Od prvej polovice 9. storočia tu bolo opevnené stredisko so zrubovými obydliami, palácom, predrománskou trojloďovou bazilikou, cintorínom a hospodárskymi objektmi. Opevnenie vydržalo do konca 14. storočia, kedy ho nahradili kamenné gotické hradby (wikipedia.sk).
Sídli tu Historické a Hudobné múzeum Slovenského národného múzea. Hrad tvoria rôzne časti: Viedenská, Žigmundova, Mikulášska a Leopoldova brána, čestné nádvorie, vyhliadkový bastión, palác, západná terasa, severné hradby, bašta Luginsland, hradná vináreň, juhozápadný bastión, základy veľkomoravskej baziliky z 9. storočia a kostola sv.
Bratislava Castle is a significant landmark in Bratislava, and the first written mention of Bratislava in the Salzburg Annals dates back to 907 in connection with the Battle of Bavorov and the Hungarians. The castle hill was settled in the late Stone Age, with the first known inhabitants being Celts (bratislava.sk). Traces of the oldest settlement date back 4500 years to the Eneolithic period (Boleráz group). Although the existence of a fortified settlement is presumed, direct evidence has not been found. From the Hallstatt period, dwellings dug into the rock substratum, called earthworks, were discovered on the eastern side (wikipedia.sk). From the La Tène period, the time of the Celtic civilization’s flourishing, there are traces of oppida and Celtic coins, biatecs (Štefanovičová, 1975). From the 9th to the 11th century, processed stones, fragments of inscriptions, and remains of bricks marked with pegs from the 14th Roman legion were found on the eastern terrace of the castle. These findings indicate the presence of the Roman ethnicity on the castle acropolis in the 2nd to 3rd century. It was undoubtedly an exceptional location from a strategic perspective and had great importance for military garrison placement (the original structures were likely part of a military station), especially during the Roman-Germanic military contacts (e.g., Marcomannic Wars). Slavic settlement marked the turn of the 5th and 6th centuries. From the first half of the 9th century, a fortified center with log houses, a palace, a pre-Romanesque triple-naved basilica, a cemetery, and economic buildings existed here. The fortifications lasted until the end of the 14th century when they were replaced by stone Gothic walls (wikipedia.sk).
For four centuries, the northern border of the Roman Empire – the Limes Romanus – ran along the Danube. In the 9th century, the Slavs built a strong fortress here, which became a significant center of the Great Moravian Empire (bratislava.sk), both ecclesiastical and secular, encompassing a broader territory. The princely retinue and ecclesiastical dignitaries resided there (wikipedia.sk). Bratislava Castle is a national cultural monument and currently, its first floor serves for representative purposes of the Slovak National Council, while other spaces house collections of the Slovak National Museum – the Treasures of Ancient Times and the Historical Museum (bratislava.sk). The present name of the castle derives from the name Brezaluspurch, mentioned in the Salzburg Annals in 907. In 1042, Henri-Manni Augiensis Chronicon mentions Brezeburg, in the Altai Annals in 1052, Preslavvaspurch, and in 1108, Bresburg, from which the current German Pressburg (wikipedia.sk) originated. All these names have their origin in the name Braslav or Preslav. It could have been a member of a significant noble family (Jozef Hlinka, 1982). The German historian Aventinus mentions Wratisslaburgium, named after Vratislav, who repaired the castle in 805. Another designation is Castrum Bosan or Bassa, Possen, later Poson, Posonium, probably giving rise to the Hungarian Pozsony (wikipedia.sk).
The Crown Tower dates back to the 13th century. During the rule of Sigismund of Luxembourg (1387 – 1437), the castle underwent Gothic reconstruction. After 1526, it became the residence of Hungarian kings. Under Maria Theresa (1740 – 1780), the castle transformed into a luxurious Baroque residence. In 1811, it burned down, and reconstruction began only in 1953. Today, the castle is managed by the Office of the National Council of the Slovak Republic. The Historical and Music Museums of the Slovak National Museum are located here. The castle consists of various parts: Vienna, Sigismund, Nicholas, and Leopold Gates, the honorary courtyard, the lookout bastion, the palace, the western terrace, the northern walls, the Luginsland Bastion, the castle winery, the southwest bastion, the foundations of the Great Moravian basilica from the 9th century, and the Church of St. Savior from the 11th century, the cistern (Source: Information board).
In the courtyard of the castle palace, as well as on the northern terrace of the area, archaeologists from the City Institute for the Protection of Monuments found remains of unique architecture dating back to the 1st century BC. The discovery included gold coins with the inscription Biatec. Historians agree that it is the most representative structure north of the Alps from the late La Tène period. The castle apparently housed the acropolis of one of the most significant Celtic fortifications – an oppidum in Central Europe. “These objects were built with Roman construction techniques and are a unique find not only in terms of their age but also their quality. They preserved the original interior plaster and cast slabs with stone decoration, which have no parallel in Slovakia,” says Štassel (Kráková). Archaeological research from 2008 changes the view of Bratislava’s Celtic past; the castle was the seat of a Celtic prince named Braslav, who called upon craftsmen from Rome to modify and build the residence according to Roman knowledge. In addition to Roman ceramics, amphorae, bells, and the gold and silver treasure of the prince, the discovery included the first gold coin named Nonnos (Danihelová).
The castle hill is the first hill of the Little Carpathians. Bratislavans, as well as non-locals, enjoy visiting Bratislava Castle. There is a nice view of the surrounding area from there. The part behind the main building, towards the Old Town, is full of greenery, with a relatively large and flat space where quite a few people gather, especially in the summer. Being in the center, the castle is very easily and quickly accessible. Exhibitions, concerts, theatrical performances, and various social events take place at the castle, and many events have their beginnings here.
A latén korból keleti oldalán megfigyelhetők a kőzetbe mélyedt kunyhók maradványai (wikipedia.sk). A kelta civilizáció virágkora, a latén korból oppida nyomai és kelta érmék, a Biatecs (Štefanovičová, 1975). A 9. és 11. századból származó dolgozott kőzetek, feliratmaradványok és a XIV. római légió jelzéseivel ellátott téglamaradványokat találtak a vár keleti teraszán. Ezek a leletek a római nép jelenlétét igazolják a vár akropoliszán a 2.
Négy évszázadon keresztül a Duna alkotta a Római Birodalom északi határát – a Limes Romanus‑t. A szlávok az 9. században megerősített erődöt építettek, amely jelentős központtá vált a Nagy-Morva Birodalomnak (bratislava.sk), mind szellemi, mind világi szempontból egy nagyobb terület számára. Itt élt a hercegi család és a keresztény egyház méltóságosa (wikipedia.sk). A bratislavai vár nemzeti kulturális emlék, és jelenleg a Szlovák Nemzeti Tanács első emeletét a Szlovák Nemzeti Múzeum gyűjteményeinek reprezentatív célokra használja – Az ősi korok kincsei és Történeti múzeum kiállításai (bratislava.sk). A vár mai neve a 907-es Brezalauspurc név alapján származik a szalzburgi évkönyvekből. 1042-ben Henri-Manni Augiensis Chroniconban Brezeburgként említik, 1052-ben az Altheus-análokban Preslavvaspurchként, 1108-ban Bresburgként, ami a mai német Pozsonyt eredményezte (wikipedia.sk). Ezek a nevek mind Braslav vagy Preslav név eredetét jelzik. Valószínűleg egy jelentős nemesi család tagja lehetett (Jozef Hlinka, 1982). A német történész Aventinus Wratisslaburgiumot mond, Vratislav alapján, aki a várat 805-ben javította meg. Más néven Castrum Bosan, vagy Bassa, Possen, később Poson, Posonium, ami valószínűleg a magyar Pozsony elnevezéshez vezetett (wikipedia.sk).
A Korona torony a 13. századból származik. Luxemburgi Zsigmond uralkodása alatt (1387 – 1437) a vár gótikus átalakuláson ment keresztül. 1526 után Magyarország királyainak lakhelye. Mária Terézia (1740 – 1780) idején a vár luxus barokk rezidenciává változott. 1811-ben leégett, a helyreállítás csak 1953-ban kezdődött. A várat jelenleg a Szlovák Köztársaság Nemzeti Tanácsának Hivatala kezeli. Itt található a Szlovák Nemzeti Múzeum Kincsei a régi idők és a Történeti múzeum kiállításai. A várat különböző részek alkotják: bécsi, Zsigmond, Mikulás és Lipót kapu, tiszteletbeli udvar, kilátó bástya, palota, nyugati terasz, északi falak, Luginsland bástya, várborozda, délnyugati bástya, a 9. századi nagy-morva bazilika alapjai és a 11. századi Szent Megváltó templom, ciszterna (Forrás: Informačná tabuľa).
A várpalota udvarán, valamint az épületegyüttes északi teraszán a városi műemlékvédelmi intézet régészei egyedülálló 1. századi építészeti maradványokra bukkantak. A lelet részét képezte a Biatec feliratú aranyérmék is.
A várhegy a Kis-Kárpátok első dombja. Innen egész szép kilátás nyílik a környező területekre. A váron kiállítások, nyáron koncertek, színházi előadások, különböző társadalmi események is zajlanak.

Chránil ho systém priekop a ochranný múr s rohovými a dvojitými vežami.
In Petronell, near Bratislava, there is a Roman camp located in Austria that is a remnant and reconstruction of the actual Roman camp Carnuntum. It features demonstrations of the societal life of that era, technical solutions for daily living in dwellings, baths, and many other interesting aspects.
The Roman metropolis Carnuntum was situated on the Amber Road, along the Roman border – Limes Romanus between Vienna and Bratislava, at the intersection of trade routes, the Amber Road, and the Danube route. It is the largest archaeological site in Austria (vinokarpat.sk). Systematic excavations have been ongoing since 1885. The word “Carnuntum” is likely derived from “Kar” or “Karn” – stone or pile of rocks (Wikipedia.cs).
Carnuntum evolved from the 1st half of the 1st century AD until the end of Roman presence in 433. The estimated population of Carnuntum is around 50,000. Before the Romans, Celts inhabited this area, followed by the Boii tribe in the 2nd century BC. In 6 BC, the Roman Tiberius founded a military base on the territory of the Celtic city Carnuntum, attacking the Marcomannic king Maroboduus. In 8 – 9 AD, Pannonia became a Roman province as Inferior Provincia Illyricum. After the defeat in the Teutoburg Forest (9 AD), Augustus decided to abandon further conquests north of the Danube, designating the Danube as the empire’s boundary. In the following period, Carnuntum had a crucial defensive function on the Danube. Under Emperor Claudius (41−54), a civilian town was also established. In 172 – 175, Marcus Aurelius fought against the Marcomanni and Quadi in Pannonia, staying in Carnuntum from 171 to 173. In 194, Carnuntum was elevated to a colony and received the name Colonia Septimia Aurelia Antoniniana Carnuntum (vinokarpat.sk).
About a kilometer west of present-day Bad Deutsch Altenburg, the 15th legion – Legio XV Apollinaris had a military camp. It was protected by a trench system and a defensive wall with corner and double towers, housing 5,000 to 6,000 soldiers. About a kilometer west of the military camp was the auxiliary legion camp – Castrum auxilii, built in the 2nd half of the 1st century and served a 500-member cavalry military garrison. Around the military camp, a settlement with solid wooden structures (canabae) was established, transforming into stone buildings during the 2nd century AD. Civilian population settled here, and this settlement spread over approximately 150 hectares. Emperor Hadrian granted urban rights to this urban settlement. Carnuntum gradually transformed into a significant trade metropolis (vinokarpat.sk).
The amphitheater in Petronell, with an area of 72 x 44 meters, was one of the largest in the Roman Empire. However, only 8,000 spectators could fit into the arena, and the tribune gives an idea of the original height of the structure. It is assumed that the southern tribune had a two-story and elegantly furnished lodge for the governor. There was one monumental gate on the east and west sides each, and at the western entrance, there was the Nemeseum – a small sanctuary dedicated to the goddess of fate and revenge, Diana Nemesis (Information board).
Jahrh
underts n. Chr. in Steinbauten umwandelten.

Kedysi tu žili Kelti, v rímskej dobe tu Rimania mali osadu Salvio Mansio (Wikipedia).
Medzi osobnosti mesta patrí česká kráľovná, manželka Přemysla Otakara I., Konštancia Uhorská, spisovateľ Valentín Balaša (Bálint Balassa) (Wikipedia).
Ostrihom is a city in Hungary located on the banks of the Danube, at the foothills of the Pilis Mountains, with an elevation of 105 meters above sea level (Peter Kaclík). Its Latin name is Strigonium, German name is Gran, and Hungarian name is Esztergom. The city covers an area of 100.35 km² and is home to 30,928 inhabitants (Wikipedia). Across the Danube on the opposite bank lies the town of Štúrovo. The two towns are connected by the Mária Valéria Bridge, which was reconstructed in 2001 (Karin Bogschová). The bridge was destroyed by the Germans during the war in 1944 (Wikipedia). The city center features buildings in Baroque, Rococo, and Classical styles. Thermal baths are located near the city center (Karin Bogschová).
In ancient times, the area was inhabited by Celts, and during the Roman era, the Romans established the settlement of Salvio Mansio (Wikipedia). In the 2nd century, a military camp called Solva stood here, with its suburb Anavum located in present-day Štúrovo. Romans launched expeditions against the Germans from this area, and Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius even stopped here and wrote the first book of his work “Meditations” (Jan Potůček). Around the year 500, Slavs arrived, naming the former Roman fortress Strěgom, signifying its guarding function. Ostrihom became one of the main fortifications of the Principality of Nitra and Great Moravia. In the early 10th century, the Magyars, ancient Hungarians, settled here, and the city became the residence of Grand Prince Geza. King Stephen I was born here, and he established the archbishopric and built the Basilica of St. Stephen on the site of an older church (Karin Bogschová). During the Mongol invasion in 1242, the city was conquered, but the castle remained intact. In 1543, the Turks occupied Ostrihom, and the archbishop moved to Bratislava for nearly 300 years, even though his official seat was in Trnava. Ostrihom served as the seat of the Ottoman Empire’s Beglerbeg – a district. From 1594 to 1605, unsuccessful battles were fought for the city, and it was nearly completely destroyed. During the Ottoman period, many Serbs settled in Ostrihom, gradually assimilating. The city was liberated by the armies of John III Sobieski and Charles V, Duke of Lorraine, in 1683. After the defeat of the Turks, it was resettled mainly by Slovaks, who assimilated over time (Wikipedia).
Medieval records mention seven churches on the castle hill. Approximately at the location of today’s basilica stood the Cathedral of St. Adalbert, built around 1010. Near the north tower of today’s basilica was the Church of St. Stephen the Protomartyr. Another church was the contemporary circular chapel of St. Stephen. Remains of St. Vitus Chapel were only recently discovered. The fifth is the castle chapel of St. Adalbert III in the Arpadian palace. In modern times, the Cathedral of Our Lady and St. Adalbert (bazilika-esztergom.hu) was built between 1822 and 1869 in a neoclassical style on the site of a medieval church (bazilika-esztergom.hu), which was destroyed in 1543 (Wikipedia). The basilica is the third-largest church in Europe, covering an area of 5,660 m² (wellnesstips.sk). It is 118 meters long, 49 meters wide, and the dome’s height is 71.5 meters. The columns supporting the tympanum are 57 meters high. The walls are 17 meters thick. The altarpiece inside, the largest single-canvas altarpiece in the world, was painted by Michelangelo Grigoletti (wellnesstips.sk). It measures 13 x 6.5 meters (esztergom.hu). The basilica’s upper floor houses the Archdiocesan Treasury, which contains a collection of medieval and more recent sacred objects, including the Renaissance Calvary of King Matthias (travelguide.sk). The Basilica – Cathedral of Our Lady and St. Adalbert began construction at the urging of Archbishop Alexander Rudnay (Wikipedia). Next to the basilica is the former Royal Palace with the Castle Museum. Archaeologists have uncovered a part of the medieval royal castle, which was destroyed by the Turks in 1543. The most valuable part of the castle complex is the Romanesque Royal Chapel with a rose window above the entrance. Its vault is among the oldest works in Central Europe (travelguide.sk). North of the column hall of the basilica is the statue of King St. Stephen on horseback (esztergom.hu).
In 1708, Ostrihom became a free royal city. In the early 19th century, the archbishop and chapter returned to the city. Ostrihom became the center of an archdiocese, with its territory mainly in Slovakia, attracting many Slovak nationalists, such as Ján Palárik and Andrej Kmeť (Wikipedia). Next to the basilica stands the former Royal Palace with the Castle Museum. The construction of old walls began in the 10th century (Ľubomír Motyčka). Besides, Ostrihom is home to the Christian Museum, which possesses rich and rare works of painting and sculpture. The Archdiocesan Library houses around 250,000 prints (Karin Bogschová). Among the city’s notable personalities are the Czech queen and wife of Přemysl Otakar I, Constance of Hungary, and the writer Valentín Balaša (Bálint Balassa) (Wikipedia).
Osztrák város Magyarországon, a Duna partján fekszik (Peter Kaclík), a Pilis-hegység lábánál, tengerszint feletti 105 méter magasságban. Latin neve Strigonium, német neve Gran, magyar neve Esztergom. Lakossága 100,35 km² területen 30 928 fő (Wikipedia). A Dunántúli részen, a Duna másik partján található Štúrovo városa. A városokat a Mária Valéria híd köti össze, amelyet 2001-ben állítottak helyre (Karin Bogschová). A németek lerombolták a hidat a 1944-es háború alatt (Wikipedia). A városközpontban barokk, rokoko és klasszicista stílusú épületek találhatók. A városközponttól nem messze termál fürdők is megtalálhatók (Karin Bogschová).
Régen kelták éltek itt, a római időkben pedig a rómaiaknak volt a Salvio Mansio településük (Wikipedia). A 2. században itt állt a Solva nevű katonai tábor. A 10. század elején a magyarok is ideérkeztek, a város Géza nagyfejedelem székhelyévé vált. I. István itt lett az első magyar királyként megkoronázva (Wikipedia).
A középkorban hét templomról beszélnek a vári dombon. Kb. a mai bazilika helyén állt Szent Adalbert katedrális, amelyet kb. 1010 körül építettek. A mai bazilika északi tornya mellett állt Szent István Protomártír temploma. Hossza 118 méter, szélessége 49 méter, a kupola magassága 71,5 méter. A timpanon alátámasztására szolgáló oszlopok 57 méter magasak. A falak vastagsága 17 méter. A bazilika emeletén található az érseki kincstár, ahol középkori és újabb szakrális tárgyak gyűjteménye található, köztük Mátyás király reneszánsz kálváriája is (travelguide.sk). Az építését Esztergom érseke, Alexander Rudnay kezdeményezte (Wikipedia). A bazilika mellett a várfalak közé vezet be. Az építészek részben feltárták benne a középkori királyi vár egy részét, amelyet a törökök 1543-ban leromboltak. A várfal komplexum legértékesebb része a román stílusú Királyi Kápolna a bejárat felett lévő rózsakert ablakkal. Keresztény múzeum is található Esztergomban, gazdag és ritka festményekkel és szobrokkal. Az érseki könyvtárban körülbelül 250 000 nyomtatvány található (Karin Bogschová). A város kiemelkedő személyiségei közé tartozik a cseh királyné, I. Přemysl Otakar felesége, Konstancia magyar királyné, valamint a író, Valentín Balaša (Bálint Balassa) (Wikipedia).
A város kiemelkedő személyiségei közé tartozik a cseh királyné, I. Přemysl Otakar felesége, Konstancia magyar királyné, valamint a író, Valentín Balaša (Bálint Balassa) (Wikipedia).
