Spišský Hrhov

Hits: 3005

Patrí do Prešovského kraja a leží v blízkosti pohoria Levočské vrchy. Medzi významné patrí aj kostol svätého Michala Archaniela. Neďaleko je Zároveň Slovenský raj.

The territory of the present-day village was settled in the Neolithic period around 450 BC. Slavs began to inhabit the area during the Great Moravian period (9th – 10th century). The first written mention of the village dates back to the year 1243. A significant colonization family settled here, later acquiring a noble family name based on the village’s name – Gergew or de Gyrgow. During the time of German colonization, Saxons settled across the Lodzina stream, forming a new village – German Hrhov. In 1280, Slovaks and Saxons merged into a single village. The de Gyrgow family Hungarianized their name to Gyorgy, and they owned the village until 1885 when all their property was bought by the Hungarian noble Vidor Csáky. Hrhov was under their ownership until November 1944. At the turn of the century, the Csáky family invited agricultural experts from Saxony, who brought modern technologies in cattle farming, horticulture, vegetable farming, and other crafts (spisskyhrhov.sk).

Since the times of Great Moravia, the Spiš region has been characterized by the cultivation and processing of flax, in which the inhabitants of settlements in the present-day Spišský Hrhov excelled. The oldest names of the village, such as Gargow, Gurgow, Gurhew, originated from the naming of flax craftsmen called gargovia. Gargovia excelled in the production of tools for flax processing, such as barda, bidla, other parts of looms: cepi, cerľice – reels for hand spinning, cjefki for winding yarn, vretená, snovadliny, haspľe – winding devices, kolovrátky, kúdele, tĺky, šmertki – winding devices, piesty, rafi – for removing seeds from flax, česáky, grample – for combing flax. Basketry, blacksmithing, tanning, logging, milling, bell making, production of items for food, clothing, construction, weaving, brick making, shingle making, candle making, embroidery, lace making, jewelry making, musical instruments, and toy making were also well-developed. Currently, there is a renaissance in folk artistic production, for which Spišský Hrhov has excellent conditions (spisskyhrhov.sk).

Spišský Hrhov is a village located in the eastern part of Slovakia, in the Spišská Nová Ves district. It belongs to the Prešov Region and is situated near the Levočské vrchy mountains. Among the significant buildings is the Church of St. Michael the Archangel. Nearby is also the Slovak Paradise.

Established in 1971, it is the most extensive urban monument reserve in Europe, including Old Town, Josefov, Malá Strana, Hradčany, New Town, and Vyšehrad (wikipedia.sk). The name Prague is derived from the word „práh,“ meaning a river threshold or ford, which was located somewhere near the present-day Charles Bridge. People used to cross the river at this ford. Various tribes inhabited the territory of Prague in prehistoric times, with the latest discoveries dating back to 7,000 years ago. For example, there is evidence of a Germanic settlement. In the 6th century, Slavs began to settle in the Prague basin (wikipedia.cs). Evidence is found in the present-day Veleslavín area. The first church was built on the castle in 885. A trading settlement in the area of today’s Lesser Town is documented from the 10th century, and in 926, the Rotunda of St. Vitus was built on the castle. Vyšehrad was founded in the second half of the 10th century (wikipedia.cs). Since 995, after the massacre of the Slavník clan, Prague became the sole residence of the Czech principality. The Přemyslid dynasty gained all the power (wikipedia.cz).
