Úprava vody

Hits: 36009

When treating water, caution is necessary. Knowledge of chemistry is useful. It is necessary to realize that without responsibility towards living organisms, it is not ethical to approach experiments with changes in water parameters. It is useful to familiarize oneself with the parameters of water. Qualitatively, all changes can be made by mixing with water of different properties. Monitoring water parameters, adjusting hardness, and pH are often overemphasized. Fish bred for generations in captivity are often adapted to our conditions. It is not paramount for fish and plants to live in water with the same pH and hardness as they do in nature, but to meet as many conditions as possible for their successful development. Do not get lost in constant measurements and attempts to change. For regular aquarium practice, water parameters are overrated.

Pomôže staršia mraznička, chladiarenský prístroj a šikovný majster.

Raising the water temperature with a heater is quite common in various areas, not just in aquariums. However, a far more challenging problem is how to cool the water. This question is primarily addressed by aquarists dealing with the breeding of marine organisms. Here, the option to utilize the principle of Peltier cells presents itself. An old freezer, refrigeration device, and a skilled craftsman can help. The second option is purchasing from a store. Cooling water in this way is financially demanding. On a small scale, ice can be used, but it is dangerous – because melting ice requires a lot of energy. Ice is a solid substance and has a high thermal capacity – it requires more energy to transition to a liquid state for the same temperature change. Let’s proceed cautiously so we don’t have to experience temperature extremes.

Varom vyzrážame len uhličitanovú tvrdosť a to maximálne o 2.7 °dKH. Anacharis densa a živočíchov, najmä ulitníkov a lastúrnikov znižujú obsah Ca a Mg vo vode.

If we want to change the water hardness, with common inexpensive means, we can only increase it. We can increase the content of calcium and magnesium with calcium carbonate – CaCO3, magnesium carbonate – MgCO3, calcium sulfate – CaSO4, magnesium sulfate – MgSO4, calcium chloride – CaCl2. Naturally, for example, with limestone. However, if we want to achieve a quick change, we must use a stronger concentration. Finally, effective commercial products are available that can quickly increase hardness. However, a much more difficult question arises if we intend to decrease the hardness. It is possible to use precipitation with oxalic acid, but the equilibrium of this process is small. However, if we were able to filter this water mechanically with a very fine filter, we might achieve the desired result. Boiling water to reduce hardness is very uneconomical. The effect is minimal. Boiling only precipitates carbonate hardness, up to a maximum of 2.7 °dKH. In addition, boiling also destroys the little life that is in the water, so I do not recommend boiling. Activated charcoal partially reduces water hardness, similarly some types of plants such as Anacharis densa and animals, especially snails and crustaceans, reduce the content of Ca and Mg in the water. They are able to accumulate large amounts of calcium in their shells, as they are practically dependent on its occurrence. Ampullaria are able to bind a relatively large amount of calcium into their shells in larger quantities. Conversely, in its absence, their shells soften. Peat also reduces water hardness to a small extent. Mixing softer water is of course possible to achieve lower hardness, and it works linearly. For practical purposes, we have the following options in principle.

Distillation – In the distillation column, water is stripped of ions. Distillation generates a significant amount of wastewater. The use of large volumes of water is necessary because distillation involves high temperatures that need to be cooled. The distillation column is a considerable investment, used by breeders who have a larger number of tanks. The efficiency of distillation is very high. However, it must be said that distilled water is not very suitable for aquarium purposes. It is sterile water and very labile. Therefore, it is good to mix this water. Reverse osmosis is ideal for this reason. Technical distilled water from the store is not very suitable for aquarists. The operation of the distillation column itself does not undergo any significant wear and tear, and in any case, under normal use, it does not require high subsequent investments.

Oproti destilačnej sústave majú jednu veľkú nevýhodu v trvanlivosti – membrány a filtračné média osmotickej kolóny je nutné časom meniť, pretože inak reverzka prestane plniť svoju funkciu.

Reverse osmosis – a process that utilizes semipermeability. Osmosis is a known process in which the exchange of substances occurs due to osmotic pressure assuming semipermeability between two systems. For clarification – simple diffusion, mixing cannot occur because there is a boundary, an obstacle between two systems. But due to the fact that this boundary is semipermeable, thanks to osmotic pressure, the flow of substances occurs. Reverse osmosis also utilizes this, but with the difference that in reverse osmosis, ions are completely removed, there is no equalization of osmotic pressure on both sides. The water obtained in this way is suitable for aquarists. Finally, its efficiency is not as high as in distillation. Water from a reverse osmosis system typically reaches 110% of the original conductivity value. There are commercially available reverse osmosis units on the market that can be purchased. They do not take up as much space as distillation systems. However, compared to distillation systems, they have one major disadvantage in terms of durability – membranes and filtration media of the reverse osmosis unit need to be replaced over time because otherwise, the reverse osmosis system will fail to function properly.

Iontomeničom (Ionexom) – elektrolytická úprava cez katexanex, z ktorých jeden je záporne nabitý a priťahuje katióny a druhý kladne a priťahuje anióny.

Ion exchange (Ionex) – electrolytic treatment via a cathex and anex, one of which is negatively charged and attracts cations, and the other is positively charged and attracts anions. Water passes through these two main parts, and ions are bound to the individual parts. This achieves demineralization from ions. Ionex could also be easily assembled amateurishly. The problem is that cathex and anex have their capacity. Over time, it must be regenerated to maintain its physical properties and the entire system to be effective. Regeneration is carried out by the action of various specific substances, in some cases, kitchen salt. As an ion exchange (changer) for calcium, permutit, wofatit, and cabunit are used, for example. Selective ion exchangers are designed to eliminate certain elements – components in water. For nitrogen – N, monmorillonite, and clinoptiolite are suitable.

Reduction of conductivity is achieved by the same methods as described for water hardness. Similarly, increasing conductivity. The source water available to us typically has a slightly alkaline pH, with drinking tap water usually around 7.5. For many fish, it is suitable to increase the acidity to values around 6.5. We have several options – either change the pH purely chemically or more naturally. pH change is more effective when water contains fewer dissolved substances. If it contains a lot of salts, the pH change will be somewhat smaller, and any fluctuations in this value will be smaller. The effect of NaCl – salt on the pH of water is negligible for the aquarist because it is a salt of a strong base – NaOH and a strong acid – HCl, so it does not affect the pH. Practically, NaCl affects pH only because aquarium water is a solution containing various substances with which NaCl reacts. However, this effect is small and difficult to predict.

Ak by sme predsa len použili silné kyseliny: 2HCl + Ca(HCO3)2 = CaCl2 + 2H2CO3 – reakciou kyseliny chlorovodíkovej (soľnej) vzniká chlorid vápenatý.

For reducing pH, it is suitable to use weak phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄). H₃PO₄ is a weak acid. The amount necessary should be determined by experimentation. The pH change by any means also depends on the salt content, partially on temperature, and pressure. It can be roughly estimated that to lower the pH in a 100-liter tank, H₃PO₄ should be applied in milliliters. I do not recommend using other acids; however, for your safety, it should also be a weak acid of simple composition. H₃PO₄ is commonly used to reduce hardness. When using H₃PO₄, the following reactions occur (in the listed reactions, calcium Ca can be replaced with magnesium Mg):

2H₃PO₄ + 3Ca(HCO₃)₂ = Ca₃(PO₄)₂ + 6H₂CO₃ – acid reacts with calcium bicarbonate to form soluble calcium phosphate and weak carbonic acid. H₂CO₃ is unstable and can break down into water and carbon dioxide. The resulting phosphate can be fertilizer for fish, algae, or a source of phosphorus for fish.

2H₃PO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = Ca(H₂PO₄)₂ + 6H₂CO₃ – soluble dihydrogen phosphate calcium is formed.

H₃PO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = CaHPO₄ + 2H₂CO₃ – insoluble calcium hydrogen phosphate is formed.

If we were to use strong acids:

2HCl + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = CaCl₂ + 2H₂CO₃ – reaction of hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid) forms calcium chloride.

H₂SO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = CaSO₄ + 2H₂CO₃ – reaction of sulfuric acid forms calcium sulfate.

If the source water contains limestone, the water’s buffering capacity will be evident – calcium carbonate CaCO₃ reacts with the resulting carbonic acid to form bicarbonate, entering the carbonic acid cycle. In this way, our options to influence pH are limited. pH will decrease for a certain time, but not for long; this mainly depends on the concentration of bicarbonates (from CO₂) and the amount of acid used – it’s obvious that the buffering capacity has its limits. In the case of high water hardness, continuous CO₂ treatment is more effective.

2H₃PO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = Ca(H₂PO₄)₂ + 6H₂CO₃ – lösliches Dihydrogenphosphatcalcium entsteht.

H₃PO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = CaHPO₄ + 2H₂CO₃ – unlösliches Calciumdihydrogenphosphat entsteht.

Naturally, pH can also be lowered. Suitable options include alder cones, decaying wood, peat, peat extract, etc. However, everything depends on understanding the specific requirements of individual fish and plants. Some fish do not tolerate peat extract. Peat extract is often used for dips, for example, for tetra fish. Peat reduces pH. Decaying wood has its drawbacks. However, it can generally be said, especially for beginning aquarists, that using various materials in the aquarium is not as dangerous as most people think. On the contrary, their long-term and gradual activity makes their effect on pH change much more acceptable than using pure chemicals. Moreover, the nature of the acids leached from these materials often has a beneficial effect on fish health and plant growth. Humic acids, organic complexes, chelates, and other organic substances that are often a natural part of our fish and plants, even in their native habitats, play a role in this process.

To increase pH, baking soda – NaHCO3 is used. However, when it comes to raising pH, this purely chemical method is used to a much lesser extent. Naturally, pH can be best increased by using a substrate. Carbonates contained in limestone, travertine commonly shift pH valuesto levels above 8. A very simple water adjustment is the use of salt. If we want to achieve a constant level of salt, do not forget to add salt during water changes and top-ups. Salt is used for some types of fish, especially for brackish species. Brackish species live in nature at the intersection of fresh and saltwater, for example, at the mouths of large rivers into the sea. Salt is also recommended for some livebearers. Livebearers live in waters of moderate hardness in South and North America. The appropriate dosage for guppies is 2 – 3 tablespoons of salt per 40 liters of water. For black mollies – a typical brackish species – even a little more, 5 tablespoons per 40 liters of water. We can use both table and sea salt, which can be obtained in stores. When starting with salt application, let’s be cautious at first, proceed carefully, and let the fish gradually get used to the salt, as osmotic pressure is tricky. A sudden change in conductivity caused by a sudden increase in NaCl will lead to negative stress – especially the surface – the fish’s skin is susceptible to damage. This property is utilized in treatment.

Salt is recommended for African lake cichlids. They contain relatively high concentrations of sodium – Na. In literature, up to 0.5 kg per 100 liters of water is mentioned, but I recommend one tablespoon per 40 liters of water. Salt appears to act as a transporter of metabolic processes and a catalyst. NaCl dissociates first into sodium cation and chlorine anion. Chlorine acts as a disinfectant, and sodium participates in biological reactions. Organic dyes, drugs can be successfully removed by activated carbon, partially by peat. Activated carbon has a wide range of applications. It is a relatively effective prevention against infection because it adsorbs a lot of harmful substances. It works as a filter. It has such a structure that it has a huge surface area, one mm3 provides up to 100150 m² of area. It is also used in commercially available filters. It can also partially reduce water hardness. However, it should be realized that its action is undesirable, especially in tanks with plants, due to its adsorption capacity. Activated carbon also removes nutrients from plants. Of course, its capabilities are exhaustible – after some time, the capacity becomes saturated, and it is necessary to either regenerate or replace the activated carbon. Regeneration is a chemical process, too costly for the aquarist, actually unnecessary. Activated carbon could be partially regenerated by boiling, but this is quite impractical. If we have powdered activated carbon available, we have won – its efficiency is practically the highest, and therefore we can use the smallest volume. The solution is to implement it into the filter, but also for example, to pour it into a stocking and place it in the tank. If some of it disperses, do not despair, activated carbon is harmless, it does not cloud the water.

In the water from the municipal water supply, various gaseous components are present, primarily intended for disinfection. They are essential for humans, but their impact on aquarium life is undesirable. One of these gases is chlorine, which is a well-known toxic gas, even for humans, but in low doses, it is harmless to humans and kills bacteria. Drinking water usually contains chlorine in the range of 0.10.2 mg/l, with a maximum of up to 0.5 mg/l. Chlorine is particularly harmful to fish gills. To rid water of chlorine, for example, letting it stand is suitable. There are products on the market based on sodium thiosulfate – Na2S2O3, which can remove chlorine from water. Allowing water to stand will rid it of chlorine in approximately one day. We just need to allow gases to escape – so no closed containers. Partially, immediate water filling will help, with the longest possible transport of water in the hose. A significant portion of chlorine will evaporate this way. There are also other gases in the water – complete degassing by standing occurs after four days. Various infusions are used for the swabs of some species, such as infusions of aquatic plants. These can literally prepare water – stabilize it, provide desired substances, such as trace elements, or possibly bind more harmful components. Wood is also used, oak, alder, willow. Brown coal is also suitable. Peat acts as a partial adsorbent. On the other hand, it adds humic acids and other organic substances to the water. Especially recently, ultraviolet light has been used for water treatment. Often also for its sterilization from pathogens. It can also be used in such a way – when the entire volume of water is affected – for example, in the case of an acute disease, but usually, the UV lamp is used as a filter, which effectively rids the water of various organism pathogens. Water treated with a sufficiently strong UV lamp, for example, does not become cloudy. Its use minimizes microbial infections. UV lamps are readily available on the market for aquarium supplies. As for a strong lamp – the wattage is determined by the volume of the tank. I do not recommend using the UV lamp continuously.

Vzduchovanie a kyslík vo vode

Hits: 35489

Oxygen is a gas that we associate with life in our minds. Plants are the primary source of oxygen. There is much less oxygen in water than in the air. The concentration of oxygen in water depends on the water temperature. The higher the temperature in the aquarium, the lower the concentration of O2. At a temperature of 10°C at normal pressure, there are about 11.3 mg of O2 dissolved in a liter of water, at a temperature of 25°C – 8.3 mg/l, and at 30°C – 7.6 mg/l. Oxygen enters the water not only through the action of aquatic plants but also through diffusion from the air, mixing, and surface agitation. Oxygen is mainly consumed in the aquarium by the decomposition activity of microorganisms in the substrate. If the substrate is poorly aerated, this can lead to a deficiency and depletion of oxygen for fish and plants. Oxygen promotes the breakdown of matter. Pure, 100% concentrated oxygen is toxic to the human body, so when I talk about oxygen in the context of aeration, I’m referring, of course, to air. Air also contains a lot of nitrogen and CO2. Plants don’t like” oxygen all that much, especially not during the day and with sufficient supply of light energy. Even though aeration causes significant water movement, it is not beneficial for plants. On the contrary, oxygen would be welcome for them during the night when plants absorb oxygen. During the day, plants absorb carbon dioxide – this is the process of photosynthesis and the resulting processes such as the Krebs cycle, the C cycle, N cycle, etc. Aeration homogenizes the water in the aquarium, provides water movement, and mixes individual layers, especially vertically. The amount of oxygen that aeration can deliver to the aquarium is relatively low – the diffusion of gases in water is orders of magnitude lower than in air. It is pointless to create large bubbles; although they may agitate the water more, the amount of oxygen absorbed by the water will be lower than if we produced smaller bubbles. The amount of oxygen absorbed in this way depends on the surface area of the bubbles, which is higher with smaller bubbles.

An airstone can have various shapes. It can be cylindrical, spherical, or elongated, up to 105 cm long. There are stones shaped like the circumference of a circle. Similarly to an airstone, a wood diffuser can be used, which creates small bubbles. Its disadvantage is that the pores in it close quickly. It is used more for CO2 diffusion – for plant fertilization. Moreover, the wood diffuser decomposes and becomes covered with algae. Another essential way to transport oxygen into the water is surface agitation, which either aerates through the stone or filter. Most filter usage instructions recommend placing the filter so that the water outlet is at or just below the surface. This way, oxygen gets into the water. In aquaristics, air pumps are used for aeration, from which air is driven through tubes either to airstones or filters. I use several types of air pumps of varying power. The air pump should be positioned above all water levels into which it delivers air to prevent water from entering the compressor in the event of a power outage. If it is not possible to place the compressor in this way, the tube on its way from the compressor to the aquarium is first led one meter above the highest water level, or another technical solution is provided to prevent water from entering, for example, I use a check valve. If you ever come across the term turtle,” it might refer to a larger air pump designed for a larger pipe or hose (e.g., garden). It is often used where there are multiple tanks. Another option is to aerate through the filter. Some filters can draw air through a connected tube into the upper part of the filter. I use this method and consider it better and more functional. The tube can be adjusted as needed to provide air as you like. This adapted aeration has a better effect because the bubbles are introduced into the water horizontally and are smaller if needed. Probably also because they have a certain inertia and a small volume, their movement to the surface and therefore evaporation takes much longer than with stone aeration. Gas diffusion into the water is more effective because it takes longer and occurs over a larger surface area.

So gelangt Sauerstoff ins Wasser.

Hits: 57596

Pri zakladaní akvária je ideálne, ak si akvarista najprv zaobstará samotnú nádrž a stojan, vybaví sa potrebnou technikou a až potom si zadováži vodné rastlinyryby. Pred zadovážením nádrže pre vaše rybičky stojíme pred základnou otázkou, aké veľké bude vaše nové akvárium. Každopádne je dobré, ak chceme chovať ryby, aby sme predtým rozmýšľali, kde bude ich životný priestor, v čom budú existovať. Nuž a to so sebou prinesie aj odpovede na otázky, aký bude zaberať priestor samotná nádrž, či bude nutný stojan, akú použiť elektroinštaláciu, techniku, pomôcky. Ako založiť akvárium, aby fungovalo podľa vašich predstáv? Ak máme novú nádrž, ktorá je čerstvo zlepená, odporúčam umyť najmä spoje octom a následne celú nádrž opláchnuť vodou. Do nádrže nasypme na dno štrk. Štrk by mal byť skôr hladký. Na ostrých hranách sa ryby môžu poraniť. Dno akvária je veľmi dôležité. Ryby produkujú exkrementy, ktorý spracúva najmä mikroflóra a neskôr z neho čerpajú živiny rastliny. Ideálne je použiť riečny štrk. Ak použijeme morský a zároveň kremičitý štrk, nemusíme sa starať o uvoľňovanie vápenatých a horečnatých solí do vody, čiže štrk vám nebude zvyšovať tvrdosť vody.

Všetko podľa nárokov a možností vášho budúceho akvária.

Piesok do akvária v zásade nepatrí. Ak predsa len piesok chceme, tak použime hrubozrnný. Jemný piesok tvorí ťažké, zľahnuté, málo priepustné dno. Do akvária určite chceme nasadiť ryby a rastliny.

Celý proces zabehnutia akvária to uľahčí a urýchli.

S rastlinami a rybami zatiaľ trpezlivo vyčkajme.

Mohlo by v ňom byť napr.

When setting up an aquarium, it’s ideal for the aquarist to first acquire the tank itself and a stand, equip it with the necessary equipment, and then procure aquatic plants and fish. Before obtaining the tank for your fish, you face the fundamental question of how large your new aquarium will be. Nevertheless, it’s good practice, if we intend to keep fish, to consider beforehand where their living space will be, how they will exist. This will lead to answers about the size of the tank itself, whether a stand will be necessary, what electrical installation, equipment, and tools to use. How to set up an aquarium to make it work according to your preferences? If we have a new tank that has just been sealed, I recommend washing the joints with vinegar and then rinsing the entire tank with water. Fill the bottom of the tank with gravel. The gravel should be smooth rather than sharp-edged to prevent fish from getting injured. The bottom of the aquarium is very important. Fish produce waste, which is mainly processed by microflora and later absorbed by plants. It’s ideal to use river gravel. If we use marine and siliceous gravel, we don’t need to worry about the release of calcium and magnesium salts into the water, so the gravel won’t increase water hardness.

If we want to successfully grow plants, I recommend using fine gravel with a particle size of 14 mm. Of course, different types of fish have different requirements for gravel size. Gravel can be purchased at a pet store or obtained by other means. If possible, use so-called old gravel from a tank belonging to a friend or from another established aquarium. Such gravel already contains microorganisms that will help the successful development of your tank. Your aquarium will thus establish itself more quickly. Gravel from a store or from nature should be rinsed in water before use. Gravel itself is poor in usable nutrients but serves as a substrate for the development of microorganisms. We can sift the gravel to the desired size. Finer gravel is better for planting. We can also add fertilizer, substrate for plants, such as pieces of wood, alder cones, peat, solid commercial or homemade fertilizer, directly into the gravel when setting up the aquarium. All according to the requirements and possibilities of your future aquarium. The minimum amount of gravel required for a good aquarium is 5 cm across the entire bottom area. However, if we want to achieve perfect plant growth, a layer of gravel 10 cm deep is suitable. It all depends on what we want and what resources we have. For a smaller aquarium, we probably use a lower layer of gravel than for a larger one. Suitability also depends on the types of aquatic plants we want to grow. Larger plants require a thicker layer of gravel.

We can shape the bottom; in general, it’s nicer and more practical to have a higher layer at the back than at the front. However, over time, the gravel will start to move,” so we can create terraces or use other technical solutions to fix the shape of the bottom. Sand does not belong in the aquarium. If we still want to use sand, we should use coarse-grained sand. Fine sand forms a dense, compact, and poorly permeable bottom. We definitely want to stock fish and plants in our aquarium. However, to ensure that fish and plants feel good in the aquarium and that you like your aquarium, it’s necessary to use decorations and the necessary equipment. Setting up an aquarium without technology or with minimal technology is possible, but I don’t recommend it for beginners. Once you have the gravel in the tank, install the technology and decoration. The technology can be covered with decoration, preferably also with plants, and it’s good to plan this in advance. Decoration can include rocks, wood, ceramic caves, etc. More about this in a separate article.

The equipment includes, for example, a filter, heater, air stone, and thermometer. If you use a 3D background, it’s definitely better to install it in an empty tank. Wallpaper on the back wall is also easier to apply to an empty aquarium, although I am against wallpapers in regular aquarium practice. Self-adhesive film adheres very well to a completely empty aquarium, especially if it’s black, and I often stick it to the side walls. Of course, it’s for the back wall. Once you’ve completed these steps, let’s proceed to fill the tank with water. Cold water is more suitable, if available, it’s advisable to use seasoned water from another aquarium, for example, from another aquarist or from an aquarium that you’ve had for some time. This will facilitate and speed up the entire process of setting up the aquarium. After filling the tank with water, turn on the filter and let the water filter for at least a week. Similarly, if possible, infect the filter material with water from another aquarium. For example, rinse the old filter cartridge in water from the aquarium and clean” the new cartridge in this murky water. This will inoculate microorganisms into the new cartridge and speed up the process of introducing the filter.

Let’s patiently wait with plants and fish for now. After a week, drain one-third of the water and plant the plants – ideally fast-growing species such as Sagittaria subulata, Hygrophila polysperma, and turn on the lighting and aeration. Aeration is a very effective tool for suppressing many unfavorable situations. Leave the lighting on for 12 hours a day. Maintain this state for at least another 5 days. The nitrogen cycle takes just over a month. After two weeks from filling the water, the concentration of ammonia is highest. If we have neglected something, we may experience ammonia spikes. However, this means that we have made a mistake somewhere. If we haven’t planted any plants by then, now is the right time. Also, make sure to turn on aeration. After three to four weeks, we can add fish. Carefully monitor their behavior and don’t neglect any signs of disease or poisoning. In case of major problems, change part of the water, add aeration, and in extreme cases, remove the fish to different water, even fresh water.

But how many fish should we keep in our aquarium? First of all, I don’t recommend overstocking the tank. Consider that fish will grow over time, and they grow throughout their lives. Larger fish species require different conditions than smaller ones. The situation also depends on the technology and the specific characteristics of each species. Roughly speaking, we should calculate one liter of water per centimeter of fish body length. Let’s say we have a 1,000-liter aquarium. It could contain, for example, 200300 neon tetras, or 50 larger fish species ranging in size from 10 to 20 cm. If you start with too few fish, your fish may show changes in behavior from the norm, such as great timidity or even fear. In such cases, it’s good to consider increasing the number of fish with regard to their future size. Creating multiple hiding places can also help. Your aquarium, fish, inhabitants, and technology will require your time and knowledge, it won’t work without them. On the other hand, it can show you wonderful things and be a nice addition to your home. It takes about six months for the aquarium to stabilize. There may be problems, but don’t let them discourage you. Maintaining an aquarium is not easy, especially for a beginner. An aquarium depends on many factors. We just need to try to understand them. Let’s look at it in a way that any potential losses resulting from our ignorance or negligence will come from our own pocket. I often hear about procedures that aim for a quick introduction of fish. It usually ends with my observation: Well, you’ve poisoned those fish.” The quips I taught the fish to swim sign” are not lucky for the fish. The aquarium requires attention from a person, and then it will repay them. I wish all aquarists success with their aquariums.

Chemistry shouldn’t be feared; it has its solid laws, but without at least some knowledge of it, it’s very difficult to succeed in fishkeeping or plant cultivation. Biological processes are closely related to physical laws as well. In nature, very few substances are found in a liquid or gaseous state in a stable, neutral state. The vast majority of substances are dissociated into ions. The ability to bind to substances, elements, is specific and depends on many chemical and physical factors. Water itself is characterized by ionization – as we all know, it conducts electric current. Almost every aquarist has heard of pH. What does pH describe? The differential concentration of chemically pure components in water – the individual components” that make up water. Water provides opportunities for many chemical reactions. Equilibrium constants can describe these reactions. It’s nothing abnormal, nothing difficult to understand. Using an analogy, it’s exactly like among people; there’s a certain balance among us, a certain tension (pressure) that sometimes tilts to one side, sometimes to the other. And the conditions that determine this state include even such a triviality as where the wind blows from”. Let’s remember osmosis, but also what happens when we release air from a tire valve – pressure is equalized over time. Chemical bonding is a fragile thing, just like relationships between people. Among us, there are catalysts, enzymes, as described in chemistry and biology, which allow for some process, some reaction to take place. Of course, there are also retardants – inhibitors.

Nature has a unified foundation; Aristotle understands it as the origin, essence, and development of things, and I see it the same way. If we approach it together, we have a greater chance of understanding aquatics as well. Understanding the connections between different scientific disciplines is described by the term concilience. The basic building block of living systems is carbon. Carbon, along with hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur, belongs to the biogenic elements. Carbon chemistry forms a separate discipline – organic chemistry (it’s not just about carbon oxides). Carbon constitutes the largest part of the dry matter of fish, plants, and microorganisms. Almost everyone has encountered the concept of photosynthesis in life. Even this reaction, which allows us humans to exist, revolves around carbon. In the aquarium, carbon occurs mainly in the form of carbon dioxide, carbonates, bicarbonates, and carbonic acid. The ratio depends mainly on pH. Carbon is also found in the form of proteins in food, in wood where gradual decomposition leads to the cleavage of proteins into amino acids and subsequently to nitrification and denitrification, which lowers the pH – the environment becomes more acidic. Nitrogen plays the most important role in denitrification and nitrification. Nitrification occurs first in the aquarium. Ammonia is first oxidized to nitrites and nitrates by the action of nitrifying bacteria Nitrosomonas. As the previous sentence suggests, this process is aerobic (with access to air). Under anaerobic conditions, the opposite (reductive) process occurs – denitrification. Compounds of nitrogen are reduced to nitrogen oxides – N2O, NO, or even to N2 at pH higher than 6 by the action of Nitrobacter bacteria. Since these are gases, denitrification can remove nitrogen compounds from the water (aquarium). These processes are very important for aquaristics and are fundamentally positive. The toxicity of nitrogen cycle products decreases in this order: NH3NO2NO3. Some more sensitive species do not tolerate higher levels of nitrates – for example, American Apistogrammas. The toxicity of ammonia is higher at higher pH. More ammonia is found in water with higher pH and temperature.

Nitrogen comes from the breakdown of proteins provided by food. First, amino acids are formed, later ammonia. Nitrates can be effectively eliminated by plants, reverse osmosis in source water, or selective ion exchangers. Phosphates (PO4) and heavy metals such as lead, zinc are also toxic. Some metals are desirable in trace amounts but act as poisons in higher concentrations. If there is an oxygen deficit during the decomposition of matter, the products of rotting are methane (CH4), ammonia, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), lactic acid. Species not tolerating very soft water often suffer from flabbiness. This is due to osmotic pressure – salts are flushed out of their bodies, and more pure water penetrates their bodies than is tolerable. Carbon dioxide is a necessary inorganic substance, but at high concentrations, it acts as a narcotic and suffocates fish. Sometimes these effects can be utilized. If, for example, we want to humanely euthanize fish, mineral water is sufficient – it should contain more than 5% dissolved CO2. There is a dependence between carbonate hardness, pH, and carbon dioxide. The content of CO2 is inversely proportional to pH and temperature and directly proportional to carbonate hardness.

Was beschreibt der pH-Wert?

Iný spôsob (Neubauer in verb, 2009): nalovený materiál dáme napr. do nízkej nádoby, napr. do prepravky na zákusky. Maximálne 5 – 7 cm vrstvu. Zakryjeme ich starou záclonou, nalejeme vlažnú vodu aby bola asi dva cm nad substrát. Necháme ich v tmavej miestnosti s izbovou teplotou.

Nitenky – Tubifex tubifex used to be quite abundant in areas where waste was discharged – organic pollution into watercourses – near breweries, maltings, soda factories, pulp mills, industrial plants. They live in mud in slower flowing or calm streams. In streams, they burrow into the mud and can very cautiously burrow deep into the bottom. Tubifex can be found in almost every stream in our country, but not in quantities that are interesting for aquarists. Today, the water is often transformed in treatment plants, there is less waste, and nutrients are lacking. Nitenky as aquarists know them have a brown-red color. In nature, their color is variable and depends on the amount of oxygen in the water. Nitenky in nature can also be white.

Feeding Tubifex

Tubifex are very suitable food, for example, for catfish, loaches, suckerfish, and small catfish. Mud still circulates in their intestines long after they are caught. Therefore, they must be thoroughly rinsed and allowed to digest for at least three days after catching. They are very dependent on fresh water, much more so than live Tubifex, so they must be rinsed frequently with water, or a constant flow and drainage of water are provided for them. It is suitable to keep them, for example, in shallow bowls, for example, at the bottom of the refrigerator. They can burrow into the bottom, where they can either rot or sometimes it may happen that they mass spawn after a while. If you get live Tubifex, I recommend feeding part of them immediately and freezing the rest yourself. You don’t have to worry. If you freeze them yourself, they will remain in an acceptable condition. The point is that I have not heard of frozen Tubifex from a store that didn’t look like mud after thawing :-(.

Catching Tubifex

Tubifex are caught by taking the entire substrate on which we see them, because they quickly and cautiously burrow into the substrate. We can get them out by sprinkling clean sand on top. Tubifex will gradually crawl over the sand, making them easier to remove. Another method (Neubauer in verb, 2009): put the caught material, for example, into a shallow container, for example, into a cake transporter. Maximum 5 – 7 cm layer. Cover them with an old curtain, pour warm water to be about two cm above the substrate. Leave them in a dark room with room temperature. Tubifex will start to suffocate, and about an hour or two later, they will start crawling through the curtain. We can easily take them from the curtain with a dense hair comb.
