000. Before the Romans, Celts inhabited this area, followed by the Boii tribe in the 2nd century BC. In 6 BC, the Roman Tiberius founded a military base on the territory of the Celtic city Carnuntum, attacking the Marcomannic king Maroboduus. In 8 – 9 AD, Pannonia became a Roman province as Inferior Provincia Illyricum. After the defeat in the Teutoburg Forest (9 AD), Augustus decided to abandon further conquests north of the Danube, designating the Danube as the empire’s boundary. In the following period, Carnuntum had a crucial defensive function on the Danube. Under Emperor Claudius (4154), a civilian town was also established. In 172 – 175, Marcus Aurelius fought against the Marcomanni and Quadi in Pannonia, staying in Carnuntum from 171 to 173. In 194, Carnuntum was elevated to a colony and received the name Colonia Septimia Aurelia Antoniniana Carnuntum (vinokarpat.sk).

About a kilometer west of present-day Bad Deutsch Altenburg, the 15th legion – Legio XV Apollinaris had a military camp. It was protected by a trench system and a defensive wall with corner and double towers, housing 5,000 to 6,000 soldiers. About a kilometer west of the military camp was the auxiliary legion camp – Castrum auxilii, built in the 2nd half of the 1st century and served a 500-member cavalry military garrison. Around the military camp, a settlement with solid wooden structures (canabae) was established, transforming into stone buildings during the 2nd century AD. Civilian population settled here, and this settlement spread over approximately 150 hectares. Emperor Hadrian granted urban rights to this urban settlement. Carnuntum gradually transformed into a significant trade metropolis (vinokarpat.sk).

The amphitheater in Petronell, with an area of 7244 meters, was one of the largest in the Roman Empire. However, only 8,000 spectators could fit into the arena, and the tribune gives an idea of the original height of the structure. It is assumed that the southern tribune had a two-story and elegantly furnished lodge for the governor. There was one monumental gate on the east and west sides each, and at the western entrance, there was the Nemeseum – a small sanctuary dedicated to the goddess of fate and revenge, Diana Nemesis (Information board).

Jahrh

underts n. Chr. in Steinbauten umwandelten.

Banská Bystrica is the center of central Slovakia and the entire country. In the past, efforts were made for Banská Bystrica to be the capital of Slovakia, and some central institutions are headquartered here. It used to be the capital of the Central Slovak region. Partially preserved fortifications and a castle are found in Banská Bystrica. The Hron River flows through the city. Above the city rises the Urpín Hill, after which the local beer is named. The city serves as a transportation hub on the routes Zvolen – Vrútky to Brezno and Červená Skala, to Donovaly, and to Ružomberok. The city doesn’t have its own airport, but the international Sliač Airport is located nearby. Banská Bystrica is home to one of the most beautiful cemeteries I have ever seen. In German, Banská Bystrica is called Neusohl, in Hungarian Besztercebánya, and in Latin Neosolium. Other historical names include Bystrice, Byztherze, Byzterchebana, Biztrichie, Novo Solio, Wystricia, Byztrice, Bistrichie Soliensis, Bystricia, Nouisolium, Byztricia, Bystrichia, Bistricium, Novum Zolium, Novizolium, Nouozolium, Beszterczebánya, Banska Bistryca, Besztercebánya, Baňská Bystrica (Wikipedia), Neozolium, Besztercz-Bánya, Neüsoll, Novisolium, Besztercze-Bánya (Wikipedia). It is situated at an altitude of 362 meters (Wikipedia). Nearly 80,000 people live here, making it the sixth-largest city in Slovakia (Wikipedia). In 1720, 2,646 people lived here, and in 1918 there were 10,776 residents (Jozef Ďuriančik). The city was inhabited as early as the 9th century (Wikipedia).

The settlement of Bystrica, located in the Zvolen Basin, in the Hron Valley between the Kremnica, Starohorské vrchy, and Poľana, became significant thanks to Saxon colonists who laid the foundation for mining production in today’s city (banskabytrica.sk). Since 1255, Banská Bystrica has been a royal town of Hungary (Wikipedia). In the past, mining focused mainly on copper, iron, and silver (Wikipedia). In 1380, the Union of Central Slovak Mining Towns was founded here (banskabystrica.sk). In 1494, the company Ungarischer Handel (Hungarian Trade, or Neusohler Kupferhandel) was established, becoming one of the largest and most modern mining companies of the 16th century (Wikipedia). In 1495, the Turzovsko-Fugger Company with copper was founded (banskabystrica.sk). Due to the Turkish expansion, the city was fortified with stone walls in 1589 (Wikipedia). In 1605, the town was occupied and plundered by the hajduks of Stephen Bocskay. In 1620, Gabriel Bethlen was elected Hungarian king (in today’s Bethlen House on Dolná Street). Traditional Radvan fairs have been held since 1655. The city theater started operating in 1841 (banskabystrica.sk).

During World War II, after the outbreak of the Slovak National Uprising, Banská Bystrica became the political, military, and administrative center of Slovakia. The Slovak National Council was located here, and delegations from the Czechoslovak emigrant government in London and representatives of the Moscow leadership of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia came here. In 1992, Matej Bel University was established, and in 1997, the history of the Academy of Arts began (banskabystrica.sk). Thanks to its historical center and proximity to the mountains, the city is a popular winter and summer tourist destination (Wikipedia). The medieval city center has been declared a municipal monument reserve since 1955. The area of the city castle (Barbakan) is a national cultural monument (Wikipedia).

The City Castle originated alongside the original mining settlement that preceded the founding of the city. The castle’s function was to protect the yields from the extraction of precious metals and the royal treasury. A representative of the king and the church resided here, and the city council met here. The Chapel of St. Barbara, the patron saint of miners, contains an altar by Master Paul of Levoča. Matej’s House was the residence of a royal official.
