Jedným z charakteristických rysov tohto druhu je ich schopnosť živiť sa predovšetkým hmyzom a inými drobnými bezstavovcami, ktoré nachádzajú na hladine vody. Je pomerne nenáročný na chov a starostlivosť, čo ich robí vhodnými pre začiatočníkov v akvaristike. Sú pokojné a spoločenské. Má viacero farebných typov. Niektoré sú fŕkané, iné majú čierny spodok bruška až po koniec gonopódia. Wischnath uvádza teóriu, podľa ktorej by čiernobruchá forma mohla byť prírodným krížencom G. metallicus a G. punctulatus.
