Tropheus duboisi Marlier, 1959. Dorastajú do 12 cm. Registrujem tieto formy: Bemba, Karilani, Kigoma, Maragarasi, Maswa. Maswa Halembe, Ubira.
Tropheus duboisi Marlier, 1959. They grow up to 12 cm. In the lake, they occur as four separate populations named after their localities: Bemba, Kigoma, Maswa, Karilani (Akvarista.cz). Duboisi are typical herbivores of Lake Tanganyika, and it is not recommended to feed them anything resembling meat. Some breeders mention the use of fish fillets, but caution is advised. I do not recommend keeping less than ten individuals, as males can become aggressive towards each other. Duboisi are territorial, and with a larger number, aggression is distributed. The recommended ratio is three males to seven females. Young Duboisi, as they are called among aquarists, are amazingly colored with white spots standing out on a black background. In adulthood, these spots fade, and a pale light-blue relatively wide band develops just behind the point where their body is highest. Somewhat like a deer. In nature, they reach up to 12 cm, but in large aquariums, I have seen individuals measuring up to thirty centimeters. In the wild, they actively seek their food. Keeping them is demanding. Tropheus are sensitive to nitrate levels, so maintaining a clean aquarium, having efficient filtration, and regularly changing a significant amount of water is recommended. Weekly water changes of half the tank volume are not excluded. Tropheus love clean, fresh water. Suitable food for Duboisi includes vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, carrots, cabbage, cucumbers, fruits, and live cyclops. During breeding, Tropheus carry the offspring in a papule, making them papulovores. The number of offspring is quite small, sometimes 5, sometimes 10 individuals, and occasionally only 1 – 2 individuals. On the other hand, the released fry from the papules of adult Tropheus females are significant. I register these forms: Bemba, Karilani, Kigoma, Maragarasi, Maswa. Maswa Halembe, Ubira.
Tropheus duboisi Marlier, 1959. Maswa Halembe, Ubira.
Tropheus duboisi Marlier, 1959. Wanakua hadi sentimita 12. Ninasajili hizi sura: Bemba, Karilani, Kigoma, Maragarasi, Maswa. Maswa Halembe, Ubira.
Registrujem tieto formy: Kasanga, Moliro, Nmasi, Tanzania (Peter Kaclík). Dosahuje 13.5 cm, ideálna preň je teplota 24 – 26°C (Fish Base), pH 7.8 – 9.5, dH 10 – 30°H (Seriously Fish).
Callochromis macrops (Boulenger, 1898) is an endemic species of Lake Tanganyika. Its breeding is considered among the more demanding ones. It is characterized by significant sexual dimorphism. The male is more brightly colored and has longer fins than the female, exhibiting more pronounced behavior during the breeding period when attempting to attract the female. The female is typically smaller with more subdued coloring. During the breeding period, she takes care of the offspring and protects them in hiding places. This fish is a typical inhabitant of sandy and rocky areas of Lake Tanganyika. Its diet primarily consists of plankton and small invertebrates. I register these variants: Kasanga, Moliro, Nmasi, Tanzania (Peter Kaclík). It reaches a length of 13.5 cm, and the ideal temperature is 24 – 26°C (Fish Base), pH 7.8 – 9.5, dH 10 – 30°H (Seriously Fish).

Females are orange with black spots. Interestingly, their coloration becomes more vibrant as they age. Males tend to be more yellowish-orange, with dominant individuals displaying a blue sheen. Some may be whitish, resembling Maylandia callainos, or even almost dark blue. Other males are colored burgundy, and those without spots exhibit visible zebra-like striping. Males grow larger than females.
I once witnessed an interesting situation during the offspring’s upbringing – a female held the fry in a breeding box. Before I moved her there, I noticed that she seemed unusually lethargic and exhausted. Note that this was approximately on the fifth day of her pregnancy. Three weeks later, the female released the fry, and there were only eight of them. Some were well-developed, while others still had undigested yolk sacs, which surprised me. I had offered live brine shrimp and micro pellets to the female a week before. During the day, she ignored the brine shrimp, but they were gone by the morning. The female was very exhausted. As I wanted her to continue caring for her offspring, I attempted to feed her with brine shrimp through a breeder box. Fortunately, it worked as I had envisioned. The female ate and gathered all the fish in the evening. She repeated this behavior for about four days. In the morning, the female “waited” for food, ate, and then, especially at night, accepted her offspring into her buccal cavity again. After this period, when I saw that the fry had digested yolk sacs, I caught the female. They will be very good fish because they received such exceptional care and love, a rarity among African cichlids. If the females are capable of performing similar acts in adulthood, it will be a great success.

Also known as Pseudotropheus zebra red red, it is a red zebra cichlid. Synonyms include the generic name Metriaclima. In aquarium slang, they are referred to as “red zebras.” As seen below, sometimes melanin pigment erupts, and suddenly, the beautiful orange fish is covered in black dots or spots. It is a normal phenomenon that occurs over time – at a certain stage in life, red zebras have small black dots, and at other times, larger ones. Often, they have no black pigment on them. The female is orange-yellow, and the male is pale yellow, especially during mating season, with a sheen of pale blue. Gender can be easily distinguished, similar to other African cichlids, once they reach maturity or undergo coloration changes. Red zebras are very common African cichlids in pet stores. The male is typically assertive, and females can show jealousy, especially when they have fry.

Aphyosemion poliaki Amiet, 1991 patrí do čeľade Nothobranchiide (fishbase.org). Pochádza z východných svahov Mount Kamerunu, v potokoch plných organického materiálu, v mäkkej vode bohatej na rastlinné výluhy a humínové látky. Živia sa hmyzom. Voda pre chov je vhodná s ph 5.5 – 6.8, 3 dH. Dorastá do 5 cm (mistecko.cz). Dorastá do veľkosti približne 5 cm.
Samec počas pytačiek prezentuje svoje farebné plutvy a vykonáva tanečné pohyby okolo samičky.
Aphyosemion poliaki Amiet, 1991 belongs to the Nothobranchiidae family (fishbase.org). It originates from the eastern slopes of Mount Cameroon, where it inhabits streams filled with organic material, in soft water rich in plant residues and humic substances. They feed on insects. Suitable water conditions for their maintenance include a pH range of 5.5 – 6.8 and 3 dH. These fish grow up to 5 cm in size (mistecko.cz) and are often found in the upper and middle parts of the tank (rybicky.net). It is also known as Mount Cameroon Panchax. This small, colorful fish’s natural habitat consists of streams. They reach a size of approximately 5 cm, and their bodies are vividly colored, often adorned with contrasting stripes and spots. Additionally, these fish have the ability to change their color, especially during the breeding season. The male is typically more conspicuous, displaying more intense colors and distinctive patterns, while females are generally smaller and less vividly colored.
It prefers soft water with low mineral content. The water temperature should be suitable, ranging from 22 to 26 °C. Aquarium lighting should be moderate, and suitable hiding places and plants provide fish with places to hide and spawn. These fish are suitable for community aquariums, but when selecting companion species, care should be taken to ensure their peaceful nature. The aquarium should be well-filtered and regularly maintained to ensure optimal water quality. Breeding can be challenging. During courtship, the male displays its colorful fins and performs dance-like movements around the female. After mating, the female lays eggs on plants or in the substrate. During incubation, the male watches over the eggs and protects them from potential threats.
