Nežiaduce živočíchy v akváriu

Hits: 11510

Nálevníky zavlečieme najčastejšie do akvária živou potravou. Pomôže správna filtrácia a vzduchovanie. V prípade nutnosti a ak je to vhodné, môžeme pridať do vody soľ. Tá má schopnosť nálevníka zlikvidovať.

Planariaploskulice Turbellaria kmeňa Plathelminthes si môžeme zavliecť živou potravou. Likviduje ich rájovec Macropodus opercularis.

Pijavky Piscicola geometra, Hemiclepis marginata, Haemopis sanguisuga patria medzi podrad Rhynchobdellidae, rad maloštetinavcov – Oligochaeta, triedy Clitellata – opaskovce, kmeňa Annelida – obrúčkavce, prípadne Hemiclepis marginata. Obyčajne si ich donesieme s nitenkami. Likvidujeme ich mechanicky, alebo roztokom hypermangánu.

Arguluskaprivec patrí do podtriedy Branchiura, triedy kôrovcov Crustacea, podkmeňa Branchiata, oddelenia Mandibulata, kmeňa článkonožcov Arthropoda.

Patria do triedy Lamellibranchia (lastúrniky), do kmeňa mäkkýšov Mollusca.

Ostracoda, Phyllopoda, Copepoda, vodné okrúhlovce – kmeň Nemathelminthes, machovky Bryozoa patriace do kmeňa Tentaculata, vodnár striebristýArgyroneta aquaticapodrad Ecribellata, rad Araneida - pavúky, Hydracarina – rad Acarina – roztoče, trieda Arachnoidea – pavúkovce, larvy – najady vážiek – rad Odonata triedy hmyz – Ectognatha – môžu byť pre ryby nebezpečné, sú pomerne veľké (4 cm), larvy potápnikov – napr. druhu Dytiscus marginalis – čeľaď Dytiscidae, podrad Adephaga, veľkého radu hmyzu – chrobákov (Coleoptera), chvostoskokyCollembola – trieda Entognatha, nadtrieda Hexapoda - šesťnôžky, Notonectapatriaca medzi bzdochy Heteroptera

It often happens that despite our efforts, unwanted visitors move into the aquarium – unwanted organisms. We can introduce them from the outside in the form of spores, germs, and so on. It’s almost always better to get rid of them. One such type is a representative of the phylum Cnidaria – Hydra. Hydra, by the way, is a natural indicator of water cleanliness. However, it usually doesn’t last long in the tank. It constantly moves around in the aquarium. It’s mostly harmless but can negatively affect slow-moving fry. Paradise fish, gouramis, and rosy barbs can eliminate Hydra.

Another type is the ciliate. Ciliates are microorganisms of the phylum Ciliophora. We usually introduce ciliates into the aquarium with live food. Among aquarists, the term good ciliates” and bad ciliates” is common. Good ciliates are those that serve as food for fish. Among these, the most well-known protozoa include Paramecium. Bad ciliates are species that are potential sources of infection, capable of harming fish fry, and unnecessarily increasing the decomposition of matter. The most common massive invasion of ciliates causes a milky cloudiness, which occurs mainly in new and freshly established tanks. Sometimes, if we clean the filter improperly under running tap water, the ciliates can multiply exponentially to the point where we can’t see the opposite wall of the tank. Milky cloudiness is nothing terrible; it will disappear” over time. Proper filtration and aeration help. If necessary and appropriate, we can add salt to the water. It has the ability to eliminate ciliates.

Planarians – flatworms of the class Turbellaria, can be introduced into the aquarium with live food. They are eliminated by paradise fish.

Leeches such as Piscicola geometra, Hemiclepis marginata, Haemopis sanguisuga belong to the suborder Rhynchobdellidae, order Hirudinida – leeches, class Clitellata – oligochaetes, order Annelida – segmented worms, and sometimes Hemiclepis marginata. We usually bring them in with threadlike substances. They are eliminated mechanically or with a solution of potassium permanganate.

Argulus – fish louse belongs to the suborder Branchiura, class Crustacea – crustaceans, subclass Branchiata, superclass Mandibulata, phylum Arthropoda – arthropods. If it attacks fish, removing it mechanically helps. It can be treated with a weak solution of trypan blue or potassium permanganate, in which the fish is rinsed.

Representatives of the bivalves Heterodonta – Sphaerium, Pisidium, occasionally make their way into the aquarium. They belong to the class Lamellibranchia (bivalves), phylum Mollusca – mollusks.

Among other organisms that may occur in the aquarium and are often used as food are representatives of small crustaceans such as Ostracoda, Phyllopoda, Copepoda, nematodes – phylum Nemathelminthes, bryozoans – Bryozoa belonging to the phylum Tentaculata, water spider – Argyroneta aquatica – suborder Ecribellata, order Araneida – spiders, water mites – Hydracarina, order Acarina – mites, class Arachnida – arachnids, larvae – dragonfly nymphs – order Odonata class Insecta – Ectognatha – can be dangerous for fish, are relatively large (4 cm), beetle larvae – for example, Dytiscus marginalis – family Dytiscidae, suborder Adephaga, large order of insects – Coleoptera, springtails – Collembola – class Entognatha, superclass Hexapoda – hexapods, water boatman – Notonecta, belonging to the backswimmers Heteroptera

Less common organisms are sometimes offered in aquarium shops. Some of them, which are also often found among aquarists, are the frogs Hymenochirus curtipes. This frog is a big fan of live threadlike organisms. I’ve often seen it confused with the carnivorous and much larger Xenopus laevis. Today, crayfish, crabs, and shrimp are popular. Shrimp and some crayfish are quite popular, especially for their algae-eating behavior. Caridina japonica and CPO” crayfish are particularly popular.

Hits: 57596

Pri zakladaní akvária je ideálne, ak si akvarista najprv zaobstará samotnú nádrž a stojan, vybaví sa potrebnou technikou a až potom si zadováži vodné rastlinyryby. Pred zadovážením nádrže pre vaše rybičky stojíme pred základnou otázkou, aké veľké bude vaše nové akvárium. Každopádne je dobré, ak chceme chovať ryby, aby sme predtým rozmýšľali, kde bude ich životný priestor, v čom budú existovať. Nuž a to so sebou prinesie aj odpovede na otázky, aký bude zaberať priestor samotná nádrž, či bude nutný stojan, akú použiť elektroinštaláciu, techniku, pomôcky. Ako založiť akvárium, aby fungovalo podľa vašich predstáv? Ak máme novú nádrž, ktorá je čerstvo zlepená, odporúčam umyť najmä spoje octom a následne celú nádrž opláchnuť vodou. Do nádrže nasypme na dno štrk. Štrk by mal byť skôr hladký. Na ostrých hranách sa ryby môžu poraniť. Dno akvária je veľmi dôležité. Ryby produkujú exkrementy, ktorý spracúva najmä mikroflóra a neskôr z neho čerpajú živiny rastliny. Ideálne je použiť riečny štrk. Ak použijeme morský a zároveň kremičitý štrk, nemusíme sa starať o uvoľňovanie vápenatých a horečnatých solí do vody, čiže štrk vám nebude zvyšovať tvrdosť vody.

Všetko podľa nárokov a možností vášho budúceho akvária.

Piesok do akvária v zásade nepatrí. Ak predsa len piesok chceme, tak použime hrubozrnný. Jemný piesok tvorí ťažké, zľahnuté, málo priepustné dno. Do akvária určite chceme nasadiť ryby a rastliny.

Celý proces zabehnutia akvária to uľahčí a urýchli.

S rastlinami a rybami zatiaľ trpezlivo vyčkajme.

Mohlo by v ňom byť napr.

When setting up an aquarium, it’s ideal for the aquarist to first acquire the tank itself and a stand, equip it with the necessary equipment, and then procure aquatic plants and fish. Before obtaining the tank for your fish, you face the fundamental question of how large your new aquarium will be. Nevertheless, it’s good practice, if we intend to keep fish, to consider beforehand where their living space will be, how they will exist. This will lead to answers about the size of the tank itself, whether a stand will be necessary, what electrical installation, equipment, and tools to use. How to set up an aquarium to make it work according to your preferences? If we have a new tank that has just been sealed, I recommend washing the joints with vinegar and then rinsing the entire tank with water. Fill the bottom of the tank with gravel. The gravel should be smooth rather than sharp-edged to prevent fish from getting injured. The bottom of the aquarium is very important. Fish produce waste, which is mainly processed by microflora and later absorbed by plants. It’s ideal to use river gravel. If we use marine and siliceous gravel, we don’t need to worry about the release of calcium and magnesium salts into the water, so the gravel won’t increase water hardness.

If we want to successfully grow plants, I recommend using fine gravel with a particle size of 14 mm. Of course, different types of fish have different requirements for gravel size. Gravel can be purchased at a pet store or obtained by other means. If possible, use so-called old gravel from a tank belonging to a friend or from another established aquarium. Such gravel already contains microorganisms that will help the successful development of your tank. Your aquarium will thus establish itself more quickly. Gravel from a store or from nature should be rinsed in water before use. Gravel itself is poor in usable nutrients but serves as a substrate for the development of microorganisms. We can sift the gravel to the desired size. Finer gravel is better for planting. We can also add fertilizer, substrate for plants, such as pieces of wood, alder cones, peat, solid commercial or homemade fertilizer, directly into the gravel when setting up the aquarium. All according to the requirements and possibilities of your future aquarium. The minimum amount of gravel required for a good aquarium is 5 cm across the entire bottom area. However, if we want to achieve perfect plant growth, a layer of gravel 10 cm deep is suitable. It all depends on what we want and what resources we have. For a smaller aquarium, we probably use a lower layer of gravel than for a larger one. Suitability also depends on the types of aquatic plants we want to grow. Larger plants require a thicker layer of gravel.

We can shape the bottom; in general, it’s nicer and more practical to have a higher layer at the back than at the front. However, over time, the gravel will start to move,” so we can create terraces or use other technical solutions to fix the shape of the bottom. Sand does not belong in the aquarium. If we still want to use sand, we should use coarse-grained sand. Fine sand forms a dense, compact, and poorly permeable bottom. We definitely want to stock fish and plants in our aquarium. However, to ensure that fish and plants feel good in the aquarium and that you like your aquarium, it’s necessary to use decorations and the necessary equipment. Setting up an aquarium without technology or with minimal technology is possible, but I don’t recommend it for beginners. Once you have the gravel in the tank, install the technology and decoration. The technology can be covered with decoration, preferably also with plants, and it’s good to plan this in advance. Decoration can include rocks, wood, ceramic caves, etc. More about this in a separate article.

The equipment includes, for example, a filter, heater, air stone, and thermometer. If you use a 3D background, it’s definitely better to install it in an empty tank. Wallpaper on the back wall is also easier to apply to an empty aquarium, although I am against wallpapers in regular aquarium practice. Self-adhesive film adheres very well to a completely empty aquarium, especially if it’s black, and I often stick it to the side walls. Of course, it’s for the back wall. Once you’ve completed these steps, let’s proceed to fill the tank with water. Cold water is more suitable, if available, it’s advisable to use seasoned water from another aquarium, for example, from another aquarist or from an aquarium that you’ve had for some time. This will facilitate and speed up the entire process of setting up the aquarium. After filling the tank with water, turn on the filter and let the water filter for at least a week. Similarly, if possible, infect the filter material with water from another aquarium. For example, rinse the old filter cartridge in water from the aquarium and clean” the new cartridge in this murky water. This will inoculate microorganisms into the new cartridge and speed up the process of introducing the filter.

Let’s patiently wait with plants and fish for now. After a week, drain one-third of the water and plant the plants – ideally fast-growing species such as Sagittaria subulata, Hygrophila polysperma, and turn on the lighting and aeration. Aeration is a very effective tool for suppressing many unfavorable situations. Leave the lighting on for 12 hours a day. Maintain this state for at least another 5 days. The nitrogen cycle takes just over a month. After two weeks from filling the water, the concentration of ammonia is highest. If we have neglected something, we may experience ammonia spikes. However, this means that we have made a mistake somewhere. If we haven’t planted any plants by then, now is the right time. Also, make sure to turn on aeration. After three to four weeks, we can add fish. Carefully monitor their behavior and don’t neglect any signs of disease or poisoning. In case of major problems, change part of the water, add aeration, and in extreme cases, remove the fish to different water, even fresh water.

But how many fish should we keep in our aquarium? First of all, I don’t recommend overstocking the tank. Consider that fish will grow over time, and they grow throughout their lives. Larger fish species require different conditions than smaller ones. The situation also depends on the technology and the specific characteristics of each species. Roughly speaking, we should calculate one liter of water per centimeter of fish body length. Let’s say we have a 1,000-liter aquarium. It could contain, for example, 200300 neon tetras, or 50 larger fish species ranging in size from 10 to 20 cm. If you start with too few fish, your fish may show changes in behavior from the norm, such as great timidity or even fear. In such cases, it’s good to consider increasing the number of fish with regard to their future size. Creating multiple hiding places can also help. Your aquarium, fish, inhabitants, and technology will require your time and knowledge, it won’t work without them. On the other hand, it can show you wonderful things and be a nice addition to your home. It takes about six months for the aquarium to stabilize. There may be problems, but don’t let them discourage you. Maintaining an aquarium is not easy, especially for a beginner. An aquarium depends on many factors. We just need to try to understand them. Let’s look at it in a way that any potential losses resulting from our ignorance or negligence will come from our own pocket. I often hear about procedures that aim for a quick introduction of fish. It usually ends with my observation: Well, you’ve poisoned those fish.” The quips I taught the fish to swim sign” are not lucky for the fish. The aquarium requires attention from a person, and then it will repay them. I wish all aquarists success with their aquariums.

Hits: 13922

Turbatrix aceti – háďatko octové biologicky patrí medzi hlístice a medzi Nematoda. Mikry nesmú byť zatvorené, do uzáverov odporúčam vyvŕtať malé otvory.

Časom sa tekutý obsah vyčíri a my môžeme pozorovať oblaky mikier vznášajúcich sa vo fľaši. Mikry sú dobre viditeľné, keď do fľaše pozeráme proti svetlu.

Turbatrix aceti, also known as vinegar eels, biologically belongs to the group of roundworms and to the Nematoda phylum. At room temperature, they live for an average of 55 days, while at low temperatures, they can survive up to 10 months. Under favorable conditions, the vinegar eel culture can multiply twentyfold in 8 – 10 days (Petr Novák). They reproduce in relatively large quantities, although their size makes them suitable for feeding fry and small fish, such as bettas and neon tetras. We can culture them, for example, in PET bottles, where vinegar is mixed with water in a 1:1 ratio. Apple cider vinegar or fermented vinegar can also be used. We add a small amount of apple, peach, or other fruit to the vinegar. Ideally, this fruit should be blended into a pulp using a blender. The substrate should not be too much, or else the bottle will start to ferment. The culture should not be sealed tightly; I recommend drilling small holes in the caps.

Over time, the liquid content will become clear, and we can observe clouds of vinegar eels floating in the bottle. The vinegar eels are well visible when we look into the bottle against the light or shine a flashlight on them. Vinegar eels are very fine feed, even finer than regular” microworms. The finest available sieves for rotifers, copepods, etc., are not suitable for successful straining; a mesh size of 5 μm is required.

Feeding vinegar eels is a challenge. I do it by pouring them into a bottle with a neck that can be sealed from the inside, for example, with cotton, cloth, or filter material. Ordinary wine bottles with a more or less straight, narrow neck are ideal for vinegar eels. I pour the vinegar eels into this bottle up to the narrowed point, seal it, and then pour in fresh cold water. Vinegar eels are anti-gravitational and tend to move towards cleaner water. Within 24 hours, the majority of these small organisms will be strained into the clean water. I extract them from this using a syringe or simply pour them out and feed them to fish. The substrate that was under the seal is then poured back into the PET bottle with the culture. The culture content can last for a very long time, up to 2 – 3 years. I occasionally replace the PET bottle. A similar but faster method is if we have a so-called U‑tube.

Niektoré nálevníky: trepka – Paramecium caudatum, vhodnú pre poter, Paramecium bursaria, Prorodon teres, Loxodes rostrum, Chilodonella cucullulus, Dileptus anser, Bursaria truncatella, Lacrymaria olor, Spirostomum ambiguum, Stylonychia mytilus, Coleps hirtus, Euplotes charon, Halteria grandinella, Colpidium colpoda, Ichthyophthirius multifilis – zapríčiňujúci známu krupičku, Vorticella, Epistylis, Stentor roeseli, Stentor coeruleus, atď.

Nanajvýš odstátou vodou a pridáme kúsok povrchového bahna. Chov sa nám čoskoro vyčerpá – ide o veľmi uzavretý systém, takže každý mesiac by sme mali chov preočkovať do novej nádoby. Stačí nám tretina starej kultúry, pridáme vodovodnú vodu (ideálne odstátu) a slamu.

Keď chcem rozšíriť kultúru nálevníka, nalejem do novej fľaše do polovice objemu odstátu vodu a prilejem k nej vodu s dobre rozvinutým nálevníkom.

Nálevníky zlejem do takejto fľaše, zvrchu utesním filtračnou hmotou a dolejem čerstvú vodu.

Ciliophora is a large group of single-celled organisms – protozoa, which are commonly found in streams, rivers, and groundwater. They are not considered very suitable or nutritious food, but sometimes it is necessary. There are species that are harmful to fish, so it is better to breed Ciliophora from obtained culture or cultivate them. Some Ciliophora: Paramecium caudatum, suitable for fry, Paramecium bursaria, Prorodon teres, Loxodes rostrum, Chilodonella cucullulus, Dileptus anser, Bursaria truncatella, Lacrymaria olor, Spirostomum ambiguum, Stylonychia mytilus, Coleps hirtus, Euplotes charon, Halteria grandinella, Colpidium colpoda, Ichthyophthirius multifilis – causing known ich, Vorticella, Epistylis, Stentor roeseli, Stentor coeruleus, etc.

Alternative breeding

The breeding of Ciliophoradescribed in the following sentences in this paragraph is possible, but I do not recommend it. If we decide to breed Ciliophora on our own, forget about the hay nálev you learned about in school. With hay nálev, you will prepare Ciliophora, but it is not the right procedure. For this, it is necessary to replace the straw with hay. So we take straw, which we ensure remains submerged, pour water over it, preferably from some stagnant water. At most, with standing water, and add a piece of surface mud. We ensure room temperature, sufficient light, but not direct sunlight. Since straw begins to decompose over time, there is a massive proliferation of bacteria. Oxygen concentration rapidly decreases – Ciliophora will die, except for the Paramecium, which lives just below the surface. Within 2 – 3 weeks, we can observe a milky cloudy top layer where Paramecium is located. The breeding will soon exhaust itself – it is a very closed system, so every month we should re-inoculate the culture into a new container. We only need a third of the old culture, add tap water (ideally stagnant), and straw. It is possible to maintain the culture with milk, which promotes massive bacterial growth. It is enough to add one or two drops to the culture every other day. Instead of straw, beetroot can also be used, where, in addition to Paramecium, harmless Colpidium develops. Alternatively, banana peel can be used. Lettuce and hay promote mold growth, and often parasites of Ciliophora also parasitize on fish.

Guide to breeding a pure culture of Ciliophora

I breed Ciliophora in PET bottles, ideally those that are as transparent and colorless as possible. For practical reasons – it is best to see into them. Ideally, there is soft water available and of course an existing Ciliophora culture, which we put into the water and add a raw egg yolk as food for the Ciliophora. If we do not have soft water, we use at least standing water, for at least two days, preferably up to four, to eliminate all gases from it. Breeding Ciliophora is more difficult than keeping delicate fish alive. When I want to expand the Ciliophora culture, I pour half of the volume of standing water into a new bottle and add water with well-developed Ciliophora to it. Of course, Ciliophora needs to be fed – for which raw yolk serves us best. After adding the feed, it usually takes two days for the bacteria to start decomposing the material extensively, and then the Ciliophora has a suitable environment for its development. It is advisable to breed Ciliophora in several bottles, because especially with abundant feeding, we always remove a large part of the Ciliophora from the culture, and it often happens that it disappears from some bottle. It is important that no algae form in the bottle, so we keep the culture without access to light. The reason is simple, with a darkened bottle, we will not see if there is any Ciliophora in it. If, however, the bottle still becomes cloudy, SAVO helps, which we dilute in water and pour into the bottle. Of course, without Ciliophora. After such cleaning, it is enough to wash the bottle well, or let it air out for a few hours to remove chlorine, and then we can set up the Ciliophora again. If Ciliophora does not want to develop in some bottle, we help ourselves by pouring out part of the contents and pouring from the bottle where the Ciliophora is nice”. Bottles with Ciliophora should have a pierced cap to provide air to it.

Ciliophora is very small, so some people do not see it. I have experienced that people who wear prescription glasses and look at the culture without them, see nothing living in the bottle, they see only dirt”. Even sharp eyes are helped by a magnifying glass, in any case, it is good, especially for inexperienced eyes, to focus and set up the Ciliophora so that artificial light shines behind the bottle, it is dark in front of it, and we set up the bottle against something dark, for example against the night sky. An ideal culture has a minimum of food at the bottom, and the Ciliophora is distributed throughout the volume and swims merrily :-).

Feeding Ciliophora is not without problems. I feed Ciliophora in a similar way to vinegar micrae. Wine bottles are ideal for Ciliophora, which have a narrowed neck, which then expands. I pour Ciliophora into such a bottle, seal it from above with filter material, and pour in fresh water. Usually, by the second day, most of these small animals are filtered into clean water. I then extract them with a pipette or simply pour them and feed them to fish. The substrate that was under the seal is then poured back into the PET bottle with the culture. I occasionally replace dirty PET bottles.

Grindal – skvelé krmivo pre ryby

Hits: 17822

Tým urýchlime prijatie grindalu do molitanu. A to nejaký čas trvá. Záleží to na skúsenosti a množstve už zabehnutých kultúr. Týždeň, dva, niekedy aj mesiac. Do misky vložíme molitan a naň dáme zo začiatku mierne namočenú polovičku detskej piškóty.

Vtedy ho treba vyhodiť a použiť nový.

Grindal – Enchytraeus buchholtzi is related to the rupicids Enchytraeus albidus but is smaller. It occurs in South America. E. buchholtzi was accidentally imported in the humus of imported tropical plants. Its name comes from the Swedish aquarist Nancy Grindal, who first used it as fish food in 1950. In nature, it feeds on decaying plant remains (Tomanec). Ideal for breeding are shallow dishes with a larger bottom content, such as lunch dishes. You can get them at stationery stores. Place moistened foam rubber on the bottom. If you want to use new foam rubber, wash it first. You can wash it in aquarium water, which you pour into a bucket, for example. Alternatively, before using the foam rubber, leave it in such water for several days. This speeds up the acceptance of grindal into the foam rubber. You can even dirty” new foam rubber in water that you used to clean foam rubber from the aquarium. Sometimes I also use aquarium foam rubber, which has both advantages and disadvantages. Grindal is fed exclusively with small baby biscuits. Generally, it can be said that when starting a new culture of grindal, you win only after it has settled in. And that takes some time. It depends on experience and the number of established cultures. A week, two, sometimes a month. Place the foam rubber in the dish and put a slightly moistened half of a baby biscuit on it at first. Ideally, place a glass from an older culture with grindal clumps on it. When you eventually notice that the grindal from the glass has disappeared and there is still not enough in the foam rubber, take a glass from another culture and use it for the new culture. At first, I recommend using a smaller amount of the biscuit. Over time, I divide one biscuit into one grindal box, occasionally more. Sometimes, if the culture is very wet, I feed dry biscuits. However, there is a higher risk of mold, so approach this gradually. Place a glass plate on the foam rubber. It can be thicker or thinner; it doesn’t matter. Glass serves as a practical material for feeding grindal. Cover the entire container. Grindal is a soil organism, so it’s understandable that it doesn’t like light. If we have it closed with an opaque lid, we can keep it on the table. Quietly on the shelf or in a closed cabinet. The foam rubber should be 10 mm to 30 mm. Thinner ones are pointless – they soak up very easily, and thicker ones are prone to settling, with liquid components descending to the bottom, which is not suitable. If the biscuit is not consumed in time, it is subject to mold growth. Especially in summer when it is warmer. However, nothing terrible happens; remove the mold or the entire biscuit. On average, a normal culture in a lunch” container consumes about 34 of a baby biscuit a day. Most of the grindal in a running culture is in the foam rubber. If grindal suddenly stops reproducing or individual worms are small, the foam rubber is probably too wet. You can safely take out the foam rubber and rinse it under running water in the sink. When rinsing, there is no need to fear a significant loss of grindal; some grindal always remains in the foam rubber. Alternatively, you can leave the dish open for a day or two. This is advisable even when the foam rubber is quite dark – which means it is either too wet or too dirty. If you rinse the foam rubber, wash the dish and glass as well. It is bad if the foam rubber is very saturated with water or biscuit waste,” and there is a possible increase in temperature, grindal can easily escape from the foam rubber – onto the sides of the dish and even the lid. If we don’t intervene promptly, the grindal will suffocate. If that happens, it’s the end of the grindal, and it has its own smell ;-). The optimal breeding temperature is 2530°C; below 20°C, reproduction ceases. Grindal prefers a higher temperature, but 30°C is already risky. Over time, the foam rubber can radically change its consistency; it gets old. This is normal; over time, the foam rubber literally falls apart. In that case, throw it away and use new foam rubber. An old bed is ideal. Grindal requires care. More than fish.

Maintenance” is necessary at least once every three days. Roughly ten days is the period after which unprovoked grindal dies. If a culture of grindal is not thriving, I proceed by exchanging the glass plate for one with healthy grindal clumps. So I proceed as in the case of starting. Grindal is also suitable for freezing, but I have not seen it offered in this form. However, I occasionally freeze grindal when I don’t have fish to feed. From my own experience, I can say that grindal is not fatty food. Even the nutritional values I found indicate that grindal is roughly on the level of micro-worms or white worms. Sometimes, especially if the foam rubber dries out a bit, mites can appear on it. Small white, scurrying creatures are relatively clearly visible even to the naked eye. They hinder the development of grindal and can completely destroy it with massive reproduction. In that case, I use the contact insecticide Frontline, which I spray on it. It works immediately. Grindal doesn’t smell much, but it doesn’t kill it, and I haven’t noticed any adverse effects on fish. Grindal fully recovers from Frontline in a short time. Of course, we can help it by moving grindal from another culture. Feeding grindal is very simple; just take the entire plate and immerse it in the tank. The biscuit tends not to detach from the glass; it sticks nicely to it. If it does fall off, it’s usually not a big deal, and the fish usually eat it with gusto. If we don’t like it, for example, if we have small fish and the piece of biscuit is large, then we have to remove it.

Grindal can be wiped off with a brush or finger and fed this way. Grindal reproduces quite well. What is on the glass – on the biscuit in the running culture – is only part of the population that went to feed. Most of the worms are in the foam rubber, in the substrate. There is no need to fear that all of it will float away when immersed in water. Grindal is excellent food. Its productivity allows for daily feeding. It has almost no smell, handling it is practical, its size is suitable even for small fish, and larger ones accept it too. The advantage is that grindal can survive in an aquarium for two days (Tomanec). I have been using it since around 2004, and I have never lost it. I have it in about 30 boxes on average. I threw away grindal foam rubber about four times in the whole time, of which I think twice because some flies settled there, which were nice and big, the fish ate them, but it started to look like massive reproduction. Foam rubber broke twice for me. Occasionally, a box or lid broke. Grindal mites never destroyed any grindal culture for me, not even a single one. When I used to keep fruit flies, they sometimes tried to settle on grindal. With the amounts in which I kept grindal, fruit flies, and mites, there is nothing surprising about that. There are, of course, several methods of grindal breeding. For example, someone might cut out a small part of the foam rubber in the middle to streamline breeding and its removal. Someone breeds grindal on clay and feeds it with cornmeal or oat flakes. Or on coconut, sisal fibers, or filter wool (Tomanec). Oat flakes provide a higher chance of mites. According to some sources, it is recommended to breed them in boiled peat, which is fed with oat flakes.
