Hypothesis 1
The name Faško is likely derived from the Italian base word “Faschi – Fasci – Fasco,” meaning bundle or binding. In German, the word “fasche” translates to hoop or bundle. It is probable that these colonists came to Slovakia from the German-Italian Tyrol region. The publication “Dejiny evanjelickej cirkvi v Brezne” by Hreblay A. mentions that Brezno and Boce (Vyšná and Nižná Boca) were founded by these colonists. In the past, Brezno was also called Bressino, Bressano, or Bresno. In Tyrol, there are two towns next to each other: Bressano and Bozen (Ober Bozen and Nieder Bozen) – or Bolzano in Italian. These communities were quite interconnected in the past. Consider for yourself, Vyšná Boca – Ober Bozen, Nižná Boca – Nieder Bozen. In “Boca,” even in 2006, many people with German names lived, such as Träger, Böhmer. Mr. Richard Fasco, in his research, once encountered the root of the name Fasci-Faschi back to the times of Rome. At that time, people near the emperor were named as an elite military unit or bodyguards, tasked with protecting the emperor. They were identified by small axes hanging from their hips.
Hypothesis 2
If the Faško family had a similar origin to the Daxner family, which is quite probable, then they were likely lumberjack families that acquired gentry status around the same time. They were probably originally all Evangelicals who came along with other families from Tyrol or Salzburg as woodcutting experts skilled in floating wood (water chutes, sluices, flumes, reservoirs) on the White and Black Hron Rivers. Some wealthier individuals moved to towns, became burghers, and, for their merits, acquired gentry status. When later the recatholization took place (around the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries), villagers were converted to Catholicism by the Piarists from Brezno, but burghers mostly remained Evangelicals. This is evidenced by the fact that in 1675, one of the ancestors of the Faško family had to emigrate to the west, and his descendants traveled through Bischofsheim, Buchsweiler, Pirmasens, all the way to Waldfishbach in Germany, where they still live today (Richard Fasco’s letter from 1997). Germany was Protestant at that time. Did these people know about their roots then? Could the possible German origin be a reason for their emigration to Germany? Or did the upheavals in the mid-17th century, such as the Kuruc uprisings (e.g., Rákóczi’s War of Independence), contribute to this decision?
Hypothesis 3
The Faško family could have been German immigrants from the 12th century who were skilled craftsmen and began settling in Slovakia. It is questionable whether it was in the Upper Hron region because this area was not heavily populated during that period. They might have come from Kremnica or perhaps from Spiš. The connection to Spiš is supported by the fact mentioned elsewhere that the village of Filipovo existed in another location before the establishment of Filipovo, which is now part of Beňuš near Dobšiná. It is also possible that they initially worked in Brezno. They could have worked as charcoal burners, butchers, lumberjacks, and their migration to this region of Slovakia may have been related primarily to wood, given that the area was sparsely populated. According to some information, it’s possible they also operated in the Čierny Balog area.
Nemecká verzia by mala byť prekladom latinskej.
There are two major branches of the Faško-Kaclík family, as in the past, namely the Catholic and Evangelical branches. Roughly speaking, the Catholic branch includes the Faškos from Filipovo, while the Evangelical branch includes those from Brezno. For example, Vladimír Faško, who served as the mayor of Brezno around the turn of the millennium, belongs to the Evangelical branch. A significant number of Faško-Kaclík family members currently residing in the United States also belong to the Evangelical branch. In the past, there were two senators (richtári) from Brezno: Ján Faško in 1649 and Matej Faško in 1685. In the 1920s and shortly after the Second World War, Štefan Faško served as the mayor of Brezno. By the way, the Municipal Office in Brezno lists all the mayors from the mid-17th century onwards.
The oldest known mention is of Eliáš Faško, born in 1590 in Brezno. He studied in Brezno, Bardejov, Brezovica nad Torysou, Košice, and Bánovce nad Bebravou. Eliáš Faško served as an Evangelical priest in various places, including Okoličné, Liptovský Trnovec, Brezovica nad Torysou, and Dubovica near Sabinov. From 1646, he held the position of Šariš senior. Starting from 1648 or 1649, he worked as a pastor in Kecerovské Pekľany, where he passed away in 1662. (Source: Regional bibliography of the village of Kecerovské Pekľany, 2001 – within the Literary Topography of the Košice Region).
The nobility charter of 1651 elevates Ján Faško and his brothers and descendants to the status of nobles. The coat of arms is described in the charter, and according to it, the herald Vrteľ drew the coat of arms. The document originates from the archive in Banská Bystrica. There are two versions of the charter, one in Latin (presumably the original) and the other in German (from Germany). The German version is supposed to be a translation of the Latin one. The second coat of arms is associated with it. It seems that the Faško family requested Ferdinand III for ennoblement based on some older privilege, possibly related to their activities dating back to the Roman period. (Source: Igor Faško, Richard Fasco).
Even today, there are changes in surnames. For example, the father is Faško, and the son is Kaclík. Faškos and Kaclíks are present in Filipovo and surrounding villages today. Many of them also reside in larger cities like Brezno, Banská Bystrica, Zvolen, and elsewhere in Slovakia. However, I have not encountered a Faško or Kaclík who does not have roots in Horehronie. I don’t believe such an individual exists. I am convinced that the names Faško and Kaclík have their origin in Horehronie, Slovakia. The names Kaclík and, especially, Faško also appear in the USA, particularly in the Pittsburgh area of Pennsylvania. Additionally, these names can be found in the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Greece, Albania, Italy, and Indonesia.
To identify individuals, past surnames were also necessary. For example, Grandfather Pavol Kaclík was known as Tajtulita, but the “whole house” was Chyžiak. These names are still used today. It’s also possible that over time, there was a radical change in names. For instance, the surname “Z lúky” might have evolved into the family name “Zluky.”
Various
The information found in the documents varies in quality. Most of it is in Latin, only from 1843 to 1849 in Hungarian, and occasionally in Slovak, especially when the father approves the wedding. Sometimes the readability is excellent, other times not. In wedding records, there is usually information about the parents but without dates, and the ages of the betrothed are almost always mentioned. The worst quality of data is found in death records. For small children, parents are mentioned, and for adults, either the spouse is known, or there is an issue with widows. In such cases, only age and origin are known. For women, sometimes the maiden name is mentioned, and sometimes the name is given after the husband. There are often significant discrepancies in age at death and marriage from the actual age, indicating that people may not have known their exact age.
Verschiedenes

V treťom bývali švagrovci Knapčok a Rusnák.

Otto Fasko from Germany comes from the noble branch of Jakub Faško. Jakub Faško worked in Bánovce and served as a pastor in Pezinok. According to the Banská Štiavnica archive, there were three houses in Filipovo in 1710. In one, Tomáš Faško lived with his family, in the second, possibly his brother Matej with his family, and in the third, the in-laws Knapčok and Rusnák lived. Records suggest that the Faško sisters inherited from their father Michal Faško, making it interesting that all the houses were “marked” by the Faško family legacy.
According to the census of 1810, there were 12 houses in Filipovo with 106 inhabitants in 22 families. The Faško family had a significant presence with 61 individuals in 9 houses (including 3 houses with other families). There were 13 Dugátovci individuals from 2 families in one house.
A large part of the evangelical branch moved to Totkomlos near Bekescsaba in Hungary after 1850. Probably two families returned from Hungary to Slovakia (e.g., meteorologist Pavol Faško).
In the past, having a large number of children was normal, and your ancestors were no exception. Families often had 8 – 10 children over a relatively large span, but child mortality was high, reaching up to 50%. Women married earlier than today, around 18 – 20 years old, with the youngest marrying at 15 – 16 and needing a dispensation. In the event of a husband’s death, he usually remarried quickly, sometimes within two months of his wife’s death, often marrying widowers themselves. This was often due to the need to care for small children.
As of June 18, 2001, there were more than 60 graves with the names Faško or Kaclík in Beňuša, where dispensation was granted.
