Poecilia velifera (Regan, 1914) je krásny druh živorodky rodu Poecilia. Je preň vypracovaný aj štandard a poriadajú sa pre ne v rámci kategórie Molly. Ostatné molinézie pre túto kategóriu sú: Poecilia sphenops, Poecilia latipinna. Práve latipiny sú veľmi podobné veliferám. Druh má množstvo foriem: assorted, calico, goldleopard, green, red gold, silver. Dosahuje 15 cm, žije v pH 8, dGH 13 – 19, pri teplote 25 – 28 °C, žije v Strednej Amerike – v Mexiku (Fish Base), dožíva sa 3 – 5 rokov (rybicky.net). Poecilia velifera je známa aj ako „Marigold swordtail“ alebo „Velvet swordtail“. Samec Poecilia velifera má veľmi dlhý a zakrivený chvost, ktorý mu dodáva šabľovitý vzhľad. Je vhodná do spoločenských nádrží, je pomerne nenáročný, a preto je vhodná pre menej skúsených akvaristov. Poecilia velifera pochádza z prírodných sladkovodných a brakických biotopov. Aj v akváriu dokážu dobre tolerovať zvýšenú salinitu. Ich prirodzené prostredie obsahuje bohatú vegetáciu. Je to spoločenská a pokojná ryba, ktorá sa dobre znáša s inými druhmi. Rozmnožovacie je výrazné, a samce často predvádzajú svoje nápadné plutvy, aby zaujali samice. Samice sú väčšie než samce a môžu mať v jednom vrhu desiatky mláďat. Sú všežravé, vhodné je dopĺňať potravu špenátom, spirulinou.

Poecilia sphenops forma black molly je vypestovaná forma známa u nás ako blackmolla, molla, molinézia pravedpodobne z pôvodnej formy Poecila sphenops, Poecila velifera a Poecilia latipinna. Pôvodný druh Poecilia sphenops je prakticky bezfarený. Prispôsobená je životu v brakickej vode, takže znáša vyšší obsah solí. Prispôsobenie veľkému zasoleniu je zjavné napr. úspešným rozmnožovaním v populácii termálnych jazierok v Piešťanoch, ktoré sú obohatené okrem iného o síru. Odporúčaná dávka je polievková lyžica na 10 litrov . P. shpenops je to živorodka. Medzi potomkami sa vždy nájdu jedince, ktorí sú fľakaté. Čierneho farbiva je na začiatku vývinu menej, vyzerajú to ako formy calico, prípadne tuxedo. Asi 50 % týchto sa neskoršie celoplošne prefarbí na čierno. Miera závisí od genetickej výbavy populácie. Menej čierneho melanínu je návrat k pôvodnej forme, ktorá je viac-menej bezfarebná. týchto rýb je nenáročný, vyžadujú však veľa rastlinnej zložky v potrave, šalát, špenát. Zaujímavé je, že doslova sa vedia pobiť o špagety. Blackmolly sú živé stvorenia, ak ich chováme spolu s gupkami, mečovkami, tak pôsobia trochu silnejšie, mohutnejšie. Existujú rôzne tvarové variety Poecilia sphenops: black molly, sailfin molly, gold molly.

The breeding of these fish is undemanding, but they require a lot of plant-based components in their diet, such as lettuce and spinach. Interestingly, they literally know how to fight over spaghetti. Black molly fish, when kept together with guppies or swordtails, appear a bit stronger and more robust. There are various morphological varieties of Poecilia sphenops: black molly, sailfin molly, gold molly.
