Výsledkom sú detailné simulácie priemernej výšky snehovej pokrývky, počtu dní so snehovou pokrývkou a ich priestorovej variability.

The climate system is the result of complex interactions between the atmosphere, the Earth’s surface and the planet’s energy balance. In this context, geoinformation technologies play a crucial role, as they make it possible not only to analyse these processes but also to model them and predict their development across space and time. The modelling of snow cover in mountain regions reflects the current need for a detailed understanding of cryospheric processes in the context of climate change, since snow cover plays a fundamental role in the hydrological cycle, the energy balance of the landscape and ecosystem processes. The modelling is based on the integration of numerical meteorological models, particularly WRF – the Weather Research and Forecasting model – with a GIS environment. This approach makes it possible to transform the outputs of climate simulations into a spatially explicit form that can be used for further analyses and decision-making processes. A key aspect is the ability to work at a high spatial resolution, which is essential particularly in rugged mountain terrain. In the research presented, the High Tatras and the Belianske Tatras constitute the primary area of interest—an environment in which the influence of topography on the distribution of snow cover is especially pronounced.

As demonstrated by the methodology presented in the contribution, the input data primarily include meteorological variables that are subsequently processed using the WRF model. An important part of the procedure involves configuring the model, defining the computational domains, preprocessing the input data, performing the calculation itself, and subsequently post-processing the results and selecting appropriate variables. The outputs consist of detailed simulations of mean snow depth, the number of days with snow cover and their spatial variability. An important subsequent step is the integration of these data into a GIS environment, where they are subjected to spatial analysis and visualisation. The procedure also includes the spatial processing of model outputs in GIS. Another essential component of the methodology is the validation of the modelled outputs against available measurements, since the resulting quality of the simulations depends not only on spatial resolution but also on the quality of the initial data and the configuration of the model’s physical parameterisation schemes.

Dynamical downscaling, statistical downscaling and interpolation methods are applied to obtain a more detailed spatial representation. Statistical downscaling does not necessarily involve processing WRF model outputs alone. It may also involve the statistical transformation of data from global or regional models, or from reanalyses such as ERA5, into a finer spatial resolution. The accuracy of this approach depends on both the quality of the transformation and the availability of local measurements from ground-based stations. The simulation results and their climatogeographical interpretation indicate pronounced spatial heterogeneity in snow cover across mountain regions, where even relatively small differences in topography and location result in significant differences in its development. Mean snow depth reaches its maximum approximately within the elevation zone of 1,650 to 2,150 metres above sea level, after which it decreases at higher elevations.

This spatial distribution is determined by several interacting factors, particularly wind, including wind erosion and snow redistribution, the base of orographic cloud cover, orientation in relation to the prevailing airflow, exposure to solar radiation and vegetation. It is precisely the combination of these factors that explains why snow cover may vary considerably even across a relatively small area and why its development cannot be explained solely by elevation. The effects of climate change are reflected not only in changes in mean snow depth but also in changes in the average number of days with snow cover. From a hydrological perspective, these developments have fundamental consequences. Snow cover functions as a natural water reservoir that gradually releases water during the spring snowmelt. Changes in its depth and duration are therefore also reflected in the hydrological regime of the region.

From a methodological perspective, the combination of WRF modelling and GIS analyses represents an important tool for advanced climate studies. It enables not only retrospective analysis, or hindcasting, but also scenario-based modelling of future development. The presentation also demonstrates that the WRF model is applied in research into extreme precipitation, exceptional snowfall events and projections of warming in different parts of the world, confirming its broad applicability in climatological research. Such outputs are essential for planning in sectors such as water management, forestry, energy and tourism. They also confirm that understanding climate processes requires the interconnection of different scales, ranging from global models to local conditions. GIS technologies make it possible to bridge these scales and provide a platform for integrating data from a variety of sources. An interesting addition to the presentation was a popular-science demonstration of the possible development of snow depth by 2050, based on the extrapolation of a time series of historical data. It was therefore neither the result of physical modelling nor a standalone output generated by artificial intelligence, but rather an illustrative extension of an existing trend into the future. From a scientific perspective, this element should consequently be understood as an indicative demonstration rather than a comprehensive forecast.

Within the broader context of the conference’s climate session, this contribution complements findings concerning radiative factors and climate continentality. Together, they demonstrate that climate processes result from complex interactions among energy, the atmosphere and the Earth’s surface, while their manifestations have a strongly differentiated spatial character. Ultimately, this represents a shift from the descriptive understanding of climate phenomena towards their more detailed modelling, spatial interpretation and a deeper understanding of their consequences. Such approaches will also be important for climate change adaptation in mountain regions, where the most significant manifestations include rising air temperatures, changes in snow cover and alterations in the hydrological regime, while other impacts may be less pronounced than in urban environments.

Miriam Janušková – Hodnotenie kontinentality podnebia vo vzťahu k radiačným faktorom

Hits: 65

Výpočet prebieha porovnaním relatívnych priebehov týchto dvoch veličín v kľúčových bodoch roka, napríklad pri 25 %, 50 % a 75 % amplitúdy, pričom výsledná hodnota predstavuje priemer viacerých čiastkových odchýlok.

Climate is not merely a summary of temperatures and precipitation. It is the result of a complex system of processes occurring within the atmosphere, at the Earth’s surface and through interactions between them. One of the key factors shaping this system is solar radiation. Its amount, distribution and interaction with the surface determine the fundamental characteristics of climate, including its continental or oceanic nature. Climatic continentality expresses the extent to which a climate is influenced by inland conditions rather than by oceanic effects. In practice, it is manifested primarily through greater temperature differences between summer and winter and higher weather variability. In Central Europe, including Slovakia, continentality is a highly dynamic characteristic influenced not only by geographical location but also by local factors. Radiation factors are among the most significant of these.

Solar radiation is the primary source of energy for the Earth’s climate system. Its intensity depends on several variables, including latitude, season, cloud cover and surface properties such as albedo and vegetation cover. These factors subsequently affect the temperature regime of the landscape and, consequently, its climatic character. Analysing the relationship between continentality and radiation factors provides a better understanding of how energy is distributed across the landscape and how it influences climatic processes. It also provides tools for identifying areas that are more susceptible to extremes, such as substantial temperature fluctuations or overheating. From a methodological perspective, this involves combining climatological data with spatial analyses. Long-term time series of meteorological measurements are used and subsequently linked with information about radiation conditions. GIS technologies play an important role in this process by making it possible to integrate, analyse and visualise these data spatially.

The integration of climatology and geoinformatics therefore represents a powerful tool for both understanding and managing climatic processes within the landscape. It is relevant not only to scientific research but also as a practical basis for decision-making that directly affects residents‘ quality of life. Ultimately, it is about understanding one fundamental principle: climate is the result of global processes as well as local interactions between energy, the surface and space. The relationship between radiation factors and continentality is also reflected in the time lag between the annual courses of radiation and temperature, which represents the differing characteristics of oceanic and inland regions. The radiation balance influences temperature amplitude, while altitude also plays an important role, as the new method for evaluating continentality is sensitive to it. In the presented approach, extraterrestrial solar radiation and its seasonal course throughout the year constitute the principal radiation component.

An important methodological advance in the evaluation of continentality is the use of a new approach based on comparing the annual courses of air temperature and extraterrestrial solar radiation. This is not merely a general assessment of the relationship between climate and radiation, but a new method for measuring climatic continentality in relation to radiation factors. The approach is based on the assumption that a time lag exists between the maximum level of radiation and the maximum temperature, and that this lag is characteristic of a particular area. This principle forms the basis of the E index, which quantifies continentality as the time shift, expressed in days, between the annual courses of radiation and temperature. Expressing continentality in days is one of the method’s principal contributions, as it makes it possible to describe climatic differences as a characteristic that can be interpreted in temporal terms.

The calculation is performed by comparing the relative annual courses of the two variables at key points, such as 25%, 50% and 75% of their amplitudes. The resulting value represents the average of several partial deviations. The method was illustrated using specific locations with differing oceanic and continental regimes, as well as examples from tropical and extratropical zones. These examples demonstrate the different time lags between the annual courses of radiation and temperature. Such comparisons confirm that the E index can sensitively distinguish between coastal and inland climate types. The practical results indicate that continentality increases with distance from the ocean, with the relationship following an approximately logarithmic pattern. Spatial analyses performed in a GIS environment use climatic-data interpolation, specifically the Ordinary Kriging method, which accounts for the spatial autocorrelation of measurements.

When processing data for Europe, adjacent stations in Russia were also included to represent the eastern boundary more accurately, while island areas were interpolated separately. An analysis along the 50th parallel, for example, demonstrates a very strong relationship between the E index value and distance from the coastline (R² ≈ 0.88). This confirms the dominant influence of oceanic climate regulation in coastal regions. This approach makes it possible to produce continuous continentality maps for the entirety of Europe or even the world while accounting for specific geographical conditions, including island territories and peripheral regions. The interpolated raster was subsequently converted into polygons using the Equal Interval classification method, enabling a clearer spatial interpretation of the results.

Another important conclusion is that the new E index does not operate in isolation but shows a greater degree of agreement with the ombric continentality index. At the same time, it appears to be particularly applicable outside the tropical zone—that is, in areas located beyond the tropics—where the seasonal courses of radiation and temperature allow this type of comparison to be interpreted more reliably. The maps reveal a gradient of continentality, extending from the oceanic western part of Europe, characterised by low values, to the markedly continental regions of Eastern Europe and the interior of Asia. This spatial pattern confirms that continentality is not merely a function of geographical location but also the result of complex interactions between radiation and atmospheric circulation factors. The new method is also sensitive to local conditions, including altitude, terrain orientation, the windward and leeward sides of mountain ranges and the effects of warm and cold ocean currents. It can therefore represent finer spatial differences in climatic characteristics more accurately.
