Hits: 6191

Hainburg an der Donau is a historic town in Lower Austria, located on the right bank of the Danube between Vienna and . It is the easternmost town in Austria (Wikipedia). Situated in the region known as Industrieviertel, it lies approximately 12 kilometers west of Bratislava and 43 kilometers east of Vienna. The surroundings of Hainburg are characterized by wooded hills and are part of the Donau-Auen National Park, which protects one of the last large river floodplains in Central Europe (donau.com). Hainburg boasts one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Austria, including city walls, towers, and three city gates. The most famous of these, Wienertor, is considered the largest medieval city gate in Europe (Wikipedia). Overlooking the town is a castle whose origins date back to the 11th century. The castle was built by order of Emperor Henry III and served as a strategic fortress for border defense (Wikipedia).

In addition to historical landmarks, Hainburg offers opportunities for hiking and cycling in the surrounding nature. A popular destination is Hill, which offers panoramic views of the town, the Danube, and the surrounding areas (icestovanie.sk).

The landscape near Hainburg, which I am particularly interested in, belongs to the unique European Donau-Auen National Park. It lies between the major cities of Bratislava and Vienna. Hainburg an der Donau is a small town located near Bratislava. Above the town are two hills: Braunsberg and Schlossberg. On Schlossberg stands Hainburg Castle.

The town, covering an area of 25 km², has a population of just under 6,000 (cestovanie.biz). Schlossberg Castle on the hill was built by Emperor Henry III in 1050 from older fortifications (cestovanie.biz). In 1108, the castle became the property of the Babenbergs (Wikipedia). In the second half of the 12th century, it was renovated under Richard the Lionheart, and in the 13th century by the Czech king Přemysl Otakar. In 1252, it became the property of the Habsburgs. Since 1629, the castle has been managed by the town but began to fall into disrepair (cestovanie.biz). In 1683, the town was plundered by the Turks, with 8,000 inhabitants killed (Wikipedia). During this time, Thomas Haydn, the father of composer Joseph Haydn, managed to escape. In 1789, Emperor Joseph II relocated a tobacco processing factory to the town, which became an important economic hub for decades (cestovanie.biz). The town also features one of the best-preserved medieval city gates in Europe—Wienertor (Vienna Gate) and Ungertor (Hungarian Gate) (cestovanie.biz, Wikipedia). Nearby are the ruins of Heimenburg Castle (Röthelstein), located less than 2 km from the town (cestovanie.biz), near the Danube, below Braunsberg. Medieval markets and castle festivities are held here every year in June and summer (Wikipedia).

Röthelstein is a castle ruin located on a 30-meter-high rocky outcrop above the Danube River, east of Hainburg an der Donau in Lower Austria. The castle was built in the 11th century, and the first written record dates to 1180. Its strategic location opposite Castle on the Slovak side of the Danube suggests it served as a border and watch castle, controlling trade ships and fishing on the river (hainburg.sk). In 1411, it was granted as a fiefdom to Wilhelm von Enzersdorf by Albert V, Duke of Austria (castles.nl). Over the centuries, the castle gradually lost importance and fell into ruin. Today, Röthelstein is a popular destination for tourists and history enthusiasts. The ruins offer an impressive view of the Danube River and the surrounding landscape. Access to the castle is possible on foot from Hainburg, with a path along the Danube passing through a tunnel carved into the rock (panorama.sk). The surroundings of the castle are part of the national park, enhancing its appeal for visitors (Oskar Mažgút). Interestingly, within a stretch of just over four kilometers, there are three castles: Hainburg Castle, Röthelstein, and Devín Castle. This area, known as the Devín Gate, was historically heavily fortified and served as a strategic point on the Danube River (panorama.sk).

Svojou polohou na stolovej hore s nadmorskou výškou 247 metrov nad údolím Labe a rozlohou 9,5 hektára patrí medzi najväčšie horské v Európe. Jej , postavené z pieskovca, dosahujú dĺžku 1 800 metrov a výšku až 42 metrov.

Počas vojnových konfliktov poskytovala útočisko saským panovníkom a uchovávala štátny poklad a .

Königstein Fortress, also known as the „Saxon Bastille,“ is an impressive fortress located in Saxon Switzerland, approximately 30 kilometers southeast of Dresden, on the left bank of the Elbe River. Situated on a tabletop mountain at an altitude of 247 meters above the Elbe Valley and covering an area of 9.5 hectares, it is one of the largest mountain fortresses in Europe. Its sandstone walls stretch 1,800 meters in length and rise up to 42 meters in height. At the center of the fortress is a 152.5-meter-deep well, which is the deepest in Saxony and the second deepest in Europe (cs.wikipedia.org).

The first written mention of a castle on the site of today’s fortress dates back to 1233. At that time, the region was divided between the Kingdom of Bohemia and the Bishopric of Meissen. The castle originally belonged to the Kingdom of Bohemia and served to control the trade route along the Elbe River. In 1408, during the Dohna Feud, the castle was seized by the Margraves of Meissen, and in 1459, it was officially incorporated into the Margraviate of Meissen under the Treaty of Eger. Between 1589 and 1591, the Saxon Elector Christian I had the castle transformed into a modern fortress. Over the following centuries, the fortress was expanded and modernized, with notable buildings such as the Torhaus (Gatehouse), Alte Kaserne (Old Barracks), Friedrichsburg, and Altes Zeughaus (Old Armory) being constructed. From 1722 to 1725, Augustus the Strong commissioned the construction of a giant wine barrel with a capacity of almost 250,000 liters, which was the largest in the world at that time.

Königstein Fortress served various purposes. During wartime conflicts, it provided shelter for Saxon rulers and safeguarded the state treasury and works of art. Over the centuries, it was also used as a state prison for prominent political prisoners. After World War II, the fortress was opened to the public in 1955 as a museum of military history (en.wikipedia.org).

Today, Königstein Fortress is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Saxony, with an annual attendance of around 700,000 people. Visitors can explore more than 50 historical buildings, including barracks, armories, and a chapel, and walk along the 1.7-kilometer panoramic trail offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The fortress also hosts numerous exhibitions (festung-koenigstein.de).

Jej piaskowcowe mury mają długość 1 800 metrów i wysokość do 42 metrów.

Zamek pierwotnie należał do Królestwa Czech i służył do kontrolowania szlaku handlowego wzdłuż Łaby.
