Kedysi sa hral v exteriéri na zamrznutých jazerách a riekach, najmä v Kanade. V roku 1875 sa v Montreale uskutočnili prvé organizované zápasy. Každý tím má šesť hráčov na ľade, vrátane brankára. Cieľom je dosiahnuť viac gólov ako súper. Puk sa posúva hokejkami po ľade. Hrá sa na tri tretiny trvajúce 20 minút. Hráči sú vybavení ochranných výstrojom, prilbou. Osobitne brankári.
