Nitenky - Tubifex tubifexsa v minulosti pomerne hojne vyskytovali v oblastiach, kde bol vypúšťaný odpad – organické znečistenie do vodných tokov – v blízkosti pivovarov, sladovní, sódovkárni, celulózok, priemyselných podnikov.
Iný spôsob (Neubauer in verb, 2009): nalovený materiál dáme napr. do nízkej nádoby, napr. do prepravky na zákusky. Maximálne 5 – 7 cm vrstvu. Zakryjeme ich starou záclonou, nalejeme vlažnú vodu aby bola asi dva cm nad substrát. Necháme ich v tmavej miestnosti s izbovou teplotou.
Nitenky – Tubifex tubifex used to be quite abundant in areas where waste was discharged – organic pollution into watercourses – near breweries, maltings, soda factories, pulp mills, industrial plants. They live in mud in slower flowing or calm streams. In streams, they burrow into the mud and can very cautiously burrow deep into the bottom. Tubifex can be found in almost every stream in our country, but not in quantities that are interesting for aquarists. Today, the water is often transformed in treatment plants, there is less waste, and nutrients are lacking. Nitenky as aquarists know them have a brown-red color. In nature, their color is variable and depends on the amount of oxygen in the water. Nitenky in nature can also be white.
Feeding Tubifex
Tubifex are very suitable food, for example, for catfish, loaches, suckerfish, and small catfish. Mud still circulates in their intestines long after they are caught. Therefore, they must be thoroughly rinsed and allowed to digest for at least three days after catching. They are very dependent on fresh water, much more so than live Tubifex, so they must be rinsed frequently with water, or a constant flow and drainage of water are provided for them. It is suitable to keep them, for example, in shallow bowls, for example, at the bottom of the refrigerator. They can burrow into the bottom, where they can either rot or sometimes it may happen that they mass spawn after a while. If you get live Tubifex, I recommend feeding part of them immediately and freezing the rest yourself. You don’t have to worry. If you freeze them yourself, they will remain in an acceptable condition. The point is that I have not heard of frozen Tubifex from a store that didn’t look like mud after thawing :-(.
Catching Tubifex
Tubifex are caught by taking the entire substrate on which we see them, because they quickly and cautiously burrow into the substrate. We can get them out by sprinkling clean sand on top. Tubifex will gradually crawl over the sand, making them easier to remove. Another method (Neubauer in verb, 2009): put the caught material, for example, into a shallow container, for example, into a cake transporter. Maximum 5 – 7 cm layer. Cover them with an old curtain, pour warm water to be about two cm above the substrate. Leave them in a dark room with room temperature. Tubifex will start to suffocate, and about an hour or two later, they will start crawling through the curtain. We can easily take them from the curtain with a dense hair comb.
Preto ho treba liečiť opatrne, resp. ak liečime iné ryby, prísavníky predtým odlovme do iného akvária. Neodporúčam chovať prísavníka v akváriu s rastlinami. Veľký prísavník dokáže slušne konzumovať listy rastlín, a pravdaže najčerstvejšie výhonky mu chutia najviac. Takže, ak chceme mať pekné rastliny v dostatočnom rozvoji a máme v nádrži prísavníka, pri veľkosti šesť cm ich premiestnime do iného akvária. Ich vzhľadu ani životu to neprospeje.
A very well-known species, often recognized even by children, and often bought for them. I often hear recommendations from sellers in aquarium shops that it’s good to have a sucker fish. Supposedly, it will clean the glass. It can be said that it’s nonsense. In a normally equipped aquarium, the sucker may end up on the glass, but it certainly won’t clean it in a way that would allow the tank cleaner to skip removing algae and other dirt from the aquarium walls. The keeper would need far more sucker fish, or different sizes of sucker fish than those commonly available. Moreover, assuming that poor sucker fish wouldn’t have anything else to consume. At one time, I had about ten sucker fish in a tank that didn’t even have 30 liters, and the glasses were algae-free. The sucker fish is an undemanding species in terms of water chemistry, but also in general care. It can survive many literal disasters in the aquarium. I think it’s the hardiest aquarium fish I’ve dealt with during my aquarium practice since 1982. I would even say it’s capable of surviving “unfishy” conditions. For example, during the tank’s relocation, it often happens that we caught all the fish, or at least we thought we did. After quite some time, suddenly we find a sucker fish, for example, in a bucket on a root, where it held on by sheer willpower. I know cases of nearly drained aquariums, in which a sucker fish survived for a week with minimal water. Perhaps the only thing the sucker fish is more demanding of is the oxygen content in the water. Let’s pay attention to this, especially during transfers and when your kids tend to put too many sucker fish into a small glass. The sight of dead sucker fish is quite repulsive to many people. It also accepts dry food; I recommend occasionally diversifying its diet with spinach, lettuce. Sucker fish like hiding spots, and they often rub themselves in them. They can reproduce in a community tank. However, it’s already problematic whether the offspring can be protected. The male guarding the offspring is very fearless, but he lacks means for defense. After the fry hatch, he no longer cares for them, which often means that their chances in the company of other fish approach zero. As a rubbing surface, the sucker fish chooses some flat, solid object. It’s often, for example, the side wall of the aquarium or a cavity in decorative wood or even a flowerpot. A suitable substrate for the sucker fish, for example, includes PVC pipes added to the tank. There is also one not very aesthetic solution but very effective – a built glass bottle. The ideal one is a broken old bottle from Viney – it’s grooved, and the broken part must be for a narrow neck. The male simply needs a female to lean on properly, preferably in a place where she can’t escape easily.
The sucker fish is prone to the use of medicines. Therefore, it should be treated carefully, or if we treat other fish, we should catch the sucker fish before and move it to another tank. I do not recommend keeping the sucker fish in a planted aquarium. A large sucker fish can consume plant leaves quite well, and of course, he prefers the freshest shoots. So, if we want to have beautiful plants in sufficient development and we have a sucker fish in the tank, we should move them to another tank when they reach six cm. On the other hand, if our aquarium is not doing well, the sucker fish can help by removing decayed plant remains, snails, or even dead fish. I would assess the presence of the sucker fish in the aquarium also in relation to the size of the aquarium, the amount, and type of plants. Ancistrus is a suitable fish for beginning aquariums, especially for its ability to consume organic matter residues. I do not recommend putting Ancistrus in tanks with larger, territorial, strong fish species. Otherwise, there is a risk that they will occasionally be gnawed at. It won’t benefit their appearance or life. For the sucker fish, it’s preferable if it can swim in calmer waters. Ancistrus is a very peaceful fish. Therefore, it is suitable even for hatched fry; it won’t harm them. They only fight among themselves young males, who are probably in a problematic age then ;-). I call them pubertal – immature males. Nowadays, various varieties of sucker fish are already present among aquarists and on the market. Albino, so-called gold, veil-tail forms, etc. Personally, I had a specimen born from a normal form, as well as an albino form, from which it follows that sucker fish are already quite interbred these days. We can recognize a male by the bony protrusions that grow from his head. The female does not have them, or they are very small. Ancistrus can swim very quickly; it’s not easy to catch him, especially in a tank full of plants. Perhaps it has already happened to you that he got tangled in the net during catching. Often in stress, he didn’t want to let go of the net. Sometimes the untangling can take a very long time. Sometimes we have to resort to cutting off the fins, or cutting the net. Once, a sucker fish wandered into the filter for me. The impeller blade probably caught him, and of course, it stopped. The sucker fish showed active signs of life; I did everything possible, but he didn’t want or couldn’t let go. I left the filter freely in the water for a long time in the hope that the Ancistrus would free itself. Unfortunately, nothing like that happened, and I had to start up the filter again. I had to use drastic measures – combination pliers. Of course, the curious sucker fish paid for it with his life.
Synodontis eupterus, commonly known as the featherfin squeaker, belongs to the African catfish species. It has a lifespan of up to 30 years. It belongs to the family Mochokidae and is widespread across Africa. It is easily recognizable by its unique appearance. It has an elongated body covered with small bony plates, giving it a tough and armored look. The most distinctive feature is its large dorsal fin, resembling feathers. It primarily feeds on small invertebrates and insects.

The armored catfish C. paleatus belongs to the fish of South America, with several species of the Callichthyidae family originating from the cold streams of Argentina and Chile. In those regions, some species of armored catfish can grow up to 50 cm, which is undoubtedly an impressive length for an aquarium enthusiast. Paleatus is a relatively small species, reaching a maximum size of 6 cm. It falls into the category of long-lived aquarium fish. The female is larger and more robust than the male. They prefer cooler water temperatures, around 18 – 23°C, but can tolerate warmer water. This species is lively, constantly “roaming” mainly at the bottom of the tank, where it continually forages. They are diligent workers. However, if kept alone, their behavior would drastically change – they could become melancholic. Paleatus gives the impression that they pay little attention to other fish, much like other armored catfish. These catfish can overcome many challenges, but they do not appreciate large, aggressive fish that can harass and bite them. Additionally, they are sensitive to medications – these can be toxic to them. Armored catfish possess intestinal breathing – they can take in atmospheric oxygen. The sucker, as mentioned, spends most of the day at the bottom, but when it needs to breathe, it requires an open surface to access atmospheric oxygen. During this process, it usually shoots up toward the surface quickly and then promptly returns. If we are aquarium enthusiasts in a smaller space, we can observe this interesting phenomenon, for example, in an aquarium store where there are often more armored catfish than we might have.
Reproduction is relatively straightforward. A crucial part of successful reproduction is providing high-quality, nutritious food. In large-scale breeding, massive feeding of live or frozen foods is common, and the breeding tank has a high density of individuals per square meter. In such conditions, armored catfish are bred almost in swarms, with up to 500 individuals crowded on one square meter.
Whether in small-scale or large-scale breeding, it is recommended to lower the temperature or gradually decrease it, for example, by 1°C per day. Additionally, reducing the water level stimulates armored catfish to reproduce. Of course, armored catfish often reproduce without any specific intervention. During mating, the female creates a pouch or basket with her pectoral fins – the fins point towards each other, and the eggs are sticky. The eggs are usually attached to a solid, flat material, including glass. The pair typically does not eat their eggs, but if you want to raise offspring, it’s better to isolate the fish from the eggs.
Vyzerá to komicky. Registrujem formu albino, závoj, black Venezuela.
The Green Cory Catfish originates from South America. I consider its care to be trouble-free. The female is fuller than the male. However, it is not suitable for aggressive fish as they won’t leave it in peace. At the very least, they will chase it away, and in a worse case, it might end up with frayed fins or be seriously injured. It prefers cooler water temperatures between 18 – 22 °C. It is sensitive to medications as they can have a toxic effect on it. Reproduction is relatively easy, sometimes even in a community tank. They like to reproduce together, in a group. To induce breeding, it is helpful to lower the water level, decrease the water temperature, and feed live food like small worms. Like other catfish, they occasionally take naps, lying neatly next to each other on a flat surface, especially evident if they choose a higher stone as their resting spot. It looks amusing. Varieties like albino, veil, and black Venezuela are also observed.
