Pomacea bridgesii

Hits: 12246

Čelaď Ampullariidae – Apple snails – jablkové slimáky sú niekedy nazývané aj mystery snails – záhadné slimáky (Apple snail). Druh Pomacea bridgesi dorastá bežne do 67 cm, maximum je 15 cm. Pochádza z Južnej Ameriky – Rio Grande, Reyes River at Beni, povodie Amazonu (Apple snail).

The family Ampullariidae, commonly known as Apple snails, are sometimes also referred to as mystery snails. The species Pomacea bridgesi typically grows to a length of 6 – 7 cm, with a maximum size of 15 cm. It originates from South America, specifically the Rio Grande, Reyes River at Beni, and the Amazon River basin. Synonymously, it is also called Ampullarius australis. P. bridgesii belongs to the Ampullariidae family, characterized by the need for both a female and a male for reproduction. This species does not exhibit hermaphroditism. While other species belong to this group, only the P. bridgesii genus is suitable for planted aquariums because it is the only one that does not consume plants. The care of these snails, ampullaries, does not require any special demands, but the same cannot be said about their breeding. Nevertheless, their breeding does not impose significant requirements either. It is sufficient for the ampullaria to have access to a dry area, typically creating a cocoon on the tank’s cover glass or a protruding leaf.

The calcium content in the water affects their breeding, and this can be a concern in soft water, where providing real cuttlebone is necessary. Snails extract calcium from the cuttlebone, which is crucial for their development. Some aquarium enthusiasts, especially those with planted tanks, use snails to soften water. Snails naturally absorb calcium from the water and can bind a considerable amount into their shells. Conversely, a lack of calcium can lead to their shells weakening and shrinking.

In Žilina, the Zoological Organization Akvafit started organizing an aquarium market every first Sunday of the month at the House of Technology on Vysokoškolákov Street in December 2009. The event is held together with an exotic bird market, which has been taking place for many years. The first event took place on December 6, 2009, from 6:30 to 11:30. The exotic part ended at 9:30, as is customary. I was surprised that the events take place on Sundays and so early in the morning, although I knew that exotic enthusiasts have this habit in other cities in Slovakia.

Four of us from Bratislava attended the first market in two cars. One of us didn’t even bring any goods; we were there to explore the terrain lightly. Besides us, participants came from Ostrava, Poland, other Bratislavans, and some locals. We liked the sturdy and nice-looking tables and were impressed by the number of people attending. I estimate more than 500 people were present. We arrived around 5:45 am, and the first customers were already mingling among us. By 7 am, there was a rush, and after 9 am, the number of people started to decrease. Naturally, fewer aquarium enthusiasts attended, but that was expected. Exotic bird enthusiasts also explored our offerings, and some spent a few euros. I enjoyed looking at their birds, but I only spent money on hot dogs and cola at the local buffet,” which was interesting – prompt service, friendly staff, and they even sold PMDD. Hopefully, no one drank it ;-). The aquarium section offered fish, plants, shrimp, snails, and various types of dry, live, and frozen feeds. Especially the frozen feed was excellent; a full car brought by a certain Pole was almost empty by the end. The Ostrava participants also offered frozen goods, along with live killifish, catfish, loaches, daphnia, and baby brine shrimp.

After the event, we moved with about four cars to Janko Budaio’s place, where he showed us his treasures. After leaving Janko’s, we set course for Bratislava. Meanwhile, several such markets have taken place. Reactions to them were not always positive. Trinkets that sold well in Bratislava were not desired in Žilina. The second joint exotic-aquarium event was on January 3, 2010, which, from my perspective, was a terrible date. Nevertheless, it went well to everyone’s satisfaction. In any case, we liked such events from every aspect. Thanks to the tradition of exotic enthusiasts and the regularity, they will be beneficial for us. I also think about the position of both sellers and customers. It’s evident that the interests of exotic enthusiasts and aquarium enthusiasts overlap and differ. Their motivation to breed and buy is similar. I look forward to future events.

Akvaristika

Čo obnáša akvaristika

Hits: 7117

Nepokladám za vhodné poslúchnuť trendy modernej akvaristiky, prípadne obchodný záujem predajcu akvaristickej techniky a nakúpiť výkonné a zázračné“ technické a iné pomôcky. Prirovnal by som to napr. k postupu v práci – veľa najmä mladých ľudí chce byť čo najrýchlejšie manažérmi, ale nič poriadne nevedia urobiť.

What does aquarium keeping mean? I will try to write briefly about it. More experienced hobbyists surely remember how it was when they decided to keep their first fish at home long ago. The motivations that led us to this were often emotional, which was suitable in any case, but these were living beings, so some knowledge would have been useful. More experienced hobbyists might be interested in my perspective, which aims to be objective, inspiring, and understandable. The photos used in this article illustrate the results of the efforts of many hobbyists and serve as a demonstrative example of the various purposes of tanks – from functional to aesthetic.

So, let’s get to it! :-)) Let’s imagine the situation: I want an aquarium, what’s next? It doesn’t matter what age you are; it’s always good to be familiar with the issue. If the idea of having a piece of nature at home crosses your mind, it’s essential to take this thought seriously. One needs to realize that it’s not a toy or an item that can be used and discarded – fish, aquatic plants, shrimp, snails, and even microorganisms in the aquarium are living beings that should be respected and protected. Colorful fish appeal to almost everyone, and I don’t see anything wrong with developing a relationship with them. A young hobbyist should cultivate admiration for fish, aquatic plants, and the aquarium as a whole and its individual components. This means visiting various aquarium stores or, if lucky, breeders. I do not recommend relying too much on the Internet. I encourage cultivating admiration not only for some red” or blue fish” but for the potential enthusiast to gain at least a bit of an overview. Visiting a zoo or botanical garden is suitable, even one without aquariums. I believe that if someone shows affection for fish, it will manifest towards other animals. I recommend places like ZOO Lešná, Tropicarium Budapest, ZOO Budapest, Arboretum Tesárske Mlyňany. If interest persists, or deepens, and the potential hobbyist insists on having an aquarium at home, I would look for information. I would turn first to classical aquarium literature, possibly something older. I don’t think it’s appropriate to follow modern aquarium trends or the commercial interest of an aquarium equipment seller, buying powerful and miraculous” technical tools. You may ask why? The technology is advanced and efficient, but it tempts people not to delve into how it works. Besides, initial failures with expensive equipment can be discouraging. Many tools are more like marathon runners” – for example, an external filter is an excellent thing, but it works well after a relatively long time. Some other tools are supposed to have the opposite effect – to get the aquarium into good condition very quickly – I am not a fan of these super conductors and accelerators. I would compare it, for example, to a career – many young people want to become managers as quickly as possible, but they don’t know how to do anything properly. Similarly, in aquarium keeping, it’s better to start from the beginning, experience everything patiently, understand it, and later, if necessary, move on to more expensive and efficient technology.

I would like to remind you that a good book doesn’t necessarily have to be found in a bookstore or an aquarium store. It doesn’t even have to be bought right away – books can be borrowed from libraries – and I dare say the selection there will be more extensive and probably of better quality. Personally, I would recommend finding a book by Stanislav Frank, Rufolf Zukal, Zdeněk Drahotušský, or Jindřich Novák. I would recommend today’s books full of beautiful photos for the first phase, which I mentioned earlier – for the admiration phase. In any case, I would handle information carefully. If you don’t have experience, it’s challenging to judge if the information source is suitable. As for the Internet, it is a very broad medium, but generally very untrustworthy. It provides an incredible amount of information, including many high-quality ones that are not available elsewhere, but one must separate the wheat from the chaff, and this is undoubtedly a problem for beginners. I would like to point out that you shouldn’t believe every source; it’s always advisable to verify the information. I would dare to recommend one source that I am convinced is excellent, although it is more suitable for advanced enthusiasts and is in English – www.fishbase.com If you learn what you need, you can proceed to realize your plan. You will inevitably need to address:

  • Tank, its selection, placement
  • Setting up the aquarium
  • Lighting
  • Filtration
  • Aquarium maintenance
  • Obtaining fish, plants, equipment, materials

In any case, the information on these pages will help you. It may all sound complicated, but it can be handled quite easily. Don’t stress about it; it’s better to have the will and desire, and your beautiful aquarium and healthy fish will surely thank you for it. Exactly as seen in the used photos. I wish you a lot of success in your aquarium endeavors.

Was bedeutet Aquaristik eigentlich?

Also, legen wir los!

Ihnen viel Erfolg in Ihren aquaristischen Unternehmungen.

Vodné ulitníky a lastúrniky

Hits: 27302

In tanks, snails are commonly kept, belonging to the class Gastropoda, and to a lesser extent, bivalves of the class Lamellibranchia (Bivalvia). Other classes such as Monoplacophora, Scaphopoda, and Cephalopoda (cephalopods) are not typically found in aquariums, although they are classified as mollusks. In this aquaristic section, we consider only aquatic species, while terrestrial ones are more relevant to terraristics.

The term snails” is often used, but it’s not entirely accurate. We should refer to them as gastropods, including bivalves. Snails play a role in the aquarium as consumers of unused material, such as decaying leaves, leftover food, dead fish, and other organic remains. Their activity is particularly desirable in breeding tanks, where organic waste can theoretically accumulate more. Some of them, like apple snails (ampullaria), can significantly affect water quality due to their excrement, so a large individual is recommended to have at least 30 liters of water.

Snails also feed on algae and, in the absence of food, can consume plants, creating small holes in them. The shells of water snails are composed of calcium, so they struggle in very soft waters – they require calcium. In case of its deficiency, their shells become soft, and the snails deteriorate overall. This means that snails, in larger quantities, significantly influence water hardness. If the water is soft, you can add a source of calcium, such as cuttlebone, to the water for the snails. Regarding the formation of reproductive cells, they are mostly hermaphrodites, but some are gonochoristic. Snails are prey for some fish species, especially smaller ones. Gouramis, other labyrinth fish, cichlids, and loaches enjoy feeding on them.

(uniba.sk). Nájsť v nej možno tieto expozície skleníkové: austrálsky skleník, palmový skleník, kaktusový skleník, skleník úžitkových rastlín, Viktóriový skleník s vlhkomilnou a teplomilnou tropickou a subtropickou flórou. A vonkajšie: rozárium, andezitová skalka, vápencová skalka, travertínovo – penovcová skalka, troskovo – lávová skalka, bridlicová skalka, čadičová skalka, žulová skalka, rašelinisko, letničkové a trvalkové záhony, cudzokrajné a domáce dreviny, rododendrony a azalky, zimuvzdorné a mrazuvzdorné kaktusy, stredomorie, japonská záhrada (uniba.sk).

Nuž, ono to ani veľmi nejde.

The Botanical Garden was established in 1942 on a 6.6‑hectare plot of land around the Lafranconi villa, chosen for its water source from the Vydrica river. The construction of greenhouses and an irrigation system took place after 1945. The garden serves as a workplace for Comenius University, tasked with maintaining and expanding collections of living plants. In collaboration with other organizations, the garden hosts exhibitions. Various plant species are acclimatized experimentally in the Botanical Garden. The public is particularly interested in the thermophilic vegetation grown in the greenhouses (uniba.sk). The garden is open to the public from April 1 to October 31, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is located at Botanická ulica 3 in Bratislava (uniba.sk). The greenhouse exhibitions include the Australian greenhouse, palm greenhouse, cactus greenhouse, utility plant greenhouse, and the Victoria greenhouse with humid and thermophilic tropical and subtropical flora. Outdoor exhibits include the rose garden, andesite rockery, limestone rockery, travertine-pumice rockery, rubble-lava rockery, slate rockery, basalt rockery, granite rockery, peat bog, annual and perennial beds, exotic and native trees, rhododendrons and azaleas, cold-resistant and frost-resistant cacti, the Mediterranean region, and the Japanese garden (uniba.sk). The area of the complex was reduced due to the construction of the Lafranconi Bridge in the 1980s (Wikipedia).

As an environmental science graduate from the faculty located on the opposite hill, where I lived for five years, I frequented the Botanical Garden. We even had free access with our student IDs, and I visited outside public hours to study occasionally. There is a romantically charming pond in the back, near the Lafranconi Bridge, and a space with swings and other facilities for children not far from it. Throughout my acquaintance with it, since 1991, it’s been quite a long time, I can responsibly say that the marketing of the Botanical Garden is close to zero. I don’t understand it because, although the area might not be in favor with the powerful, it can certainly be better promoted. Investments are made, and things are maintained. As I often come here to take photographs, I have also come across a notice prohibiting commercial photography in the Botanical Garden. Well, it’s not something I’m interested in. Unless I focused on weddings, which is incredibly demanding. No, you should be grateful for promotion, for someone who values your work and the work of your predecessors and can and wants to promote it in at least this way. I wish the Botanical Garden that those in charge radically change their approach to this potentially excellent institution, especially in terms of tourism.
