Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos – Melanochromis cf. maingano

Hits: 13001

Lately, it has become quite sought after in the Slovak market and is sold under the name Maingano.” The Latin synonym for Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos is also Melanochromis cf. maingano. As you can see below, it is quite similar in coloration to the male Melanochromis johannii, but unlike it, this species does not exhibit sexual dimorphism so prominently. The female and male are very similar in coloration, with the female being only slightly less vividly colored than the male in adulthood. They can be distinguished by body shape, with the male being generally larger. In any case, the male has a more robust body, while the female is more oval and thinner towards the tail. The female is very reliable and readily cares for the offspring. However, there are various color forms that differ significantly from each other.

African lakes have produced an astonishingly diverse fauna of cichlids. Lake Tanganyika, estimated to be 9 – 12 million years old, is the oldest East African lake and harbors the morphologically, genetically, and behaviorally most diverse group of cichlids. Many of the over 200 described species divide into geographically and genetically distinct populations that differ mainly in their coloration. The endemic genus Tropheus is a prime example of this phenomenon, with six species and over 70 differently colored local variants described within the genus. Apart from Tropheus duboisi, the overall morphology within this genus is very similar. Tropheus are abundant in the upper littoral zone in all types of rocky biotopes, where they feed on algae and seek shelter from predators. They strictly avoid sandy and muddy shores, as well as river mouths. It has been proven that Tropheus cannot move over long distances, especially through open water, due to their highly specific environmental requirements, site fidelity, and territoriality.

Tropheus is one of the most studied genera in the lake. Ethological studies of Tropheus moori revealed complex behavior patterns and highly developed social organization. There is no distinct sexual dimorphism. Both sexes defend territories, and unlike many other mouthbrooders, Tropheus form temporary pairs during breeding. The development of eggs and fry occurs exclusively in the mouths of females. Previous phylogeographic studies on Tropheus demonstrated surprisingly large genetic differences between populations. Tropheus duboisi was described as the most ancestral lineage, and seven distinct groups arose mostly simultaneously. Six of them occur in individual littoral areas, and one group secondarily colonized rocky sites throughout the lake. Data obtained from mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis showed that, despite a generally similar morphology, fish coloration can vary greatly among genetically closely related populations. Conversely, it can be very similar among genetically distant populations of sister species. These observations are partially explained as a result of parallel evolution of similar color patterns through natural selection or as a consequence of spatial contact between two genetically distinct populations following secondary contact and subsequent sorting of the genus when hybrids of these populations and their descendants selectively backcrossed with members of one original population.

Ďalší pokles hladiny nastal asi pred 390 000360 000 rokmi o 360 metrov, medzi 290 000260 000 rokmi o 350 m a medzi 190 000170 000 rokmi to bol pokles o 250 m. V najbližšej histórii poklesla hladina počas neskorého pleistocénu ľadovej doby, kedy bolo v Afrike suché podnebie. Ide o obdobie spred 40 00035 000 rokmi (pokles o 160 m) a medzi 23 00018 000 rokmi (pravdepodobne o 600 m).

  • Skupina A1 (Kibwe, Kabwe, Kiti Point)
  • Skupina A2 (Kabezi, Ikola, Bilila Island, Kyeso I./Kungwe – T. yellow”, Kala, Mpulungu)
  • Skupina A3 (Nyanza Lac – T. brichardi, Ngombe, Bemba)
  • Skupina A4 (Nvuna Island, Katoto I.)
  • Skupina B (Rutunga, Kiriza)
  • Skupina C (Kyeso II.)
  • Skupina D (Zongwe, Moba, Kibwesa – T. Kibwesa”)
  • Skupina E (Bulu – T. polli, Bulu – T. Kirschfleck”)
  • Skupina F (Kibwesa – T. Kirschfleck”, Mvua I., Inangu)
  • Skupina G (Wapembe juh, Katoto II., Mvua II.)
  • Skupina H (Wapembe sever)

Historical changes of the lake

It is assumed that the rapid formation of large species groups of East African cichlids is caused by abiotic (physical) factors such as geological processes and climatic events, as well as biological characteristics of spreading organisms. Several studies have shown that large fluctuations in lake levels had a significant impact on rocky environments and species communities in East African rift lakes. The lake was seriously affected by a shift to a dry climate about 1.1 million years ago, causing a drop in the water level by about 650 – 700 meters below the current level. Then, the lake gradually expanded into the period around 550,000 years ago. Another drop in the water level occurred about 390,000 to 360,000 years ago by 360 meters, between 290,000 and 260,000 years ago by 350 meters, and between 190,000 and 170,000 years ago, there was a drop of 250 meters. In recent history, the lake level dropped during the late Pleistocene ice age when the climate in Africa became arid. This occurred approximately 40,00035,000 years ago (a decrease of 160 meters) and between 23,00018,000 years ago (probably by 600 meters). Any increase in the water level shifts the shoreline, forming new rocky areas. Once the distances between newly formed areas exceed the ability of individual species to spread, the gene flow is interrupted, and genetic differences accumulate between populations. Subsequent drops in the water level can lead to secondary mixing, resulting in either increased genetic diversity or relatedness of new species.

Dissemination of the Tropheus genus in Lake Tanganyika

Based on genetic analysis, three periods of Tropheus spread in the lake have been identified. The first period occurred during the rise in lake levels between 1.1 million – 550,000 years ago, the second spread occurred during the decline in lake levels between 390,000360,000 years ago, and the third spread occurred during the decline in lake levels between 190,000170,000 years ago. Climatic changes around 17,000 years ago caused a dramatic drop in water levels not only in Tanganyika but also in Malawi and even the drying up of Lake Victoria. These events synchronized the processes of cichlid diversification in all three lakes. The most plausible explanation for the genetic patterns of Tropheus involves three periods of low lake levels when the water level dropped by at least 550 meters, causing the lake to be divided into three separate bodies of water. Tropheus groups were divided into eight main groups based on mtDNA and their occurrence in specific lake locations, named after settlements on the shore:

Group A1 (Kibwe, Kabwe, Kiti Point)
Group A2 (Kabezi, Ikola, Bilila Island, Kyeso I./Kungwe – T. yellow”, Kala, Mpulungu)
Group A3 (Nyanza Lac – T. brichardi, Ngombe, Bemba)
Group A4 (Nvuna Island, Katoto I.)
Group B (Rutunga, Kiriza)
Group C (Kyeso II.)
Group D (Zongwe, Moba, Kibwesa – T. Kibwesa”)
Group E (Bulu – T. polli, Bulu – T. Kirschfleck”)
Group F (Kibwesa – T. Kirschfleck”, Mvua I., Inangu)
Group G (Wapembe south, Katoto II., Mvua II.)
Group H (Wapembe north)

The primary spread of the genus Tropheus was conditioned by a significant increase in the lake level around 700,000 years ago. The first two groups (A and B) originated from the occupation of the northern parts of the lake, groups C and D developed on the western shore of the central part of the lake, and group E evolved in the east of the central part of the lake. Groups F, G, and H most likely became established in the south of the lake. It should be noted that the recently discovered eighth group C in Kyeso probably represents Tropheus annectens, as Kyeso is located in close proximity to the type samples of fish described by Boulenger in 1990. These fish lived near fish belonging to group A2, which was discovered on both sides of the central part of the lake.

Morphological analyses showed that six out of seven individuals had four rays on the anal fin, and the seventh individual had five rays. Another five individuals caught in Kyeso had six anal rays and also differed in mouth shape and coloration from T. annectens. Interestingly, the fish caught at the Kyeso site previously identified as T. annectens belong to group C, unlike Tropheus polli (group E) from the opposite side of the lake, although they have similar morphology, the number of anal fin rays, and coloration.

Väčšina hlavných skupín sa rozširovala do susedných oblastí počas druhého rozšírenia asi pred 400 000 rokmi a skupiny A a D zvládli presun k protiľahlému pobrežiu centrálnej časti Tanganiky.

Most of the main groups expanded into adjacent areas during the second expansion around 400,000 years ago, and groups A and D managed to move to the opposite shore of the central part of Lake Tanganyika. During this period, after occupying the eastern shore, group A split into four distinct subgroups. Subgroups A1 and A3 likely emerged after expanding to the east of the northern shore. Subgroup A2 originated from the occupation of the northwest shore in the north and central parts of the lake, while subgroup A4 probably resulted from the colonization of the eastern part of the southern shore. Group D likely occupied a very short section near Cape Kibwesa, migrating from the western part of the southern shore. This was only possible around 400,000 years ago when the lake level dropped by 550 meters, as Tropheus cannot move during rising water levels, which would increase distances between rocky parts of the lake over open water. Only a drop in the level by 550 meters was sufficient for the rocky bottom to reach a depth of about 50 meters, creating conditions for the movement of Tropheus.

The expansion of Tropheus Kirschfleck,” belonging to group F, on the eastern shore of the central part of the lake and north of Kibwesa, seems mysterious compared to the current distribution of other members of this group (F) to the southwest around Cameron Bay. In the Kibwesa area, three Tropheus variants (Tropheus polli, T. Kibwesa,” and T. Kirschfleck”) live in close proximity. However, in T. Kirschfleck” samples, two groups were identified according to mtDNA, indicating crossbreeding between probably original inhabitants of this area – T. polli (E) group and relocated T. Kirschfleck” (F) group. There are two alternatives: representatives of group F could have moved along the western part of the southern shore to the border of the central part of the lake. However, it remains unclear how group F could have moved across such a wide area of steeply descending western shore on the southern coast, currently inhabited by fish from group D, without leaving any genetic trace or a smaller population. Alternatively, the group F might have initially spread along the southeastern shore from Kibwesa to Wapembe and later was replaced by relocated representatives of group A, so haplotypes (a group of alleles on one chromosome passed from generation to generation together, with offspring inheriting two haplotypes – one from the father and one from the mother) of group F in Kibwesa are remnants of the originally much more extensive group. Furthermore, according to this hypothesis, group F might have secondary colonized their current territory around Cameron Bay in the southwest during the main period of rising lake levels before 400,000 years ago. This would explain the presence of two different haplotypes in the population in Mvua (F and G) as a result of crossbreeding after secondary contact with representatives of group F. If this hypothesis is true, this colonization could have completely replaced the previously occurring group G, which currently has the center of occurrence south of the Lufubu River estuary. Considering the fact that the Lufubu River, as the third-largest source of water for the lake, represents a highly stable ecological barrier separating the coast of the Chaitika Mountains from the Inangu Peninsula, then group G could have maintained the area of the original distribution south of the Lufubu River but was replaced by representatives of group F in Cameron Bay after the drop in the lake level.

During the third expansion around 200,000 years ago, three subgroups of group A spread along the coast where they originally occurred. Subgroup A2 had to move across the lake from the southern edge of the central part to the eastern shore of the southern part of the lake. Subgroups A2 and A4 extended along the southeastern coast further to the south of the lake. In the Wapembe location in the north, one individual was found to have a haplotype belonging to group H, which spread during the primary expansion, and all other individuals paired into two subgroups A. Two distinct Tropheus individuals live in close proximity in the relative relationship near Wapembe. In Katoto, the main boundary between groups A and G, about 50% of the population was found with a haplotype of group G and 50% from subgroups A2 and A4. Subgroup A2 was also found in the Katukula location, but this population is mainly composed of fish from group G.

Summary

The seven groups of Tropheus have not dramatically changed their distribution range, which may be attributed to the stability of their environment characterized by vertically descending coastlines. These areas were less affected by fluctuations in the lake’s water level, as the Tropheus moved only up and down along the cliffs. One subgroup (A2) was found almost throughout the entire lake, and individuals from distant populations show close relationships. Similar distribution characteristics have been observed in other genera of Tanganyikan cichlids (Eretmodus, Cyprichromis), suggesting that changes in the lake (climatic and geological) likely had a similar impact on the genetic structure of populations of other species.

Fish

The circulatory system of fish is simple, and the nervous system is similarly constructed with a simple brain and spinal cord. Fish breathe through gills, but some species have evolved alternative methods of air intake. For example, armored catfish breathe atmospheric oxygen through the intestinal mucosa. Labyrinth fish, like Betta fish, use a structure called the labyrinth for the same purpose. The labyrinth is a relatively complex organ that develops, for example, in Betta fish and gouramis around 50 days after their birth. Aquarium fish can live anywhere from 0.5 to 20 years. For a very rough comparison, smaller species tend to have shorter lifespans, while larger species can live longer. For instance, neon tetras live for 2 – 3 years, danios, tetras, and guppies for 4 – 5 years, killifish for 1 – 4 years, Ancistrus plecos for 8 – 10 years, and larger cichlids can live between 10 and 20 years. Corydoras catfish often live up to 18 years. Aquarium fish grow gradually, and it can be said that they grow throughout their entire lives. Generally, when compared to nature, non-predatory species usually do not reach the sizes they do in the wild, whereas predatory species often exceed their natural sizes. This is due to competition and our care and feeding. However, if we do not provide enough space for our fish, they simply won’t grow much. For example, keeping a blue acara in a 20-liter tank won’t allow it to reach its full size. But if we provide a larger tank over time, the fish can grow significantly. Alternatively, fish grow, but in a larger tank, they grow much faster. Some fish may not receive proper nutrition, and hobbyists say they are stunted.” This can be caused, for example, by feeding them differently than they were at another hobbyist’s place. There are numerous reasons for slow growth or its cessation. Some taxa genetically grow faster. For example, killifish must be born, mature, reproduce, and soon die within a single season — about six months.

Fish exhibit variable body temperatures; they are poikilothermic organisms, meaning they cannot regulate their own body heat and depend on the temperature of the surrounding environment. In practice, a fish in water at 25°C will have a body temperature of 25°C. It’s essential to realize that water has different thermal properties than, for example, air or metal. More energy is required to heat water than air, and similarly, more effort is needed to cool it down. Another article delves into these energy costs in more detail.

You may have noticed that a large body of water can influence the surrounding climate. Water retains heat, cooling the area in summer and warming it in winter. The same principle applies to the sea. Heat from our bodies dissipates much faster in water, about 200 times faster in the same temperature as in the air. It’s useful to know the thermal properties of water. Higher water temperatures often make fish feel better, but this temperature also shortens their lifespan. Since they cannot maintain a stable body temperature, their metabolism is more strained at higher temperatures than they are genetically adapted to, leading to increased fatigue. Higher temperatures can reduce the fish’s lifespan by half. Higher temperatures also decrease their overall condition and defensive capabilities over time. Fish can endure both high and very low temperatures in the short term. The temperature they can tolerate is 43°C. Beyond this limit, fish suffocate, lose coordination, and perish. Similar behavior occurs after the temperature drops below 5°C. It’s evident that some species are more resilient than others. I refer, of course, to common species from tropical and subtropical regions.

Fish perceive light relatively weakly. Compared to mammals, insects, and cephalopods, their vision is relatively poor. Their shortsighted eyes are not well-developed senses. Fish don’t have eyelids or tear glands. Fish can hear infrasound, although we know little about how they receive and process sound. In any case, they don’t hear our regular sounds. Their hearing organs are more organs of balance. The lateral line is an organ that can do a lot. It helps, for example, blind individuals orient themselves very effectively. They likely perceive waves, pressure, direction, flow, electromagnetic stimuli, food, and obstacles with great precision and adjust their behavior accordingly.

Fish also have touch and smell cells. Taste cells are found in their mouths, as expected, but a significant number is located on the fins. It’s interesting that a fish can touch its food with its fin and determine whether it is palatable or not. Fish are characterized by sexual dimorphism. However, some species of livebearers can, under certain circumstances, change their gender. This phenomenon is most common in the Mexican swordtail (Xiphophorus helleri). If there is a high prevalence of females in an aquarium, meaning a shortage of males, some females can change into males — developing a sword, gonopodium, etc. Many such males are, however, infertile. I have experienced this in my own practice when breeding swordtails for an extended period. Gender change also occurs in other livebearer species but not as frequently as in X. helleri. Concerning fertility, it’s interesting that the later the growth of the male’s sword begins — essentially maturing — the more fertile the male tends to be. However, as mentioned in the previous paragraph, males that change gender are often entirely infertile. Early males, where the sword and gonopodium develop at an early age, have a higher predisposition to infertility.

Plants

Aquatic plants, or rather water plants found in aquariums, are very closely related to their terrestrial counterparts. They contain vascular bundles called veins, which are usually visible. Plants respire throughout the entire 24-hour cycle, absorbing carbon dioxide and water during the day, with sufficient light, to produce carbohydrates (building materials), primarily for consumers, and life-giving oxygen. Unlike terrestrial plants, aquatic plants are adapted to the aquatic environment so that nutrient intake and respiration occur through the entire surface of the plant, often through the roots. Water plants do not have stomata — terrestrial plants have stomata on the lower side of their leaves. Plants produce oxygen through photosynthesis. When we observe oxygen production by plants — bubbles, the oxygen concentration in the cell has risen above 40 mg/l. However, due to the significantly different physical and chemical conditions and the overall character of aquatic plants, photosynthesis in aquatic plants occurs much slower than in terrestrial plants — thus, growth increments are smaller.

Fische

Fische nehmen Licht relativ schwach wahr.

Samozrejme svoju úlohu hrá evolúcia a genetická výbava. Plutvy majú ryby párové – brušné a prsné a nepárové – chvostová a chrbtová, ritná, prípadne tuková.

Dravé ryby majú ústnu dutinu značne ozubenú, no tvar zubov iných typov rýb je skôr v podobe piestov mlynského kolesa. Horné ústa smerujúce nahor majú druhy chytajúce vodný hmyz, a druhy prijímajúce potravu najmä z hladiny.

The body of fish consists of a head, trunk, and tail. The dorsal part is professionally called the dorsum, and the ventral part is the ventrum. The shape of the body allows fish to adapt hydrodynamically to the water flow, to which they are naturally adapted. Some have a laterally flattened shape: Pterophyllum (angelfish), Symphysodon (discus), while others have a pike-like shape – perch. Flattened bodies are an adaptation to more or less stagnant water and dense grassy vegetation. Evolution and genetic makeup also play a role in shaping their bodies. Species with a distinctly streamlined shape are often predators. Species lacking any emphasized body part usually come from deep waters of larger lakes – in such cases, their fins may not facilitate ideal swimming. Fish have paired fins – pelvic and pectoral – and unpaired fins – caudal, dorsal, anal, and sometimes adipose fins.

Fish mouths are adapted to their environment. Carnivorous fish have a highly toothed oral cavity, while the shape of teeth in other fish is more like the vanes of a water wheel. Species catching aquatic insects with upward-facing mouths and those primarily feeding from the surface have upper mouths, while horizontally positioned mouths – terminal mouths – are most common. However, species from the lower part of the water column, bottom-dwelling fish, often have lower mouths – e.g., Corydoras, Brochis – armored catfish, catfish, knifefish, loaches. The shape of the gonopodium – the male reproductive organ of livebearers – is among the distinguishing features. Similarly, the swordtail, which develops in males of the Xiphophorus genus, is essentially an extension of the caudal fin, starting to grow in males during maturity or gender change. The lateral line is a crucial organ for fish and is unique in the animal kingdom. Many of its functions remain mysterious, but it allows fish to orient themselves and sense danger. A blinded fish can navigate and swim without hesitation thanks to the lateral line. The Cichlidae family is characterized by two lateral lines. Meristic characteristics indicate the number of rays in the fins, the number of scales, described by a specific pattern – this pattern is species-specific.

Fish mostly possess monocular vision. However, some species, like humans, enjoy binocular vision. Monocular vision limits their view of the surroundings; otherwise, these species compose an image. If such a fish wants to perceive its prey visually, it must approach it from the side. Let me explain this with a more human-related example – imagine a rabbit – if its mouth is turned towards you, looking sideways, it cannot see in front of it. If it wants to see you, it has to turn its head 90°. Fish lack tear glands or eyelids – they cannot close their eyes or cry.

The coloration of fish depends mainly on environmental conditions, behavior, and the day-night cycle. Fish display various colors; they come in all shades, but this is partly due to the limited light penetrating the water compared to dry land. Fish can change their color, which we can observe in our aquariums – however, it’s species-specific. Nocturnal coloration can differ from daytime coloration. Usually, it loses contrast, and the fish appear darker. Sometimes the change is so significant that beginner aquarists may confuse their fish. Fish can also change color when sick – not just darkening but also fading. Fish exhibit more beautiful and contrasting colors during breeding, when in good condition, displaying in groups, in front of potential mates, etc., if not stressed. Coloration also depends on age – young individuals are often similarly colored, but during maturity, males may show different colors while females remain more or less the same. Diet also influences the coloration of fish. It’s interesting that sweet pepper, which contains a lot of the natural pigment carotene, is used to enhance the colors of fish drawings.

I want to emphasize that fish in pet stores are not colored as well as in nature or after some time with an aquarist. The reason is simple – in the store, they are under constant stress in a public environment. So, if you are ever disappointed when you look at literature and like a species that doesn’t look as nice in the store, know that if you provide it with quality conditions, it will soon color up beautifully. Conversely, many times you may like fish that you buy, and over time, they lose their original colors. In the worst case, they were injected with some dye or were enhanced” with a diet containing high doses of color enhancers like astaxanthin or carotene. Of course, sometimes there is nothing wrong, just a change in color due to different nutrition. On the contrary, with proper feeding, you can achieve colors on your fish that you hadn’t observed before.

Sexual dimorphism

Some fish species are characterized by more significant external differences between the sexes, while others have fewer or none at all. Nevertheless, genders are distinguished by internal physical differences. External differences include mainly coloration. Males are almost always more brightly colored; their patterns are richer and more contrasting. In some species, such as red neon tetras, discus, angelfish, the coloration of both sexes is almost identical, while in others, differences are noticeable. Fish typically don’t differ much in body shape by gender. However, concerning differentiation, coloration is often difficult to assess, and the shape of fins, the entire body, is more conclusive. In cases where genders differ in shape, e.g., fin shape, body length, mouth shape, belly shape, etc., there are many, but they are more challenging to identify because differences are often subtle but clearer than coloration. Females often have more rounded dorsal fins; males have more angular ones, sometimes with spots. Females usually have plumper, fuller bellies than males. The dorsal fin of males is usually more massive and more contrasting. Males are stronger and usually grow to larger lengths. Significant dimorphism is evident in the case of guppies (Poecilia reticulata), where both sexes differ greatly in body shape and coloration. Males are smaller, slimmer, and much more colorful, while females are often completely colorless.

Poecila reticulata Peters, 1859 patrí do podčeľade Poecilinae, do čeľade Poecillidae, radu , triedy Actinopterigii. Synonymá:  Peters, 1859 De Filippi, 1861 Günther, 1866; Girardinus guppii Günther, 1866 Jordan et Gilbert, 1883 Jordan, 1887; Acanthophacelus reticulatus Eigenmann, 1907 Eigenmann, 1910 Boulenger, 1912 Boulenger, 1912 Langer, 1913 Regan, 1913 Milewski, 1920.

Existuje množstvo tvarových a farebných foriem P. reticulata. Pomer pohlaví odporúčam 3:1 a viac v prospech samičiek. , labyrintky – napr.  ryby – napr.  partipentazona.

Niektorí  pridávajú do akvárií, kde chovajú gupky soľ. Najmä tí, ktorí chovajú gupky bez dna a bez rastlín. Gupky majú relatívne dlhé chvosty a často preto viac trpia rôznymi chorobami.

Mrazené krmivo tohto typu stačí namočiť do akvária a párkrát s ním rozvíriť hladinu a ryby nakŕmite.

Takýmto požiadavkám vyhovie Artemia salina, a nálevník . Akonáhle sa dá rozlíšiť , mlaď rozdeľte podľa pohlavia. Samčekovia pohlavne dospievajú vo veku dvoch mesiacov, samičky o mesiac neskôr. Samičky so samcami dajte dokopy vtedy, ak chcete, aby sa spolu párili.

Poecilia reticulata Peters, 1859 belongs to the subfamily Poecilinae, the family Poecillidae, the order Cyprinodontiformes, and the class Actinopterigii. The Slovak name is živorodka dúhová. The name gupka dúhová is also used. It belongs to livebearers. It is a generally known species of aquarium fish. Probably everyone in Slovakia has encountered the national name gupky. Often their name is distorted to gubky, guby, and similar, even among experts – which only indicates their great popularity. Another common name for guppies is pávie očko. This beautiful name originates from the natural form of P. reticulata, which has a dark spot on the body, usually oriented towards the upper edge of the caudal fin.

The original distribution is in Venezuela, but today its range extends to the eastern Amazon, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, northern Brazil, and Guyana – the Orinoco River basin, and guppies can now be found in Australia, Cuba, Hawaii, Southeast Asia, eastern and southern Africa, South America up to the northern United States, Russia, southern Spain, Greece, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, among others. A more comprehensive list is provided by FishBase. The species P. reticulata has adapted to its environment and is increasingly showing its original natural form. When I compare wild guppies from Venezuela with those caught in Brazil, I see a clear dominance of the original genetic makeup. Wild nature wins once again. Guppies are found where the water is warm, usually in thermal springs. I know they are found in the area of Slovnaft, I’ve heard about several other occurrences, and I know they are in thermal ponds in Piešťany.

In nature, the male reaches 3.5 cm, the female 6 cm. They live an average of 8 – 12 months. P. reticulata is characterized by significant sexual dimorphism. The male is much more colorful, smaller in size, slimmer, and has a gonopodium. The gonopodium is the male reproductive organ and is a modification of the 3rd to 5th ray of the anal fin. The female is more oval, larger in adulthood, has a normal anal fin, and has a gravid spot on the abdominal part of the body. The basic color of both sexes is gray. Guppy is a very friendly fish, usually swimming in the middle and lower part of the aquarium. If you keep a large number of guppies in one tank, they group together in the entire water column. If you feed them with your hand in the aquarium, guppies curiously and fearlessly lick your fingers. Catching guppies with a net is also interesting because they are often caught too easily – if you want to catch just one, it’s easy to end up with 20 in the net. Simply catching a guppy in a net among a hundred others is a problem. The more there are, the more curious and fearless they become.

The breeding of guppies is widespread worldwide, perhaps because they are one of the most variable species of fish kept in freshwater aquariums, not only in terms of color but also in shape. There are many morphological and color forms of P. reticulata. Since guppies have always been and still are a challenge for aquarists, there have been significant changes not only in their appearance but also in the requirements for breeding. Keeping guppies was once trouble-free. You may have heard aquarists and acquaintances say that keeping guppies was never a problem and that it cannot be a problem today. The guppies available for purchase in pet stores or from breeders today can be described as delicate fish. Their demands differ significantly from their relatives in the past. Today’s guppies are heavily bred and have become less resilient. In the past, guppies were not delicate at all, but today it is different. It often happens to breeders that they buy some guppies, add them to their tank, and first the new ones perish, and later their old ones do too. If you want to keep guppies, it is ideal to find a path to a breeder who maintains a clean lineage. I recommend a sex ratio of 3:1 or more in favor of females. Males often do not give females peace, so it is suitable to keep more females than males. Guppies tolerate a wide range of water parameters. I consider the ideal breeding values to be a temperature of 22 – 27°C, 10 – 20°dGH, pH 7.5. They are capable, especially in adulthood, if they do not belong to delicate types, of tolerating high salinity. The profitability of guppies in Piešťany ponds is proof of this. Piešťany ponds are fed by water rich in sulfur and other minerals. People occasionally release various fish into the ponds, but only Poecilia sphenops and Poecilia reticulata survive. These are species that are resistant to this factor. Some breeders have managed to acclimate guppies gradually even to seawater. They keep guppies in seawater as feed. If you have ambitions to participate in competitions, it is advisable to keep guppies in aquariums with plants because they feel and look better in them. Therefore, breeding guppies requires more aquariums. Ideally, each form should have its own aquarium, especially for adult fish, young, and adolescent individuals. Other livebearers such as platies, swordtails, mollies, tetras, and Corydoras catfish are suitable for keeping with guppies in a community tank. Larger cichlid species, such as angelfish, labyrinth fish, such as bettas, and carp-like fish, such as Puntius partipentazona, are not suitable for them.

Some breeders add salt to the aquariums where they keep guppies, especially those who keep guppies without substrate and without plants. In any case, guppies feel good in salty water and better resist disease. The recommended dose of salt for them is two tablespoons per 40 liters of water. Guppies should be gradually accustomed to salt, and it should only be used if it does not bother other fish. Guppies have relatively long tails and often suffer from various diseases. And since guppies eat a lot and produce a lot of waste, water and bottom cleanliness must be maintained. One of my friends calls guppies and swordtails a combine” because of this feature. Guppies rest at the bottom at night, their tails touching the bottom, and they are at risk of infection. The bottom must not contain much detritus, effective filtration is a good prerequisite for your healthy fish. Guppies literally love fresh water, and if you change the water very often, they grow very quickly and are in excellent condition. Continuous water exchange is ideal.

Guppies are omnivorous. Suitable food includes threadfin, mosquito larvae, cyclops, moina, artemia, ideally live. Frozen food of this type is sufficient to soak in the aquarium and swirl a few times to feed the fish. If you want the female guppies to give birth well, provide them with larvae of the black mosquito, the one that sometimes makes human life so unpleasant – the Culex pipiens mosquito. Guppies are herbivorous, suitable food includes spirulina, blanched spinach, lettuce, etc. A suitable food for young growing guppies is infusoria. They readily accept, for example, non-flying fruit flies Drosophila melanogaster, and it is precisely insects that are most forgotten when feeding fish in general. Of course, microorganisms are suitable, as well as grindal worms, less so dry flake foods offered in pet stores.

Breeding guppies is simple; often it can happen in aquarists’ tanks against their will. Males, often even three at once, persistently chase the female, who usually ignores their activity at first. But when the female agrees, the male copulates using the gonopodium. The female is able to store sperm and give birth in the next 3 – 4 subsequent broods. Therefore, if you want to preserve the lineage – the shape and color of the parents, you need to prevent the mixing of genetic material. Pregnant females can be isolated in breeding traps, for example, those available in stores or those you can make from garden mesh baskets. It is enough to stitch the mesh and attach the basket to the aquarium. Or you can get inspired and make a breeding trap using a PET bottle and mesh. Of course, you can let the female give birth in a common tank and later catch the young. Sometimes guppies eat their offspring, but if you want offspring, it is good to have the aquarium well planted with plants. Guppies are capable of giving birth every month – the period lasts about 28 days. The average number of offspring is 40 individuals – ranging from 30 to 70, sometimes even more than 100 offspring. Sometimes it happens that the female only gives birth to a few young. Make sure that if you move the female before giving birth, you do not drastically change the water parameters, especially to avoid raising the temperature. Increased temperature could result in premature birth – insufficiently developed individuals or even dead ones. The female is exhausted after giving birth; it is common for her health to deteriorate during this time.

What is a much bigger problem is raising the young. As Ivan Vyslúžil says, A schoolchild can breed a guppy, but only a breeder can raise it.” Newborn guppy fry are relatively large fish fry – reaching about 1 cm. They initially grow slower, but after two weeks of good feeding, their growth accelerates. Just like with other fish, it is suitable to feed guppies diligently until they reach two centimeters in size. The best way to feed such young guppies is as often as possible and in small portions. Of course, live food that moves throughout the water column of the aquarium is ideal. These demands are met by the saltwater brine shrimp – Artemia salina, and infusoria – Paramecium caudatum. As soon as the gender can be distinguished, divide the fry by gender. Males reach sexual maturity at the age of two months, females one month later. Put females with males together only if you want them to mate. If it is not necessary, avoid sibling mating above all.

Guppies often suffer from diseases that we cannot diagnose – they often perish without apparent cause and very quickly. One of the serious diseases affecting these fish is fin rot caused by bacteria Pseudomonas, Aeromonas, and others. Another disease is mycobacteriosis, which is very difficult to treat. Ichthyophthiriasis – known among aquarists as white spot disease – is a less serious disease.

P. reticulata certainly deserves its significant place in aquaristics and holds it, as guppies are the reason for the European Championships, World Championships, and other international and national competitions and exhibitions. There is an international organization, IKGH (Internationale Kuratorium Guppy-Hochzucht), which brings together and coordinates individual organizations dealing with the breeding of P. reticulata. Competitions are held according to the developed IHS standard. Typically, competitions involve trios of males, but pairs are increasingly making their mark. Categories are determined by the shape of the caudal fin: triangle, circle, double sword, lower sword, upper sword, lyre, fan, flag, shovel, flame, needle, sherpa.
