Fountain of St. George and the Dragon

According to legend, George was an officer in the Roman army. One day, he came to a town terrorized by a dragon. Initially, the dragon was satisfied with a daily supply of livestock, but later, it began demanding young girls. Desperate, the people selected victims by drawing lots. George arrived in the town when the lot fell on the king’s daughter. He killed the dragon with his spear and became a symbol of a knight triumphing over evil (bratislava.sk).

Először a sárkány a mindennapi marhahús-szállítmánnyal megelégedett, később azonban fiatal lányokat kezdett követelni. A kétségbeesett emberek a sorsolás útján választották az áldozatokat. György akkor érkezett a városba, amikor a király leánya esett ki a sorsolásból. Megölte a sárkányt lándzsájával, és a lovagot szimbólummá vált, aki legyőzi a gonoszt (bratislava.sk).

Rolandova fontána pred Starou radnicou – kamenná renesančná fontána s kruhovou nádržou ozdobenou maskarónmi a so stredovým pilierom na ktorom stojí postava stredovekého rytiera v brnení.

Old Town Hall

In the 14th century, there was a house with a tower on the site of today’s Old Town Hall, built by the mayor Jakub. The Old Town Hall was formed in the 15th century by merging several neighboring bourgeois houses on the Main Square, and over the centuries, it underwent several reconstructions. After the earthquake in 1599, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style, and the town hall tower was reconstructed in the Baroque style after a fire in the 18th century. In 1912, a rear wing was added in the Neo-Renaissance style from the courtyard side and in the Neo-Gothic style from Primaciálne Square. The town hall tower served a defensive purpose. When looking at the tower from the Main Square, you will find several interesting features – on the plinth, there is a plaque with the date February 1850, reminding of the water level during a flood when the Danube overflowed its banks. To the left of the Gothic window, at the level of the 1st floor, there is a walled cannonball reminding of the attacks by Napoleon’s armies in 1809. On the corner of the tower stands a statue of the Madonna from 1676. From the tower balcony, decisions of the parliament, royal decrees, and city council regulations were announced in the past. On the facade to the right of the Renaissance arcade, you can notice a fresco of an old man – a usurer from 1533. The City Museum is one of the oldest museums in Central Europe, founded in 1868. In the courtyard corner, there is an entrance to the exhibition of feudal justice and the history of the city. Concerts and theater performances take place on the Renaissance arcade courtyard in the summer (bratislava.sk).

Roland Fountain in front of the Old Town Hall – a stone Renaissance fountain with a circular basin adorned with mascarons and a central pillar on which stands the figure of a medieval knight in armor. The statue depicts the legendary guardian of municipal rights, Roland. In the lower part of the pillar, there is a smaller shell-shaped basin into which water sprays from the mouths of fish held by figurines – the so-called putti. Water was originally brought to the fountain through wooden pipes. The fountain was created for practical reasons at a time when there was a noticeable shortage of water in the city, as a direct response to a major fire that broke out during the coronation celebration of Maximilian and devastated a large part of the homes in the city. It is assumed that the author depicted the face of the then ruler on the statue of Roland (bratislava.sk).

Altes Rathaus

A városháza tornya védelmi célt szolgált.

A szobor Rolandot, a városi jogok őrzőjét ábrázolja. Az oszlop alsó részén egy kisebb kagylós medence található, amelybe víz spriccel a putti nevű halalakok szájából. A vizet eredetileg fa csöveken keresztül vezették a kúthoz.

Blue Church – Church of St. Elizabeth

The single-nave Secessionist Blue Church of St. Elizabeth with a cylindrical tower was built between 1910 and 1913 according to the design of Budapest architect Edmund Lechner. The church was constructed by the Pittel and Brausewetter company, which pioneered the use of reinforced concrete structures in the church’s architecture, supporting both the church vault and the organ loft. The church’s floor plan follows traditional styles, incorporating many elements borrowed from them. However, a completely new feature is the ornate plasterwork that imitates oriental ornamentation. The central element of the church’s front facade is a mosaic featuring the figure of St. Elizabeth holding roses in her cloak. Roses are also a fundamental element of the interior ornamentation. With this construction, Lechner created a new Hungarian national architectural style. The dedication of the Church of St. Elizabeth also reflected Hungarian national sentiment. St. Elizabeth was a native Hungarian saint from the royal Arpad dynasty (likely born in Bratislava Castle), and the church was intended to serve as a symbolic mausoleum for Empress Elizabeth (Sissi), the wife of Franz Joseph I (bratislava.sk).

A templom alaprajza a hagyományos stílusokat követi, sok elemet kölcsönöz tőlük. A rózsák a belső díszítés alapvető elemei is. A Szent Erzsébet-templom felszentelése is tükrözte a magyar nemzeti érzelmeket. Pôvodne na mieste SND stálo tzv. Stavovské divadlo postavené v rokoch 17741776. Budova slúžila obecenstvu s viacerými neskoršími úpravami až do roku 1884, teda viac než sto rokov.

Originally, at the location of the Slovak National Theatre (SND), there stood the so-called Stavovské Theatre, built from 1774 to 1776. The building served the audience with several later modifications until 1884, more than a hundred years. After unfortunate fires in theater buildings in other cities, especially after the Vienna theater fire in 1881, the city of Prešporok (now Bratislava) decided to build a new theater building. It was constructed from 1885 to 1886. The operation in the new building opened on September 22, 1886, with a performance of the opera Bánk Bán by composer Ferenc Erkel, who himself conducted the first performance. Even after World War I, performances were held in the new building in both Hungarian and German. Gradually, actors from the Slovak National Theatre also took to its stage. Throughout the theater’s long history, it hosted the most significant personalities of the global opera scene, including F. Shalyapin, P. Mascagni, R. Strauss, G. Filip, M. Poppová, who performed on the most famous world stages (bratislava.sk).

The Ganymede Fountain in front of the Slovak National Theatre dates back to 1888. The eagle with the boy represents Zeus transformed into a bird of prey, carrying the beautiful boy Ganymede to Olympus, the abode of the gods. The perimeter of the stone basin of the fountain is adorned with turtles, frogs, and crayfish, supported by small figures of four children holding four types of Danube fish – carp, catfish, pikeperch, and pike. Water sprouts from the fish papules and falls into the basin (bratislava.sk).

Fokozatosan a Szlovák Nemzeti Színház társulatának színészei is megjelentek a színpadon. A színház hosszú története során a globális operaszínház legjelentősebb személyiségei léptek fel itt, köztük F. Salyapin, P. Mascagni, R. Strauss, G. Filip, M. Freni, P. Cappuccilli, R. Reznikov, J. Obrazcovová, és olyan táncosok, mint M. Fonteyn, A. Alonso, V. Vasiliev, és sokan mások. Jelenleg opera és balett működik itt. Sok jelentős operaszínházi személyiséget nevelt ki, például Peter Dvorský, J. Kundlák, J. Galla, E. Jenisová, E. Grúberová, L. Poppová, akik a világ legismertebb színpadain léptek fel (bratislava.sk).

A Ganymede-kút a Szlovák Nemzeti Színház előtt 1888-ból származik.

We had the aquarium visit scheduled for 5:00 PM. By then, we were already a bit tired, having seen enough of the aquarium since morning. When we spotted the aquarium from the bus, we thought we would explore it in 30 minutes. We were very wrong. First of all, shortly after entering, we realized it was a bit of a labyrinth. Hallways, rooms twisted around, inside there was a plethora of fish and beautiful fish. There were even some things that were rare for me. For example, Tanganyikan cichlids, several species of wild livebearers. Whoever takes care of these fish surely has a preference, especially for American cichlids. There were plenty of them, maybe around 200 species estimated. The stands with fish near the entrance were purposefully built, probably homemade. I think we all felt very comfortable there, and the hospitality of the hosts definitely helped, as they diligently served us beer, cola, and other drinks in two-deciliter containers with a smile on their faces. Outside, the owner had tanks full of koi and other cold-water fish in the yard. Besides that, I saw some birds and rodents there. From the shop, I had the feeling that it also functions partially as a breeding ground because there were many young fish in the tanks, and adult fish of the same species were in other tanks. I didn’t see completely young fish and fry tanks. I assume they were further in the yard or somewhere nearby. Essentially, this is how I imagine having a shop. Having a breeding ground and a shop in one place is an idea that I have also considered. After leaving the shop, we boarded the bus and headed back home. I will definitely remember this trip to Duisburg-Cyprus.

In Banská Bystrica, at Majerská cesta 98, there used to be an aquarium store called Akvaristika operated by the company Akvaprodukt. It was an aquarium store that was located in Dolná. Established in 2002, it focused exclusively on aquariums. The total volume of the tanks was approximately 5,000 liters, housing a minimum of 70 species of tropical and pond fish. The aquarium store also had an online shop. They set up aquariums and always had a good selection of livebearers, African cichlids from the Malawi and Tanganyika lakes. They offered a variety of aquarium and pond plants, shrimp, feeds, equipment, medications, and fish food. Richard himself is a fish judge. The aquarium store in Dolná provided a broad range of products, and I recommend paying it a visit.

Whether the store still operates in 2024, I do not know.

ZOO Zajac – chovateľský hypermarket v Duisburgu

Hits: 4183

Na prvý októbrový víkend v roku 2008, sme si my, partia z Bratislavy, z Brna a Žďáru nad Sázavou naplánovali akvaristickú lahôdku – návštevu nemeckého Duisburgu, konkrétne troch miest – pomerne známeho ZOO Zajac, veľtrhu Zierfische und Aquarium, kde sa konal 7. ročník Diskus Championat a jednej peknej akvaristiky Hobby ZOO Tillmann. Asi 42 akvaristov bolo ochotných merať cestu do Duisburgu.

On the first weekend of October 2008, our group from Bratislava, Brno, and Žďár nad Sázavou planned an aquarium delight – a visit to the German city of Duisburg, specifically three places – the relatively well-known Zajac Zoo, the Zierfische und Aquarium fair, where the 7th edition of the Diskus Championat took place, and one beautiful aquarium store, Hobby ZOO Tillmann. The event was organized by the Brno club Cyperus, and thank goodness for that. We had arranged transportation with our own” bus from Brno, accommodation, and a program. The Bratislava group consisted of 8 people with two cars. Early in the morning on October 3rd, we headed to Brno, where the connector” – Franta Csefay was waiting for us. He settled us, and thanks to him and his presence, we easily moved to the bus. Our direction was clear – Duisburg. More than 1000 km of travel awaited us. The journey took 12 hours, but you can imagine that entertainment was taken care of. We traveled during the day, and in Žďár, we picked up our friends from Žďár. According to my estimate, we almost filled the entire bus; about 3 – 4 seats remained vacant. About 42 aquarists were willing to make the trip to Duisburg. We successfully arrived in the evening. After accommodation, many of us went to the city. Because the question arose: What to do with the started evening? Our surprise was significant – Duisburg was calm. We couldn’t understand why Duisburg in the evening was deserted. There were few people on the wide boulevards. In restaurants, many of us sat alone for more than an hour. We left the hotel around 9 PM. In the morning, after breakfast, a rich program awaited us. We started with a visit to Zajac Zoo.

Zajac Zoo could be described as a smaller breeding TESCO. By smaller,” I mean, for example, one floor of the TESCO supermarket in the center of Bratislava. Only breeding supplies” were located on a relatively large area. The noise in the parking lot in front of Zajac Zoo was significant. I remind you that it was a working day after 10 AM. Inside, many people were present, and in the afternoon, when we returned here once again, literally crowds. In front of the entrance, there were a few stalls and refreshment shops, perhaps some souvenirs. Inside, I was surprised, for example, that the same type of goods was in several places, possibly at different prices. Water plants were in three, maybe four places. I had the optical impression that they were also in the same tanks, equally beautiful and species-wise very similar. I liked it; I think Mr. Zajac knows what he is doing. The customer probably has the opportunity to choose whether to focus on price or a trusted brand, and it’s done decently – the goods do not see” each other. In Zajac Zoo, I saw many products that are not so accessible to us, but since I wanted to capture things with a camera, I didn’t pay much attention to shopping. Just before leaving, I bought four beautiful thin roots that I had been looking for for about 3 years. They will beautify the planted aquarium. From Zajac Zoo, we moved on to the Zierfische und Aquarium fair.

Wasserpflanzen waren an drei, vielleicht vier Stellen.

The name RIZLACI” for the aquarium shop in Banská Bystrica has an interesting origin. It is a combination of the names Richard and Zlatica, the owners of the shop, and their shared surname, Cirák. Located at SNP Square No. 20 in Banská Bystrica, the entrance to the shop is from Lazovná Street, approximately 60 meters from the square. Despite its short history, as it first opened its doors on November 6, 2006, the shop has made a mark with its area of 89 m², primarily focusing on the sale of aquarium fish and aquatic plants.

Richard, the owner, has been involved in this hobby for almost 30 years, dedicating himself to it with occasional breaks. The shop offers a wide selection of fish from around the world. In recent times, the shop has also been hosting akvastreks,” where experienced and less experienced aquarists come together to share their knowledge and experiences in the field of aquatics.

The main room features a sales counter displaying various types of granulated, flake, and frozen fish food, both in bulk and original packaging. Additionally, terrariums with different species of snakes and other terrarium animals are showcased. The diverse food selection includes products from reputable brands such as TROPICAL, SAK, and DAJANA. Frozen foods are also available in full supply. Notably, the shop offers live food such as worms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. A glass section of the sales counter displays treats for dogs and cats, as well as supplies for aquarists and terrarists. Behind the counter are three larger metal stands holding various aquarium filters, air pumps, heaters, roots, stones, and ceramics for aquarium decoration. The shop also caters to the needs of reptile, rodent, bird, dog, and cat enthusiasts.

In the left part of the room, metal stands with 50 aquariums, the largest having a volume of 550 liters, are neatly arranged. Additionally, there is an anticorrosive tub” with a capacity of up to 1000 liters, housing various colorful species of carp, koi carp, sturgeons, mainly intended for outdoor garden ponds. The second room houses different types of terrariums, aquariums, and birdcages, along with larger terraria containing various reptiles and cages housing different species of ornamental birds.

The plant selection mainly consists of offerings from Aqua-DAHO, both in emersed and submersed forms. Popular species include Anubias, Cryptocoryne, and Crinum. Medications in aquaristics are primarily from the SERA company.

Richard’s enthusiasm for fish is evident, and it is reflected in his shop. The tanks are stocked with a wide variety of fish, including some not commonly found in typical pet stores. Richard was known to me even before he established Akvaristika RIZLACI.” I knew him as an enthusiast who actively sought fish from all corners of the world. He seems to have remained true to this passion because his shop always offers interesting finds for both seasoned and novice hobbyists.

It’s unfortunate that the storefront doesn’t exude a welcoming vibe. The facade against the city wall is worn and frankly unattractive. Another improvement that would enhance the tanks is a background, as the aquariums in the stands are currently without one. This addition would make the fish and plants stand out, giving the entire setup a more cohesive appearance.

During my recent visit to the EXOTIC Show in Banská Bystrica, I noticed that Richard had added backgrounds to the aquariums. The fish are visibly in good condition whenever I visit RIZLACI. Akvaristika RIZLACI is fascinating to me. It’s not the typical polished store meticulously planned to the last detail but rather a work in progress. An enthusiastic aquarist should find their way there, and I believe that thanks to the interesting and healthy fish and the staff’s approach, they will return frequently.

Unfortunately, Akvaristika has ended in the meantime, but those who embodied it are still great.
